Maenllwyd Inn in Caerphilly

A beautiful old inn with lovely food. The waitress was lovely and did check on our party several times despite another review saying that this was not the case. The wait between meals was a little long but absolutely not the end of the world. The pies we had were huge and tasty. I’d definitely come here again (in the day so I can appreciate the surroundings) and would recommend it

My wife and daughter took me there yesterday for a 70th birthday treat, really bad, 1st table right next to the front door and very draughty, got moved to another table, table NOT CLEANED still had food crumbs on it, wet ring stains from glasses, dirty cutlery, ceiling light out ended up using the torch on my phone to read the menu. I ordered and coke it came with lime slice in it and loads of ice, I was not asked if I wanted them Ordered the food just under a hour later it arrived. Chicken in a sauce with chips, small metal dish with chicken in it and covered with cucumber, chicken looked like it had been sitting around for ages and a old bird as really really hard to try and cut also very small portion with a few chips. Could not eat the chicken as so tough, no staff to be seen to get it sorted out Desert apple pie and ice cream, soggy outside of the pie,apples sour. The Lady who served us was only seen when we had finished main meal and came for dessert order, she was told about the main meal and didn't do anything. From the time of sitting down at the 2nd table until we left we did not have any member of staff come and ask if everything was okay. We only saw staff when they brought the food, which took nearly a hour from starter finish to main meal arrived. My whole evening was really spoilt as I said it was a treat for my 70th birthday and it was totally spoilt. Rest assured I will not recommend this place

Lovely food, and the lady who looked after us was fab, helped us move tables due to my mum's mobility issues. Will visit again

Really enjoyable Sunday Roast, we had Rib of Beef and Chicken, the portion sizes were fantastic and it tasted excellent, the beef literally falls away. Service top notch as always from Maenllwyd. Pooch came with us too!

Very busy when we arrived but welcomed and seated at table quickly by friendly member of staff and provided with menus and took drinks order. Drinks arrived promptly. Soon followed up by taking food order and food duly arrived in timely manner. We were checked on by staff during meal and bill was provided by staff and paid promptly. Food nicely cooked and decent quality. I had mixed grill, partner had gammon. Gammon was excessively salty on both meals. I felt the mixed grill was poor value for money compared to other pub chains. Drinks were excessively expensive.

Poor meal. 2 mushrooms on a piece of bread with cold garlic sauce. 2main meals £24 for a lamb shank & some cabbage. Chicken duo was dry and basic. Refused 2 main for.£20 offer. Total bill £62.01, very poor meals. Service wasn't good at all. Won't be going there again

Was just lovely. Celebrating mine and my husbands birthday with our children, my parents and our puppy. Staff were amazing, food was phenomenal and the atmosphere was just perfect. We love coming here when we get chance to.

We visited New Years Day very busy, staff very cheerful, attentive and helpful which they always are when we have made previous visits. Very festively decorated and a good atmosphere. Food excellent!! clean plates everytime!!! Chefs must have been exceptionally busy but food delivered without a long wait. Presentation and quality of food excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit not our first one would recommend. Well done Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you.

Came here for lunch after a walk. We booked a table and was sat earlier than expected which was good. The waiter we had was quite intense, waited about 15 minutes for her to take our order, started and then excused herself and then started to take order of another table? My 10 year old neice had a little stone in her broccoli, told the waiter this but her tone was accusatory. I told her I was just letting her know to inform the kitchen. She said she would take it off the bill but I was still charged full price. The lamb shank cottage pie and beef cheeks were good, although the accompanying vegetables were a bit sad and overboiled.

A special birthday meal for 13 of us aged from 3 - 70 plus 1 dog on 29th Dec 2024. The booking was easy and we were seated in the conservatory. A lovely welcome and a very nice and varied menu. 4 of our group are gluten free and 1 vegetarian all of whom were catered for with ease. Many of us had a roast dinner provided with generous portions. The children were enabled to have any adult dinner in small portions but there were more specific items if needed. One of our party is a real aler and declared the beer fantastic and very well kept. The table service was excellent. Being such a large group our needs were quite varied and with the children and a dog we were quite noisy at times but this was all taken with grace and friendliness. The bathroom facilities were clean and warm. However, I wasn't sure how well a wheelchair user could be accommodated. The pub entrance is cosy but narrow and the parking surface quite gravelly and uneven. The pub is easily contacted should you need to check this out. We went at a very busy time but the staff seemed very able and efficient. The bill for 13 with 2 courses plus drinks and our gratuity amounted to £30 pp. Excellent value and would definitely go again and very happy to recommend.

Came with family for Boxing Day lunch. The pub itself is cosy & comfortable with original fireplaces & beams & also modern features. The service was great & the staff were working so hard. The food was great; we ordered from the festive menu & everyone felt the food was super; high quality & well cooked. This was our first visit & we’ll definitely be back to try the normal menu & experience the cosy atmosphere again.

The Maenllywyd Inn is a lovely food pub just out side of Caerphilly. Friendly service, nice food, dogs welcome in the bar and the largish outside area. Good pint of Guinness served here too. Worth a visit for decent pub food and a warm welcome.

We had the most fabulous Christmas lunch today. The food was stunning. The service was perfect. What a lovely atmosphere. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and were very impressed with the food. We’ll definitely be visiting again. Thank you so much for a lovely meal!

Beautifully decorated for Christmas throughout. Very busy when we arrived. Pricing is a little on the expensive side for drinks. Small car park to the rear of the building, with an overflow car park just across the road. Dog friendly, even has a little dog stop inside, with water, treats, etc. Gentleman at the bar (with the glasses) was very professional and friendly, gave us a pot of tea instead of 2 single teas, which i was grateful for. I felt they should make you aware of where you can sit when you're only having drinks. I entered and said to the gentleman waiting to sit people for dinner, we were only here for drinks at the moment, which he said wasn't a problem, and we made our way to the bar. I asked for a drinks menu and then found a table to look over the menu. I was then told by the gentleman who was sitting people for dinner that we couldn't sit at the table and had to stand at the bar. I didn't make a fuss, but being pregnant and considering there was no seating at the bar, as well as the gentleman never told us where we could sit instead, I thought this was a bit unprofessional. I was then left to ask the bar tender where we could sit with drinks, to which he had to go and ask another employee? Although the bartender was very helpful, I think seating should be made clear when you enter the premises. Other than that, it was a lovely visit, and I will be back to try the menu.

I haven’t been here for years but was not disappointed from my last visit years ago. The staff and management were very attentive and the food was outstanding. We will Definitely visit again and will not leave it so long next time .

The food needs taking up a notch ! Very basic pub grub with no much to get excited about. I ordered the beef and ale pie and for 17 £ you would expect a half decent pie but the meat tasted cheap and all so s lack of it with a huge crust to fool you into thinking it was a real pie . A can’t pub with good service but you can’t get excited about the lacklustre menu .

I came here with my partner for lunch and was so glad that we did, the welcome from Alex was wonderful and she was so friendly. I had the Lamb Shank Shepherd's Pie and it was quite honestly the best shepherd's pie that I have ever eaten. My partner had a 4oz Rump Steak Sandwich which she really loved. Moral of this story is that... we will return!

Same points to make as many other reviewers. I,ve been coming here for years. Unfortunately since becoming a chain pub the price and quality of food are going in opposite directions. Wait times are hideous for genuinely dire food. I,ll not be back. Also greene king say they,ll use this feedback to improve but don,t, as they,ve said that for years and its still dire. Really disappointed in the lack of effort here.

Had the pleasure of calling in earlier today with a friend, we both had a fabulous meals the service was exceptional everyone was kind and inviting we are going again for sure.

This is a go to spot for me and my best friend. We are late twenties and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere for a friendly catch up with a pint and food. The food is always perfect and there is a great variety on the menu! Have previously visited for the Sunday roast which was also lovely. The staff are always attentive and friendly and you are checked in and out in a timely manner. Thank you for yet another lovely meal!

Expensive! For an average pub food and drinks is very expensive. We live locally we like this pub, and pay a visit in a regular basis, but sorry food very average with portions size poor. We give it a miss for the near future….

Been here a few times and each time doesn't disappoint. Apologies about no pics , but the place is beautiful and immaculately kept . It was so good that we had to go twice the week we found this place! We've been for the main menu and for the roast dinner. Great food, friendly staff (could be a little more attentive) and will be introducing this place to our friends and family! They’ve taken dog friendly to a different level, providing dog bowls, treats and blankets. Would highly recommend this place!

Sunday 6pm 13/10/2024 I've been here a few times. This place used to be great and the food used to be lovely. I am not sure if there is new ownership or if we just suffered a very bad day of service but all of the tables mains were horrendous. Every roast dinner was luke warm at best. The roast potatoes were hard? They keep forgetting our sides and veg. Then decided to squish all our individual veg sides in one small bowl. The pigs in blanket were very salty. The veg was bland mush. The garlic bread that came with the kids meal was like a rock. Even the adults at the table tried to eat the garlic bread but couldn't. You serving bricks to kids now? Are we supposed to wait for ages for our food and tell you that everything was awful and wait for it to be recooked while we're already hungry. Asked for a drinks menu. Server said drinks menu is outdated so we don't get a menu. We order our drinks and find out afterwards they are extremely over priced. Also the food menus were dirty? This place has gone to the dogs. We will never come back here again. 250 pound spent on a meal that is on par with a bad wetherspoons. Additionally I had a bad stomach by the time I left. Wouldn't be surprised if the food wasn't safe to eat. Before the owner replies saying to come again. The answer is not a chance. Unless you're coming our entire meal there is no way we're wasting 250 quid on this crap again.

I absolutely love this place. Been here many times and it's always been a positive experience. We visited today and had the new lamb shank shepherds pie, cumberland sausage and mash, fish and chips and gammon. Everybody enjoyed their meals. There is one lady who has been here many years and her customer service is second to none. Lovely ambience especially when they put the fires on in the winter. Parking is fine, plenty of spaces in the overflow carpark just up from the pub.

Food fairly standard for this sort of pub. Service awful. Very young untrained waiters who paid no attention to the table other than to deliver the food. Waited ages for desserts and then had to send one of them back as the order was wrong. Won’t be going back

Beautiful old pub with a classic selection of food and drink. Food was tasty and with Generous portions. Was busy so I recommend booking if visiting during peek time.

Efficient service and attentive staff. Food good quality for one of the restaurant chain locations. Menu bolstered by seasonal specials. Have gone to the Maenllwydd many times over the years and food quality has been variable. It is good presently. Clean plates speak volumes. Not the best of atmosphere in the restaurant, but creation of such takes time, and is difficult where prompt throughput is the main theme of the business. Visit aided by Blue Light Card discount on 999 Day, Will certainly be back.

Was very disappointing food was not up to the usual standard. Waitress took full drinks away while phones were on the table. One of the party couldn't eat his steak, I had a cooked dinner wasn't very good. Definitely won't be going back.

Haven't been here for over a year. Pub just as quaint and beautiful surroundings. Service good and what I had to eat was lovely (pork belly). However my partner had the steak and ale pie and I'd say it wasn't hone cooked. Too much pastry and filling a bit tasteless. I'm disappointed with it to be fair. With a visit to judge for yourself

Turned up without a booking and welcomed in. Service great and food from the specials board was excellent. A nice bottle of French red to set things off and a lovely evening was had by all. Will be back again for sure !

We visited over the bank holiday weekend and really enjoyed our meal. The staff were lovely and Kate made sure we had everything we needed!

Fantastic. Turned up without a booking and welcomed warmly. Chateau Neuf was great and then there there was the food.... Salmon, lamb (medium rare) a pie and the Halibut. All good. Service was perfect (thank you) and very happy. Out of the way Pub, so not your high street clientele for sure..

Had a lovely time at the Maenllwyd, went for my husbands birthday with my mother in law and 4 year old daughter. They were very patient with us and helpful. Seren our waitress was so friendly. Our food was lovely! The puddings are incredible 😋. Will definitely be back.

Over all area pub, food the area lovely but looks could kill when myself and friend walked in by the bar waiting staff. I was made to feel really uncomfortable.

The meal I had was the nicest I think I've ever had on a meal out.

Great for a walk and drink. Food looks great but we did not eat this time. Excellent beer garden and dogs most welcome. Free water and bowls so a winner for us. Diolch yn fawr. 🙌

We went for our 44th wedding anniversary the food was amazing my Husband loved his steak . Alex and all the staff were very polite and helpful we were even given a glass off wine free to celebrate .highly recommend

Had Sunday lunch. Food underwhelming. Service was great and it’s a lovely atmospheric country pub.

Yesterday my daughter, husband and myself visited for breakfast. We had two dogs, Stuey who was 5 last week and my Charlie who was celebrating his 4th birthday yesterday. We sat outside and our host welcomed the dogs. We ordered drinks and some toast for the dogs A few minutes later two tubs of doggy ice-creams with lit birthday candles arrive with a host who sang Happy Birthday to each of them. We ordered 3 different breakfasts, porridge and poached eggs on toast, one full english and one smashed avocado and eggs on toast. The breakfasts were superb, each perfectly cooked with quality ingredients. Whilst Stuey and Charlie paid attention to their toast, we enjoyed our breakfast in relaxed atmosphere, with attentive service. We ordered extra top-ups on the drinks and a plate of biscuits and snacks were brought for our canines...this was not billed. .We have visited this pub many times for evening meals but this was our first breakfast. We cannot fault it. This pub is situated in a lovely quiet country location which was perfect for a doggy walk afterwards. We absolutely love it. Well done guys. We'll be back. After looking on google maps for somewhere nice to eat. We chose Maenllwyd Inn. We 100% were not disappointed. The food was amazing and the service was understanding. The staff could not do enough for us. Made to feel very welcome and would most definitely return. Very cosy inside and even some little treats for any dogs how visit also. Great choose of drinks and something to suit everyone on the menu.
