Maharaja Indian Cuisine in Cotswold

A lovely experience. The food was packed full of flavour and portions were more than generous. Amazing service, nothing was too much trouble. A really enjoyable evening, looking forward to visiting again soon !!

Ordered our food as normal on a face to face basis. Then left the chefs to prepare whilst I had a couple of drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere and sport on the TV. I then went to collect our food at the agreed time only to be told “2 minutes” which turned into 20! After waiting in the cold eventually the takeaway was handed over, not impressed. On returning my wife and I opened the food only to find what we had ordered was either wrong or very substandard. I have been using the Maharaja for over 18 years and this is has been so disappointing. Sad to say after all these year I don’t think we will be using your restaurant again. Wish you all the best for the future, but we will not be part of this.

Excellent seafood curry. We were originally offered Indian fair from our hotel, but their menu seemed a little limited. We found maharaja just about a five minute walk. This is our first restaurant stop and the Cotswolds as we start our trek down the Cotswolds way. We visited and put in a reservation for 6 PM . We arrived a little early and had a cider and beer at the pub out front. Great friendly local place with very affordable ciders and beers. We arrived a little after six for our reservation and were seated immediately. They have an extensive offering it was really hard to choose . I started with the Adha scallops - it had a light ginger and herb flavoring on the baby scallops. For dinner I had the Bangla fish Tawa- it has shrimp and shellfish in it, and the sauce is described as sensational, hot, sweet and tangy relish sauce - it was a light brown sauce that was indeed fantastic and slightly tangy. I would definitely order this again. I also had a side order of saag. We had garlic naan for the table. Other table favorites included the duck . The tandoori duck starter was excellent. For our rice accompaniment, we had the coconut rice that has a little bit of sweetness to it and the fried rice which was more savory.

Best curry I've had in a long time Dogs are allowed in the pub but no dog friendly area in the restaurant. Considering it's a tourist area you'd think they would accommodate dogs like every other restaurant in the town. We had to lock our dog up in the car. Food was so good but love our dog more so wont be returning again.

Butter lamb was very tender and have amazing flavor. Highly recommend!

This is a wonderful, friendly restaurant, with great food, excellent service and a really warm welcome. We arrived shortly after opening and within half an hour it was filling up and had a constant stream of diners collecting takeaway meals. And such good value especially in an area of gastro pubs!

Exceptional Indian cuisine in the Cotswolds. We hadn't planned on having Indian food but the pub we went to eat at was not serving food on a Sunday evening (NB you have to have Sunday lunch!). The punters of the pub suggested this restaurant and we were very pleased they did. Best Indian food we've ever had!

We came from the netherlands to visit chipping campden. We decided to check out this restaurant and it's good we did! We decided to order 2 starters between 4 eaters and it was plenty! He even made us mango lassi (which was great). Thank you very much Mr. Mehedi for the great dining experience!

With its extensive menu and delicious Indian dishes this dining experience was fantastic. The food was excellent, the service fast and friendly and we will definitely be back. What a great find in Chipping Campden.

The 1 star is purely for the food, which was fine. This is my first poor review on this platform but I had to do it. We were a group of 8 people including two 3 year old kids. The food was ordered and when it came out we realized we needed to order more dishes. When we tried to order another dish, the staff member kindly let us know that they have a 'order just once' policy - completely made up. He then went on to inform us 'this is not India or Bangladesh'. He did get us one extra dish but we were then too afraid to order anything else (chapati/rice etc). I can't believe this happened in 2024, but here we are. Sigh.

Nach einem ereignisreichen Tag und einer schönen Wanderung sind wir in diesem gemütlichen Lokal in Chipping Campden eingekehrt und wurden vom Kellner Mehedi ausgezeichnet beraten und sehr zuvorkommend und freundlich bedient. Das Essen selbst war ebenfalls ausgezeichnet. Das Lammfleisch zerging einem auf der Zunge :). Schade, dass wir nur für einen Kurzurlaub in den Cotswolds waren, sonst würden wir im Maharaja öfter vorbeischauen.

We had a weeks holiday in Paxford and fancied a take away first night and found the maharaja on line,the restaurant is behind the volunteer pub.This was without doubt the best Indian food we have ever had it was delicious so much so that we had another one on our last night. If you are local you should support this restaurant and if you are visiting make sure you try The Maharaja out at least twice!

A truly wonderful restaurant serving up exciting dishes that you don’t see on the menu at many other Indian restaurants in the region! I would also like to give a special thank you because the waiters were particularly wonderful and accommodating when we visited. It’s a wonderful place and we will definitely be coming back

We had a fantastic night at the Maharaja on Saturday night. A party of 24, we were made so welcome by Mehedi and his team of waiters who couldn’t do enough to make our evening special. The food was also fantastic! All the food arrived together, (not easy as everyone had made different choices) it was piping hot and was absolutely delicious, it’s honestly the best I’ve eaten - and all our guests agreed. Rahman the head chef came to check everyone’s was happy with their food too - so we were able to say thank you - all the staff at the are brilliant, and such lovely people! If you’ve never been to the Maharaja or the Volunteer Inn, you are definitely missing out!

Just had the most amazing meal. We have eaten in many Indian restaurants but this has to be one of the best! Generous portions cooked with fresh produce, herbs and spices made for a wonderful evening. Friendly staff too….honestly couldn’t have asked for more. We will definitely return when next in Chipping Campden!

Our first time in Chipping Campden and we explored all the available dining options with a Thursday night at this recommended restaurant. Very good service as was the food. Attached to the Volunteer Inn so good beers too! Furthermore, if you want to stay they have rooms as well!

Recommended so booked for a meal, it was amazing. Staff very friendly, wouldn’t hesitate to return. We had 2 courses which was very reasonably priced.

My wife and I were hiking a section of the Cotswold Way with two other couples from our hometown of Cincinnati OH. We spent our first night, before starting the hike, at the Volunteer Inn in Chipping Campden, to which Maharaja is attached. We had a great experience. The food is excellent: I had Chili Chicken, 10 out of 10 on the spiciness scale. When the server brought it, he noticed that it didn’t look spicy enough and took it back for more heat. When it returned, it was just what I’d had in mind. I love spicy food, and it’s rare that a restaurant hits the mark. Maharaja did. All six of us really like our food and the service. I want to put in a special word about Mehedi, our server. He was, as implied above, terrific. Attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and friendly without going overboard. He really added to our enjoyment of the evening. I recommend Maharaja without reservation.

Tucked away behind the Volunteer Inn this is not your usual curry house setting. That said they trade off each other and business is brisk so best book in advance. As part of the original building the restaurant occupies what was once a living room with a fireplace. The decoration is a bit spartan and the bar area within looks like a canteen serving hatch. But we are here for the food which was freshly cooked and well constructed with spices. Attentive service on what was a busy summer evening. Worth hunting down.

We ate here last week and the Chicken Tikka was absoloutely delicious, we both absoloutely loved our meal, the guys serving were really nice and helpful providing fast service with no waiting around. We will definitely be regulars for takeaways too. Thanks for a delicious Indian!!!

Lovely traditional Indian food, starting with pappdums and chutney, great peshwari nan, tasty starter plate, and delicious mains. We'll go back for sure when we return to Chipping Campden!

We loved this restaurant, the portions were very generous, my vegetarian platter was a delicious meal in it self plus we’ve been to many Indian restaurants and this is the first time I’ve had a puri with a veg curry on top with 2 onion bhaji’s, a samosa, salad and 3 chutneys all at £4.99 it was seriously delicious. My husband had the prawn puri and he’s hard to please usually, but he loved it. Our mains were equally impressive The food was really reasonably priced, the service was good, thank you to Islam who was very friendly.

My husband and I visited on Friday on a weekend trip away and this place had been recommended in a guest book in the place we were staying and it didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious, we were offered popadoms straight away which is always nice and the drinks came quickly. My husband was particularly happy that the restaurant is linked to a pub so he could have a “proper” pint of Guinness which he said was a very good pint! We ordered onion bajhis to start which came with a trio of sauces - the dish was so tasty. The mains we ordered were the chicken tikka makhani and mixed Baltic both with mushroom fried rice - all of which were delicious. The makhani which I had was perfect as I don’t like overly spicy. The staff were lovely and the restaurant itself was really nice. The only negative is we don’t live close enough to come all the time!

We were staying in the Volunteer Inn and got take-away from here one evening. The staff were so helpful and kind and the food was exceptional. Excellent value for money.

This is a really busy little restaurant in a lovely medieval village. Lucky to get a table,as a lot of big parties were arriving. Food really nice, staff pleasant.

Lovely meal at Maharaja. The restaurant is in the courtyard behind, but attached to the Victory Inn pub. Classic Indian restaurant style menu but with some unique dishes. The staff were really fantastic and we were served by Mehede who looked after us all evening and was very quick to attend to every request. Great that the bar from the pub is shared with the restaurant, and you can see the kitchens as you walk in!

After very good, cheerful and friendly advice, we had a delicious meal here. It's funny that the drinks come from the pub. Symbiosis between pub and Indian restaurant.

If you like Indian food you need to come here on your visit to Chipping Campden. It is located at the rear of the Volunteer Pub on the Main Street and serves all the traditional Indian cuisine you would expect. It is well worth a visit and the staff are great.

This was a takeaway meal and it was of the highest quality. It was hot and wonderful when we got it home and enjoyed a very satisfying two course,Indian meal with all the delight of a city centre restaurant !

First time eating here as visitors but if we were local we would eat here often! The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a good choice on the menu and our dishes were absolutely delicious; we cleared our plates. We could taste the different herbs and spices. Truly authentic, freshly made dishes.

The Maharaja of Chipping Campden is the real deal if you're into authentic Indian food. Mehedi's service takes it to the next level - he's super friendly and knows the menu inside out, recommending both of our meals which were amazing. It was so good we went back two nights in a row.

We had the most wonderful time eating here! Our server, Mehedi, was fantastic! As soon as he came to our table, he asked us if we wanted papadoms and when we didn’t know what they were, he whisked some out for us! He also asked us some of our preferences and surprised us with delicious dishes that matched what we like. All in all, a very fun and tasty meal! We would be back if we didn’t live so far away!

Great find with an interested selection of dishes. One not to miss a visit too, if in the area. Food and service were first class. We were lucky and got a table, but may be better if you can book. It was very busy. Best ever was having a Gluten Free beer to wash it down with. 😊

The hospitality was off the charts. Delloitte the portion sizes in the menu, the staff ensured we got the right portion size for our family. They were very friendly, spoke very cordially, and engaged we had an overall excellent experience. The food was also splendid.

It was a Monday night and we were a table of 20 people. We pre ordered meals for the a few days before. It was quite busy for a Monday. However only 2 people serving which made service slow, meals came out in dribs n drabs.. Saying that the food was gorgious. I had a madras and sometimes different Indian restaurants make them slightly hotter or milder than others... This was spot on.. If visiting the area again will definitely stop off here...

The best Indian food we've ever had anywhere. Very attentive service and some lovely special dishes on the menu and what a great surprise, after travelling in major cities everywhere to have found it in Chipping Camden. We will be visiting again for this dining experience if nothing else!

Disappointing… we ordered 4 different dishes and they all tasted the same. Nothing tasted fresh and the paneer was like rubber. Honestly would not recommend. However, the staff was nice.
