Thank you for lovely food. Needed a new fish shop after north cheam fish and chips was taken over and prices increased and standards went down. Tried Major Plaice and very pleased. Nowhere will ever beat historic NCF&C prices for value but willing to pay extra for good food. We had a cod, a plaice, large chips and curry sauce. Lovely batter cooked just right. Fish served in boxes with slice of lemon and tartare sachet. Really delicious. Will be our new go to.

I'm nearly 50 so I've had a fair few (too many) fish and chip meals in my life. I think this was the best one I've ever had. Haddock was cooked perfectly and not dried out at all. Batter was perfect and chips just how I like them. Not local to me but I'd try them again. Deliveroo'd but still hot by the time I received them even though I'm two towns away.

Just got meals from here and so disappointed - chips pale and several had a greenish tinge. My top of my pie was like a biscuit - assume it had sat too long and dried out, on top and inside. Used to be such a good chippy. One person had a battered sausage that was ok.

Went last week for a dine in as it's been a while since I last went. Service was terrible and slow only two staff, I understood it's a Friday but the fella behind the till was too old and kept getting people's orders wrong. Tonight I gave them another chance with a take away... the sausage and batter was soggy not crispy and the curry sauce was that watery it might as well of been soup.

We've just had a 'small' fish and chips (if that was small, can't imagine how large is 'large') and it was soft and succulent. The batter was light and non-greasy and the chips were just right. The meal was served with onions and gherkins, with salad on the plate and with lovely fresh French bread and butter. The cappuccino afterwards was large and creamy and served with a mint chocolate. All in all, this was good value for money with friendly service and we have recommended this place to friends already.

I ordered a grilled fish burger (as stated on menu) but when it was close to being served it was obvious they were frying the fish and not grilling it. I pointed this out, and the fact that fried food makes me sick, and their response was "fried or grilled what's the difference?". I must point out that my previous visits here have been excellent. After a 20 minute wait for a takeaway order, the meal we sat down to at home was amongst the worst we have ever received. Ropey fish, uncooked chips and greasy batter - though, to be fair, the sheer volume of batter encasing not very much fish was an astonishing feat of culinary engineering. Thirty quid's worth of dinner that we threw straight in the bin in favour of a slice of toast. Avoid!

Having worked in many chip shops in my time and also being from the south coast originally, I have some idea of good quality chip shops and this is definitely a quality chippy I have had some very tasty meals hear the chips are always good never greasy and the fish is cooked to order and of a good quality the staff are very friendly and although I haven't used it there's a restaurant attached so if you decide to eat in you can in comfort. The only thing that let's this great place down is the over absorbent prices 70P for a bread roll over £2 for chips for example it is the most expensive chippy in the area but still worth a go if your looking for a nice bit of fish n chips.

I love the wall fish tank which separates the take away section from the restaurant. I love the condiment recesses and menus under the glass table top to ensure the table is clutter free. Each time: quick, discrete and efficient service; fish and chips perfect each time, well presented, with complementary gherkin nibbles starter. Proper disabled through access and toilets. Well, from the moment we walked into the restaurant I felt this was a great place to eat. The restaurant itself was pristine, and very comfortable. The staff were very attentive. The food came quite quickly and we were greatly impressed just how appetising it looked, and also how delicious it tasted. It is a bit expensive but certainly worth it for the quality of the food presented. And within the price the trimmings are included such as onions, and pickles, and tartare sauce etc. I think we will be returning here again and again. I would highly recommend this establishment. Prices reflect the quality, so don't expect cheap, but at the same time the meals include trimmings such as pickles and pickled onions, bread and butter and any sauces you desire. Menu available includes a selection of kids' meals and various drinks including alcoholic beverages. They also offer a lunchtime deal which looked good value if you fancy popping in at lunchtime.Staff are friendly and helpful and the venue, although a little limited space-wise, was clean and inviting with interesting ceiling decorations.I've no doubt take-away food is just as good, but cannot comment further as have not tried the take-out options. We were there on opening day, because I was invited (as the local Mayor) to perform the opening ceremony of this fish and chips restaurant. The very warm welcome we received included complimentary fish and chips. We learnt that the undoubted high quality of the meal was at least partly due to two special features: first the fish is fresh, not frozen; second the chips are made on the premises, starting by peeling the potatoes. No wonder they taste superior to what one too often gets from fish and chip shops. I understand that the owners also run 3 or 4 other similar venues, each with a slightly different name but that the Major Plaice in Ewell is not related to other restaurants with the same name located elsewhere. There are cheaper alternatives, but here the fish and chips are first class. I would be very happy to eat again in any of the venues run by this family.

Just come back from here with my mum and husband after a fantastic dinner. We asked for a pea fritter to munch on while we waited for our mains and it was delicious and HUGE! There was more than enough to placate the three of us. When the waitress bought out my mum's small cod, we thought it was the king size we had ordered for my husband, so you can imagine the size his was when it came! The fish was fresh, moist and tasty with a lovely crisp batter and plentiful chips. The dishes come with warm French bread, butter, salad garnish, fresh lemon, gherkins and pickled onions as standard. We told the waitress how impressed we were and ordered a portion of ice cream to share, which again was a generous portion with a decent butterscotch sauce. They later told us the ice cream was on the house. The only slight negative was the wine was a bit warm and there was no ice in the coke. However, we didn't mention this to the staff so they may well have corrected it had we done so. For a glass of wine, a 330ml beer, two cokes, two small cods, one king size cod, a pea fritter, mushy peas and ice cream, the bill was £42-very reasonable given the quantity and the quality of the food. We will definitely be back and will recommend to all!

The small cod & chips was big, the large cod & chips was enormous. Lovely crispy batter & served piping hot. Shame there was no vinegar, only "non brewed condiment", which is water, acetic acid, colouring & caramel - nothing like vinegar. The tartare sauce was also on the cheap & nasty side - a shame as with decent vinegar & good tartare sauce the fish & chips would be almost perfect. The restaurant is on the narrow side, but fine for tables of up to 4 people. Next time I'll get a takeaway & use my own vinegar & tartare sauce!

My fiancée and I came here to eat two days after the Major Plaice first opened. It looked like a nice restaurant and we were looking forward to a nice fish supper. My fiancee ordered prawn cocktail as a starter, but was told it was not available. We ordered a bottle of wine, but were brought over two glasses. When we explained this to the manager, he said he would give us the bottle free of charge and let us keep the two glasses we already had, which we thought was good service. We ordered cod and chips, which was a small sized portion, and it was very disappointing. The fish was OK but there were only about ten chips on the plate, and it looked like the salad (which was unimpressive) had been used to cover this up. This was about £8 for a small portion, which seems extortionate for a fish and chips restaurant. When the bill came in, it was just under £40, and we found that they had charged us for the bottle of wine, which we were told was on the house, and were glasses free instead, presumably because it would cost them less. The price was was way too high for the amount of food we were given, or the quality. The restaurant was cramped, hot, difficult to move through, and there was a table positioned right next to the toilet, which was unisex. All through the night the manager/owner (presumably), kept apologising to all the tables for not being able to provide what they had ordered. As we squeezed through to leave, a customer was becoming irate over more bad service. All in all, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience ,and we won't be returning.

A new licensed Fish & Chip shop in the heart of Ewell Village, providing take-away and a 40 seat restaurant. The premises are what one might call 'cosy' rather than spacious, but no less appealing for that.My first visit was mid-afternoon a few dys after the official oprning, and I was impressed with both the cleanliness generally and the focussed attitude of the four staff I saw in the cooking area - no idle chat here, everyone was getting on with something positive. I was quickly served with a portion of chips which turned out to be freshly cooked (no sign of the toughness one usually gets when chips have been kept warm too long between busy periods). I have tasted better, but not locally, and these were well up to standard for Surrey. On a subsequent visit, my two 6 year olds found the cod really delicious, well presented with tasty chips.Prices represent good value, and I'm sure this restaurant will succeed, providing as it does a welcome traditional English alternative to the various specialist restaurants in the village.
