This was our second time here. It's a small restaurant so probably best to book but we've been twice and have been lucky both times to get a table without a booking. Lovely food great atmos.

Really good, authentic tonkatsu! A bit pricey, but usual for Japanese restaurants in London. Came here on a Saturday evening, and despite being quite busy, the food came fast and was tasty. It is a bit away from the crowded area around Leicester Square, so you will have a seat even without reservation! Would come again! What I ordered: Misoshiru Tonkatsu Large Plate Homemade Yuzu Lemonade Total: £26.40

Astonished by the food. We haven’t had eel for a long time so order Unagi Don. The eel was sooo well cooked and the sauce was nicely seasoned. We also ordered beef udon which I will come back for the soup! My LO loves as well. Fried tofu was very finely prepared in a sense that the panko around it was just a thin layer. It’s a fried dish but you don’t feel it’s heavy at all. We ordered 3 dishes for a family of 3 and we think it’s good quantity. For big eaters, you might want to order one more.

The food is amazing! The staff are friend and nice! They recommended us plum sake and advised us to drink with ice as it tend to be on the sweeter end! I tend to find most matcha cake to have their sweetness too overpowering but here you can definitely taste the matcha!! One of the best matcha cake!! Portion is very generous for the unagi don! It’s a small place so would strongly advise to book in advance!

I visited Machiya for the first time after a recommendation from a Japanese friend. I had the Kara-age, the Tonkatsu with rice and the Matcha Fondant. Having lived in Japan, I found everything I ordered to be authentic. The Kara-age was nice and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The Tonkatsu was delicious and definitely comparable to what I had in Japan. The Matcha Fondant was also very good. You can really taste the matcha and I definitely recommend it if you have a sweet tooth. The service was also very good. The dishes I ordered were served quickly and despite being very busy, the manager and young Japanese woman who served me were friendly, polite and very responsive. The young woman even made time to chat to me in Japanese (although her English was excellent based on hearing her speak to other customers). Machiya is a fairly small restaurant and was very busy even for a weekday and so I do recommend making a reservation if possible. I should also point out all the seating is stools and they do not have booths. However, they were accomodating to my needs and gave me a table where I could lean against the wall. In summary, I had a very good dining experience at Machiya and I would definitely recommend a visit if you fancy authentic Japanese food combined with very good customer service.

I will start by saying that this is extremely well priced given its prime location in central London. The food was good but not mind blowing; the pork belly was very fatty, and the broccoli was nothing special; the fried chicken was good, and I’d recommend the miso aubergine. Service was good but quite slow, this is more a place for a long dinner versus a quick dining option. Atmosphere would’ve been nice except for the DELIVEROO and Uber eats drivers turning up every 2 minutes which wasn’t ideal

Came here for "Tonkatsu Pork" and it was great. The taste took me back to Japan. They also have Draught Kirin Beer as well 🍻 The "Pork Katsudon" was very nice with a sheet of thin Japanese egg omelette on top. Very filling . The staff were all very nice and felt very welcomed. For the weekends dinner reservations are recommended. Would come back again! I came here looking for pork cutlet. At the first bite, I felt like I was back in Japan. The egg on top of the katsudon tastes just like I imagined, so I highly recommend it. The eggplant dengaku was also delicious with a strong miso flavor and eggplant flavor. Reservations are recommended on weekend nights. I'll come back later!!

I was given the reason like, we cannot touch customer’s phone, etc. Not sure if there is any rule on this. Long story short, when the waiter help me to charge my phone here. Ordered a beef brisket and chicken katsudon. Both were fine but nothing to write home about and won’t be ordering them again. I would prefer the sliced beef (which was available in previous iterations of the menu) rather than beef brisket but I guess this is personal preference. The sauce of the chicken katsudon was pretty heavy. Quite salty and strong - fine for those with that palette - but definitely not the traditional Japanese taste (or to my taste). The most disappointing dish was the chicken katsu curry. The rice used was not Japanese sushi rice but more the standard long grain rice. It’s not obligatory to have sushi rice I guess but I would have expected a better quality of rice at this standard / price range of restaurant. The curry was tasteless (very watery) and the chicken tasted like it was just cooked from frozen and fried directly in the katsu crumbs. Overall I think the quality of ingredients used was very poor rather than the actual cooking. The prices are on the mid to pricey end. It’s one of those places where if you had a great meal you would say that was good and it was worth the price but if it was bad then you will never go back again as it was not worth it. There was hardly any service because you order and pay by scanning the QR code. Our QR code didn’t work and we reported this to the waitress. She indicated she would fix it and she assumed that she did fix it but it still wouldn’t work. We would have appreciated a confirmation from her that she was under the impression that it was fixed so we could tell her immediately that it wasn’t. We waited a while longer before reaching out and I also did an iPhone reaet lol. Anyway just shows the tech is not great. We heard another table also had an issue with the QR code ordering. It seems the restaurant needs to release the table so that table can actually view the menu and order but the releasing process is manual (and in this case doesn’t work) and not automatic. Bit odd and wasn’t a great start. Makes you question why we are paying the 10% service charge if the service was to just give us some tap water, bring us our dishes. and address unsuccessfully the QR code issue. I also wasn’t too pleased when there was the additional tip option on paying the bill. Not sure if they are under different management from the last time I visited. I see the restaurant has some solid reviews so hopefully my experience was just a one off.

This was an experience that made me really question Google reviews. This restaurant is not a 4.6. The seafood is of a shockingly low farmed standard. My wife got the salmon bowl. We’d never seen so much inedible fat on salmon, and it wasn’t cooked properly. When we questioned the waiter, we were told it was correct despite having some pieces cooked thru and some pieces inedible. They did take the inspected pieces and put them in the oven to return to her though. They were still inedible. I got the “king prawn” bowl. Neither of us could finish our dishes. The seafood was not nice at all and there was way too much sauce used for the bowls. The karaage was nicely fried and juicy but SUPER salty. It was a massive let down overall. A one and done visit for me. I gave 2 stars because the service wasn’t bad. The waitress was nice.
