Always recieve great service, food is excellent and good value, friendly helpful staff nothing is too much trouble, very large car park which is a bonus.

Went there Xmas Eve all very festive. Setting up for Xmas day. Nice place very friendly 👌. I've not tried the food but definitely give it a go. Seems a nice menu.

The food was awful . Steak was advertised as 10oz but was told it was 8oz, the chips looked and taste like they were from a local chip shop . Burger had a bad taste so kids wouldnt eat and they added extra to my bill for a smaller steak that wasnt aged.... will never return to this place

Such a shame that bar staff ruined our visit here yesterday. The tall, thin barmaid was expressionless and unwelcoming upon our walking into the premises. There was no “good afternoon” or “what can I get you” She just stared at my husband until my husband said “can I get two pints of lager please?” Very awkward indeed 🤦‍♀️ Other bar staff walking around cleaning tables & serving food were the same. Not a smile on their faces….If people don’t like their jobs why do they stay there? What was once was a good, cosy, hospitable pub is long gone

What a lovely experience we had at the pub. We were a large party of 20 with children mixed in. The team at the pub were very accommodating and the food was absolutely fantastic. Thank you all.

The food was lovely, especially the cauliflower cheese. However we waited an hour for it to be served, not ideal, there was no explanation. I understand they were busy, but don't take bookings if you can't deliver the service.

Good Standard menu plus specials were available. I ordered my steak medium but it was well done (didn't complain as we were being taken out). Needs a bigger dessert selection!

Popped in for some food with my wife and daughter and met my brother and mother here. The food was beautiful the staff were really friendly and welcoming, there is a nice menu and reasonably priced dishes. The girls enjoyed a couple of bottles of Malbec. Five people eat with drinks for £115.00. There is a large off-road carpark with disabled bays. I ordered the farmers' plate, and they all had the curry rice n chips half n half. We will be calling again. They have offers on certain nights. 20% off night amongst them. Well, it's worth a visit if you're in the area of caerphilly, tucked away just on the side of caerphilly mountain heading towards Tongwylias, passing the enternce of caerphilly castle.

Haven't been for a few years was always a place to visit on my travels but my last visit I waited at the bar to buy drinks 3 staff came and went not one acknowledged me and said anything to let me know that they would soon return I waited a while and finally gave up obviously they didn't need my money 🤔so decided to go Gwaelo dy Garth where they were more accommodating 😎

We booked for 11 and had 3 extra turn to which the staff easily accommodated and brought all food out at the same time. I can not thank the staff enough for making the evening special for my son and fathers birthday in particular Tarin and Leia who were amazing. We will definitely visit again and will recommend to all our friends and family.....if I could give 6 stars to Tarin and Leia I would. Thank you to all at the Black Cock this evening.

Wonderful food and staff that are very welcoming and accommodating. The Sunday lunch is like home from home and I highly recommend the lamb with extra Yorkshire puds and cauliflower cheese. Beautiful dinner and an empty plate at the end.

The Sunday lunch here was fantastic. All of the lunch was great but especially the meats were delicious, carrots amazing as was the cauliflower cheese. As much gravy as we wanted. Really busy but the waiting staff were really attentive. Will be back and have already recommended to friends.

An oasis! Beautiful peaceful garden, delicious food, very nice staff. Nice play area for kids. A really great pub, I had a very pleasant afternoon there.

Just had lunch here. Breaded mushrooms to start both my wife and myself, badly overcooked. Main, I had Thai fish cakes, overcooked, chips, overcooked. My wife ordered ham, egg and chips, she was served gammon , egg and chips, gammon was dry, tough and overcooked, the chips were overcooked so badly I asked the waitress, why would anyone plate up food that looked so bad to serve to customers. I ate here 3 months ago and the food was super which leaves me to ask who delivers up 4 meals in one sitting that bad. No return I'm afraid.

Decent roadside restaurant. Bar service, not too long a wait. Good value for money. The food isn't too bad but the fries in our meals were undercooked and a little greasy. Burger with peanut butter, very heavy to eat. The setting is quite pretty.

Lovely pub out of town great service friendly staff ample parking

We visited in a rather large group recently to an evening meal. It important to note that no fault can be found with the food, we tried various starters, mains, sides and desserts and they were all incredibly good. If it was just for the food, we’d be back in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the kitchen team are let down heavily by a front of house team that are ultimately quite rude. We overheard chat asking between staff about our table, facial expressions suggested that there were countless other places they’d have rather been and the swearing amongst staff in front of customers leaves something to be desired. It’s a shame really given how good the food is, however, we won’t be in a rush to return.

Came up for Sunday lunch yesterday with a friend and it was absolutely lush. We both had mixed meats, veg was lovely (especially the swede and cauli cheese - to die for!) and plenty of gravy. Can’t get a better dinner anywhere else in Caerphilly. Very reasonably priced. Front of house staff couldn’t do enough for us. Thanks again will be back!!

Lovely little pub to stop in for food. They stop serving at 2.30 then kitchen is open again in the evening I’m presuming. The food option were varied, up to date & really delicious food. Would return and recommend

A busy bank holiday but the staff coped will with the masses. Food ...steak and ale pie with cheesy mash was very good.

Turned up to have a meal. Restaurant had 3 tables full. Told. No walk in bookings. So we took our business elsewhere. Not a great business model in this climate!!

From Birmingham to Cardiff to see Bruce Called in here as my husband has eaten with you before and recommended the food. Despite being busy staff made space for us and it was the best roast beef I've had in a long time. Thankyou to everyone involved in making our visit great. 🙏

Just had a very tasty Beef Sunday roast here and I couldn’t fault anything about it. Everything was cooked to perfection and the gravy was so tasty too. Had a strawberry cheesecake for desert which was also delicious. The service was excellent and everyone was really friendly. Think this is my new favourite place for a Sunday roast 🤤. Highly recommended!

Lovely cosy pub with a funny name

Booked in a large group for my Mothers birthday, nice food and great service, staff were very helpful.

Updating my review after visiting again recently, friendly staff, food was excellent, great portions.

first off mothers day menu changed without warning which shouldnt be allowed the roast was bland turkey was bland and tasted watered down brisket tasted over cooked and watered down like these 2 meats was left ages and moisture to them the chicken was dry and bland only the was nice and had flavour was the chicken skin, carrots, roasties and gravy and best thing was dessert also diapointed that no normal coke on tap only over priced bottles so ended up paying over priced for a bottle of cider at £5.05 i was shocked when i seen that price on bill also hair was on 1 on the cheese cakes which they replaced and gave it for free last time tub to take food home was greasy and dirty it had like dirty water or something in them

Popped in here with our little lab puppy after a nice forest walk - most loveliest pub I have ever been to! Everyone was so welcoming, service was incredible and the food was really nice. We are definitely coming back again!!

Absolutely lush, me and my boyfriend visited castle coch and had lunch/early dinner at the inn after, we had the haddock/chips and chicken/cranberry burger followed by cheesecake and the best sticky toffee pudding ever. They were very busy but worked as a great team and their manager could not do enough for us or the people around us. Great beer, great service, great food and atmosphere. They even gave us a free beer from another customer changing their mind! 10/10 would recomend.

Wonderful dinner on Sunday. The mashed swede and cabbage are gorgeous and the meat was cooked to perfection. I hadn't had a Sunday lunch here for years before Covid. I will be returning very soon. Staff were fab considering how busy it was. I would recommend booking 😉

We booked for 3pm for a Sunday roast. The dinner was fantastic especially the veg we had mashed swede and cabbage which is my absolute favorite also peas and carrots(note to staff,please keep the swede and cabbage it's gorgeous)I had mixed meats and all the meats were cooked to perfection. Beautiful gravy. We will definitely be back ❤

Lovely pub, stopped at after a good walk. The food was great and the beer.

We were passing a couple of weekends ago and decided to call in for drinks. The pub was very busy with most tables occupied by diners. Firstly, having ordered my drink, the barman nearly dropped my pint all over me, catching the top of a tap when handing it to me, some of which did land on my coat. Whilst he did apologise, for some reason he also found it slightly amusing... Secondly, we managed to find a large table close by the entrance door and sat down to enjoy our drinks. Some 15 minutes later a waitress approached us to say the table was reserved and asked us to move. There was nothing on the table to say the table was reserved and our only option was to sit by the empty fireplace, sitting upon seats that had been climbed upon by a couple of little darlings, whose parents did absolutely nothing to stop them, neither did any of the staff. The people occupying our table were embarrassed and apologised for us having to move but it wasn't heir fault, staff should have reserved the table in the normal way. We drank up and left, this being the second poor experience we have had at this pub. The owner behaves as if she is doing you the favour by serving you. The staff are rushed-off their feet catering to eaters and, frankly, if you just want drinks you are treated almost like lepers! This used to be a traditional pub, in which you had a friendly greeting, a welcoming fire after a walk, walkers with well-behaved dogs and a great selection of ales in a convivial atmosphere. However, this has been replaced by a surly attitude, cold uninviting atmosphere, little room to enjoy a traditional pint and kids treating the area as a playground with parents allowing them to run amok. Far too many pubs are going this way and concentrating more on the dining side rather than what a pub should be known for. There are nicer places to drink in and I think some of the replies from the owner mirror this. Won't be affording them the benefit of the doubt next time and will take our custom elsewhere, two poor experiences is more than enough.

Decent pub meal and draught Guinness to die for.

If you haven’t tried it then you should! It’s a comfortable country pub setting. The Sunday lunch here is stunning. A great selection of freshly cooked vegetables, tasty freshly roasted meat and equally tasty roast parsnip and crispy roast potatoes. Comes with a generous helping of meat gravy, home made Yorkshire pudding and meat stuffing. The cauliflower cheese dish is well worth it too. The service is lovely, staff are friendly and very helpful. We had the grandchildren with us and nothing was too much trouble. Children’s menu and other dishes available if you want them. Good variety of drinks and real ale. Dogs are welcome in the bar area. Well worth a visit, certainly one of our favourites, book in advance to ensure you get in!

Absolutely delicious Sunday roast and a great dessert. Super dog friendly pub which is a great spot to stop on a Sunday dog walk. Will be returning soon.

Lovely friendly staff and very welcoming. It was also nice and warm on a cold evening trying to find somewhere new to eat. Dishes were substantial however the menu is quite limited.

Up a narrow mountain road on Caerphilly Mountain through damp dreary weather to this popular JL pub, lucky that we booked ahead! The curry of the day (chicken), was excellent, butcher' faggots properly meaty, and the beer and wine top notch. Service was pleasant and efficient, value for money good,and the manager remembered our hosts, who had only visited a couple of times inthe last two years. Certainly on this occasion, top marks!

Hi I never write reviews but the food was absolutely lovely even if it was American burger x2 ,probably the best I’ve had .Also the staff were fantastic as well 👍👍

I had the lamb shank with mash, peas and beef dripping gravey, Mam had scampi and chips while my wife had festive burger. All the food was cooked to perfection and the service impeccable. Highly recommended pub for great service, atmosphere and food.

Don’t bother. Every time we have attempted to eat here we have had to deal with surly staff. No deviating from a set menu even for dietary requirements, waiting ages for bog standard food, no understanding if booking numbers alter, even after paying deposit… Never again.

Great food, 10 person party all enjoyed the meal when it eventually arrived busy day I guess so 45 minute wait after ordering, food was fresh, tasty and good portions, super pint of beer also 😊 Will definitely visit again next time I'm in Cardiff 👍🏻

Lovely country pub with lovely food

Had a very nice meal here earlier today. Only noticed the ribs on the specials board when going up to order food. They were very nice, the only downside was they could have done with a steak knife and bigger plate.

Never been here before but I will definitely go again. Popped in with my husband and our friend hoping to get a warm bowl of soup. We were served a bowl of the best soup I've had in a long time. It was absolutely delicious and served with a good chunk of warm and crusty bread. The service was fast and friendly and the pub was lovely and warm. I highly recommend this pub.

Excellent lunchtime food and service. Five of us, all were very happy with the quality and taste of the dishes. We never understand why few places though don't seem to serve much veg.

We arrived at the Black Cock Inn, my girlfriend and I , at midday. We never booked a table so just turned up which was no problem, we just got shown to a table. My girlfriend ordered the lasagne and I ordered the curry of the day. We did not wait long for our meals to arrive. The portions were perfect, not too small and not too big. We both enjoyed the meal which were tasty, and did feel like they were freshly cooked. Gina our waitress who was also serving behind the bar, was exceptional very friendly and helpful. She always checked we were ok with the meal and made sure we were happy. We were so happy with the service, we did leave a tip, and would return again. Thank you.

Haven't been there for a few years we had Sunday roast. 2 brisket beef 2 turkey all 4 absolutely beautiful, yorkies spot on. Our 2 teenagers had desert, waffle and sticky toffee pudding both said was lovely. 10 out of 10 won't be leaving it a few years again!!!

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch and very friendly staff. Loved it 10/10. My daughter and I booked a table in the bar as the restaurant was fully booked. Surpassed expectations with food and service. Never disappointed with this place. Roast dinners are so popular and there's a reason for that - absolutely delicious. Service friendly and efficient, excellent value for money. Would recommend.

Spent a pleasant evening with family here last Saturday, food was ok but nothing special. When leaving we were accused of not paying our bill and made to feel dishonest. Staff were rude, and unwilling to apologise once receipts were shown for our paid bills. Side orders and sauces were paid for, but not served to the table. No refund offered. The whole situation was completely embarrassing and uncomfortable! Will not be returning, or recommending this place to anyone.

Excellent pub and easy to get to , lovely old country pub what more could you wish for. Staff even came outside to offer my dogs biscuits "I was left out" .

Walked in with no reservation, fully booked inside but made some room for us outside. Their hot chips are the best.

Definitely wouldn't recommend on a Sunday (we have been previously a while back and it was fine but today was terrible). We booked a table for 3pm on a Sunday, arrived just before 3-it was busy but there were seemingly a fair few staff and we were seated fairly quickly after a bit of table cleaning. We waited until around 3.20 before we had to prompt them to give us a menu. They eventually took our order around 3.45 and it didn't arrive until well gone 4.30. Basically 1.5 hours from arriving to getting food! If we hadn't put our card against the booking we would have left. To top it off, instead of serving me my ordered potato and leek soup, they served me up a bacon and cheese sauce in a soup dish- I refused it as I'm vegetarian. To be fair to them they comped our starters and one of the main courses but there was zero apology or acknowledgement of the their service being well below par. People were seated after us and ate two courses before we had even had our food! Terrible.

Decent home cooked food. Never had a bad meal. Best Sunday dinner I’ve had and I’ve had a few! Service can be a bit slow sometimes (due to busyness) but always pleasant staff.

We were seated immediately with no fuss and had our drinks quickly thereafter. The food was also beautiful and served quickly. There was an incident where two rowdy males tried to ignite a situation with me and another guest with me. We didn't even need to complain, before we were even able to, the problem was handled and the rowdy guys were asked to drink up and leave. It was the first time anywhere that the staff stepped in without being asked to. It was really comforting. Also got to cuddle a staff members sausage dogs so that was great. 10/10 staff and service.

An incredible pub. Though I strongly recommend you book a table in advance. Dogs are welcomed. The food is wonderful. Beef brisket we had.. superb. Staff attentive, be warned busy, so be patient and politeness to the Staff doesn't cost anything!!!
