Maenllwyd Inn in Caerphilly

Came here on Sunday for lunch. Not been here for about 2 years so thought we'd give it a try. Both had sunday dinner. The carrots were very hard, roast beef was dry and chewy and the roasties weren't very tasty. The pork roll was absolutely stunning though. Overall was quite disappointed with the meal especially for the price. We opted out of desserts in the end. Also heard the table next to us complain too. Always highly rated this place which was a shame. The staff were nice and the service was good.

Lovely lunch , good service and delicious food . Dog friendly which was great. Served by a delightful young lady called Polly which added to the excellent experience overall .

Lovely country pub with roaring fires and excellent food. I had a salmon special with a sensational white wine and caper sauce and my father in law had a large and tender pork belly dish. These were followed by two of their specials on the dessert list: rose petal panna cotta and pistachio tart. Everything we ate was very tasty and high quality - higher end restaurant standard but (deservedly) higher end cost too. Had to ask three times for water but other than that, can’t fault the place for a lovely long lunch in the middle of a hike!

I’ve always drove past wondering what this place is like and today was definitely not my last time visiting. Every member of staff was friendly, food was out quick and also tasted delicious. Keep it up😀

Very disappointed food was bland and tasteless, the side dish of onion rings were hard like rubber and send back to be replaced with soggy ones! Won't be rushing back

Been here a few times, food is good for a fair price. Unfortunately today, we felt disappointed as the area we were seated in a empty room, and felt squashed into a dark corner with no lighting. We moved ourselves to a table by the window with lots more room. In my view the table we were given would be the table you use when all other tables in the restaurant are in use.

What happened to the mixed grill? It used to be the best mixed grill around. Nice size gammon, steak OK, tiniest bit of chicken and only 1 little sausage. I know it's been a while since I ordered a mixed grill, but where was the rest of the chicken, extra egg, extra sausage and the all important black pudding! Gutted! Won't be ordering that again....

What a nice country pub... friendly and very welcoming staff. First time eating here and the food was delicious! Excellent value for money. Will visit again very soon...definitely recommend!!

Great meal and a reasonable selection

I been here a lot of times love it in summer lovely space to sit outside always go with my friend she goes there a lot more than me ,she does driving always enjoy it .

Lovely old country pub, serving great food, wine & beers. Pleasant staff, good ambience well worth a visit.

The atmosphere is lovely and warm with the essence of cosy. Food wait times are short if you come in on a weekday like we did. We had the ciabatta lunch menu items, my fish Goujon was extremely crispy and delicious with a lovely tartare sauce. Reasonable value for the lunch time menu, have not had the evening menu yet but prices are a bit more from what I’ve seen. Highly recommend for at least lunch.

I didn't have food as I was on a hike and stopped in for a pint. I saw some of the food coming out as I was getting a drink, and it looked lovely to be fair, but i haven't rated it as I didn't eat any. Overall its a lovely pub in a fantastic location for hiking, dog walking, running, exploring etc. Staff were polite. The pint was lovely but a little limited on choice of beers. Great beer garden and plenty of parking

5 of us come out 4 left disappointed I ordered a signature burger which sounds beautiful on menu but was tiny and plain misleading And others ordered steak which was chewy and gristly Service in comparisent to other places was poor Sorry never again

First impression of dinner today was it was like warm to start with. With the plate being cold it didn't get any better. However the quality of the dinner was very good .just temperature spoilt it. Have booked for mother's day and will be requesting hot plates .wish me luck.👍

Visited with my two daughters on a Sunday afternoon! Meals were delicious and the pudding! Staff all amazing and very friendly! Pub is so warm and cosy ! Definitely be back

Been going here since I was a kid with my dad, obviously pop when I was younger. It was a comfortable place with a nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The food was nice but my steak and my wife's prawns were overcooked unfortunately. The desert was lovely but I would have preferred more chocolate sauce to go with the chocolate tourte instead of it being drissled over the plate.

Lovely meal out with family and friends. Good menu, good timing between courses. Friendly staff.

Gorgeous place that we always look forward to popping into after a walk with the dog but we also had a special anniversary there, sans dog, and had a proper sit down meal and it was a beautiful experience. The staff make you feel very welcome and don't rush you.

My wife and I visited on Christmas Eve along with our three children. Having planned a day of festivities for the children we ended up arriving an hour early. I went in to speak to someone and they were more than happy to accommodate, even though they had to move tables and chairs around to fit us in. The order was taken promptly and the food arrived in good time. The food was hot and delicious and it rounded off a very good day and set us up for the big day brilliantly.

Stopped in for breakfast on new year's Eve. Nice full breakfast, sausage sandwich with lovely bread and pancakes were all on our table. All very good.

I have been doing my utmost to forget my last visit to the Maenllwyd, but they keep sending me promotional emails so here is my review. On 23rd December 2021 I visited the Maenllwyd and ordered a 3 course meal. They had run out of the starter which I wanted so I instead chose Korean Chicken, followed by roast turkey, and then a dessert. The Korean Chicken was supposed to be strips of chicken served in a Korean barbecue sauce. What I received was some small, hard tasteless pieces of chicken in breadcrumbs (chicken nuggets) with some sauce. The main course of "hand carved" turkey was also very disappointing. The turkey was dry and tasteless and looked more like it had come out of a packet. The sprouts were cold and rock hard, and the vegetables were all lacking in flavour. By the following day (Christmas Eve) I became very ill and was diagnosed as having food poisoning. This lasted for 3 days and ruined my Christmas. There was nothing else that I had eaten that could have caused the food poisoning so I reported the Maenllwyd to the relevant Environmental Health department. Unfortunately, with it then being between Christmas and the New Year they could not do anything.

Had lunch here today and as usual the food and service was excellent. Thank you Alex. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and with the welcoming log fires the atmosphere was very cosy and relaxing, perfect for a pre Christmas lunch and catch up with good friends.

Always good food hear, bit out of the way but worth the drive

Had to wait nearly 5 minutes to be seated,we were given the menus but wanted ages before the server came to take our orders

Went for a late birthday meal, made use of the voucher they emailed me for a free bottle of wine. Girlfriend had steak, I had the signature burger, both were cooked and presented very nicely. Staff were great, particularly Emily.

Usually the food is lovely this time I found it cold . We arrived at 3.15 so not over busy, service is slow but not an issue, however, when the food arrived all our meals (4) were cold . I ordered from the festive menu 2 courses for what I received definitely not worth it . I could have ordered the same food but without the pickle was the only difference I could see and it would have been approx £6 cheaper ...very disappointing . I will not be returning

Always lovely to find a pub where not only is the food excellent, the countryside relaxing, staff helpful and most importantly there is a dog friendly area. Wonderful treat for us all to end a walk and visit. Dogs excited when they realise our destination. Can’t recommend this hostelry too highly.

This is a really nice pub with an open fire it has a great atmosphere and it's unique there's very few places like this. We went recently had Sunday lunch here and I have to be honest it was really good, the food was cooked to perfection. The staff where really friendly and attentive. It was more than obviously that they take pride in making sure everyone has a pleasurable experience. We are looking forward to going again and would highly recommend anyone to visit.

Another lovely Sunday lunch at this gorgeous country pub. Alex served our family of six at our table and was attentive and helpful as usual . The food and service was superb.

We booked a table for my son’s 36th birthday on Sunday. When we arrived it was very busy 1.45pm we had to wait quite a while to be shown our table. Drinks arrived and food was ordered but that was where it went wrong! My meal came first but the rest of the family (8 of us) had to wait a good ten minutes and we had to ask for my grandson’s lunch. We tried to wait for everyone to get their food but by now my lunch was cold. Again a long wait for condiments and extra gravy the cauliflower cheese I ordered didn’t arrive. Nobody asked us during the meal if everything was ok but when the plates were cleared we told the waitress that none of the meals were hot!!! In fairness minutes later the manager arrived and offered to replace the food but we were finished by then. He offered us free desserts which was kind and my son was treated to a happy birthday cheesecake with a candle which was lovely. The staff were all very nice indeed. However the bill was £145 and in honesty we shouldn’t have been charged for the food or at very least it should have had a percentage off. Unfortunately I’m not a fan of Sunday lunch plated up and covered in gravy, my potatoes were soggy and the gravy was poured all over my food which I hate. Had the food come out with the veg in side dishes that would have been much better. We did all comment on the amount of meat given, not much at all. My son and I had turkey there was one and a half slices my mother in law said the same about her pork. Sadly we all agreed we’d never go back because for £145 we expected a lot more. Waiting staff fab food sadly not.

We've used the Maenllwyd for a number of years but on the last two visits it wasn't as good. The last visit the staff were uncommunicative and surly, Alex the server tried hard but the atmosphere was flat and uncomfortable. The visit prior to this one the steak we had was fatty , grisly and we made a complaint at the time.

Really lovely country inn with great food and a nice atmosphere. Warm and welcoming on a winters night weather it be a romantic twosome or a group gathering

Food fantastic service very poor and felt ignored . We had table for 5 and spent an average of 25 to 35 pound each. Been coming here for few years and never had reason to complain before . Alway different when Mike and Tony in attendance . So disappointed.

We ordered two ribeye steaks and both steaks were cooked well, but the chips were disappointing. When paying around £23 for steak and chips each, it would be expected to have homemade or even just good quality frozen chips, but these reminded me of chips...

We visited here as a family for a catch up. Great menu choice, the food was excellent and exceptional service from everyone.

Nice beer garden to eat in a quiet corner of Wales and the Sunday Roast is nice if you're watching your portion control. Personally I'd have preferred a bigger roast with some appropriate side orders and a couple of the craft beers still on the pumps but nice place to visit if the sunshine is out to play.

Went here for a birthday meal. The food was ok, nothing special which is such a shame because it used to be amazing! Service was lovely, all very quick.

We were visiting the area from Cornwall for the day, what a super place to find.. Food and service excellent and friendly.

The main courses were great, enjoyable and tasty, drinks were nice too and service was fairly efficient. However, the dessert was disappointing; it was supposed to be a sundae but looked like the ingredients had just been chucked into an old glass, like not much care had gone into the making of it. It also took as long to arrive as the main courses, which makes me think they had run out and asked the dishwasher or cleaner to knock one up. So I wouldn't order the sundae again, but I definitely would have the main courses again. Friendly hosts as well, so would go back there.

We did Sunday Dinner, Trio of Meats was excellent, don't know how they do that Pork Scratchings but they were excellent.

Less than impressed. We booked a table for 6:15 , ordered more or less straight away and our "food" arived an hour later. My wife ordered a medium rare sirloin which was tough , chewy and tasteless and I ordered the BBQ Chicken burger. The chicken was a little difficult to identify due to its diminutive size, wasn't especially hot, the onion rings were almost certainly under done to the point of being almost raw and to top it all off I was left with an upset stomach two hours later. We won't be returning.
