Popped in for a bit to eat and last time we came here, we had our dog with us and sat outside. This time we were seated up stairs and it’s clean and staff very attentive and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The Yorkshire breakfast was lovely and a bit too much for me, but the poached eggs were the star, perfect and thank you.

We visited the City and came across this lovely little cafe restaurant by chance. Varied menu- choose your main dish then 3 salads (all delicious) to accompany it. Catered well for gluten free options- thank you. Myself, my daughter and two granddaughters were served quickly and caringly. We would certainly return.

Menu too fussy and poncey. Nothing simple. Everything had loads of salads and veg. It was very expensive. We wanted to go for lunch but couldn't find anything to eat, everything was pounced up and miscellaneous items added. We settled for tea and cake but we wanted sandwiches but again menu too fussy. Went 2 years ago and menu was great. Would not recommend. Go to shambles cafe for good simple everyday food

Our family of five adults and two children, one coeliac child and one adult stopped by for tea on a busy bank holiday. Although they were very busy we were seated in an upstairs room on our own. The 'cafe' is filthy, the food in the window is days old and the fridge is not to tempurature so all the salads are off. All food and "fresh soup and juice" is store bought from tesco. The 'chefs' can be heard from downstairs shouting at the teenage waiters like children. This disgusting, dusty, moldy place is lucky only the elderly dine here (since they have no taste buds and poor vision) this awful place and the way it is run is a reflection of the the owner. Chris.

Stopped by on our last day in York alerted them to an allergy and was given the menu. Selected an item when did show the allergy in when it come to ordering the waitress said that allergy is present. So I asked why it's not listed on the sheet. She said "I'm not the chef" that's no excuse. People can be seriously unwell and even die from allergies.

Cute cafe with nice foods. Ordered: (1) soup of the day (meat), apple crumbles with vanilla ice cream, blackberry scone, lemonade and breakfast tea. All that for £24. Reasonable pricing. Has two floors so more seatings available. Upstairs was slightly quiet and also cushioned seats available over wooden chairs, this was ideal for my poor back. Situated in the central so it is very convenient. Then I walked to the Viking exhibition which was very close.

Not being a local to York, we decided to stick to what we knew by choosing Lucky Days for an early breakfast. The service was really good and staff were attentive. The quality of food was decent enough for the price range. In all, for two of us, it came to around £33 with two coffees and an apple juice. My only gripe is the overall condition of the restaurant itself - it's very dirty. Everything is worn out, especially all the chairs with all the dirt under the cushions. Otherwise I had a pleasant enough experience.

45 minute wait for food and defensive/rude staff when we pointed out that our 1 year old baby son and 5 year old son were getting very hungry waiting for food (not to mention us, the parents). The person we spoke to was very defensive and walked off in a huff, very unprofessional. Apparently they lost our order and had to start it from scratch after over half an hour of waiting. Travelled to York on a day out. First place we came across was this cafe. We arrived just before 9am and the door was open so myself and my party went in and sat down. After about 5 minutes a lady appeared carrying crockery and very abruptly proceeded to tell us that they were closed. I pointed out that it was quite literally minutes to opening time and could we wait. The lady was very rude and told us no we would have to leave and go back when they were open, which at this point was about 2-3 minutes before they opened. We found this lady to be very rude and ignorant and could seriously use some training in customer service !

Disappointing experience here today. Upon sitting down it became quite quickly evident that this place needs a good clean and needs some TLC. We had cake and coffee and the cake was dry and the coffee mug was chipped. The cleanliness of the water glass was also questionable. So we visited on Saturday 2nd March 2023, at first it looked like a nice little independent cafe from the outside so we were happy to go in, it is spread out over 3 different floors. The adult sandwiches were ok but nothing special, definitely not worth the price. The children's jacket potatoes were not enjoyable for my little ones, sat in a pool of salad dressing so as you can imagine, most children would be unhappy. Now here is the worst part, hearing the owner/manager talk down to the staff, belittling them in front of customers was shocking. I felt sorry for the member of staff as you could see she was embarrassed to be treated that way, this did not stop there. We ordered children's drinks and when they came, the drinks were wrong. To bring the following into context, my children are 7 and 8. The member of staff was informed that the drinks were wrong and told us that the ones we ordered were out of stock, while talking to the children to see what they want, the member of staff said directly to my children 'do you want them or not'. This is obviously a result of the way that the owner/manager talks to the members of staff and the staff have in turn use that to talk to my children in that appalling and completely unacceptable way. It looks to me that the owner/manager has hired a lot of young staff looking for work, to keep costs down and treats them with resentment. ALSO OVER PRICED I will not be returning

I usually don't like reviews. But anyway here goes. First impression of this place is. Far enough it was very busy. First thing we noticed was. Young lad dropped a teaspoon on the floor and picked it up. We said that spoons been on the floor. He just put it aside and it got put on the tray and sent out to whoever table it was for? That spoon should have been placed in the sink. He must have been new. But even so. It's common sense not to use cutlery from the floor. Next thing I noticed was lad who was cleaning table before we sat down. Picks up dog bowl from floor. Empties it in the sink where you wash your hands etc. And then sprays the table. He should have washed his hands first before spraying the table. Not very hygienic. Food was good. Bit pricey for a bit of bread and Coronation Chicken. Won't visit again. Outside this place looks lovely with the food at the front. And far enough it was good food. But I can imagine that in York itself it is going to be pricey.

Popped in for an ad hoc lunch the other day and was really surprised at this place. What a little gem!!!! We were shown to a beautiful little private seating area and made to feel special. The initial greeting was warm and kind; and the service throughout was attentive but not intrusive. Caring but not obsequious. I absolutely loved it. The food….. God the food…… Every single thing was a taste explosion. I never eat my salad first, but I chose a delicious slow cooked pulled pork panini, which came with a choice of three salads. The coleslaw was so tasty and unusual I obsessively destroyed it before even trying anything else. I had a roasted carrot and chickpea salad which was amazing and a Morroccan cous cous. Thy sell my favourite Assam tea, the only place I’ve found that does. High grown strong malty tea, picked on the banks of the Brahmaputra river in India- stunning cuppa! Then for pudding I had the home cooked Yorkshire fruit cake, served with a respectable wedge of Wensleydale Cheese- you really can’t get any more perfectly Yorkshire. It was beautiful. The flowers on the table were real and fresh, even the butter portions were delicately hand wrapped like little sweets. Their attention to detail was absolutely admirable. I’ve promised myself to visit often, especially eyeing up the Eggs Benedict for breakfast next time. I now have a favourite place to eat when I’m lunching in York. Please go, you won’t be disappointed. Especially if you like the simple things in life done incredibly well. A gem of a place.

Jacob, the server could not have been kinder. He was very prompt and concerned about our meal, which is more than I can say about whoever is running this place. The food was awful. And that is being very kind. We ordered 1 Soup entree, 1 Panini entree with the 3 salads, and a Lasagna Entree, and that was with the standard salad. The Panini entree was great. Full plate with nice salads. As for my lasagna, it was a 2x2 inch piece of lasagna, and it came with 2 small bites of salad. How appalling. £13, I was in shock. How do you offer this? On top of that, the plate it was served on was a lunch plate, not a standard dinner plate. A proper plate with a little more salad would have been nicer. Salad is very cheap. Most of the diners were not eating lunch, just teas and coffees and a few desserts red flag we should have seen. Never will we go back, and I hope they step up their game and not take advantage of other visitors. It's not a good example of 1st time York visitors.

When we sat down we were greeted to a dirty table with a mixture of stains a crumbs, similar to what you’d expect at a McDonalds. Right beside me was a windowsill that had clearly never seen a cloth and was somewhat littered with crumbs, plant matter, hair and other indistinguishable matter. The food was okay, although not revived well by other members of our party I enjoyed my soup, it is worth nothing that the soup does only come with half a slice of bread so if you’re feeling peckish you may want to ask for more upfront! We were also not served cutlery, and when it arrive, we were left with forks for ice cream and soup for a period of time… I will add although a dirty crumby windowsill isn’t the end of the world, it is right next to the table and when you notice it you naturally start looking for other things, it takes 2 seconds to take a bit of pride in your environment, and it can very easily put a person on edge thinking about what the kitchen or staff areas must be like. The building is old and floor is wonky but that is just character, it’s a lovely setting.

There is quite an extensive menu, with very clearly marked allergens, good for people who are vegan/vegetarian or have an allergy to milk/wheat, etc. I decided on an open sandwich, which was £13.00 something?, sorry forgotten exact amount, which you get to choose 3 different salads to go with it. I had shredded ham, mashed eggs, and cherry tomatoes, with a cucumber salad, beetroot one, and a tomato one. My sister had the Tuna open sandwich with a larger helping of the tomato salad as she couldn't decide on any any of the others. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere is very nice. I have usually had a good experience when I come here, it's my little treat when I visit my friend in university but today I was treated like dirt. We went in and had a server say is a table for two and when we said we wanted to take out his demeanor change and told us we had to wait outside in the rain for our order which he said he'd bring out to us. We waited outside for about 20minutes till I started to complain very loudly outside the window because people who just walked in got there orders before us. The last 2 times before this were great I get the same tart each time and the last time the server was lovely she asked if I wanted it warm because it tasted nicer and made the perfect hotchocolate (they cut our slices in half from teh window). If you have cctv I am happy for you to check to verify this information because we wouldn't want to have this experience happen again to anyone else. From now on when I come to visit I will no longer visit this establishment due to the poor customer service I experience today in the bad weather. They said to ask for as much bread as you want, but gave me less than half a bowl of soup to eat with it 😂 £5.50 for a sharing dish of roast sweet potato wedges- essentially less than one small sweet potato cut into pieces! Raised this with the waitress, and she said she would check, ‘but we do have 3 floors!’ Totally irrelevant, I don’t order a roast dinner I ordered a panini! Another waiter insisted we hadn’t been waiting over 30mins, their attitude absolutely stank! Customer service was none existent and downright rude, would definitely not recommend

Wow !! So we stumbled across this place and were pleasantly surprised at how lovely it was. Staff where nothing but kind and the food was spot on, just about £24 for a breakfast for 2 so not bad at all. 100 % would visit agin if in the city

A bit pricey for what you get. The ground floor is very crowded with not enough space for staff to pass by to get upstairs. Vegetarian breakfast included frittata which sounded nice but the slice was very small.

Located so close to the Minster and the Shambles. Really good service. Lovely waitress with big smile. We sat upstairs where the floor is wonky.. Nice experience. But the food was just a no!!! Honestly not a good experience. Only 1 of the 6 salads was decent. They catch with a nice menu but is not worth it. My gf did not finish her plate and I had some because was hungry. Portioning was not great neither.

Food was sublime, the staff were really nice and it had a lovely chilled atmosphere. Busy for a cafe mid morning on a friday. Would absolutely recommend.

The location is great but the rest of it dreadful. The food was awful and the service was as slow as a snail. They were only fast when we had to pay. The toilets were unhygienic with toilet paper rolls on the floor and a stench of piss.

Worst panini ever, hardly any filling and when pointed out to staff was told yeah that’s how it is. For £13.95, it’s a rip off

We have visited here every time we have visited York, which is fairly local to use Last time wasn’t great but we decided it was a blip. However, yesterday was worse. We tried to sit outside but the tables were broken and rickety- just just due to the uneven path, which we would have understood. We moved inside and waited 10 minutes for a table, though 3 were free right by us. Orders were taken in an ad hoc basis, no regard to who had arrived first. Eventually we requested to place our order. Yes, the staff tried their best and food was tasty- though the salad portions are now tiny. The organisation was chaotic! We had to ask for cutlery, butter and still didn’t have a teaspoon. Our drinks arrived 10 minutes after our food ( and half an hour after ordering) and only because we said it wasn’t good enough. The young couple next to us had eaten their food and still waited another 20+ minutes for their drinks. I wish I had their patience! I really don’t know what has gone wrong!

Upon arrival, friendly welcoming from an Irish lady, showed us upstairs and then service soon went down hill. Not friendly, no life in them. Decor dirty and damp walls. Came over instantly without time to order so had to send them away. Ordered food, pulled pork panini and chicken chorizos skewer. Pulled pork was very watery, not meaty at all, coleslaw was dull and dry, latte was Luke warm and milky, apple juice was nice. I could almost say one of the worst meals we’ve ever had eating out. Staff not interested, never once asked us how our meals were. Would not recommend and certainly will not be back.

I love this place— really good food. But, it REALLY annoys me that you can’t have a scone without clotted cream and jam already on it. I don’t eat cream, so just wanted butter, but they don’t keep any aside for people who don’t want all that stuff on. We’re grown ups. We’re capable of cutting our own scone and spreading things on it!

New find for us in York. We were looking for a good lunch spot that was a little bit different. An excellent and interesting menu and very good service. We were lucky and were able to sit outside in late summer sun. OK it’s not Betty’s but still very good well worth a visit

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
