Pontygwindy Inn in Caerphilly

Went out for a family meal for our son’s birthday. The staff were very welcoming and friendly The Food was very nice we all enjoyed are meals I think that the meals are very good value for money and the size of the meals are very generous Would definitely recommend to others and we will be returning in the future

Great pub , we came here for the evenings after riding bike park wales. Very friendly and welcoming. Had a nice dinner here to.

Had to meet a client for a working lunch and needed a quiet corner for us to discuss business. Lovely little niches allowed us to do just that. Had a baguette and chips which did the job to keep me going. Lowri was a perfect host and I appreciate her accommodating us on such short notice.

Having had a last minute hiccup with a campsite we were booked in to, we were in need of a stopover in our Motorhome near to Cardiff for the following 3 nights. We found that The Pontygwindy offered stopovers in their large car park and so rang them to ask if they could accommodate us. Thankfully, the management were more than happy for us to stay for the 3 nights as long as we ate in the pub one night and bought drinks on the other two. We ate on the Thursday when they do a steak and pint special offer. We went for the sirloin steak and must say it was cooked beautifully, full of flavour and came with a plate full of chips, onion rings and other extras. It was certainly one of the best steak meals we've had in a long time. The pub is opposite to an Asda as well as about a 10 minute walk to the nearest station and about a 15 minute walk to Caerphilly town centre, so we found that the pub was also convenient for us. All in all, a very good location to stay, very friendly and welcoming staff, as well as great food. We will no doubt be back.

Hadn't been here for so long. Super impressed with everything. The staff were really welcoming and great with the kids. Food was delicious and plenty of it. Will be back soon

AVOID!!! Went there for sunday lunch only to have my wife step in dog poo on the carpet INSIDE the dining area. We were told it was from a dog they allowed in the day before. That means no one hovered the carpets from the day before. I felt sorry for a couple who were sat within 4 foot of the mess. I didn't finish my meal, didn't finish my drink. In hindsight we should have demanded a refund and walked out.

Great welcoming pub,was meet by the new owners thay were friendly and welcoming,and who are Cardiff devil fans which is great to,the restaurant and bar was a nice size and very clean,the bar staff was very friendly,the food was lovely and the portions was good size,overall it was a lovely place would recommend this pub and definitely coming back,

Called in for a Sunday Lunch ordered a beef and a chicken dinner......after waiting a considerable time......we were served tepid food which tasted of nothing.......the veg of carrots, less and broccoli were cold and waterlogged. Everything served (bar the broccoli and maybe the carrots) were frozen, there was nothing with a taste, with powdered mashed potatoes. My husband used the 'gents' which he said was disgusting with a dirty wet floor and smelly......his comment was ...there is no way we would order here, if that is their standard. But too late we had.....

Met a friend here with a view to eating. First impressions were not good the bar servers was sticky and obviously had received a quick wipe rather than being cleaned. No natural beers were available despite the signage saying Ale House. I then looked over to the dirty floor behind and bar. The bar back was not well presented with things just ‘dumped’ on the shelves including children’s toys. This place has a feel of being dingy and not looked after. The ‘manager, did not appear to take part in the business and sat at a table with her lap top. We decided not to stay if the front house was like this, what is the kitchen like?

Mothers day dinner with family. Lovely food, great service. Nice atmoshere. All the family enjoyed. Defiantly worth a visit

A large lack of customer service. I have frequented this pub many times but will not now return. I ordered a Surf and turf to be served a steak covered in peppercorns. (the mushrooms were also covered) This was not mentioned on the menu or at the time of order. At no time was a review of the food made by the staff. I couldn't eat the original steak. A replacement was offered with the comment that it is always served this way. I have eaten steak here many times and NEVER had peppercorns before. The manager of the pub then complained to the organiser of a group that I joined after my meal, that I had been rude! This was not the case and had nothing to do with the Group. The manager left the pub without talking to me at all. I hope that Marstons make contact with me to discuss this issue.

Booked for my 60 birthday 14 of us went and wow the food was amazing fast service very friendly staff will definitely be back

Went for my daughters 60th and my granddaughters 21st birthday. Siobhan dealt with our booking amazingly allowing us to decorate and giving us the best space to ourselves. We all had a mixture of different meals. Absolutely beautiful every single meal cooked to perfection. Can not thank her enough for her time and effort put into these special birthdays would definitely recommend

We have been coming here regularly for some time now. We have always found the food is high standard and well cooked. The staff are very helpful and friendly and accommodate our changes to the meals, e.g., swapping peas out for a salad garnish. We also find the beer is excellent quality. Will continue using this establishment.

Awful awful beer, the place has gone to the dogs from the pub it used to be. God knows when the pipes were last cleaned. Such a shame

Had a meal here last Sunday. We used to come here all the time but have only been in twice in the last two years. To be honest I was very pleasantly surprised as it was so quiet. The pub has been recently decorated and had a very pleasant atmosphere . The staff were very helpful and the food was excellent. Would recommend

My family and I booked to eat here for Christmas Day back in October. We had been here for Christmas Dinner back in 2021 and it was great, so we had full confidence returning. The pub is under new management but how it was all arranged was fine and they were very helpful upon booking. So we arrived on Christmas Day for our slot at 2pm. We waited in the bar area for 10 -15 minutes as there was nobody to greet us or show us to our tables. There was one young boy behind the bar and a young girl doing the table service. I managed to stop the young girl and ask where we were seated. She eventually came back with a book and sat us down. We were a party of 7, 3 adults and 4 children. She said she would be back to take our drinks order. That never happened, understandably so because the poor girl was run ragged. There was no Christmas music, no atmosphere at all. We sat and waited, and waited and waited. My friends were also booked as a large group beside us, they had the same experience. They were helping entertain my children as my youngest who is only 3 years old was starting to get restless. Their party were so hungry they ended up spending £9 on crisps at the bar. After roughly 1hr 45 mins they brought our starters out. At this point I asked if the children's food, which was chicken nuggets and chips (this was pre ordered as my children will not eat Xmas dinner) could come out, within 15 mins it was out. At this pont though, my children had been waiting 2 hours. My two 7 year olds were getting restless but my 3 year old had had enough. After 2 hours and 20 minutes, our mains came out and it was actually very poor. Nearly £50 for this meal and it had 2 little potatoes, burnt stuffing and was just not great quality at all. My step mother had the fish meal and it was like rubber. We ended up not eating it as we were so past it by this point. My father was incredibly upset about it all. Didnt help this was yhe first christmas my grandfather wasnt eith us after his passing this year. He spoke with a lady from the kitchen, respectfully, this was not the manager, we never saw the manager. She was very helpful and I think the staff had just had enough themselves. We ended up with a refund and left without having a Christmas dinner. Other families had left under the same circumstances. It ruined our day to be honest and it has put me off going out for Christmas Dinner ever again. This was not the staffs fault. The management only employed 4 staff. They were under immense pressure and it was all wrong. Those saying people were losing their tempers, I didn't see anyone being disrespectful, if anything people were being quite understanding. It was just poorly planned with staff etc and just not good enough. I eat regularly at the Pontygwindy, and it's such a shame as the food and service is usually great. I am unsure if I would ever return, especially as the day itself, and all the mistakes were not even acknowledged by the management. We didn't get one sorry, nobody coming to the tables to let us know there was a delay, nothing. But they are posting about new year on their Facebook page and removed their reviews section. I honestly thought the young girl serving was going to burst into tears at one point because as the only runner, she was taking all the stress of the pub. I hope this is a lesson learnt and things are different next year for anyone choosing to go. As an events organiser myself, I get it, it's not easy, it's very stressful but it simply was not good enough. More staff needed, 1 on the door to greet people, at least 2 behind the bar, 3 chefs, 3 runners minimum. Such a shame, the only positive was I was with my loved ones. So Merry Christmas to that

I booked Christmas Dinner couple months in advance, it was my first time ever going out for Christmas. We waited an hour an 40 mins before having starters and we didn't get them all but as they were busy I said it was not an issue and we would have the missing starters with mains but they never arrived. I ordered separate sides of roasts and pigs in blankets which also didn't arrive either. The food we received was overcooked and not enjoyable. Then there was an extremely long wait without seeing any member of staff that was assisting with the table service so we did not wait around for dessert as I had children getting restless. I did not see anyone being disrespectful or rude as the last review stated but quite a few people were raising concerns in a 'reasonable manner' as some were waiting 2 hrs there without having starters so some people were getting refunds and leaving. A lady on a table near me even went and offered to help out. I will say the staff were very polite and it was an absolute shame because it could have been amazing if they had the staff to deliver but only 2 I seen, which just simply wasn't enough. It's not something I would do again.

Wow what can i say my first time having Christmas Dinner out I am so glad I went here the food was first class lovely young lady getting the drinks and bringing the food. All our meal were hot and very well presented they were very busy but did not reflect in the service given

I booked 2 months in advance for Christmas dinner for myself and my husband us being our age can’t really cook for ourselves. When we got to the pub we was sat down by a young lady who got us drinks was very helpful and kind. We then had a starters around 15 minutes after arrival. Absolutely beautiful so well presented. Our turkey dinners were to die for. And the desserts were gorgeous. Hats off to the chef cooking for so many people in Christmas is just unbelievable! The young lady the manager has really pulled something amazing out the bag. Very unfortunate how rude people were being to these lovely staff who gave nothing but grief to the staff the whole day. They did so well. Definitely going back next year

Absolutely terrible had our starters in 3 stages taking 45 mins from the first to the last and 2hrs 45 mins for our main course to arrive. avoid for Xmas dinner

Highly recommended for birthdays All food was great and came out at the same time and didn't take long.Everyone enjoyed their food.My steak was delicious.Staff were very friendly and made sure everything was okay.Even brought out my birthday cake Will definitely be returning.

Came with my friends for a catch up was suppose to be 5 of us but ended up being only 3 of us but the atmosphere, food, drinks and friendliness of the staff made up for it. The food was delicious, Thankyou to our waitress Emily. 10 out of 10 for everything that evening. 100% recommend this place

Excellent service, food and drink. Lovely warm atmosphere and friendly staff who made all feel welcome. A party of over 20 was catered for with no problems. Food served with no delays and food was a hit with everyone. Plenty of parking and the premises is truely wheelchair accessible in that it has great ramp access, lots of room to manoeuvre around the premises in a wheelchair and accessible toilets. Visited 14/2/22,me and my partner decided last minute to pop out for a meal this Valentine's! Host very accomodating with the table and despite pre warning us that there was a delay on food,it all arrived in a timely manner. We both enjoyed our starters and main meals,,which were plentiful and the service def came with a smile.We would both recommend to everyone and will definitely be returning! Under new management ,and it shows.

Great food and atmosphere, All the staff I encountered was very polite and friendly made me feel comfortable straight away, The barmaid Tabitha was very welcoming and managed my drink order very professionally, The service for my table was very smooth thanks to our waitress Emily who was very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients that were in the food. Plus the service she provided us was fast and always had a smile on her face. Would definitely come again.

Haven’t been here in such a long time and fair play the food was amazing, staff so friendly I was served by Leah and she was so polite and made sure we had everything we needed, my husband had the chicken burger and didn’t know where to start as the portions were huge. My steak was £10 and didn’t have one ounce of grissle on it even came with the sauce included in the price. Happy customers will defo be returning 5***

Ate here on the weekend with friends. Usually enjoy this pub but was sadly a disappointment on this visit. Our friends meal was forgotten about and when we informed the waitress, she had a careless attitude and didn’t apologise for forgetting the order. The vinegar was in a leftover ketchup bottle which squirted all over our meals. The food was average and unfortunately my friend felt unwell after eating here.

My family went there for Xmas Dinner. All I no food was burnt and soup was disgusting and Dinner was burnt and the veg was very hard to eat and they waited an hour for desserts but when they booked it was for 15 and they didn't have a clue what they were doing so they stuck them on the little veranda. They wanted to put them upstairs but they had a gold medalist that won in the para Olympics for UK and she is disable and she came along way to have dinner with the family. But out of 15 : 10 have been very ill.its has ruined everyone's Xmas .....I hope you enjoyed your Christmas because my family haven't. Disgusting place

Booked for a family Christmas dinner for 5 couldn’t find us on the list booked for 1.30 5 of us on a table only suitable for 4 starter were changed last minute so no salmon ended up with prawn cocktail or you could have onion soup cocktail was disappointing Then our meal came out 1 hr later after starters frozen roasts and cauliflower sprouts were hard . No boiled potatoes just roastsLeft tip with manageress hope she passed it on to the staffCover fell off 1 of the seats as in picture Toilets were a disgrace No track and trace no social distance no one wearing masks on arrival Definitely don’t recommend sorry

Went to meet Santa with the kids and for food was an absolute shocking experience.Food took 2 hours 2 come and was rank looked like it has been rushed they didn't get the order right and was bringing out starters with mains.There was no where near enough staff on for something you had to pay for and even Santa was behind the bar rather the with the kids Which the kids questioned.When you asked what was going on why everything was so wrong the gave excuses that it was our fault that people had ordered at same time even tho 1 till open and hat the old manager was returning.Stay clear much better places to eat and drink in ceaphilly.

Went last night for a girly night out. The staff were lovely and we had a great night. Lovely clean pub with a nice atmosphere. A few more vegetarian options on the menu would be good.

Came to the pontygwyndy tonight with friends for a Christmas meal, had an amazing night. Table was laid out festive and really got us in the christmas spirit, along with the decorations in the pub. The staff went above and beyond, especially Lisa, Scott, Josh and Charlie who went above and beyond. Thank you so much, will definitely be back soon

Booked here last minute for my daughters 18th large family meal of 11 people. Very good service, lovely food even had a free bottle of champers. Will certainly return.

Couldn’t fault the service from Scott at the Pontygwindy Caerphilly, always helpful even when we took ages to decide from the menu as we were spoilt for choice! He was the perfect host and will definitely make a return visit, great place and highly recommend.

Went for afternoon meal .it was very enjoyable. Lovely place , lovely people. Very very reasonably price. Staff very polite and friendly . Nice variable munu , Will certainly go there again .

I visited here with a friend as in the past the food had been okay. We ordered the cheese and pickle sandwich on granary bread. When it arrived the bread was thin sliced wholemeal, no butter, hardly any cheese, but plenty of brown lettuce. I’m giving it one star as the two bottles of Diet Pepsi were okay.

Have visited the Pontyqwindy Inn twice in the past 2 weeks for a meal with friends. Staff are warm and friendly, always pleasant and food has been very good and not much wait time. Bar and waitreses staff Jaycee and Maria, are lovely and friendly chatty and helpful. Would highly recommend it to others for a meal or sosial gathering.

Me and my partner brought my in laws here for a bit of food. We live locally and have never been here before.There is a wide selection of drinks and lots of varieties of flavoured gins. My in laws had steaks for food and they both really enjoyed it said it was cooked beautifully. I had mushroom pasta and my partner had a bbq chicken. All boiling hot, cooked to perfection and tasted great! The waitress and the bar man where really friendly, really accommodating and easy to talk to, made us feel welcomed and where happy to answer any queries we had. As we left, the chef was outside and even he was friendly. Overall a great experience and will happily come back regularly for food and drinks! 5*

I have eaten at the Pontygwindy a number of times but this is the first under the new landlord and I have to say the food quality and service has improved immeasurably. I had a sharing platter Sunday roast and the meat just fell apart as you ate it a massive improvement on the stringy meat the last time I had the dish. Service was second to none, we hadn’t booked and had a bad experience with another establishment in the area with the lack of respect of regulations relating to Covid so we had walked out, the staff couldnt be more helpful in understanding anxiety and making me feel like they wanted my custom and for that I really thank them

We decided to give it a go for our usual staff Friday lunch and were very happy with our visit. The Pontygwindy staff were friendly and efficient. Covid rules were strictly adhered to and the restaurant was very clean. The food was delivered quickly, was piping hot and very tasty. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and we will be returning without doubt.

Staff at the pontygwindy are fab nothing is too much trouble they are very good at what they do which makes every visit a pleasure, since Covid their rules and guidelines are very easy to follow and we feel very safe there, Elsie, Rachel, Becky and Gary are so accommodating i love this place lovely food lovely atmosphere and fabulous staff, can’t wait to visit again.

Hubby and I just got back from here. We both had meals. I had the Tavener burger, hubby had the gammon. They were absolutely delicious and excellent value for money. We were served by Lisa. She is a credit to your business, nothing was too much trouble for her. She went out of her way to make sure we were enjoying our visit. Thank you Lisa, you were awesome!! Other staff were very friendly too. We can't wait to return. And to top off our visit we saw Dave & Shirley off Gogglebox pass by walking their dogs

We visit here very often. The food is always good and the drinks are always good. The staff cannot do enough to help and make every visit exceptional!!! I would highly recommend the place to anyone and everyone! They always make a fuss of the little ones and make sure that they have a great time aswell. We stopped by for lunch (my parents, myself and my 3 year old daughter) we were served by Rachel, Elsle and Becky. Food was lovely and the staff couldn’t do enough to help, even changed items on my little girls meals so she could have exactly what she wanted. Really friendly and helpful. Was pleasantly surprised when the bill came. Will definitely be going for food there again.

My family and I was greeted at the front desk by Shaun and Elsie, they made sure we all sanitised our hands. In my opinion I think that they have done brilliant with COVID regulations, E.G track and trace, sanitise, one way system, masks and table service. Our order was taken by Elsie and our food was made by Shaun. Elsie and Shaun made sure we was comfortable and happy with everything we did/ate. Let’s just say the food was amazing. My dads steak was how he liked it, mine, my sisters and our partners chicken tikka masala was delicious. We couldn’t have asked for better service or food. 100% recommend this restaurant and Shaun and Elsie you was amazing Thankyou.Our family will be returning Amazing job

First Sunday lunch out after lockdown and was not left disappointed! Dinner was cooked to perfection! We were so full we couldn't manage a dessert, so will have to go back again to try one! Staff were friendly and welcoming, couldn't fault anything!

Had lunch here today first class service by Elise & Becky, they made us feel welcome from the minute we walked through the door, food was fab, never usually finish a meal but I certainly finished this, both our meals were lovely. So thanks again girls see you again soon. X

Awful place to eat. DO NOT RECOMMEND Just visited for a Sunday Roast and was absolutely disgusted by the quality. Firstly, our starter was freezing cold, however ‘ resolved’ by re-heating in the microwave. Next came the main, which we tried to be open minded about until it was served and the meat was luke warm and gravy was freezing cold, not to mention the other items on the plate lacking warmth and texture! I would like to thank the young waitress who tried to resolve the issues unlike the other staff who were rather rude and lacking professionalism.

first meal out since pubs reopened . staff amazing as always . food was awful . pepper sauce tasted of cheese ( don't ask me how) , my chicken was dry. chips where rank . my partners Sunday lunch was overcooked , beef was chewy and struggled to cut with the knife , kids chicken bits where way over cooked . we got there at 1 ordered straight away . but yet had run out of lamb and chicken dinners, no garlic bread , no pouring cream for our desserts and my partners sticky toffee pudding was still freezing in the middle . waste of money won't b returning

I had to write a review and give them the praise they deserve. We had a meal Tuesday and the service and food was excellent. Special mention to Eisle and Ben. Very professional and safe. Covid friendly service. Well done Lisa and Richard

Very welcoming on arrival at the pub adhered to all rules and regulations Elsle & Ben were lovely Food was outstanding and very good value for money Quick service Would recommend this pub and would definitely be going back

Popped in today just for a drink, but the food smelt amazing! Staff were lovely, and friendly, will be going back very soon, probably for food too!

Having been put into a local lockdown and having to look for places in our borough, we had never been here. Glad we did because not only were the staff so helpful and adhered to C-19 regulations, the food was beautiful. We have been again, several times since and will now visit this restaurant on a more regular basis.

Popped in for lunch, food was amazing and staff Elsie and Ben were happy and smiley and couldn’t do enough.
