Maidens Head Pub in Canterbury

Great food Platter for 2 at 3.30 in the dafternoon with welcoming service and so near the station where we arrived. What a great way to start a few days in Canterbury.

If you like a proper pub, rather than one of those other pubs, then this is the place to go. You’ll know it’s a proper pub cos the sign outside tells you that it is! The locals are friendly but a fruitier version of the vernacular is evident, a kind of coarser Chaucer. He’d deffo approve, I’m sure. The hand-pulled London Pride hit the mark and together with a lovely pinot, the prices were more than reasonable. The live music group were a tight ensemble and altho a bit middle of the road for me, they were a spot-on addition to the evening. As a side order, throughout the evening two of the local ne'er-do-wells thought fit to square up against each other at the bar. No actual violence ensued and it was more akin to watching an over inflated under-cooked sausage roll attempt to provoke a walking tattoo into a hand bag swinging contest. If you like proper pubs, with great beer and entertainment with a mild touch of impending violence, then this is the place. Personally I absolutely loved it.

Seven of us had a Christmas meal last Saturday evening. The restaurant was full, but our meals were served together and were delicious. We had chosen in advance but the servers took the time to make sure we all had exactly what we wanted on the day. All the staff were friendly and we did not feel rushed to finish. A very enjoyable evening.

My partner and I often come here for a roast or a pizza and the food is just phenomenal. We’re both vegetarian and the options are so amazing. The staff here are always so friendly and it has such a welcoming atmosphere. We also often bring our small dog with us and they couldn’t be more welcoming to doggy’s either. 10/10 would 100% recommend to anyone.

I went to visit my friend for the weekend, we popped into The Maidens Head for a drink on the way back from the station, it is a lovely pub and the owners and staff are also lovely. We popped in again on Sunday for a roast and I can honestly say it was the best roast I have ever eaten in a pub. I hate to admit it but it was even better than my own roasts.. Well done. I will be popping in again the next time I am visiting my friend.

A well run pub with friendly service and great food. The introduction of authentic Jamaican food on Thursday and Friday is an exciting new addition. Already excellent for Sunday Roasts the pub offers an exciting new variety of choices.

The bar was lovely, perfectly put together for social distancing and felt safe. We ordered from the pop-up kitchen as the menu sounded amazing and it did not disappoint! Can’t wait to go back again and try the rest of the menu

Polite bar staff and excellent service from the minute we stepped through the door. The waitress was polite and allowed us all the time we needed to choose from the menu. The food arrived promptly and they were able to cater to my other half’s more fussy order perfectly! I had the Brisky Beef Bun It with Fries which was amazing, the blueberry bbq sauce was perfect with the beef, all of the food was filling. Ur not too heavy. Thank you to the maidens head for having this pop up kitchen and for providing a great experience!

Had a amazing paella from here. Cooked during lockdown and collected. Seafood was amazing. Would highly recommend

A group of 6 of us popped in here before a visit to Escape Kent and felt so comfortable and welcomed we actually returned after our trip! We sat around the sofas catching up while playing scrabble, Jenga & connect four just lovely. We will definitely be returning.

Went for Sunday lunch and had booked in advance. When we got there our only choice was the roast (start of lunch) . When we got the food, the beef was stone cold and the vegetables wern't much better. The root vegetable mash was lumpy and the carrot which was stuck in the Yorkshire pudding hadn't even been peeled. I was exceedingly disappointed having read other reviews, it did not live up to expectations. I will not be going again especially as it cost £15 each for one miserable course.

One not to miss book it as they get busy and by 3 all gone homemade food meat usually marinated all night Chrispy pork and the vegetables roast and roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings so big and fluffy and a jug of gravy had a lot of Sunday lunches and for me this is 10 out of 10 it's a pub great hosts and they do a tapas seafood on Thursday night's paella free jug Shangri again book it and all inexpensive

Lovely pub currently having a Spanish food night on Thursday evenings, "Paella Night with tapas and sangria". Fantastic freshly cooked Paella. They also do a Sunday Roast and Pizza nights. Book ahead to be sure.

Saw the signs outside this pub which intrigued us. Decided to give it a go but with not high expectations. However, we were in for a real treat. Absolutely authentic, delicious and definitely not to be missed. Sangria was spot on and much needed after so much walking around Canterbury. We had to wait for the meal but the genuine aromas emanating from the kitchen meant that it was going to be worth it - and so it was. You get two Tapas dishes included in the deal - each was equally tasty too. Very friendly and welcoming hostesses.

A group of 12 of us had struggled to book a table big enough at short notice but we then chanced upon this....Food was very well cooked and presented with generous portions and was very tasty with plenty of gravy! (Even Dom liked it!). Jeremy and Monica did a fantastic job and the delicious Sticky Toffee pudding completed the feast! They even got their new wine glasses out to celebrate the occasion! We shall be back!

Huge portions and all delicious - went for the beef which was accompanied by Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese, mixed turnip and swede - horse radish on the side and a large jug of gravy. Not quite sure how I ate such a generous portion. Served by the land lady and bar maid with charm and smiles.

Casi pasé, siendo chef de marisco y visitando solo Canterbury, encontré a la doncella, ofreciéndole una paella que no creía que fuera auténtica, pero la esposa dijo que nunca se sabe, así que se reunió con una hermosa dama española que dirige el pub con su esposo y, para ser honesto, el personal del fantástico bar, especialmente la señora que había trabajado en bienes raíces, de todos modos hablo mucho, pero si quiere una gran sangría de paella, etc. el jueves por la noche, si viviera en Canterbury, este sería mi local, muchas gracias, fantástica paella y excelente hospitalidad espa ola. Me and my family went in for the ‘Sunday roast’ and we wasn’t let down the food was sublime! Was a lovely meal.Only slight criticism I would say is we felt a little uncomfortable as we felt like the staff were on top of us. Just a bit of a strange vibe going on.But again food was excellent!

This is by far the best roast around and we’ve tried a few. Recently put the prices up by a couple of quid but it’s definitely worth it. Beautiful meat, lashings of gravy and gorgeous fresh veg. Excellent customer service. Highly recommend.

Lovely hosts, pub and food. The Sunday roasts are the best value for money in Canterbury. We had the Paella on Thursday night which was delicious with free tapas. Definitely recommended. Muchas graçias Jeremy & Monica

In January we visited Canterbury and we found the Maidens Head Pub.

Sunday roast was lusssssshhhhh the nut roast was amazing and the meat eaters were all very happy with theirs to. Big portions all homemade including the deserts. reasonably priced and service was great. This place has really changed and all for the good. Looking forward to going back! Dom the lad working there was extremely helpful and the German woman serving was great x

Sunday lunch really is a great meal in this pub, excellent choices with a super selection of fresh vegetables. Puddings look great but didn't have any room!

Went for Sunday roast with my daughter's & partner & my partner. it was amazing, best roast we have had in a long time. staff was really friendly. pub is really relaxing we will be back.

Me and my family went here we have two young children and they was so warming and wasn’t at all fusssd when my two year old had a major melt down !

Took a group of 16 of us to the Maidens Head for pizza prior to the going to the Escape Rooms a few doors away. Chose the location as it was close, but was aware that I last went there a few years ago it was a ropey. Whilst the place has kept it's traditional old pub character, the food was superb, and all the group thought the food and service was absolutely ace. The pizza's are far better than you get at Zizzi, Pizza Express, Domino's, etc, and very reasonably prices. So good, we came back for a few hours afterwards and would have no hesitation in recommending them to others.

This is the second time I have been here. Having had such a great experience last time, I recommended to my colleague that we had a quick drink before, and then food after, our business was concluded.

I’ve had a lot of roasts in my time, but the Maidens head is definitely the best in Canterbury! Highly recommended. Great portions and great quality. Side of gravy and all the veg you could ask for. The meat is just beautiful. And let’s not forget the fabulous service and staff. Get yourself booked in for next Sunday!!

Ontzettend goed eten. Op zondag keuze uit diverse "roasts" (lam, kip, rund) voor € 12,50. En dan krijg je ook wat! Heerlijk. Echte Engelse sfeer met zeer vriendelijk bediening.

We had a roast in this friendly well run pub. It was home cooked with jugs of real gravy. Pink local beef with a huge selection of veggies and roasted root veg too. Great selection of traditional puddings too but only if you can manage a second course! We will be back

My children loved the roast here. With so many places offering a roast on Sunday it's difficult to find a great one. However the Maidens head certainly doesn't disappoint. I had belly of pork. It was wonderful. I've knocked off a star only because the dessert options are few and the ladies toilets were really, really cold! Other than that it's fantastic

Probably the best Sunday roast in Canterbury. Pizzas are good too. Excellent pub grub, good value, friendly service. No hesitation in recommending.

Called in here after visiting the city and on our way back to the Canterbury hotel which is five minutes level walk away.

Went here for the rugby, they have a great screen and really friendly staff. Liked the atmosphere, got pretty busy but you never had to wait long for being served.

In England on holiday from the states. Driving into Canterbury at lunch time on Sunday and saw Maidens Head Restaurant and decided to stop in and give it a try. I'll say they didn't seem like they were expecting anyone who wasn't a local, but they greeted us warmly, shared stories and gave us great tips on what historical sites were most interesting in Canterbury. The food was good too!

Het is een pub met geweldige pizza's. Ook het andere eten is prima. Het is er erg gezellig en we voelden ons bijzonder welkom.

We had a dinner in there with my husband and son and as I used to work as a chef I can confidently state that this was my best Sunday roast dinner! (And I am not a big fun of Sunday roast in general) It was absolutely amazing; the veg was nicely seasoned and roasted, the meat was soft and the leek with the cheesy sauce was just a great idea! Well done chef! :D highly recommend the place that comes down to the great food, kind service and the atmosphere :) thank you !
