The food is always incredible and the ladies who work there are always so incredibly sweet, even when they are rushed off their feet! They’re also brilliant with allergies and always are amazing with my partner who is lactose allergic (he orders a beef curry)

The food and service here is great, especially the Udon dish that I ordered. The taste is very flavorful. Would love to come back for more☺️ The atmosphere is also great too!

I've been to Maido many times. I love the authentic Japanese cuisine and the lovely welcoming atmosphere given by Koko. Keep doing what you do, it's so tasty.

Taste good but I would not say it’s the best Japanese food that I have ever tried. Not as authentic as I thought it would be based on people’s comments. Portion isn’t huge. The service is amazing. The shop is run by two Japanese lady.

Great little gem in Torquay delicious traditional Japanese food good to eat in or take away, staff are really nice, never had a bad experience here and keep going back when I have cravings for some soba😁

A delicious and varied menu. We turned up on a Saturday without a booking, but the staff managed to squeeze us in anyway. The food was fairly priced and everyone left very satisfied.

Great food, but opening hours are awful. Everytime I try to visit it’s always shut for one reason or another. Don’t trust opening hours on Google and one too many times iv driven all the way there to find out it’s shut.

Ordered the pork gyoza, beef Katsu and Chicken Kaarange Beef Curry - all were absolutely delicious, hot and all of the ingredients were clearly very fresh. Very friendly service and a tidy cosy atmosphere - will definitely be back

This was my first visit with my daughter on a saturday lunchtime and certainly won’t be my last ! Two very nice ladies cooking some fantastic authentic Japanese food.. We had a mixture of different dishes… all of which were hot, fresh and delicious! This is a great hidden gem that you must try !

Been saying I would try this place for years and finally went today (30/3/24) and it was absolutely amazing!! Food was delicious, well cooked, great portion sizes and at a great price! Went with three friends and we all had something different and everyone agreed their meal was great! We also finished of the meal with some nice green tea, which I highly recommend. The two ladies were so polite, friendly and welcoming. I loved the atmosphere as well, felt like we were just invited into their kitchen for a lovely meal, very homely. I will absolutely be going again, it's now my favourite place to eat in Torquay!

Had the chashu ramen and the teriyaki chicken onigiri. Both were super good. Especially the ramen. The broth was rich and flavoursome, and the presentation was very good. The people there were super nice and very accommodating and super nice, my brother doesn't like seaweed and took it off/out for him. The atmosphere was nice and calming, would definitely be back again to try new things.

The pork catsu curry was alright but would not recommend the ramen as the noodles were soggy and the chasu was very dry and salty. Its an experience but would not come back again.

I've eaten here before if you have the tongue for it maybe your a thing but personally i didn't enjoy the staff were lovely and tried some Asian soda which was different, I cant give lower than a 4 because the food wasn't bad was probably just me

A nice surprise! We were looking for a Japanese restaurant and stumbled across this one, decided to give it a try because of the good reviews and it did not dissapoint! Was greeted by a friendly Lady, ordered Teriyaki Chicken rice dish and was delicious, all freshly made to order. Good price and great tasting 👌

We had okonomiyaki plus this picture. The ramen is very simple, instant noodles, hard overcooked eggs and mild flavour. I would not buy again. The gyoza is good as one from shop. Would highly recommend for anyone who enjoys authentic & flavoursome Japanese food! The Ramen was really good decent portion size as well & great for the price to - also had an aloe vera drink. The two ladies who were working there was really friendly as well on arrival and departure! Overall lovely atmosphere and great food therefore highly recommend, thank you!

My wife and I had okonomiyaki here a few months ago, and it was great - the real thing. Kyoko, the owner is super-friendly and makes you feel really welcome. Will definitely be coming back again.

Absolutely fantastic! Came in with my work colleagues for a team building day where we were taught how to make sushi. Koko and Aya were brilliant! They even showed us how to write our names in Japanese. Taught us how how make maki rolls, California rolls and tofu pockets. We all left with plenty of sushi and all had an amazing time making it. Would highly recommend to any business looking for a team building experience. Thank you!

Went there and had the ramen and some sides. Really enjoyed all of the food and the best Japanese food in the area. Portions were a good size and all priced well not expensive. Service was very good, food came quick and would definitely go back.

Excellent Japanese restaurant with a good variety of dishes. We came for a quick dinner before going to the theatre and it was perfect. Gyōza, ramen and katsu curry were good.

Came here for lunch and the two women who worked here were so welcoming and helpful the whole time— the decorations inside make the whole experience of dining inside so comforting, it was a really good experience. I personally didn’t have a favourite dish from what we had ordered but food was good!

Edit: Decided to update as I've done as promised and returned a few more times. Have yet to have anything that wasn't an absolute delight, today was the Omu Rice special, a huge dome of tomato rice with veg and chicken inside, covered in a thin omelette and surrounded by a moat of just right beef curry. Would recommend to anyone who loves Asian food as it's fresh cooked and universally wonderful. Old review: Stopped in for lunch, wonderful resteraunt slightly off the beaten track that was a lucky Maps find. We had the Osaka special bento box which was lovely, generous amount of everything that was just right as a slightly large lunch, and even came with fruit as a nice cleanser at the end. Really nice overall menu selection of Japanese dishes that left me wondering if there was anything I wouldn't eat (answer:no) so must go back there again.

Service was a bit slow, but then we saw that as a good thing as they were busy, including quite a few local Japanese customers, which we also saw as a good thing. The restaurant itself is small (I'd guess less than 20 covers), but the atmosphere is good, and the food really fresh. Glad we found it (recommended by others whilst we were travelling).

I came here to dine with my partners brother, I dine here regularly but it was his first time. The food was spectacular, as usual. It is one of the most amazing, wonderful, hidden gem restaurants in the South west. If you are looking to try somthing new, or if you know you already like Japanese cuisine then you have to give this place a try. This place is authentic and friendly, I can't reccomend enough.

Good food but the dining experience was marred by uncouth customers who were tolerated by staff at the expense of other diners. Having a family meal with two children should not be accompanied by loud expletives which erupted literally every sentence on the table behind us. It's only a small place and, although customers were made to feel uncomfortable by two men in their late thirties/forties, the staff did not seem phased at all by them. The dining experience is a large part of why we eat out and this was one that I won't risk repeating if I have the kids with me. A pity as the food was very nice.

We visited for lunch to celebrate my sons birthday as he loves Japanese food and katsu curry. We ordered the katsu curry and the Japanese beef curry. Both of these sauces were the same and very very close to oxtail soup, or tinned curry. The gyoza were served and an empty dipping sauce dish, no nice fragrant dipping sauce, just to pour in the cheap soy sauce which was sat on the table. It was over £50 for a couple of plates of curry and rice, £7 for 2 cups of green tea. Very poor value for money, didn't find the service good, won't be going back.

My partner and I had a delicious lunchtime meal at Maido. She spotted the Okonomiyaki on the menu outside and simply had to try it. We've been looking to give it a go for some time now and we're glad we happened to walk past this restaurant and spot it! She upgraded to the Hiroshimayaki which was a small price more and includes a noodle base. The restaurant itself feels very homely and inviting. The two ladies cooking there when we went made it feel like a welcoming, warm, home cooked meal. The food itself was fresh, hot and delicious. A selection of various Japanese drinks can be bought there too to accompany your meal. It was a fantastic experience to try some real Japanese food, I can only recommend you give this place a try if considering it.

The unassuming outside hides an excellent eatery run by a lady from Osaka who produces delicious Japanese food. Many UK Japanese restaurants are owned by Korean people, so this authenticity is quite uncommon. I had the Osaka special: a mixture of dishes bento style as I couldn't choose just one. I had noodles, okonomiyaki, sushi rice in sauce, egg omelette and a little fruit. All of it was delicious. The other diners all looked like students; this food definitely deserves a wider audience to appreciate it.

this place is amazin. havnt a clue what we ordered .could do with more visual pics on the menu as who knows japenese. but what we ordered was amasin ... very well placed price def going to be a place to eat again .. great food . this is far from a noodle bar . this is japanese street food at its best

LOVE this place ❤ Food is great, nothing fancy just authentic Japanese dishes. They dont have any fish So that said the sushi is all vegetables. Not expensive. If you plan on going on a Saturday you would need to book. Yummmiii xx

As a vegetarian, Japanese food is limited for me and I lose weight when visiting the country itself. In this establishment, however, the choice is good and the flavours are fabulous: umami and kokomo abound. The food is beautifully present and all the staff are excellent, polite and nice to chat with. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your seating place. This ‘Osaka’ style food has become my favourite eatery since moving down to Torquay. HIGHLY recommended.

I had Okonomiyaki for the first time and it was so yummy! Definitely gonna come back and try the other food they have. The staff are really friendly and make the nicest matcha latte. I was so full afterwards.

My 14yo daughter is mad about all things Japanese so when we saw the great reviews we thought we would try Maido during our visit to Torquay. We absolutely loved it! Super fresh food, friendly welcome and a manga library to read while you wait = very happy daughter (and all of us!). Wish we lived closer - we would go every week and work our way through the menu.

After spending days eating the usual rubbish you eat when on holiday I was in need of something fresh and tasty and I was absolutely thrilled when we stumbled across a previous review for Maido and headed in their direction. The food was prepared fresh to order and tasted AMAZING. The staff were lovely and friendly too which made the whole lunchtime experience fantastic. Yes its slightly off the main strip but well worth a visit :-)

Went there today for some lunch with my buddy. Food was fresh and delicious. The Gyoza are to die for. Lovely calm and warm atmosphere, great service, and very nice and clean. Will defiantly be coming back.
