Excellent lunch (beef teryaki). Lovely staff in small but well decorated Central London spot. Good for business and friends catching up.

What a delightful restaurant and so authentically Japanese. All the way from the incredibly warm welcome from the manager Yuri to the amazing food. We absolutely loved our evening here and will definitely be returning. The prices are very reasonable for the high quality food, particularly in such an expensive part of London.

My daughter and I wandered in here on a busy Friday night and were seated in the basement. Everything we ordered was delicious. Our favorite share plate was the miso eggplant!

Popped in for a quick solo lunch on a rainy day. Had some lovely karage and yakitori, plus some white rice and a beer, which made for a very satisfying lunch for a little more than £20. Everything was delicious and the karage was super hot when served, which always makes fried food even more enjoyable. Great location, 5 mins away from the National Gallery, and great selection of Japanese pop music playing softly in the background.

Nice atmosphere, decor, and location. Food quality is what I expect from the canteen across the road at the Japan centre, not a nice sit down restaurant.

The agedashi tofu was brilliant. Everything else was also very nice. The price was really good. The staff were nice. We would go back, but there are only a few vegan options so not much choice. Vegan dishes are not marked so you will need to ask.

Great veggie katsu, and great atmosphere.

I was looking for an nice Japanese place to have lunch and stumbled upon this place. Small and cozy with a nice selection of fresh food and drinks. The local owner, native from Hiroshima. Was super friendly and recommended a great Sake (Shusen). The Agadashi Tofu is great dish. Smooth and flavorful. The beef dish was ok, with lots of fried mushroom and sprouts. Overall, a good place for a quick lunch and taste of Japan.

Harrison, Yuri and the team were wonderful, accommodating, friendly and understanding both before and during lunch for my partner's birthday. We were a party of 15 but 2 unfortunately became a no-show (1 due to illness, the other late due to unforeseen circumstances). We had pre-ordered our meal choices but they took off one meal and packaged up the other for us! Our drinks order was taken very quickly and I had preordered a few starters for the table which came out in a timely manner. The main food was tasty and everyone really enjoyed themselves saying it was delicious, and the staff were very friendly, thank you! ハリソンさん、ゆりさん、それにスタッフのみなさん、私のパートナーのbirthday lunchの始まる前も食事中も心配りがあり、気さくに接して下さり、素晴らしかったです。 我々15人の内、残念にも二人が病気と何かの事情で出席できずでいたところ、前もってオーダーをしていたメニューの内のひとつを外し、また、ひとつは包んでいただきありがとうございました。 飲み物のオーダーをとどこうりなく取ってくださり、事前にオーダーした前菜もタイミングよく出していただいたのも、とても良かったです。 主食の方も美味しく頂き、本当に皆して楽しむことが出来ました。 ありがとうございました。

The restaurant looks cute, and the service was nice. I’ve ordered Tonkatsu Pork with rice. The pork was very tasty but just a bit too fatty for me, my friend was fine, I will say it depends on what you like. And the steamed rice was pretty good, but my friend found it bit soft for her. I like it, good to have a try.

Food is good, staff are pleasant and nice, in particular the young gentleman, smart and helpful.

We booked a reservation, but were allocated to the worst seat in the restaurant. They also didn’t deal with our complaint properly.

We were lucky to find a table for dinner on Friday night and Machiya did not disappoint. The service is super kind, quick and the atmosphere is good. We ordered the aubergine, beef with mushrooms and the katsu curry. I can confidently say it was by far the best katsu curry I’ve ever had. We also tried the yuzu chocolate cheesecake, amazing. We have also discovered that this place does delivery, something we will definitely try in the future.

Lovely food. Took me back to my time in Tokyo. Katsu Curry a very good sized portion, with perfect panko and flavour, and Matcha Mille Crepe was delicious

Very overpriced for the quality of food. Teppan beef came with very raw unpalatable bean sprouts. They offered a mini gas stove to heat up the food which made it somewhat edible. Not expecting the food at this price point to be so underprepared. My friend ordered Kinoko don and she found it very under-seasoned and couldn’t even finish it.

The food is just right and the place is very warmth. Just the right place to eat lunch in China Town London.

Service can be slow at times but overall a wonderful experience!

The food was okay although the beef was a bit on the dry side. The bigger problem was the service. I was seated at the corner of the bar table under which there’s a hook for hanging your bag/jacket. It’s still 8 degree c so I had an overcoat which would leave part of my coat on the ground if I used the hook. What I usually do is to place my coat on the chair back but the chairs at the bar table had no back. So I left my coat on the table next to me which would take half the space of an adjacent seat which wasn’t occupied when I was seated. Probably about 10 mins later a customer came and a server simply shoved my coat towards me without even asking or saying a word. I mean, I would be happy to take it elsewhere if you asked, but she wasn’t even bothered, said nothing and left. Seeing that, another staff member (probably the manager) came forward and offered to place my coat somewhere on another hook, who by the way seated me and my friend and took our orders so was obviously aware that I had left my coat on that part of the table and he could have offered that much earlier. It’s not a big deal to be honest but it’s definitely not service charge worthy. And to pay, apart from the standard 12.5% service charge (of course) they used some sort of system where you scan the QR code and pay by Apple Pay, and then you are charged an additional fee of 50p which I couldn’t find a way to remove…again it’s just 50p but I would rather keep it to myself. Don’t think I’ll ever come back.

I went there in September 2022, while looking for a restaurant that served Japanese cuisine I came across this place, it looked small on the outside but I was very cozy and nice, the owner was very nice and the food was something else, and I met this nice waitress of Japanese origin, that really helped it look more authentic 😉. I liked it so much that I had to go again before I left for the airport. And next time I visit London this will be the first place I want to go to.

원래 이곳에 요리 한식갈까 옆에 일본 라멘집 가려다 줄이 길어서 이곳으로 갔는데 굉장히 실망했습니다. 우선 치킨규동은 그냥저냥 먹을만해요. 추가로 국물먹고 싶어서 우동누들 시켰는데 진짜 면만 나오더라구요. 전 국물이랑 같이 나오는 줄요. 이걸 어떻게 먹으라고? 치킨규동에요?? ㅋㅋ 미리 말해주면 안 시켰을텐데 아쉬움이 남습니다. 맥주도 시켰는데 음식 거의 다먹고도 안 나오길래 말하니 그제서야 주더군요.

Extremely disappointed - I’ve been wanting to try here for years but unfortunately, a big let down. We can understand the part that perhaps service was only extremely slow because it was a Friday night but the food quality should still remain. We ordered the Katsu pork (pork cooked well but there are much better katsu curries in London) and the beef rice (extremely dry and bland). If the beef was cooked well, just steamed rice and an egg is fine but when it’s gritty and so over cooked that it’s become flavourless, it was a struggle to even eat half of it. The only thing that was good about our visit were the chicken wings. I’m sorry for leaving such a review. I really did want to be a fan but left the opposite.

Wonderful, very special taste with a distinctive menu, this place should be packed. Every time I've eaten here, it's been truly exceptional.

Waiter handed the card machine asking for the tip (3 options, 5, 10 and 12%) which made me think it wasn’t included on the bill, just to my surprise when I checked afterwards, a 12.5% was already added, so ended up paying £90 on a £70 bill. We were in a rush and didn’t check properly, I admit it, but it’s very misleading. Service was slow and not very attentive nor responding. Food is ok but won’t change your life.

Cute place. It was busy when we meandered over there for a late lunch but we were seated quickly. There is space on the ground floor as well as a similar layout basement but in a darker colour scheme. Service was excellent and friendly and food was well prepared and quickly served. Chairs are a wee bit uncomfortable for the taller folk but otherwise cozy atmosphere.

The hospitality was second to none - felt really welcomed and the atmosphere was great, not too loud not too quiet. It also felt quite traditional. We went for a few small dishes - the food was delicious - will come back. The momo (peach) sake was really really delicious.. !

A real gem in the most touristy part of London 💎 This place has an indescribable atmosphere, something that reminds you of home, wherever your home might be. The staff makes you feel at ease the very second you step into the room. It seems to be an intrinsic Japanese quality, yet one rarely found in London’s hospitality sector Food. What do I even begin with. In the 3 times that I have been here, I tried quite a few things and was never disappointed. A couple faves are definitely Kara-age and Agedashi Tofu. My suggestion is to bring a friend with you to get the chance to share and try multiple things. However if you come alone, you will be greatly cared for anyway. All the food is of impeccable quality and taste, and the selection of drinks is vast and satisfying - plum wine is a great choice to wash down any of the delicious fried dishes. The only teeny tiny problem that I wish to point out is that the neon lighting in the counter seating ares is slightly flickery, it would be much better to have warmer non flickering lighting. Nevertheless, great place, great food and great people - absolutely recommended!

My food was great but they didn't have anything gluten free for my friends apart from rice. However they did say they were looking to change their menu very soon.

Wonderful food - the teppan beef was particularly excellent, as were the chicken yakitori - but everything was good. Kirin on tap was perfect. It was a tricky evening for service, so near to Christmas. Despite asking for a quiet table, we didn't get to sit where we'd wanted to and were initially placed at the bar next to a party of 5 who were quite boisterous, but we were moved after discussing with the manager, which made things better. There were a few other niggles which could have been avoided, overall they took away a little from enjoying the otherwise amazing food! As this was a dinner between friends who had not seen each other for a while and don't get to dine out that often, it was perhaps more impactful than on a less special occasion. To his credit, the manager called me today and apologized, which was very much appreciated. This went a long way to restoring faith in what hundreds of people obviously feel is a great restaurant - which is why we'd gone there in the first place based on other reviews. It's not a large venue, so next time we go, we'll have a better idea what to expect, and might choose a quieter time than a friday evening so close to Christmas.

Went for an evening meal had had the following; - chicken katsu curry. 10/10. Could not fault it was so tasty and a great portion. Recommend - Tsukune. 1000/10. Amazing. One of the nicest things I ate during this trip to London - Nikujaga. 8/10. Very tasty also. But the other food was better. - teriyaki salmon. 9/10. Also amazing. My partners favourite dish. All the food was absolutely heavenly. Lovely atmosphere. Very cosy feel to it. Nice clean look. Cocktails also nice. Would really recommend this place to anyone visiting London.

Food is overpriced, food quality is below average, stove was not working for more than three times, food was under cooked, super loud in a tiny place, and the maintenance of the place is also really bad with a screw on the wall that would scratch your hand if you didn’t notice. High expectation but ended up with really bad experience, will never go back

The good is excellent. The menu has some really good options with out being too much. The good itself is delicious and definitely want to go again. The staff are helpful and friendly, but it can get busy and it is a small and cramped place to move around in.

Overpriced and overcrowded - food was average (not average for restaurant level, average for homecooking level)

It was a disappointed experience of having Tonkatsu, which is a little bit dried, and batter fell apart from the park chop. Only a small portion of tonkatsu is juicy. But, one thing needs to be complimented that is the batter is crispy and soft. The tofu is fine but it's better to add some mashed mooli in the sauce.

Great place but they attempt to trick you twice when you pay adding mandatory (which you can’t remove when you pay manually by card) and then adding additional tips. Dear Machiya, I would like to remind you that it is illegal in the uk now!

Great authentic Japanese restaurant near to the theatre. They don't have edamame but somehow it didn't matter, I would recommend and definitely will be back. Thanks Machiya

A lovely restaurant with a fabulous atmosphere. The service was great as they were very welcoming and tried super hard to seat us on a busy night. The miso soup was excellent, the Horensō no Gomaae tasted so fresh and had a nice crunch to it, plus the portion size was more than enough for two. My eel was presented beautifully and tasted gorgeous too. Will definitely be back soon.

I hesitated to post because we were so focused on devouring the deliciousness in front of us that we forgot to take any photos of our food! But I’ll be returning soon and hopefully not forget again! My sister and I had dinner here on Monday night. We had: Kyurizuke (pickled cucumber) Naidu dengaku (miso aubergine) Kara age (fried chicken) Teppan beef (sizzling beef over mushrooms) Tonkatsu pork And some steamed rice. For drinks we had a spritzer-style drink (sorry I can’t recall the name) and some umeshu. The food was delish - I will be returning specifically for the tonkatsu pork, aubergine and picked cucumber. The tonkatsu took me straight back to Tokyo - I was in my happy place! Great value with the portions. Lovely little joint with, great service. We were sat right by the entrance so I didn’t see the rest of the space but it was cosy enough. Small tables where we sat.
