We stumbled on this pub on the way back home from Huddersfield, The view of the pub was very appealing, and there was a large car park, behind the building.. Once inside the decor was slightly dated, but was done in a positive way, reminding me of pubs from 30 years ago, (Too many decent pubs have been revamped into sports pubs, or shut and converted into flats or houses) A couple of pints of bitter went down really well, and apparently the coke was good too. We also had 2 gammon and chips which were large portions and very tasty. (good value too at about £11 each.) Overall a cracking pub with good food and drink, which we will visit again next time we are in the area.

Quirky oldworldy Yorkshire pub. Visited for years with the family for good pub grub, of which the meat is sourced locally. Outstanding mixed grill which you may or may not be able to finish, and the best black pudding I've ever had. Go to Lower George expecting a proper Yorkshire experience with Steve and Margaret. The staff waiting the tables are always personable and a good laugh.

I went to the Lower Royal George pub in Scammonden as part of a hen do, and it was one of the most bizarre experiences of my I life. The pub is owned by a couple called Steve and Margaret, who seem to have stepped straight out of the League of Gentlemen. Steve is a stout, possibly deaf man with an upturned nose and a permanent look of aggrievement on his face. Margaret is a possibly fictional, as we never saw her...But judging by her cooking, she's definitely not Nigella. The service was provided by a very excitable 50-year-old waitress called Carol, who seemed to be more interested in flirting with the young 17-year-old waiter, Owen, than actually serving us. The food was nearly inedible. The lasagne was a pure bowl of melted Costco cheese, and the gammon was a hard block of salt formed into the shape of a ham. The decor was also like something from the 1970s, with toilet doilies, Christmas decorations still up, and a very retro carpet coated in dog hair. There's a card machine, but due to Steve's Nokia 3310 being the sole form of communication at the pub, I wouldn't rest your hopes on paying with "plastic". Admittedly they did allow us to use their Christmas time-capsule in the back room as our private party room, complete with napkins from 2011 and Christmas lights that have most definitely never seen a PAT test. Overall, I would not recommend the Lower Royal George pub to anyone. It's a strange, dark place that's best avoided. If you're looking for a hen do destination, I suggest you go somewhere else. Maybe try the local shop in Royston Vasey. It's got a better atmosphere

We have been going to the Lower Royal George for a good few years and it never disappoints us. The real ale is kept in excellent condition and the food is outstanding. The menu has something for everyone and caters for people that have an healthy appetite. May I suggest the signature dish of Gammon and eggs ,chips or the Sunday roast. If have room there are various sweets and desserts to tempt you .

Called here on the way back from Huddersfield, Lovely warm welcome received from the landlord. Two real ales on and they were excellent, The Mrs was also impressed with her double G&T Nice food menu and very reasonably priced, ordered at the bar and shortly after a waitress appeared with our cutlery and condiments, not long after that our food arrived and it was delicious. You can tell when food is home cooked and a little bit of effort is put in, top marks there. Lovely little pub, well decorated and a nice big car park too. Will 100% be going again and I recommend you should too !

Not been in for years but went for a family birthday. 10 of us all crammed round tiny tables. When we asked if we could sit in the dining room the snotty chef woman reacted like we had asked to sleep in her bed. She told us “no you can’t it’s full of my gardening equipment!!!” Ooooookay then! Terrible attitude! Ordered starters. Took 55 minutes. Mussels were a joke. 5 on a plate. No taste at all and over cooked. Don’t serve mussels if you a)can’t cook them and b) think that serving them with salad is normal. Regretted not ordering the crayfish and prawn cocktail as in comparison that was huge! Mains tbh were either good or terrible. I had gammon and that was actually really nice. My wife’s salmon salad however was vile. Warm shredded salmon on cold salad served on a scorching hot plate?!?!?! She reluctantly ate it as no point complaining to the obnoxious chef or surly barman. Didn’t even bother with desserts as had already taken over 2 1/2 hours. Will not be going back. Thank god the company was good. Oh and just to clarify there was only ONE other table in. Dread to think what it would be like if it got busy. Much better venues within a 2 minute drive. Go to Pennine manor or new inn at sowood. Far far far superior to this dated hovel

We visited the Lower Royal George last night 2 couples celebrating a birthday. First impression wasn’t great I told the barman I had booked a table he said “yeh what do you want” we order our drinks and I asked if we could have a tab for drinks and food, it makes it easier to split the bill at the end of the night, he said I “I suppose so but I don’t take plastic. We ordered our food at 7.30, it arrived at 8.30, I had ordered chicken Kiev salad and chips, it was disgusting, there were 2 Kievs they were the cheap supermarket pre formed chicken in breadcrumbs and swimming in fat, chips hard and dry and a bowl with the salad in 1lettuce leaf two slices of tomato and 1 sliver of onion. On the plus side my husbands home cooked gammon was enormous and well cooked but with the same hard chips. I won’t go on that was enough for me and we certainly won’t return.

Called in the pub for a drink with friends, on our way home from Halifax, The food smelt amazing so we all decided to eat. Two of us had the homemade Fish pie and two of us had the Salmon meal. Although we had to wait it was well worth it, the food was piping hot and plentiful we all really enjoyed it. We and have already recommended it to a couple of other friends. The landlord and staff very friendly made you feel welcome and we got talking to a couple who dine there regularly they where very friendly. We purchased two of the home made pies, which where reasonably priced, meat and potato and chicken and ham, they where frozen which was advertised on the notice. Both very delicious and enough for two to share. We all would recommend a visit and will be returning again.

As we were passing this pub we decided to stop for a Sunday lunch. The pub was cluttered and dingy, the meal was even worse. Tasteless vegetables, dry mashed potatoes, coated roast potatoes, obviously from frozen. Meat pre sliced and warmed up? Yorkshire pudding frozen and warmed up? All in all a disgusting dinner for £8.50 each. Keep going if you’re passing and find somewhere decent.

The first thing i noticed about the place was the clutter of decoration strung about the place. I should’ve known from then. The tables were way to close together, we might as well have been eating with the table next to us. We ordered and the man at the bar was grumpy and didn’t show any warmness towards customers. The service was slow but not terrible and the waiters were all friendly - nothing had to say about them. The food however is a different story - on the cauliflower cheese had cling film left around the sides of the dish and I found a piece in the actual dish itself - clearly had been MICROWAVED! The meat was tough and mash was cold. I was already put off my meal by the terrifying dolls put up for decoration that stared at me as I ate. My husbands gammon was ‘average’ and it was clear the chips had been cooked in old oil. I couldn’t wait to leave by this point as some blokes round the front were singing over loudly and ruining the experience for other diners as it’s not a large pub. As I went to the bar to pay I was disgusted to hear a dog barking in the kitchen! As I left sure enough I saw a dog being walked by the man who served me behind the bar. Disgusting. Someone call the Food Standards Agency before I do so myself!

This place takes you back in time but in a really good way, the food is all home cooked fresh so be prepared to wait while it is cooked fresh (not boiled in a bag). There are some great choices on the menu and this time I decided to try their renowned Mixed Grill and wow I had to pace myself as it was massive, with a sirloin steak, a pork steak and a gammon steak all in themselves big enough for a meal on their own, the sausage was really tasty, the black pudding excellent (I am not usually a lover) and all the trimmings including a separate bowl of chips were very tasty. Our main meals were from the small men, I had scampi ad my partner had Gammon. the meals were outstanding in quality and quantity. We'd often photographed the ancient guide stone nearby, then walked across to the Colne valley, but this time we needed an evening meal. The menu was pub grub - we ordered gammon and the fish bucket. Three huge slices of gammon arrived freshly cooked and appetisingly served, and there was a tasty selection of goujons, scampi etc in the fish dish. The chips were crispy not greasy and the portions were substantial. At under £10 each, these mains were great value - the steaks looked super, too.Drinks from the bar and cheery chat with the landlord added up to a very pleasant evening !

Came here for lunch over the xmas/new year break - the setting is very much of a bar from 1970 which I actually quite like, horse brasses and chintz galore - brought me back to my youth.Service here wasnt slow, it was tectonic in pace, nearly an hour passed for our very simple order of gammon and chips plus 3 fish and chips to arrive. My daughter complained her fish tasted of gammon and my gammon ceryainly tasted of fish and all of the chips tasted of fish too. The chips being packet oven chips had obviously been stuck on the same oven tray as the fish and gammon and all of them left to swim in the intermingled fat. They menu said we don't serve fast food, but we do serve good food, This reminds me of those terrible x factor auditions where the contestent proclaims they are frank sinatra re-incarnated before going on to sound like henry the cat being run over by a steam roller. After arriving home and having to brush our teeth 3 times to remove the films of fat from our mouths we decided that this "good food" was not for us and we wont go back.

I have mixed feelings about this place.I have visited a number of times, so luckily knew what to expect. The pub itself is very traditional old Yorkshire style, with a real country feel. Some might say this place could do with a bit of a clean, and a good refurb.Personally, I think the old fashioned decor adds to the traditional feel, but I don't think cleanliness should be compromised- dust and cobwebs in female toilets. The process for both food and drink here are reasonable, and the food is lovely - good hearty food with a home cooked feel.Unfortunately the service let's this place down...we (and this is the case on all occasions that I have cisited) had to wait about 40-50 mins for our starters to arrive, and probably another 20 mins for the mains. The bar wasn't always attended to found myself waiting again to be served another drink, and again when I wanted to settle the bill.It is a nice pub with nice food, and if you are OK with waiting for food, then I would recommend it.Not the sort of place to turn up wjen you are already hungry.

After visiting this establishment numerous times on various occasions, I feel really disappointed to have to write this review. Firstly I'll start by saying the food is usually of a decent standard, great value and more than adequate for a hearty pub lunch. However, sadly our last visit totally changed our perception of what we thought was a quaint and humble little place. With friends visiting from Chester, we wanted to give them a Sunday afternoon with authentic Yorkshire feel. On arrival we each chose our meal. Firstly I was told my choice was not available and asked by the well mannered waiter to pick something else. Disappointing as it was still chalked on the specials board at 1pm- but not a problem. A member of our party opted for the ploughman's lunch and was particularly keen on the pate option mentioned on the menu. We waited for about half an hour before our food was delivered to our small and somewhat cramped table. The gammon steaks arrived with generous amounts of chips flooding the plate as did my food which was ok. The ploughman's arrived last which can only be described as pathetic. A plate of salad, two mini pickled onions, 3 slabs of the same low quality cheddar tossed on the plate, a baby bell, a cheese triangle and a final cathedral city sample, all still packaged. Accompanying this were 2 microwaved bread cakes, no pate and no butter. For £9, we expected more and voiced our concerns with our now flustered waiter. He went to the kitchen, returning to tell us there was 'nothing they could do', the owners had been on holiday and pretty much it was tough luck. We asked to swap for some loaded potato skins... Which they didn't have available, so finally opted for just another portion of chips. At this point the rude owner, marched over, face like thunder, swooped up the ploughmans rather aggressively and without a single word of apology and bounded off to the kitchen. We were left stunned and went on to eat meal feeling very uncomfortable, unsatisfied and quite angry. When coming to pay at the the owner just barked the subtotal at me across the bar without a please, thank you, a smile or a single ounce of hospitality. Shocked at the owners rude attitude I calmly explained my disappointment at the lack of substance and pate on the ploughmans and furthermore how I thought the matter was dealt with poorly, in general. He went onto yet again tell me he had just come back from his holidays a day or two before and it 'was tough'. I explained the rude interactions had made me feel like not returning to which he said 'well just pay your bill and you don't come have to come back'. Wow. Outstanding customer service all round! I understand that things can be rushed after a holiday but what we were served was a joke. If the staff had explained that they were out of pate and variations of cheese we would of happily selected something else rather that receive a botched together substitute. Unfortunately when providing a service 'I've been on my holidays' is not a professional excuse by any means. This quirky little joint has bags of potential and as mentioned previously, meals are usually good. The attitude of the owner leaves a great deal to be desired and I believe will be the demise of this establishment. Such a shame. Loyal customers lost.

We have eaten here many times for lunch and evening meals and never disappoints.24.09.14 was no exception. After conducting some business in Huddersfield, and time approaching 2pm, myself and my wife decided to go to Lower Royal George Inn in Scammondon near Huddersfield, knowing what fantastic food it has in the past has been.Arriving at the Pub at 1.56pm and the kitchens closing at 2pm we didn’t waste any time in ordering food.My wife ordered the Cumberland Sausage, Chips and Egg, whilst I had problems deciding between Gammon or the Cumberland Sausage, the lady serving us came up with a brilliant idea and I took her advice and opted for the small Gammon and Cumberland Sausage.Suffice to say, my wife thoroughly enjoyed her meal and so did I, The Cumberland Sausage is filled with meat and spices, very flavour some, the chips were frozen, but good quality Frozen Chips cooked and served with care are a delight and these were.My Gammon was cooked perfectly, good quality as always, again the Sausage was proper Cumberland, not the cheap Rusk filled I have recently eaten in another pub. Chips, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just as i like them, grilled Tomato and fried Egg, perfect.I had a Pot Of Tea, my wife had a glass of Merlot, the total including tip came to £20, Bargain. Will be going back to Yorkshire in a weeks’ time and will be calling in to this pub for the same.

When our children were little we went to the Lower Royal George most weeks because they loved having the special 3 course meal that is still served on Mondays and Thursdays. We hadn't been to the Lower Royal George for a while and decided to go on a Tuesday evening. The first thing we noticed was a choice of various special meals offered on different evenings in addition to the menu. On Tuesday evening the special meal was steak for two people served with onion rings, choice of chips, jacket potatoes or boiled potatoes and either salad or veg, plus a bottle of wine all for £25.We chose to share chicken wings as a starter followed by the steak meal which Steve did for 3 as our son was with us. The shared chicken wings approx. 20 were a tasty starter and not too filling. We all enjoyed the steaks which we had ordered one rare and two medium rare. My husband and son both chose one of the beers on offer which they had never tried before-I think it was called Reverend James beer-both agreed it was very good.Margaret also had been busy making some home made pies for customers to purchase and take home. We did enjoy our meal and drinks and will be returning. However, I do agree with Helen B it would benefit from a facelift as the décor is dated.

We went for Father's Day. Lovely. I think the only thing what needs a slight change is it needs a facelift. Very dated. But the food is brill. Loved it and plenty

We have been going to the Lower Royal George for many, many years, and have rarely been disappointed. My wife hasn't got a big appetite and really enjoys the smaller portion section of the menu, especially the steak with mash. Despite knowing the menu almost by heart, I still find myself spoilt for choice, but really enjoy the giant yorkshire pudding filled with cumberland sausages. My favourite, however, is the gammon - fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone - I personally have never had or tasted better. Just make sure you are hungry (although you can wimp out and opt for the small portion!!!!!). Margaret also does a superb range of home made pies to take home - very nice with mushy peas, chips etc., and plenty for two. Steve, mein host, keeps excellent ales. This isn't a 'posh bistro ' but a friendly pub serving good beer and great food, freshly prepared to order. What isn't to like?

We have been going to the Lower Royal George for years but haven't been for a while so we decided to have Sunday lunch there today, what a mistake. As we opened the door, the place stunk of damp and was covered in knick knacks, there wasn't a spare inch that didn't have rubbish on it.We both decided to have the Sunday lunch of roast beef at £7.50 each, we expected fresh cooked veg & fresh roast beef, how wrong could we be.The veg which was carrots, cabbage & mashed potato came in separate dishes all of which had been cooked then warmed in a microwave, not nice, on our plates was roast potatoes that had been part cooked then finished off in the microwave and were still white in colour. The roast beef was anything but fresh, it was plastic beef like you buy sliced in the supermarket not what you would expect for your Sunday lunch, we have still yet to decide if the Yorkshire pudding was fresh. In fact I have had better food in hospital and that's saying something !!!.My advice would be avoid this place.

This pub and the Jack o Mitre are two of our most popular eating out pubs as the food is very good, portions more than adequate and the prices always very reasonable. We are regular visitors to both.

We have had many visits to this pub over the years and the beer is one of the best kept in the country, unfortunately the food has gone downhill rapidly, we went for a family meal and were the only people eating so you would think that the kitchen would not be under pressure, wrong.Everyone's starters came out together but I was told that the garlic bread to go with my starter wasn't ready yet, it came out as all the rest of our party had finished so my mushrooms then had to be nuked in the microwave. The medium steak was very well done and the well done steaks were like shoe leather, 2 of us at the opposite ends of the table had peppercorn sauce wich was brought in a small jug and told that both portions was in it. The mustard mash that people had was hard (possibly left over from lunchtime), and the chips tasted as though the oil had'nt been changed for 6 months. The amount of food that was left spoke volumes and when I told the waitress that the meal was poor I was just told "oh dear" and then presented with the bill.

We have been going to the Lower Royal George for years now and it never fails to impress. The welcome you receive from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave is something a lot of more, so called, 'upmarket' eateries could learn from. The beer is always spot on and well kept and Steve knows his stuff. The menu hasn't changed for a long time, but then why should it, they know what they do well and they continue to do it. The food is tasty and home cooked and, as a previous reviewer has said, there is always plenty of it. I continue to recommend the Lower Royal George to friends for very good food. There is little point in recommending anything in particular as, in our experience, it's all good.Well worth a visit anytime. Be aware this is a cash only pub.

My dad and I stopped here after a long journey to look at cars. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. Both our meals were lovely. Would go again if we were ever in the area. Reasonable price and large portions.

We were so looking forward to our romantic valentine's evening. Sadly the previous reviewer has said most of it for us. Extortionately expensive, to be honest, for actually a less than mediocre meal which was not particularly enjoyable. It was obvious, from the occasional groans, the that something was very very wrong in the kitchen, even though front of house staff attemped to cover the cracks with gracious service. Also, yes it was far too cold. Have had lunch several times in this beautiful building, which have been very pleasant, although they really do need to sort out the heating problem.

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

Family meal. More bar staff needed and some did appear somewhat stressed. I ordered the rack of ribs, they tasted lovely but were no where near hot enough. Good JD sauce. The corn on the cobs were inedible, boiled within in an inch! My husband enjoyed his beef burger, but overall, for the price of food, it’s nothing special. Most of the party were just ‘erm, it was okay’. Good price on a bottle of red wine and the food came out as we ordered, we they wanted us to pay at the bar due to party size. Main male staff member greeting as we walked in was friendly.
