Probably one the best casual Japanese restaurants I've been to. A small place with clean and warm minimalist design. Well presented and delicious food.

An average experience. The food was bland and needed more salt/flavour. Service was slow. The only highlight was the wilted spinach and nuts that we shared as a starter.

Amazing food. Great service. I went for 3 starters: fried tofu, meet balls and fried aubergines. It all was delicious. The food comes imminently, piping hot.

Small Japanese restaurant just off Haymarket, a couple of blocks from Piccadilly Circus. We had a noodle dish, katsu curry, side of tenderstem broccoli, and green tea. Food was excellent, as were the customer service and decor of the restaurant. We were welcomed, and it was a great dining experience. Prices are reasonable for London and the neighborhood.

Reasonable (for London), authentic Japanese food. Had the udon which was good but my friends said the pork katsu rice was so so.

IN LOVE WITH THEIR MATCHA DESSERTS!! 10/10 would def go back here to try their main dishes!! 💚💚 Edit: came back here a year later for my birthday dinner and the waiters came and sang happy birthday for me🥹🥹🥹 it was a heart warming experience and I really appreciated it.. one of the waiters were really nice to me as when I was done with the food, i told them I wanted to get dessert but would like to walk around first (as I was so full! Portions are huge) and she made sure the desserts I wanted were in stock 🩷 Katsu curry was great, as usual the matcha desserts are the best. Will definitely come back here!

The chicken chop rice was delicious. Unfortunately the teppanyaki steak was a bit tough and the mushrooms were burnt. A bit expensive.

I came across this restaurant as it was very conveniently located to the Harold Pinter theatre and the reviews seemed to be good. We arrived for an early meal at 17:45 and were given a nice table by the window, very quickly the restaurant filled up with other diners. We gave the waitress our order and asked if we should order anything else as we had no experience of Japanese food. She advised us to reduce our order by one of the large plates and instead order more of the small plates to give us a better idea of Japanese cuisine. We did this and soon the food arrived. Absolutely excellent and the waitress had given us very good advice. A really excellent meal with very good service and a great atmosphere. We will definitely visit Machiya again

It's a bit salty. The price isn't cheap, and I wonder if there's a curry like this.

Had a great pre-show meal here. Udon ramen with beef! Tasty Sake Spritz. Salmon starter was amazing.

Went back for the famous tonkatsu for the first time since Covid. Still as perfectly cooked and juicy as ever. Also had the chicken katsu curry, but that was just so-so

I visited in September 2023. The gyudon was made with minced beef instead of the usual sliced beef, which was a bit disappointing, especially considering the price. When I tried to pay the bill online, there was an additional fee for the payment which I found quite unnecessary and confusing.

I always enjoy eating here. Good food and service.

We were able to eat there early without a reservation, ideal before going to a musical. The service is extremely friendly, the prices are very correct and the food is wonderful. The portions very generous. The homemade lemonade (yuzu or ginger) is absolutely delicious. It may not look like much from the outside but it is definitely worth a visit.

Our server was so sweet and attentive; we loved chatting with her. She recommended a delicious sake. We had the beef udon, pork donburi, grilled chicken skewers, karagae, and miso aubergine. The aubergine was a bit sweet for my taste but everything else was 10/10.

Amazing food and amazing service ! Be sure to book as it is very popular in the evenings! Absolutely would recommend! If you have room after your main meal, be sure to try the Mille crepe cake! It's so good!

As someone who loves Udon and Japanese food, Machiya has been my go-to place for Niku Udon, Kara-age, and Agedashi Tofu. The owner of the restaurant is really friendly, and the service and food quality has always been consistent. Would recommend!

The store staff are very kind and will talk to you in a friendly manner when they have time. The rice was so delicious that I wondered if it was even better than the Japanese food I eat in Japan!

Delicious food with friendly and attentive staff. The beef and salmon are worth going back for! I reserved a table for two, and we were seated at the worst table they had. The table was located about 3mm from the stair. They should look at rearranging the basement seating area.

Been there couple of times for lunch , never got disappointed, food is great, drinks are amazing and service is top.One of my favourite restaurants.

We’ve been to Machiya twice and liked it the first time, but the second time I asked them to adjust one of the side dishes for my food intolerances since the menu had incomplete details of what was in the dish, and they asked us to pay again for a modified side. I thought this was a bit much in the context of us paying £45 for one dish, and also given I couldn’t have known before they brought it out. Plus, I was asking for some plain cabbage. They also got me the wrong drink order. All around bad service, it seriously ruined the vibe.

Nice little restaurant. Fantastic food, quick service. My wife and I enjoyed it a lot.

Excellent Japanese restaurant in the center of London, from the welcome to the food, we had a great time!

An amazing Japanese restaurant in the heart of London. The location was perfect. Just a few minutes away from Leicester square. My local friends took me there. The place is small and cozy. The chicken katsu was delicious, and the same goes for the meatballs. The service was quick and excellent, the price was great for the value.

Seriously delicious food and really great drinks! We got the chicken and pork katsudon, and the pork kakuni (braised pork belly) to share. Also have to shout out their “Long Jasmine Iced Tea”, which might be the best cocktail I’ve ever had. We reserved a table for around 7:30 on a Friday night and they weren’t crazy busy, but after around 20 minutes it was packed and people were getting turned away left and right, so I definitely recommend the reservations.

The food was heavenly, and the environment is so homely. The staff is so sweet and suggested really good dishes. Thank you, I will be back for sure.

The food was really mediocre which was disappointing because I was expecting more. I had the Kakunidon & just a few bites of the meat & I got bored of the taste. It was just too simple. My friend had the Pork Katsudon which I had a bite of & it was also boring after a few bites. Service was normal & the ambience was nice & quiet since it was a weekday.

The taste is very bad, not Japanese food at all, the meal is small and expensive, the beef is very dry and tasteless, the pork ordered by my friend is very smelly, it may be that the quality of the meat is not good + the processing of the meat is not good. 😊😊If you want to eat Japanese food, go to “eat Tokyo,”😍😍which is near Soho.

A sweet little restaurant with wonderfully cheerful staff who took care of us the whole time! We were early for our reservation which wasn't a problem - and despite a few other people already present, food was served piping hot and surprisingly quickly, especially as we ordered a mix of one main and lots of small plates together. The tonkatsu and agedashi tofu were highlights in particular - but the desserts and coffee we had were also fantastic, espwcially the matcha mille crepe. We'll be back next time we're in London! 😊

Very nice food but they tried to seat us at the bar after we had reserved a table in advance; finally sat us at a table, but the table was small and the seats very hard - low stools with no backs . The matcha crepe cake was a nice dessert.

Food had too much MSG. Staff members were extremely unfriendly. Overall, bad.

I've been to this restaurant 3 times already which is something I usually never do in central London but Machiya's delicious food, Cody environment and extremely friendly and hospitable staff always have me wanting to come back. I look forward to future visits !

The food was very tasty and wonderful. You got what you paid for everything, especially the tonkotsu ramen. Definitely recommended if you're looking for premium quality food. The staff are very kind, courteous and courteous towards customers. I would love to visit again soon.

Excellent Tonkatsu, quick service

My favourite Japanese cafe! I am often in Japan and I can say that the atmosphere here is the same! Everything is very tasty and beautiful! The staff is excellent and polite

AVOID. This is the worst Japanese food that I have ever eaten: we ordered rice bowls - Pork Katsudon and Gyudon. The rice was overcooked and mushy, and had no flavour at all. The pork cutlet was dry and chewy, and served in such large pieces that it was impossible to eat with chopsticks (no other utensils provided). The beef brisket tasted like cheap meat that had been microwaved, again with no flavour. I could not even stomach to finish it. For starter we ordered pickled cucumber and kara-age (fried chicken). For £5.75 we received SIX (6 only) small pieces of cucumber. The kara-age did not arrive as a starter; it was only delivered as a main course & was somehow both dry and greasy at the same time. We have visited Japan and even the food at the convenience stores was better than this. I hope that we were just unlucky.

I visited Machiya for the first time after a recommendation from a Japanese friend and have since become a regular customer. One of the things I particularly like about the food is it is very authentic and tastes like it would in Japan. An example are the katsu curries where the sauce is very much Japanese style and the Tsukune which even comes with the customary egg yolk for dipping. I particularly recommend the katsu curries and large plates and the Mille Crêpe and Matcha Fondant for dessert, although everything I have tried is delicious. The service is also very good. The dishes are served quickly and despite being very busy, the staff are friendly, polite and very responsive. They have Japanese speaking staff, although their English is also excellent based on hearing them speak to other customers. Machiya is a fairly small restaurant and is very busy even on weekdays and so I do recommend making a reservation if possible. I should also point out all the seating is stools and they do not have booths. However, they are accomodating to my needs and give me a table where I could lean against the wall. In summary, I always have a very good dining experience at Machiya and I would definitely recommend a visit if you fancy authentic Japanese food combined with very good customer service.

I went there for lunch on my day off. I had oyakodon and fried chicken, and the soup stock was very effective and it was very delicious. It's been a while since I tasted Japanese food. This is definitely my favorite Japanese food I've had in the UK!

No es mi primer rodeo en Machiya. Mi novio y yo fuimos a Japón el año pasado y este es uno de los únicos lugares en Londres que sabe algo como la comida que comimos allí. Los platos son muy auténticos y deliciosos. Un favorito es el tonkotsu, tan crujiente y lleno de sabor. No podría recomendar más.

Portion size is good, though the food can be a bit more flavourful. It was really difficult to get service throughout the meal.

Lovely place, wonderful food and staff

Rude staff with zero reason. Walked in on a quiet Tuesday at 5 PM, an empty restaurant with no one. and the staff was insistent—borderline aggressive—about making us sit at the bar table. I checked online—plenty of tables available for the time, but they still insisted. Their booking system even demands credit card details, and for some reason the staff pushes so much on booking, coincidence? No explanation and no flexibility. Don’t waste your time; they clearly don’t value customers with that attitude.
