Walked in around 2.30pm in the afternoon, expecting to be able to have a hot meal. Went to the counter to order and a disinterested member of staff just looked up and said they had stopped serving hot food. No eye contact and she was very abrupt. Sign on door said they were open until 4pm!! I've stopped here many a time in the post when driving through Machynlleth, unfortunately I won't be returning again. Went to the cafe down the road and had a lovely warm welcome ...and hot food. That wil now be my new go to cafe when on my travels.

This was my first visit since the pandemic. They have thought very hard about making the whole experience safe for customers. The food and service were every bit as good as I remembered and opening up the historic back room enhanced the experience. This is a good clean local cafe run by Welsh people. Lots of locals conversing in Welsh enjoying a variety of home cooking style meals. We called in for a coffee but would certainly return when next in Mach. The blackboard offers several casserole type British meals which are changed daily and there are veggie options. Menu has lots of British standards as well as sandwiches etc. Worth a try.

A cheapskate proprietor sources the very cheapest supplies similar to what supermarket cafes provide even teabags are the basic cardboard flavoured types. Its cheap but large options generally include only an extra sausage and rasher of small bacon to make two. If you're on a lunch break it's handy as it is central and reasonably quick if the towns quite. Tip:- Staff should avoid wiping their nose with hands when in view of customers.

Ordered the big breakfast, the bacon was inedible and the sausages were quite simply the worst I have ever tasted. £5.50 for greasy mushrooms, a couple of cheap brand tinned tomatoes a fried egg and one slice of thin toast just doesn't cut it, even the tea wasn't included in the price. Revolting, don't waste your time or money.

I would really like this cafe were it not for the couple of times I have been made to feel very unwelcome. I can't help but feel local Welsh speakers are made more welcome than the English speakers. Twice I have been refused service because 'the kitchen is closed' even though on the second occasion the cafe wasn't due to close for 55 minutes, and I was only requesting desert, having already eaten my main course. The food is a bit hit and miss also. Sad because the cafe has a lovely homley feel sometimes - if you are one of the included customers!

Truly disgusting inedible food. The mushrooms where old and full of fat instead of flavour, the sausages where as cheap as could be and tasted so, the bacon barely passable. The toast smothered in an axle grease like substance. The tea fair. To top it off you take your life in your own hands as you walk across the cafe as the floor is so greasy. But maybe it is someone's cup of tea.

There are a lot of places to eat in Mach and Maengwyn is popular with locals. It is very much hit or miss. I have eaten here several times and the menu is appealing but the reality is the food tends to be bland. Vegetables tend to be watery and it is best to avoid the roasts when they are on offer. The last time I visited I ordered steak and kidney pie. I asked if they did mashed potatoes which the person behind the counter said they did. I asked for peas and gravy. When the order came there were no mashed potatoes but rather large boiled potatoes. I was told they didn't do mashed potatoes. There were no peas but rather anemic looking cabbage in a pool of water and carrots. I asked for the peas. The pie was disappointing. It was not home made but a supermarket type of pie. No crisp pastry but soggy and with about three bits of meat in it.

I visited for the Machynlleth Comedy Festival. My breakfast was ok but customer service was appalling. The food took 38 minutes to arrive (based on the time stamp of a text I sent while waiting), by which time my untouched mug of tea was cold. I showed the waitress and asked if it could be replaced. She felt the side of the cup and told me that if I wanted a replacement “it would be extra”. As I expected, the tea at the bottom of the mug was stone cold, which rather spoilt my meal.

The place was very busy and i had to wait for the sandwiches to be made, once we had these we took them home to eat as we had 5 dogs with us and could not sit outside to have lunch. Both sandwiches were on white bread and an alternative was not offered. The sandwich was cut in half and between the ham and the bread was a blue catering plaster which had been used and obviously come off someone during the preparation of this sandwich

There were loads of locals there (always a good sign!) and many of them speaking Welsh, which was nice to hear. the lady behind the counter greeted us in Welsh and changed to perfect English as soon as she heard our English accents- there wasn't a trace of any attitude. She was friendly and chatty, asked what we were visiting for and recommended some nice local walks. The food is pure greasy-spoon and doesn't pretend to be anything else so if you want something macrobiotic or fancy, this isn't the place for you. Cheap and cheerful is the theme at this cafe, but this is the place to go if you want to hear spoken Welsh in town. Go here enough and you start to recognise some people seem to be here every day. There is a part of me that prefers the exciting vegetarian food some of the more hippy places in Machynlleth can provide, and then, when it all gets a bit too yoghourt-weaving for my liking, I retreat to the Maengwyn Cafe. A classic place to come and have breakfast. All day breakfasts available in both meat and vegetarian formats, and both are very good, never had a bad breakfast here. Will you get organic, free-range, sausage here? Well, basically, no. But you do get what you pay for, and you get decent portions, and hot food.I have had roast meats here and they have been really very good. What lets this sort of meal down here is that vegetables often seem to be limited to potato (or chips) and peas, when a greater range of vegetables would really make the meal. There is a range of cakes available here. Sadly I have had a bun or scone (or Welsh cake, I can't really remember) that, while not stale, was not quite fresh either. The classic cakes, lemon-meringue pies etc. here can be described as 'standard'. But again, not expensive.Inside seating is basic, but the place is rarely fully packed, so it can be quite comfortable, and there are a few outside seats that are in full sun (weather permitting). Were Columbo a real person, he would probably go the Maengwyn Cafe, and I cannot say I would blame him, it is one of my haunts.

Tinned whole tomatoes (never seen them actually served before- thought they were just for cooking with), hash browns-heated from frozen, like from Tesco or something, hard fried eggs, good mushrooms though. Entering the cafe is like going back fifty years. It is simple with a hand written chalk menu board and counter at the rear and lots of wooden tables. My wife and I have eaten here on several occasions, but this is the first time I put a review on TripAdvisor. On our last visit, we both ordered the 'normal' size roast dinners, as opposed to the 'small' portions. The amount of food that arrived on the plates was enormous. Lots of vegetables, but also lots and lots of meat with good gravy.I can't remember the exact price, but I think the meals only costed around £7 each. Amazing value. Note that you order at the counter and pay on order for everything. The service is very good and the staff are all pleasant. On previous occasions we have also had their pie and chips offering, and again, the large plates are really piled up with food. You always get a big slice of the home-made pie of the day.The cafe is full of locals and seems to be the place to socialise. There is a great atmosphere. You really feel like this is the centre of Machynlleth. Many of the tables can sit 10 people.I wish this cafe was nearer home so that I could visit more often.

We have lived in Wales for many years and can't fault this place for GOOD food that's cooked well. The staff and owners have always made us welcome. Must say when we first started eating in the Maengwyn I thought it was a little like a transport cafe: But dont let that make your mind up. We have family in the Midlands and they always say; can we go the cafe jn Mac.

This cafe is always busy and very popular with the Welsh speaking community. The staff are great. Food is typical cafe fare but home made, well cooked and good value.

I've been stopping at Bwyty Maengwyn for breakfasts, lunches and snacks for many years while travelling up and down Wales and have never been disappointed; simple food perfectly cooked every time. Breakfasts are never greasy - just delicious. The beef stew (cawl) just like home made. Food always freshly prepared, good and hot, very reasonable prices, lovely staff and café always full of local people. It is a perfect café and I hope it is there for a long time to come!

We dropped in without booking hoping to get lunch. I was with my friend and her disabled dad. They were able to offer us a table and from the start the experience was excellent. The staff member ( I think it was the Manager) came out to the car park to see if we needed any help with the wheelchair. We were promptly seated and drinks and food order taken quickly. All members of staff were polite and friendly. The food came in a good waiting time and we were all really pleased with the food. I had an ultimate burger, my friend a Thai beef dish and her dad an all day breakfast. Great portion sizes, hot and all tasty. Really reasonably priced as well ! Thankyou for such a great experience

Friendly staff, hearty, simple menu, great coffee. We stopped here after walking Crickhowell to Brecon via the Black Mountains. They weren’t bothered about muddy boots but we took off at door anyway. Toilets immaculate. Chef’s playlist that could be heard in the dining area - not a bad song on it for about an hour. Good on him!!

We stopped here to break up a long journey. Straight away it seemed very unwelcoming. My son is autistic, and because he seemed more comfortable in the corner section we asked to move tables. We were advised that was the dog friendly section, and obviously we would move if needed, it was quiet at the time, but this seem like an inconvenience to move tables. Then when my son was wandering in the pub, this seemed to annoy a couple of guests, and I know he seemed hyperactive but these are some of his autistic traits, this seemed to annoy one couple in particular, where the man was making very rude comments ( I know you have no control over who comes into your pub) but overall it just felt very unwelcoming in there. Are kids not allowed in here? It didn't seem like it. We come past this pub often, so we will not be stopping here again.

My wife and I were staying in a B&B in Berriew which didn’t cook evening meals on a Sunday, so we decided to try this inn for our dinner. We arrived without reservations, but were quickly shown to a table by a very pleasant member of staff who immediately took our drinks order. The drinks arrived and we ordered our food soon after. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive, and it looked very well presented. My wife had lasagne, which she told me was hot and tasty, however my steak and ale pie with chips was not quite so. Again, my meal was hot, but the meat in the pie was very grisly, which was a shame as the pastry was excellent. The chips and beans with my meal were first class, so absolutely no problems with them. As we ate our meal the chef came out and asked if everything was okay with the food. I told him about the meat in the pie, to which he laughed and then walked away. Now, what’s the point in asking me about my meal if you are not going to take action when you receive such a comment? Anyway, we finished the meal and went up to the bar to pay, at which time we were asked again if all was okay. I told the member of staff at the bar about the meat and this time it had a totally different outcome, in that someone, whom I took to be the manager, became involved, and she showed concern about the fact that my meal had not been perfect. She also told me that she would be having words with the supplier about said pie. We ended the conversation coming to an amicable agreement of a goodwill gesture, so I’m more than happy with the outcome. If it had not have been for the issue with the pie then this meal would have been almost perfect, in that the staff were lovely, the restaurant was clean and in a good state of decoration, and the service was first rate. My only other comment would be that the prices were a tad dearer than around my home city of Leicester, but not unusual for a country inn.
