We ventured in for a coffee & a cake. When we got sat at the table we were told its was only plain simple coffee they could give us due to the coffee machine breaking down. At that point we should have left but as we were already sat down we felt embarrassed to leave at that point! The coffee wouldn’t have been bad if it was at least hot. Awful & bitter even with milk added. We had Carrot cake & Chocolate fudge cake, both looked & tasted cheap & bought in/ready prepared they were awfully sweet. Felt very disappointed even the staff who collected the plates from the table didn’t check in to ask if everything was ok even though half the cake & coffee was left over. We should have gone somewhere else.

Beautiful soup but very unhygienic premises! The food was lovely, Thai chicken, perfectly cooked! The cafe itself however left a lot to be desired. The room upstairs was very dirty and the toilet was cringeworthy. Staff were lovely though!

We decided to eat here today after a trip to York. It was pouring down and was convenient near M&S (that cafe was heaving so decided not to eat there) We were given a warm welcome with someone explaining the menu. We ordered 1 tea. 1 Diet Coke and a glass of tap water. I then ordered an open sandwich (a sandwich in my opinion is 2 pieces of bread not 1 slice) hence why I ordered it with a choice of 3 salads but I only wanted 2 thus was £13.00 I watched the girl with the drinks, a medium size glass with a lot of ice and then she opened a bottle of Coke that was half empty and poured it into the glass. When she delivered our drinks I asked her why she only poured an amount into the glass from a half empty bottle, she said that’s how we serve it not by the bottle, this glass half full of ice was £2.90 - I told her I thought it was appalling she said NOTHING! The food arrived with a slither of bread with tuna and cucumber and tomatoes but NOT a sandwich! To be fair the food was very tasty and very fresh but NOT a ‘sandwich’ and NOT worth £13! I challenged the lady who was tending to our bill and she offered another glass of Coke which we took advantage of. Be aware of the ‘open sandwich’ and glass of Coke! Just not worth it. First and last time here and we visit York often!

Due to having a dog, I did some research before heading to York. Lucky Days was the first option I came across when looking. After wandering around, and scoping out a few other places, we ended up at one of the Lucky Days (there are 3 in town). We felt like it was a proper classic cafe, with no frills. We ended up eating here twice during our stay. Both times we were quickly sat and order taken. My husband had the full breakfast twice, while I had the egg benedicts and then the American pancakes on a different day. We both enjoyed our food, which didn't break the bank either.

We were out in York with friends and were looking for a coffee and cake and came across this tearoom. We were given the last table downstairs by the door, not initially realising there was an upstairs, being by the door we were constantly having to ask people to close the door as it was a cold windy day, which was a pain. However, they had a good selection of cakes and the teas and coffees were good if a little expensive.

Being local I have been to the cafe several times for coffee but this time I was taking my friend for lunch. I ordered the pulled ham open sandwich and my friend tried to order the chicken one. However, she doesn’t like mayo etc and wanted it plain. The waitress said it couldn’t be done. We asked if they could do a plain cheese sandwich and my friend was offered the kids menu! She changed her order to a scone. When my open sandwich arrived I was surprised to see it was one narrow sliver of bread, about 3cm wide. Surely a sandwich means two slices. I said I didn’t want the salads but was still charged the full £16 for the sandwich. Extortionate!! I could have had a full, cooked main meal for that elsewhere. Coffee fine, food grossly overpriced!

The food choices looked great in the window and on the menu but that’s where it ends. We ordered two ‘Open sandwiches’ supposedly on focaccia bread at £13.25 each with a choice of three salad options. When it arrived there was a thin slice of what I would describe as toasted sourdough topped with the chosen Coronation chicken and Tuna. The tuna was fine but the coronation chicken was very dry and the portion size for the money was paltry. This was accompanied by a side order sweet potato wedges with a dip at £5.50 which were soggy and had clearly just been microwaved. This with two small pots of tea came to £38.70. On paying the waitress was quick to indicate that I could leave a tip…..seriously? Had we ventured a few doors down we could have had fresher, tastier food at Pret A Manger for half the price. Will not be visiting again, way overpriced for the quality on offer, even for York.

Really great chippy. The large fish was massive. Its a bit pricey but otherwise ok. Not much waiting time depending on the day/time.

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
