Sunday dinner was 10/10, it was so tasty. All of the elements of the meal were cooked perfectly . There was lots of variety on the plate and the portions were generous. We were a table of seven with seven empty plates at the end. We were full but didn't want to miss out on dessert so we had dessert in a to go box which was a lovely treat. We absolutely recommend The Angel in Maesycwmmer.

Called in for Sunday lunch with my wife and 92 year old mother-in-law very friendly staff couldn't be nicer and very polite food was amazing well worth the visit we will be calling in again soon

Horrendous Christmas Day dinner. Owners took advantage of the day by charging £50 per head, overbooked the restaurant and served up something revolting. Clearly staffing issues also as mains arrived 2 hours late. No offer of an apology or discount. We all feel completley swindled by these new owners. Visit this place at your peril!!

I hadn’t eaten here before but was recommended by my mother who lives in the village. We came down in December and had a variety of meals. I had the chicken wings which were really tasty and my family had the garlic mushrooms which was amazing and the halumi fries. For mains I had the steak and ale pie which was agsin really good and a homemade cheese cake for desert. So often pub food can be pre-made microwaved food and I begrudge paying for it but the new owners say that the food is home made and you could tell that from the taste. Very much enjoyed and will be going back next time I’m home

Arrived off the hoof for a drink and ended up staying for a meal. Friendly seevice and more vegetarian options than on the menu (we asked after finding out there was no veggie lasagna). One vegetarian no chicken Kiev and a steak and ale pie later and we were 2 very full and very happy customers! Service was spot on and the price was very reasonable! We even booked in for Sunday lunch!

Never going there again threw up all way home , got food poisoning.

Amazing food, well presented, staff were friendly and very helpful, best Sunday lunch I've ever had, the food was fresh and very tasty, great atmosphere, most of the customer seemed to know each other, I will definitely be returning, the Christmas Day menu is very traditional.

Never been before but no worries 👍 great service happy atmosphere staff very helpful , food excellent .We had Sunday Roast choice of 3 meats 🍖 ànd roast potatoes + boiled or cheesy mash. Completed with fresh vegetables and gravy . If you get through that there is a desert 🏜 menu to finish .

Just (3 days ago) reopened under new ownership. We went to celebrate a friend’s birthday and had a fablas visit. Good value and range of beers etc, and they gave us a mahoosive, free board of cheese and meats with trimmings. Super friendly and welcoming. From the station (Hengoed) it’s a five minute walk across a viaduct with magnificent views. Win-win all round.

The owner is quite eccentric but that just adds to the charm of this place. He's very welcoming and accomodating. The food is so cheap and is so delicious! This is now my local and go here whenever I can.

What a really nice place I've been there for dinner and as the people are soare really friendly it's a really nice place to go to kids are welcome all I've add is a really nice chilled out time i do think what a place to go to is this is such a nice place thanks for the day really add a lovely time

Booked a table for 8pm tonight, was greeted and given a table by the chef, this guy is a fantastic character and a truely decent guy. Then the food arrived... 10 out of 10 couldn't fault it in the slightest, would recommend to anyone and will certainly be returning!

What a lovely little pub/ restaurant the staff are amazing and always welcoming the food is just amazing and there picnic benches are the best and they were very accommodating as we had a vegan a vegetarian and some didnt like this and others couldn't eat this and nothing was ever to much trouble for them. There Sunday dinner are just the best and now my mam and dad go every Sunday unless away couldnt recommend this pub enough go and try u sure will enjoy and wont be disappointed

We had a groupon deal and after reading some of the reviews on here we were very skeptical. We needn’t have worried. We had a very enjoyable Sunday lunch. The owner/manager has such a quirky personality. I can see how some people may think he is being rude but it’s just banter. Once we were shown to our table we found him to be really funny and he added to our pleasurable experience. We had two courses and a glass of wine each for our offer. He happily swapped the wine for soft drinks and lager. Our lunches were extremely tasty. We didn’t have huge portions but what we had was more than enough for a healthy appetite. We had four clean plates, four full bellies and an enjoyable afternoon. We will go back

First time to visit here and they were extremely busy. We arrived a little early for our booking and were asked to go into the Bar area whilst waiting for a table in the restaurant. We were seated at the booking time but had been unable to purchase a drink as they seemed short staffed and were too busy to serve drinks at the bar. The Beef dinner was very enjoyable but the dessert to follow was only a choice of 2 items.

The Sunday dinner here is immense! I'm very very fussy about Sunday dinner and HATE it when the roast potatoes are cooked frozen ones, the veg isn't fresh and they use bisto gravy......but this place!!! Roast potatoes cooked in the meat juices Fresh vegetables cooked to perfection A choice of 3 stunningly cooked meats AND.......fresh homemade gravy made from the meat juices. Absolutely incredible! And if you've got room for dessert (if you haven't they'll box a piece up for you to take home) they are amazing too! Worth a visit..... and for £9.45 for 2 courses isn't going to break the bank either!

Went to the Angel Inn today 26/1/20 for Sunday lunch,. When we arrived for our booking, the place was very busy, we were greeted by Mike the Landlord, who was very friendly and welcoming, as we were early, we were shown to the bar area. This area was a mix of diners and regulars, not sort big charectors in there fair play 😁 When our table was ready we were shown to the restaurant area, a lovely clean, homely area. All serving staff we friendly and polite. When the food arrived,must it was lovely and hot, plenty of meat, vegetables and delicious gravy! I must say it was the nicest Sunday lunch we've had out for a long time, and we are Sunday lunch conisours! Thank you so much Mike and team

Remember 2 ring them your on line booking is provisional. Great steak with homemade chips & Mike swapped the wine 4 pints of lager👍 all food homemade & good. Nice cosy pub. Service is quite hectic but funny.

i bought Groupon vouchers and used one today. I booked the table for 3pm as was informed that Groupon customers couldnt eat earlier. When i arrived, i was rudely told to wait in the bar with the other Groupon users. And wait we did.......1 hour 20 mins, sat in the bar. I complained several times, telling the owner that we had visitors coming shortly. Whilst waiting, people entered the bar area with Tesco bags with more veg as they had run out of food.....The owner offered no apology, just blamed Groupon for over booking. After being seated and our order taken, i spoke to other people who had been waiting over an hour at their table and still didnt have a drink. The food? well it was appalling. chicken was shredded, probably because it looked more and was dry. The mash was lumpy and just two small spoon fulls. Peas were hard and the carrots had been cut to tiny pieces to help them cook quicker. It wasnt worth £2 never mind the £6 per person i paid. When it was time for desert, i had to ask 3 times for our deserts then was finally told that they only had fudge cake left. I asked for ours to be taken home as we had been there two hours by this time and our visitors were due. What an utter shambles of a place. I will never go there again. What i will do with the other voucher i purchased, i have no idea. The owner is rude and i felt intimidated when i complained about the wait. I was expecting him to tell me to f... off

Goupon meal !!!Sunday lunch meat not worth having cut so thin scraps as the other reviews say is more than true not the cleanest of places tbh and the staff have not got a clue what thay are doing the bar man is something eles and not in a good way stay away !!!!!!

Drive psst this place almost daily so decided to give it a go. We went on Wednesday night which is curry night, had a choice of seating as we were the only customers there. Very pleasant dining area, spotlessly clean and fresh. The barman/waiter was a very friendly young man and made us feel very welcome. We had beef madras and a chicken balti with a soft drink each. The food was very nice, big chunks of beef in the maddrass and a generous helping. Lovely home made chips. All in all a great meal. We will return on another day as for what we had it was an absolute bargain at 20 all in. To sum up good quality food, nice peaceful atmosphere. A hidden gem.

Really disappointed with our Sunday lunch. Not sure if the barman knows what's going on!! Food mush. Scraps of meat. Shredded. Not one whole slice of meat between us. Two small dollops of mash, teaspoon of mushed carrots, 1 frozen yourkshire, 3 overcooked sprouts. That was our dinner!! Apple tart and custard cold. Disgrace. Won't be returning

Used to like going here but never again. They make it clear that they want their customers to be poorer, with no human rights. They don't want their staff to have workers rights. Just stick to food and drinks

Have been for Sunday lunch and evening meal. Food fabulous, service spot on and excellent prices. Tried The Angel after a couple of reasonable meals and a dreadful one at Marstons The Otter.Glad we found the Angel Inn.

Wow !!!!! Just wow!!!! The meat was cut so fine I thought I was on cut backs in the war the manager looked dirty !!!! Just wow I have no words will not be back !!!! Home made apple.pie dont think so cosco again !!!

Lovely welcome as we are discovering the families Welsh history..so 10 of us descended , but great hospitality a real Welsh welcome thank you..

Went to The Angel on the 28th of March with my family for my sister's Diamond Anniversary.

Visited the angel twice now and on both occasions have been very impressed with the customer service especially the lovely waitress Vicky who looked after us with compassion and grace.

Great food and amazing service, just take it with a pinch of salt

Didn't have a single thing I wanted to order available... We had booked and they acted like we walked in unannounced. They kept telling us "you can't expect us to have things if you're last in" it was 3PM on a Sunday and we had booked

Baby shower!!!! This is the best afternoon tea I ever had the cakes are fantastic!!!! This place has really changed since the last time we was here !!!! Nothing was to much trouble for the lady she made it a special day for us and her cakes again are really something special the landlord also was pleasant and went out his way for us to create a perfect day

The Food we had was good. They need a bar maid in addition to the chef though. The chef has a wicked sense of humour and to be fair he needs it to do the cooking and serving the bar. lol

What a lovely day on 30th April 2019 for my friends 60th birthday the pinic bench was amazing and well worth the money we wasnt a easy group having a vegan a vegetarian one that dont like anything on a bone one that dont like some of the foods that came with the bench but nothing was to much trouble for the lady and she was working on her own as other staff was sick and she couldnt of done more for us will definitely recommend the angel and I will be back the food was very very hot and was lovely and the cakes were just amazing and all homemade to so thanks for a fantastic service and a fantastic morning/afternoon that's just the deserts forgot to take a pic of all the food we had on there aswel.

First visit to he Angel for Sunday lunch and service and food very good and new makeover is very nice. Only complaint is that the Manager (owner?) is very loud and bit over familiar. Having said that we were made very welcome and we're given a handshake when leaving. Some background music would have been nice rather than having to hear everyone else's conversations etc. Good home cooked food though and plenty of it, great value as only £9.95 for two courses and desserts were fab!

We came here for a friend's birthday surprise, the food was lovely but my food didn't turn up because they had forgotten it, so I ate on my own as everyone else had already finished their food, but I must say the young man who dealt with it was very apologetic.

Visited this evening with the kids, nice welcome, food was tasty, good ingredients cooked well, all 3 of us enjoyed it

Lovely friendly restaurant.cheap for a family as kids eat free. Had the vegetarian curry twice now and it's the best curry I've ever had!! my wife had the phall curry and hunters chicken and was amazed how nice they both was. Staff are friendly and great with kids.

Went to the Angel today after winning a competition i entered for two people to try the picnic benches they have recently started doing. My friend and i were very impressed, the service was excellent, the food both savoury and sweet was lovely. I would highly recommend this to people .

Best curry I’ve had in any local pub.

A set Sunday lunch of roast and dessert is served really quickly and is great value. Very much like a home cooked meal with plenty of veg and gravy!

Popped in after reading a TripAdvisor review and was really pleased we did. Quite a simple choice; 2 course set menu, 3 meat choice (you can have1,2 or all) and a choice of 2 deserts. Owners a really friendly and the staff were as lovely - to a person. The landlady is welcoming and personal, and main man is loud and direct to his locals but in a pleasant way and we loved the whole vib of the place. The roast was plentiful and tasty with all the trimmings, stuffing-Yorkshire puds-roasties, and an extra bowl of 3 more veg. A lovely big bowl of gravy tops it off. Both deserts were super tasty with a cracking custard and tasty options. Great VFM, they know their regulars in Side out, but gave a great welcome to us new customers and a feeling when we left that we were 'regulars'. The whole experience was enjoyable and we will be returning.

Ok firstly a 2 course lunch is just £9.49 choice of three meats or all three, loads of veg including stuffing Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato, roast potatoes, peas, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower. Too much really. Plenty of gravy all nice and hot.

First time there for a meal and we weren’t disappointed. Good choice of food for Sunday Lunch with excellent service and attention to detail. Staff very attentive and brought extra veg portions with no problems. Will go back when they complete the new extension. Thanks.

Went for a curry on a Wednesday evening, as this is the pub / restaurants curry night, (7pm - 9pm) where there is a choice of approx 10 curries, varying meat and strength options. Served with home made chunky chips, rice, or half and half and warm Naan bread. Came with a choice of drink, i opted for a can of larger (Carling) all for £7.50.

Friendly staff, cheap food. Uncomfortable sitting to small round tables. Sunday lunch was OK. Long wait between courses and for items such as gravy etc. The tip of the iceberg was not taking card payments!!! Shop across the road has a cash machine but will charge you. Unlikely to visit again.

We went there for Sunday lunch witch was very disappointing we waited for an hour and a half after our booking time and then when it turned up it was cold and had to go back and then when it came back it was still cold and we had almost eaten our dinner and to of our party still had not had there dinner not good very disappointed.

Very friendly welcome and smart looking pub. Food was tasty and good value and the menu is non-fussy. Knows how to cook a steak to perfection.

Friendly atmosphere, the band was 5*! Not so happy about the amount of young kids who were intoxicated and falling all over the place!! Approached the landlord about concerns of this and was told to "mind my own business, I know their parents they are enjoying themselves" observed one young lass vomiting! Not surprising having watched them downing shots!!

My mum comes here quite often and did warn me about the managers 'quirky' attitude. I had booked for 4 people last sunday for lunch. When we sat down at the table there was only 3 of us and our 4th person was not responding to our calls. The manager shouted over to me from behind his bar that i couldnt sit there because there was only 3 of us (it had 4 chairs). After explaining our situation he continued by saying that we could not order our food until the 4th person had turned up. Looking around the restraunt, there were only seats of 2 and 4, so i didnt get where our 3 seater was, and the place was dead. When he ever so kindly agreed to take our orders i politely asked what desserts they had only to have "look love, tell me what meat you want like i asked then I'll tell you what desserts we have!" spat at me. I wasn't in position to tell him too shove his meal unfourtunaly, but it certainly ruined the meal. The food was ok. Nice beef and gravy, the veg was boiled to hell and even one of the staff commented on how off the carrots looked. I will not be returning. The guy, owner or what ever he is, is possibly one of the rudest people I've had the displeasure of meeting, the pub needs to be deep cleaned and the food is very average. A 2 has been given as my meat was nice, the rest of the staff seemed pleasant and the food came quickly.

Agree wholeheartedly with HonestCardiff17, this place has gone downhill in the last 18 months. We visited for Xmas dinner on 25th.

Went here last night and had the steak and ale pie , I can honestly say it has to be the best homemade pie I have ever tasted it was fabulous it came in it's own oval dish with a flaky pastry crust , it was a large portion which went down a treat it came with chips and peas . We were offered different options and choices the landlord couldn't do enough for us he was very welcoming , the pub has a lovely traditional feel very clean and cosy we will certainly be going back to try other meals from the menu .

I stopped going to The Angel some time ago after the quality/effort of the food served nose dived. Years ago you’d struggle to get a table on a Wednesday night for curry club and or for lunch on a Sunday, now it struggles to get anyone to attend at all. Having not been for a couple of years and noticed that the food hygiene rating had been increased to a 4, I thought I’d chance that things were better and would experience a Wednesday night for curry club once again. However I really should of stuck to what I know. I couldn’t of been more wrong. The rice was watery and mushy, the texture can only be described as when you leave ‘boil in the bag rice soak in water for too long’. The curry itself was overloaded with too much meat and again very watery, my plate was swimming with sauce. The most off putting thing is the cleanliness of the pub itself, all the furniture is dirty and dated, the tables are sticky, food crumbs from previous diners are embedded into the cracks and joints, the toilets are foul, Caerphilly Council must not have inspected them properly. Urine all over the floor, no soap to wash your hands, the toilets themselves had no loo roll, they’ve just not been inspected and looked after properly. I really would avoid this nasty place at all costs and would not return.

well the staff were very nice and sociable we had sunday lunch my partner loves meat so he was very happy with the amount given .you can have a choice of meats the amount of food was loads also dish of veggys if you come away hungary I would be shocked also lovely choice of sweets to follow .on the whole a lovely meal had by both of us .we will be going back to try out other meals thank you
