Ma Kellys Fish and Chip Restaurant in Portsmouth

Chips had been under the lamps for a while. Poor staff were run ragged. Some customers were getting a bit vocal due to wait times. Maybe we caught them on a bad day. We will go back as we had heard good things previously.

Highly enjoyable experience because aswell as the lunch menu of fish and chips being delicious and good value for money, we felt the service was first class. There were approx 18 in our group, and food arrived hot and promptly served by friendly and efficient staff. (Portsmouth Salvation Army Knit & Natter group)

The Cod was the so delicious, haven't had such a good taste for a long long time. Well done chef.

Alas, they have changed the Fish Cakes for the worse for the last time...! They did this once before and I complained and then all of a sudden the old Fish Cakes returned. My friend was eating these and was not at all impressed, whereas he used to be. The Plaice was fine, although I do wonder if they are making the batter more wet, and therefore great holes are appearing on the surface, and talking of water stuff down, the Curry Sauce was so watered down it wouldn't stick to anything - not even the damn fork...!!! That's it, we shan't be going there again - sorry Gill...!!!

Fantastic service as always. This is the best " Plaice " around for fish & chips locally. The food is always freshly cooked, piping hot & great value too. I think the reason why the courier was late it's bcoz the cams hall roundabout was bumper to bumper. unfortunately my fish & chips were cold .but I have put it back into box and reheat tomorrow. Normally the shop always have the best Fish & Chips in Hampshire.

Poor service,staff casually dressed,one serving food wearing a wooly hat,poor selection of food,only fish available was haddock,my large portion was two small pieces.people being turned away and told restaurant closed at 6.45 pm. All in all not a pleasant experience. I will be surprised if the restaurant survives unless changes are made.

Friendly service and nice size meal for the money you pay. Consistent quality, had takeout order here few times, definitely worth going if you fancy good fish and chips.

Just been to mother Kelly’s for the first time in years and I just want to say I’m absolutely disgusted in how poor it’s got , years ago it was by far the best about now it’s not worth the hassle , price or drive to get it , the chips are dripping in grease and under cooked so there mostly not edible and the prices for the food quality is shocking , if you used to be a big fan of this place I would say don’t even attempt to go again after years cause it’s nothing but disappointment , absolutely shocking and will not be going back

It's ok. Bit of a confused ordering system. It's chip shop, why oh why would I want an app to order or a loyalty card? Just nonsense Food isn't bad, certainly not great but edible enough. Not cheap either. All in all id probably give this one a miss

Fish was dry and tasteless. Chips were of same standard. Inedible and thrown away. Waste of money even at half price. Will not return.

We stopped by this chippy before driving back home after a couple of days away. The service was very good and food was delicious.

The best fish and chips for miles around.

1st time there was not good a lady frying under cooked chips, I had a fish and chip shop over 14 years, nothing against female fryers but get it right. the last 2 times been really good, good chippy chips, white flaky fish with crispy batter, excellent value at half price, it's a shame got so expensive over the past couple of years, to cover costs.

Utter chaos tonight. No cod left only place with 50% promotion. No organisation with walk ins and pre orders. Chips were Horrible. We were supposed to have 2 cods which we pre ordered they gave us 1 plaice and 1 cod. Had to pay for chips we could not get our free ones on line with the code.? What a shambles and horrible meal

It’s a shame. This was our go to chippie. Fresh glossy cod, crispy batter and perfect chips EVERY TIME. The friendliest service too. Not anymore. I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt on three recent occasions, hoping each time it was just an off night. Sadly not. Batter fine. COD slightly dry texture. Chips - ok. That’s it - ok. Used to be stand out, now just a little bit pricy for nothing special. Won’t be going back. I believe they were taken over. Coincidence. I don’t know.

Preferred it when it was Ma Kellys but it is still one of the be fish and chips place for Portsmouth.

Popped in for takeaway haddock and chips. Had a good natter with the two lovely ladies, Gill and Nicky who were serving. Really friendly and welcoming and the haddock and chips were superb as were the onion rings. Piping hot and the batter was sooooo crispy! Not a soggy thing about it! Thank you for saving me the hassle of cooking! 😁

This place is just on a sinking ship just when you think it can’t get any worse not only is the food dry,cold,hard but they don’t wash there hands touching money then completing your food orders, sweat dripping from the fryer going into your food errrrrr horrid They tell you to contact them which I did and sent 5 emails to be ignored no wonder this chip shop is going down the pan customer service and food dreadful don’t waste your money

The food was great and plentiful. Laura served us and was friendly and helpful. Our food was ready in good time. I would recommend the haddock and the hallumi burger. I will definitively be returning. The bus stop is close and there is parking outside. The restaurant is clean as are the loos. It is suitable for everyone including families. Best fish and chips I have had in Portsmouth Thank you. 🙏

Went whilst on holiday, for nostalgia firstly as I visited a few times as a kid. Food was perfect, kids both loved it. Service great, parking right outside too

Dined here last night, the lady that served me was lovely. Friendly and polite. I went for the Cod & Chips, lovely piece of fish with proper chips. My only criticism would be there is no pepper on the tables, not your usual condiment but would be a nice addition to the mushy peas.

we tried to eat at your place today 2 families, unfortunately we arrived 8 minutes before opening, but the staff were bored waiting the clientele probably wouldn't come at all, they were very unfriendly and told us to wait outside because it just opens after 8 minutes, I mention that we frequent these fish and chips quite often, but it was the last and the first time we will try to serve a meal there... unprofessional behavior!

Food was not very warm when it had arrived and the portion sizes seem to be getting smaller and smaller each time I order from here I feel. just glad the curry sauce pot stayed hot enough to enjoy

First time using them and it will be the last the fish batter was extremely soggy, you really don't get very many chips no lemon offered or tartar sauce and it was very expensive. ( I have seen your reply and as I said I WILL NOT be coming in again. The two fish and chip shops in Portchester are far superior but unfortunately they do not open on a Sunday).

Awful meal - the fish was cold and dry and only 25% of the chips were edible, which were also cold and dry. Very disappointing.

Can’t fault the fish & chips. We have turned into a regular visitor - takeaway - for a fish supper to eat at portsdown hill (easy now!). Great portions, tasty fish and really excellent chips not remotely greasy. Recommended!
