I good place to taste Belgian beers

One of the loveliest Belgian beer places in London. Huge number of beers available, nice atmosphere and good food. Definitely worth visiting.

Went on Sunday early and it was quiet. Burger was good, my friend had the famed Moules & Frites and was very impressed. Excellent beer selection, including a few taster options. Staff were excellent, especially with kids, and their menu was good.

Over £30 for three drinks. That's all I'll say.

Very cosy bar with a nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and a huge selection of beers. Food was delicious and the portions were good size as well. A little bit pricey even with London measures, but worth it. Would definitely visit again.

Seleccionamos este restaurante ya que era un poco diferente de lo habitual. Tuvimos los Moules que eran muy buenos. Como era una ocasión especial, nos dimos un capricho con una botella de vino, pensamos que el £ 30 era un poco caro, pero nos quedamos un poco sorprendidos cuando lo buscamos en Internet y encontramos la misma botella al por menor en £ 8. 75 ! Estoy seguro de que estaban comprando al por mayor, por lo que el margen supera con creces el 300 %. La situación negativa fue más allá ya que luego cargaron un 12. Cargo por servicio del 5 %. Tiene que llegar un momento en el que la hostelería pare esta práctica, está muy mal.

In a heatwave be a decent place to cool down! Food below average but this place is damp and cold. Too tight to put the heating on. Avoid at all costs if you're after a warm welcome!

Belgian Outlet in the heart of Drury Lane. Disappointing in that we booked to take advantage of the pre theatre menu that is advertised on the website, Monday-Friday 4pm-7pm, to be told once sat down and with drinks that that they 'weren't doing that at the moment' without any other explanation. Being awkwardly British we just accepted that, though imagine others might have pushed the point a little more (we were hungry and didn't have the energy to go somewhere else). We ate anyway, food was hot and tasty. Beer was good but eye-wateringly expensive, even for London. £13.50/pint for an IPA - taster selections were £15 for 3x1/3 pints and were brought out with no explanation of which was which (most places like this at least label them or explain what you're drinking). All in all 3/5, good food let down by pricing and service.

Great beer from a massive selection. Staff were brilliant and knowledge. Good all round. Just go there and be amazed.

This was recommended. 5 mins from Covent Garden tube. It’s actually got a great vibe and look. We went on a Sunday and it got busy but not too much so. We could hear ourselves talk which is always a plus. We had reserved (they charge you a £10 deposit) and got a great corner table. Mussels (mariniere and njuda sausage and fennel) were tasty and generous portions . Mussels still tender and soft. The bread was a welcome addition to soak up the the sauce. V filling. The white fries could be slightly more well cooked and crispy. We asked for butter for our bread and that made it even better. However the steamed broccoli was overdone and lacking in flavour and I works have liked the sweet potato fries to have been more plentiful. 4 for food but 5 for overall experience.

Love the beers on draught, and the bitterballen and the bratwurst were both absolutely delicious! The young man who served us was very helpful and polite. We will definitely come again!

Best place to try some new, good Belgium beers and drinks.

I first came to the Lowlander over a year ago, I thought the place was good value but this time around I was very disappointed. The portions now are not generous at all. I remember having some mussels the first time, there was some wine sauce in the pan, this time we only got mussels, much less than the first time and hardly any sauce. The burgers the kids ordered were tiny, they looked like home made ones with Tesco burger buns. The chips were greasy and only a tiny pot of them. The rest of the food we ordered was in the same lines. How can you charge £15 for a burger like that? The beer selection is good but again, pricey for a draught beer. I will never come back, very disappointed!

EDIT OCT 2024: Prices are insane, especially bottles (£11 for a bottle of Chimay bleue) and glasses are not filled properly (e.g., my Kwak glass didn’t have any beer - not even foam - on the top 10cm). Taste of draft beers was a bit off as well. Very disappointed this place is going downhill… I won’t be back and will be going to Dovetail instead, where prices are ~30% (!) lower (e.g., £7.5 for a Chimay bleue) — Great selection of Belgian beers (although overpriced (£8-9 for a beer!) - De Hems is cheaper). Service isn’t great - we almost got turned away as it was “bookings only”, but nobody ever came so the bar was empty on a Thu night… not sure how they run this business but it clearly feels suboptimal. If you have many tables available, maybe let people use them?!

Good atmosphere, great background music, not the elevator music like kind. They have a large selection of beers, wines and cocktails.

Went here with friends last night at 8pm. Server was unhelpful, service slow. Food took ages to arrive and was mediocre. Items had to be requested more than once. Nothing was offered - no ketchup or mayo for fries (this is a Belgian restaurant!). We asked for vinegar for the chips and it came in a bowl!. They also ran out of moules (at 8pm in a Belgian restaurant????). The server just came back and announced 'no moules'. They didn't apologise or even bring a menu so we could choose something else. The restaurant was busy. I doubt it will stay that way.

Favourite spot for a drink in London! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, amazing knowledge on Belgium beer. Vedrana always looks after us fabulously. Could not recommend enough! :-)

Big fan of Belgian beer and joined a friend for some drink and a meal at Lowlander. The food was really good and the service friendly.

Have been coming to this place every time I'm in London since 2010 when I first found it with some friends while living abroad. Great atmosphere, great beer, great food, great staff, great location. Can't recommend enough.

to be honest, you cant really say there was service. A female waiter was friendly who organized a table for us since we didn’t have a reservation. The restaurant looks nice with the first impression. My friend ordered kwak, froth was like 4/5 of the glass. It doesn’t look right and the server said it’s normal as the froth will settle. You know there is a line at the beer glass to indicate the volume?! Their pour didn’t even hit the line. Servers didn’t have knowledge about their product, they brought us wrong beer (dubbel or tripel) for a few times. I felt sorry for the owner tbh. The staff were just having the wrongly opened beer behind the bar like no one was watching. Well it’s a nice premises at a great location with vast options of Belgium beer, both draught and in bottles. However it was just a terrible experience. No wonder the place was not full on a Saturday night. Did I mention their “Belgium” waffle taste like something from Sainsbury’s? It’s so tough with cheap chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream and some blueberries.

Would have expected a more professional approach to pouring the beer.. but my 1/2 pint kwak is not full, well yes, it’s full of foam 😂 Also got the wrong order for three times .. hope there would be better training so you know what beer you serve! Waffle is super rock-hard, seems over-microwaved

This restaurant and bar in the centre of London is a wonderful Belgian establishment filled with belgian bottled beer and from the tap. I'm so glad that I booked a table, this place was packed. If you book, you'll have to pay a fee of £10.00. I think to stop people from canceling last minute. The lowlander reminded me of my time in Bruges. I asked for something that I enjoyed in Bruges and low and behold they had it so you know this Grand Cafe is authentic 😊 I had a few bottles of the Guillotine and chips and a burger which was nice. The staff are really nice and friendly, they really took their time to explain the menu. If you're in the area and you're thirsty, come here.

Nice beer selection which is on the pricey side (not surprising given the location). 12.5% service charge is laughable given the sub-par service and cost of the beer (£8 for a pint...)

Amazing selection of Belgian and other European beers...many on tap. Very very very excellent waitstaff, who literally made a table appear for us today. Really good mussels frequently available....

If you fancy a bit of moules and flavoured bieres belgiques in the heart of London, this is a good spot. But, depending on the day and time you show up, they can be short-staffed, which means unexpected long wait.

Our food was great, especially the mussels (moules provencale). We enjoyed the beers and the atmosphere. Vedrana and Jennifer could not have been more pleasant and helpful. They made our dinner visit one of our best meals in London.

Bear was good, I can recommend. Mussel have a lot of sand. The first few were ok, but the one dipped in sauce was too sandy to eat. Sausage plater was ok, but not worth its price.

The fries are not worthy of Belgian fries. Excellent beers and atmosphere as always, but sadly no longer acceptable food. We took someone especially to show them Belgian food, but the menu isn't Belgian any more (despite calling themselves Belgian). I had the mussels (the only Belgian thing on the menu) and they were full of little pebbles that I had to spit out. It would be better for them to have less items on the menu, and do them well.

The beer selection is excellent, probably the best place in London for Belgian Beer. But the food is not great, and most importantly, not Belgian. Bar the mussels, it's a strange mix of random international bar food - if you want to call yourself a Belgian Grand Cafe, you should probably invest in some Belgian cuisine.

Great selection of beers if you're a fan! The service was excellent! Food below average...I also found sth not edible in my salad, and I almost broke my tooth!! Atmosphere is nice - a bit too noisy (need some sound insulation), and the A/C was set to a very low temperature, so everyone was wearing their goodies/ jackets.

We were charged 12.5 % service for drinks we ordered and collected at the bar! Generally expensive as expected in this location but surprised with a service charge???

Friendly staff, who very accommodating for our large group. The beer is amazing - a great choice and very representative of Belgian delights. The food is good.

Buena selección de cervezas belgas con servicio de mesa amable que es profesional y amable. Pasamos un par de horas aquí. Nos gustó el ambiente, aunque anuncian tener el balón puesto. Un sábado por la tarde nos quedamos un poco decepcionados de no poder tomar una cerveza de calidad y disfrutar poniéndonos al día con el footie! Los baños necesitan atención. Probablemente volveríamos para una copa rápida si en la zona. Sabemos que el Soho es caro pero los precios de la cerveza aquí son excesivos.

The **Lowlander Grand Café** was the perfect place to celebrate my birthday! The selection of beers was absolutely fantastic, with a wide variety to suit every taste, from rich and bold to light and refreshing. For anyone who loves craft beer, this is the place to be. The food was just as impressive, especially the sharing plates, which were perfect for the occasion. Delicious, beautifully presented, and ideal for enjoying with friends—they really added to the celebratory atmosphere. Overall, it was a wonderful birthday experience at Lowlander Grand Café. Great drinks, amazing food, and the perfect spot to share with friends. Highly recommended!

Very good selection of Belgium beers including about 10 on draught. Food was very average. Service was ok but generally the cafe is a bit worn. Nothing grand about it.

My husband really enjoyed the Belgian beers. We ordered some simple food, chicken Caesar salad and fish finger sandwich; both were ok. We were so happy to find a nice place serving food late (we didn't get there until almost 10pm).

We had had a nice meal there not so long ago, and we were looking forward to going back. Pity tonight was so bad we had to walk out. We sat for 20mins. There were only 3 other tables occupied ie not busy. Despite this the young lady went out for a half pint and a smoke and then came back and played on her screen. The young lad behind the taps poured and reported the same two glasses repeatedly over the same 20mins. The guy with the pony tail came out. Chatted with colleagues who were determined not to make eye contact with customers. He then rearranged cardboard signs, walking past each table, not making eye contact, then back to the bar to chat w colleagues. Rude doesn’t do it justice. Not offered a drink. Food was never going to feasible. After 25mins of unrelenting rudeness we left. Won’t return

Knowledgeable beer staff with excellent beer selection. Chunky chips were fantastic. I'd doc a point for the steak sandwich. Cut too thick in relation to the tenderness of the meat. Entire pieces came out every bite. Could not pull them apart for the life of me.

The Lowlander Grand Café is an excellent Belgian pub. There are a lot of Belgian beers (on draft and in bottles) that are excellent. The food we ate is also excellent, as is the service, which is at a high level. The atmosphere is great, especially in the evening. We have been to this restaurant several times, and every time we were delighted. Vedrana was especially smiling and professional, recommending food and beer to go with that dish.

Nuestra última visita a Lowlander fue para satisfacer el impulso de mi compañero para experimentar frituras de moluscos. Llegó la gran sartén de moluscos y fueron devorados con ruidos de placer y ferviente deseo. Observé en silencio cómo los gorditos mulos se raspaban de sus conchas y se arrastraban, uno tras otro, hasta que la sartén se vacía. Mi compañero proclamó que los moluscos eran muy buenos y procedió a hablar de ellos hasta bien entrada la tarde. Disfrutamos de nuestro almuerzo, pero me gustaría mencionar que me quitaron el plato mientras mi pareja todavía estaba comiendo. Esto ha sucedido antes en Lowlander. Creo que la etiqueta es limpiar platos cuando todos los comensales en la mesa han terminado de comer?

Now dog friendly, which is awesome as the mussels and beer are great! Appreciated the brugse zot on tap, and the unusual Duchesse chocolate cherry too. Quite a lively venue, not for a quiet chat, but fantastic vibe otherwise!

Food was superb,we were served efficiently as we were seeing a West End Show,so worth the wait. Thankyou to Manager who looked after us,we will most definitely return. Mussels were divine !!!

Al no tener demasiado tiempo para una cena previa al show pasamos por tantos lugares de comida y decidimos que volveríamos a este que pasamos. Y un buen trabajo ya que tienen una increíble selección de cervezas y una aplicación para apuntar que era genial y también la comida era fantástica. ¡Vale la pena echar un vistazo si estás buscando algo de buena comida pre-show! Recomendable y el personal era muy amable y recomendable del menú y las cervezas!

My advice is just come here for beer, not food!!!! Ordered a burger and mussel. Burger was fine, but the signature mussel was disgusting. The broth was so salty and half of my mussels were sandy, it was revolting. Worst mussel dish I have eaten in my life. Another thing is they charge 12.5% service, which I dun mind paying, but simply no services were offered. The host who lead us the table was nice, but the waitress who serve us was rude. And for 12.5% service charge, no water was offered, no one check on our meal and not even a simple "thank you" after paying the bill. No offence, but no wonder the restaurant was empty.

Had a delicious evening meal with my wife. Very friendly team with quick service. Both meals were excellent, great atmosphere would definitely come back again.

Brought a large group of 25 people here for dinner before a show and it was so great! The food was delicious and the service was incredible. We did pre-order, but I was still amazed at how quickly our meals came. Would definitely come again!

What a fantastic find….it’s just like the bars in Belgium.. every beer you can imagine, superb selection both draft and bottled…we had some snacks and they were delicious…definitely highly recommend… not going to lie, not the cheapest of places….

Called in for a drink last week. It was extremely busy due to football on tv. Staff were efficient/ friendly with great choice of European beers. Prices more expensive than other pubs but worth a visit.
