Phoned to ask to speak to owner or manager but was refused to give a name ( said they didn’t know who name of either was) I then phoned back and told same, I was put on hold for 10 minutes then answered and hung up, I was polite and courteous at all times, I have used this take away service for years and after this service will not use again, this is a lesson in how to loose a historic customer. Good food but with severe competition they seriously need to improve on atrocious customer service. I won’t be returning , Shame on you !!!!

We were taking a short break at the Tollgate hotel and decided to try the local Indian restaurant just a short walk away. The menu had a good selection of Indian dishes so we went with our usual selection that we have at our local one in Suffolk. The portions were slightly smaller but with side dishes, we’re still sufficient for us to share. The quality was excellent and very well cooked. The flavours were many and better than we were used to so it was a very pleasant evening. The service was excellent with very friendly waitress. There is no doubt that we will eat here again during our next visit to the area. I would recommend you give this venue a try especially if you’re staying close by.

My advice from personal experience do not go there. Staff very rude and unwelcoming. Main course was ok but expensive. Woe and behold if you dare ask for alternative on pickle tray to have with poppadoms!! From some previous reviews think they must treat regular local customers to new ones visiting the area. We come from Midlands and eat regularly in Indian restaurants so know we are used to better expiences,

It's the staff that let it down. I guess they have small village mentality and also they're the only restaurant in village. Walked in and ignored. Asked for a booth in a more or less empty restaurant and it was hard work for them to give me this. Not cordial. They add 10% for service to bill which really annoyed me as I was doing all the work in that exchange by trying to be so nice so they would treat me nicer. Curry was bland. Also menu says poppadoms a quid, charged £2. Couldn't be bothered to argue about this, but honestly, it's a rubbish place with mardy cold unfriendly vibe and frankly I'd eat on a bench with a takeout than go there again. I make a better curry anyway. Oh, wine overpriced too. V limited menu.

I don’t like writing bad reviews but this is a waste of a spot in Steyning that could be filled with a good restaurant. Firstly the restaurant wasn’t busy and we were asked to wait at a table at the front for a long time. The man was abrupt when I wanted to order food at the same time as drinks and didn’t take our food order. They weren’t attentive at all and when asking for extra condiments, had to wait a long time. The food was the worst curry I’ve eaten genuinely the chicken tasted foul and the sauce tasted the same in both curries and so bland. The price is ridiculous! £60 we ended up paying for without any naan bread and only a drink each. I honestly feel it’s an absolute rip off.

Went for dinner was waiting for ages to be seated. The decor was very dated and no vibe at all. Staff were not friendly and lively like most curry house staff are. Now the food was another level of rank. We ordered two different dishes and they both tasted exactly the same, watery bland tomato. You can get a better curry from Iceland. Then let's talk about the price. Felt like I'd had my pants pulled down as everything was bad, so bad yet the bill was so much higher than wede added up and was £60 for two people!

Good food and friendly staff. We visited during a spell of very cold weather and the restaurant was absolutely freezing. In actual fact it was so cold some of our party had to wear their coats, hats and scarves during the meal! Even the waitress was wearing a Gilet! When asked about the heating, we were told it was on but this was obviously not true. I have never experienced such uncomfortable dining conditions. I’d recommend the restaurant, but not if the temperatures are freezing outside, as it will be freezing inside as well.

We go there early evening mostly on the way home from days out. Simple menu but they have always managed to accommodate any special requests. Draught cobra to go with the curries and a zero version for the driver. Quick service but not hassled. Building looks old from outside and fits in with the rest of Bramber, but the inside is modern and maybe a bit "rectangular". But hey we go there for the food,

Arrived in the beautiful village of Bramber and the car parks seemed quite busy, a good sign usually and I was a bit worried we wouldn't get a table as we hadn't booked. Pleasantly surprised the restaurant had plenty of tables spare which I originally put down to the time of day for a curry, appears not. The food was sub standard to say the least, but the real problem was the service. For the money we paid I would expect a very high standard of food and service but these people seemed to have a vendetta against customers. I assume the lady on front of house and the older gentleman serving were the owners and it was clear the bad service was led from the top. A grunt on arrival from both - and placing our order seemed to really inconvenience them, made clear with our drinks being slammed down on the table. Quibbling the extortionate price for a couple of watered down half pints of lager made it clear we wouldn't get anything out of complaining (£4 per half pint in case you're wondering which wasn't what the menu said) These people don't deserve to be in business so certainly don't deserve your custom. Go somewhere else!

Popped in for a family dinner at around 6pm on Saturday. Wasnt very busy so thought we had a bit of a result. Couldn't have been more wrong!Older woman who took us to our seats came across abrupt and rude, we should have clocked the issue then but we were hungry and through the door.We ordered a chicken korma, prawn tikka, 2 side tarka Dahl's, 2 rice, 2 naans, 1 side Bombay potatoes and 2 HALF PINTS OF COBRA - this came to £65+ which included the cheek of just shy of £6 service charge. When we queried the price of the beers we were told quite abruptly they were £4 EACH FOR HALF A PINT - people who run the Maharajah you are not the bloody Ritz, we had cobwebs on our table.PS we also heard to rather rudely and within earshot heard you discussing us querying the beer pricing...again, you are not a posh eatery or pub or in london. £4 for half a pint is shocking.Anyway on to the food, The person eating the korma said the chicken was dry and overcooked. Sauce was extremely runny and tasteless. The 2 tarka daals literally had 5 lentils between them and had the consistency of me going through the depths of the flu.The Bombay Potatoes...I really wish I took a picture of them, they looked like lightly orange glazed pre-cooked pears...I have no idea what was going on these.Didn't stay for a desert, didn't bring up the service charge or refuse to pay anything as the vibe of the Maharajah is one of angry sadness. It felt like anything we said would be taken with hostile contempt thus the only thing we can do (and by reading the reviews, others feel the same) is try and make other people aware of just how rubbish this place is.I say this with no uncertainty, this is the worst Indian and dinner experience I have ever had.

Popped in for a takeaway as we were nearby. It was the worst curry I’ve ever had. Chicken Tikka Madras was tasteless and had a runny sauce. The mush room rice had a rotten mushroom in it. We arrived for a birthday meal. Offered a table which was not a booth (four booths free). Waiter had to ask another waiter if it was alright! Before being asked what we would like to drink we were asked if we would like papadums and made our order. They duly arrived and with a variety of dips. These were fine but we would of liked a drink with them. We kept trying to catch a waiters attention to order drinks and once were successful to be told would be back but did not return. Tried again and a waiter said would be back to take order. One of our party was just about to go to the bar to make an order after thinking the waiter was not coming back when he did return and took our drinks order. All this time the phone had been constantly ringing and the waiters were running around trying to meet the takeaway and restaurant customers needs which they were not able to do. We then asked a waiter about food and he told us our food would be with us shortly which was quiet a miracle as we had not been able to order anything at this point. He rushed away and another waiter arrived a few minutes later to take our order. Food arrived after a long wait. I had Chicken tikka bhuna which was tasteless and I tried my husbands chicken tikka peshwari which was also very bland. We were both very disappointed with the food, service and ambience of the place. We have dined here several times previously, and always regarded it as one of the better Indian Restaurants in this part of Sussex. Our recent experience was, however, disappointing. We had reserved a table on a Saturday evening. Service was extremely slow, and after enquiring after our meal, we were told curtly " as you can see we are rammed". Well actually the restaurant was only half full, but it seemed that takeaway customers were being given priority. Not helped by the owner arguing publicly with the lady at the front desk. The restaurant's air conditioning was off, and the windows were all steamed up. When the food finally arrived, it was very good. But no hot towels were supplied afterwards, and we did not risk ordering dessert or coffee.

We had dinner here on Friday night for a family birthday party. We had a great evening and having read the reviews here which seem to range from 1* to 5* I thought I'd add my own to the mix! We really had lovely food - it is more expensive than a cheap takeaway at home (as per some of the comments on price on the reviews here) but then again it is a sit down curry with restaurant overheads. I really like the take away locally that we use but this was really delicious so felt worth more money. We had a variety of curries and sides. I had some of a prawn puri starter which was lovely and a lamb samosa - delicious. I also tried some of a lamb shaslik which came on a hot sizzling plate and a prawn masala dish which I shared with my daughter. It was all lovely. Limited options around the area for curry, but as a local restaurant serving a fairly limited customer base, it is okay. Does a decent balti and the specials are unusual enough to be interesting. We were running late from Brighton heading home and decided to stop off. Well, all I can say is that this has to be one of the worst curry places I have ever eaten at; the popadoms were stale and smelt rancid, the food served was swimming in oil and the paratha was just caked in ghee, in fact so heavy, we struggled to break it up. The biryani was acceptable but the takha dhal was just too processed and almost sunflower yellow with additives. All this for a sum of GBP 40.00 and we left 2/3rds of our meal. The owner was just happy to collect the money without delivering one question as to why we left our food.

Never quite busy enough to justify the restaurant size, but quite a few people in for takeaways. Food is fine, nothing spectacular, although some of the chefs specials are more unusual than your regular Indian. Good service, efficient timings.

Visited as a couple on a Saturday night. It was fairly quiet but not empty. It was a bit more cosy than I had expected having read previous reviews. There was some background music on when we arrived but this seemed to stop leaving it lacking atmosphere. Its a large restaurant and simply decorated so it needs music, candles etc to give atmosphere. Anyway the food was nice. Service was efficient. Overall it was fine, good to get your curry fix but nothing special.

A very large restaurant that could have seated a wedding reception but had few diners when we were there! The food and service were not exceptional but we had an acceptable Indian meal and a good chat with our waiter Sami.

After visiting Sri Lanka recently, we were invited to a birthday dinner there. I thought I would be able to make a good judgment of the curry after I've had such delightful curries in Sri lanka, but alas not good at all.,no resemblance at all. Loads of desiccated coconut, and not a hint of cinnamon . Looking around the table all the curries seemed to have the same color and texture. Probably came from a general purpose sauce, with different meats and prawns added! Also the table was booked for 8,30pm on a Saturday, and the place was empty, and remained empty when we left, a little worrying ! This is only based on my meal and a comparison to the real thing ! service was good and polite.

I want to start by saying our food was delicious. I don't believe I have ever had a poor meal there. However the whole experience could be so much more. The restaurant management have invested in a large dining room, with nice lighting. It now needs to fill it with people or the complete lack of atmosphere will just allow the restaurant to die. In my opinion it needs to review the front of house service, try some marketing to encourage customers. Maybe discount offers or complimentary wine etc. It's a great place, been there a long time, I would like to see it thrive.

Crispy papadoms, followed by the best tandoori chicken I've had for ages. The first courses came quickly, the mains took a little longer but we were totally fine with that. We don't want to rush our evening meals out and it means your meal is cooked fresh. KP Delight was just that. Wasn't sure what to expect (house dish) but it was totally delightful, good flavours and not too spicy. There may only have been 3 king prawns but they were MASSIVE so quite enough. Attentive service throughout. Would look forward to eating here again should we be back in the area.

Service very good and courteous and food excellent. Lovely blends of flavouring, subtle fragrances and not overly rich sources. Good balance. We visit here often and have takeaways frequently. They also are happy to work with individuals dietary needs which is really helpful in our family.

Our local indian restaurant closed, sadly so we thought we would try the one in the next village, the Maharajah in Bramber, West Sussex. We chose Chicken Bhuna, Chicken Badami, Bombay potatoes. We love indian spicy food but nothing too hot! The meal was a terrjfic disappointment, all three dishes were totally bland, tasted of nothing much at all, edible but that's about all you could say, much like school dinners used to be! I felt so let down that I phoned the Maharjah, not to complain, but to draw their attention to the fact, thinking maybe their chef was not on duty tonight? I was told curtly that the Badami and the Bombay potatoes were mild, not spicy. I pointed out that 'mild' does not mean tastless, that 'spicy' does not necessarily mean 'hot'. 'hot' comes from chilies and we love the aromatic spices usually found in indian cookery, turmeric, cardamom, coriander, cumin etc. My feedback was not appreciated.So...if you want a tasty meal, I cannot recommend you go to the Maharajah

3 of us visited yesterday evening for a sit down curry. Not too busy so sat down swiftly. Not a traditional Indian and a bit "clinical" inside. Didn't get served for a while which was disappointing, but eventually ordered food and wine. Food was of an ok standard, wine and tap water all ok. Service average.Sadly when we got the bill we had to question the value as it seemed high, over £30 each for a basic Indian (even with a cheap bottle of wine) looked excessive. We questioned the price and the waiter went away for about 7 - 10 minutes, not good. He eventually came back and the figure had reduced by about £12.00. Eat here if you wish but don't expect quick attentive service and check your bill !

I must say I am very surprised to see negative reviews. Excellent service staff are very polite and helpful A member of staff always opens the door and thanks you for your custom. Food is outstanding fresh spices made traditionally from scratch. The best I have tried! A must for foodies.

Right here we go, parking not too bad free street and car park opposite, it's situated in a lovely village. We got there at 1830hrs and the car park was almost full. The restaurant looks quaint from the outside, but as you enter, it's modern, I bit bland really and not what you would expect. Staff lovely and helpful. Food ordered and when it came it was well presented, one thing I liked was the larger tables they have, you are not cramped in, one thing is I personally think is the stand alone seats do not have much seat padding.Anyway the food was really tasty and the right amount. In all it was very nice. Now comes the main bit.....Would we recommend the resturant. Yes we would.Would we go there again.... Yes we would.

What a poor meal. We happened to stumble on this restaurant one evening looking for a lovely Indian meal. Rudest service know to man. Food was poor bland and non descript. Quite disgusting. We should ahve been paid to eat here! In fact even if we were paid would not have stayed. What was absolutely hilarious was the fact that they added service to the bill without asking.. I MEAN HONESTLY!

I have been a loyal customer since the restaurant opened, and the Maharajah was the place that everybody was measured against in the area. Since their long drawn out building works, the place has lost is character and the food has definitively gone quickly downhill, especially the takeaways, that have little flavour and watery, a friend of mine went there last week and is convinced they are using MSG as he had after affects that he links to this. Cannot be sure.As other people have said the woman front of house always protests they are busy and will have to set a table, and is generally seems quit rude to people who have not booked. I think they may understaffed, at least in the Kitchen. It is rarely busy to bursting point, unlike a few years ago when people were queuing out of the door to get a table or takeaway. I have now tried the Khushbu in Beeding that people are saying is really good and always busy, they were right. And the Maharajah is now very expensive compared with other restaurants.

We went in this restaurant bank holiday Monday. The waitress said have we booked we said no she said take a seat I'll lay up a table - the restaurant had a few tables but would not say it was overly busy. The waitress said it's been very busy yet we walked pass an hour before deciding to eat in there there was nobody in there. - we were shown our table - we were not offered any drinks it took a good half hour for us to get our drinks and that was only coz I stopped the waitress in her stride and ask for drinks - she reluctantly stopped and went back to the bar to get our drinks. We had our poppadom for starter - they had not taken our mains order. We were clearly showing the staff we had finished our poppadoms and were ready to order our mains - probably a good 25 mins - a man took our mains order - very abrupt rude man. When the food eventually came it was just thrown on the table not telling us which dish was what. I'm not an Indian lover and like to know what I'm eating and if it's hot. - the big joke of it all is there's a service charge! Service charge for what appalling service for expensive food which the food was ok!! - not recommended and won't be back

Just visited the restaurant and explained that I could not eat dairy. The management (apparently new) went out of their way to accommodate me. The food was delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
