Medium sized, independent izakaya style place on Broughton St. Quite dark and plain inside. But the food and service were absolutely fantastic. Delicious and original cocktails, very friendly waiting staff who were quick to help with anything on the menu, and a wide range of clientele from couples to young families to those with older children. Style is Japanese sharing plates - great balance of meat, fish and veg options, and mostly gluten free. They recommend 3-4 plates per person - we ordered 3 plates each and this was a bit too much - portions are generous. The rice and the potato dishes in particular are large.

Four of us were absolutely blown away by Lucky Yu this evening. Not one plate we were served lacked anything! Everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely packed with flavour. Service was friendly, helpful and really attentive with water being filled across the evening and constant checks on the table. I’ve given 5 stars but have two small negatives to mention. Firstly, the cocktail we tried was £10.50 which came with a big cube of ice, we pulled the ice out to find lucky if there was 50ml of liquid in the glass… I wasn’t overly impressed. Secondly, I thought some of the prices were quite steep? Yes the food was delicious, but for example the prawn bao bun was £9.50 for one, this seemed quite a lot to me. These are just wee things though. The food, service and atmosphere was fantastic. I think it speaks volumes the restaurant opens at 5pm and it was full by 5:15pm! Thoroughly enjoyed it, would definitely return.

We had a nice waiter who took food allergies seriously (gluten and sesame). We ordered almost everything on the menu. The kitchen had to make changes as they use a lot of sesame. Appreciated. The cocktails were good. The trout was very good. The rest was decent. I recommend it if you are in the area. Go early because it fills up and the wait gets longer for your food.

Prices seem quite high but portion sizes are decent. The menu suggests 3-4 dishes per person but 5 between 2 people would be better I think and I can eat a lot. Karaage chicken and the potatoes were great but everything else was average. Probably wouldn’t rush back due to the prices but glad to have tried it

As someone who lives locally I think this may well be the best meal I've had in Edinburgh. The place is simple, unpretentious, cosy, and unlike so many newer restaurants in Edinburgh the acoustics are excellent so I could actually hear what my wife was saying. They recommended 6-8 small plates for a couple. We opted for 6, and it was plenty of food. I am always asked by this app to provide photos. Unfortunately once again I set about the plates like a starving labrador and by the time I remembered about taking a photo the table resembled a war zone. Excellent staff, excellent food, superb venue. Can't fault anything.

I came with a friend for a birthday/new job/engagement celebration lunch and we had the most amazing time! The atmosphere was great, the food was delicious, the servers were fab, the cocktails were stunning. Everything was really reasonably priced, and we both went in starving, ordered 5 plates between us and left with food still on the plates (not that we didn’t try to eat it!). It can be tough to find restaurants that have good vegan options as well as meat options, and this was a meal that totally did both. Thank you, Lucky Yu!

Popped here on the off-chance of a table for pre-theatre bite. We were lucky to get a table. Very cute restaurant. You are snugly sitting next to other diners like peas in a pod. This gives it a good buzz but I can see why they need to shift times to maximise the space. It is probably not the place for a first date, small kids or massive party meal. The food was delicious and well presented. The menu is focused on Asian cuisine and strong on the fresh garlic and ginger which was fab. Although it was busy there was just one person on service who was lovely and got us out the door in time.

Was really looking forward to lucky yu reading the reviews across the board! Unfortunately it fell way short for us. There was a whole bunch of things. Before arriving the restaurant called us in the afternoon to bump us from 8.30 to 9.00, which isn't much, but did mean we were the finishing our food with one remaining table finishing up drinks at a point. Not really a big deal, but a bit of a bummer when it comes to vibe, especially in such an intimate place. Anyway, that's one. Another smaller thing is that whilst the restaurant is BYOB, that is charged at £10 per couple, which is the most I've ever seen in Edinburgh, and I hadn't seen mentioned across the web, so just wanna note here. When you split one bottle of wine, you're then paying more than a licensed restaurant once you've added in purchasing the thing, which is a rarity for BYOB and largely negates the perks of a BYOB place. The food was hit and miss. Lucky Yu's social media is full of awesome gyoza shots, of perfectly cooked, slightly browned parcels. Our ones were quite stodgy, nearing a raw feel. Like, the lamb was perfectly cooked, say, but as soon as you soon a bite out of the gyoza, the rest of the filling immediately fell out in full as it really hadn't spent enough time cooking with the gummy parcel. Elsewhere, the wings and katsu sando were perfectly cooked, but came completely drowning in sauce to the point it was pouring everywhere and you couldn't taste anything else. The table beside us ordered something but were informed it was sold out. Maybe it was the same dish, but we were told our first choice order was out, too. At least this means things are fresh, though! As above, the place is super cosy and that's a major perk. With house music pumping, it's a really fab atmosphere. Unfortunately, even with only 20 covers/4 tables, parts of our order (the wings and smacked cucumber) were forgotten about. When we gave a shout to our lovely server about the two dishes that hadn't come, we got an apology and soon enough the wings were out. We never got the smacked cucumber despite ordering it and then asking about it half an hour later. Honestly, we had so much food we didn't mind too much in the end anyway. It was just missed. No big. However, when the bill came, there it was, charged and accounted for. At this point we were tired and the place was quiet and we had already asked twice for the dish and didn't want to cause further fuss so we just paid, tipped and went on our way. Just super disappointed from a super hyped, cute place.

Each item was delicious in its own way — so much flavor, freshness and just the right level of spiciness. I also appreciated that they had a wide range of vegetarian options so that I could choose between lots of available choices. A small but perfectly formed place that I was taken to on a weekend trip from London and immediately fell in love with. They get the foundations just right - karaage chicken that hits the spot, reliably good gyoza - but it's the more unusual menu decisions that make Lucky Yu special. The chicken katsu "sandwich" is a work of evil genius, the gyoza fillings extend to the likes of braised lamb with toasted cumin and a "dirty burger" (both outstanding in very different ways), and the addition of tangy kimchi meant even the fried rice was a highlight. And that was without getting to try the likes of the lobster and chorizo bao. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu on my next trip!

Tiny place (booking recommended for weekend) with a short but very diverse menu with a few vegetarian options. This is what I would call fusion - I tried some gyoza with smoked cheese and the veg bao...really nice!
