L'Ortolan was formerly a really fabulous place in a lovely setting. Sadly it is now closed and will probably be sold. On our last few visits it was looking very tired and in need of some investment and maintenance work on the building and decor. Very sadly the whole experience has gradually gone down hill, the food was still pretty good, some of the staff were excellent but the real attention to detail and the feeling of being exquisitely looked after had gone. It's obviously been fading away slowly over the years but we have some very happy memories of it in the past. Sad to see it go.

I write this review with sadness, as the restaurant will be closing at the end of the month. I had the Chef's Experience, to be part of the kitchen for a day. I learnt a lot about fine dining, and also had the opportunity to taste the delicious food made there. I had a wonderful experience, the staff are impressively talented and friendly, always ready to serve and share their knowledge. It will be an experience I'll always remember. Another special mention to the baker, the bread and desserts were stunning!

We've meant to visit this restaurant for years, but it's about 30 miles away and we just didn't get round to it until yesterday. We heard the restaurant is closing next week, and were delighted to get a place at the 'chef's table', something we've enjoyed at other restaurants. This was a little more informal than other chef's tables, but all the more enjoyable for that. We were right by the pass and most of the staff and the owner chatted to us briefly during our visit. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and the food was delightful. Carefully cooked and well presented with the wine flight much enjoyed by my husband (alas I was driving so only took a sip of each of his wines with the various courses, but it's always interesting and a great treat to try wines properly chosen by those who know how to do it). We're very sad this lovely place is closing due to lack of support. I guess losing their Michelin star made a lot of people desert the place which is rather sad - we dine in all sorts of places and don't just follow the stars and rosettes, but I guess enough people do exactly that and the loss of the star meant a loss of customers. If I were near enough to be a 'regular' (and the visitors book on the chef's table was certainly testament to the large number regular diners), I wouldn't have deserted the place just on the grounds of losing their star. In fact, I'd probably have visited more often unless the food had become terrible, and it certainly wasn't terrible, it was very good indeed. I hope the staff have all managed to find work elsewhere or do so quickly.

Why oh why oh why are they closing. This is the best restaurant for miles. The food and service last night were just amazing. I am not sure who the current chef is but they should be snapped up. The creativity, flavour combinations and appearance were simply breathtaking. We have dined in the best restaurants in the uk and abroad and L’Ortolan is one of, if not the best. Service was faultless and the fine wine pairing was perfect along with the descriptions from their outstanding sommelier who is slightly biased towards northern Italy but with very good reason, a delicious selection. I also think that their prices are just too low, amazing value. Thank you L’Ortolan. Please change your mind !! Stay open.

Very disappointing. Tiny portions of underwhelming food in a bland atmosphere. For the prices being charged, it’s fair to expect a much higher standard. The staff are doing their best but the restaurant is clearly in wind down to closing at the end of this month. Such a shame, I remember the better days.

Such a disappointing visit from the moment we stepped into the bar on arrival. We know it’s closing, but it felt like the removal men had already started and left all the broken furniture behind! A chair with a broken arm, laminate falling off the table - definitely not the standard that we expected! The restaurant had lost all its previous atmosphere and felt cold, uninviting and unwelcoming. It had lost its mojo! The food didn’t fare much better, firstly we were confused because the prices on the menu we were handed did not match the prices on the website but, nevertheless, we opted for the most expensive 8 course tasting menu at £89/head. It promised but did not deliver and the food was very uninspiring, lacking any wow factor. Having lost their chef recently, it felt like desperation from whoever has taken over to live up to the standard but is way out of their depth! The butter with the bread was ‘off’ - amazingly, grainy and with ‘a crust’. It tasted old! The fish course was incorrectly and misleadingly described and the lamb on the following course had unrendered fat and was, in my opinion, much too rare. The portion was also minute! The largest course of the whole meal was an another underwhelming caramelised white chocolate ‘mousse’, one of three, yes three, dessert courses! Cheese was available for an additional £18(!) per head but we opted out. I have rarely seen a restaurant go so downhill, it would be surely better to close immediately than risk further disappointed customers and potentially poor reviews, although maybe they do not matter any more. We removed our service charge but do not believe that our evening in any way represented good value. Very disappointed!

We are absolute fans of the Ortolan but they are closing the restaurant down. It feels like they are silently quitting today months before actually shutting their doors for good to our regret. We came for the Wellington Beef and they removed it last minute from the menu even when their online menu had it still on. They could have let people know if they are calling us anyway a day before to confirm yet they didn’t. They could have call us that morning to want us that the menu had been reduced to see if we still wanted to come. The food was good anyway but we felt misled and no main as good as their Wellington.

I recently visited with my best friend for a nice dinner together and was really impressed with the service and food at L'ortolan. From start to finish, we were well looked after and no request was too much of an ask. For example, we were stumped on which wine to choose and were effectively given a full wine tasting experience at the table. 4 bottles were bought over to us and described beautifully whilst we were able to try them all. We ended up enjoying the same wine and ordering them by the glass (however we would have chosen the bottle if one of us wasn't driving). The food was absolutely delicious - I was worried we may go away hungry as we have big appetites and tasting menus aren't always generous on portion sizes but I left absolutely stuffed. We were offered extra bread which was also a very nice touch as we'd mentioned how much we'd enjoyed it with the lobster oil. The cocktails were super tasty - I'd argue perhaps slightly too pricy. I wouldn't argue the food or wine costs but at £16-£18 a cocktail, it meant I wasn't inclined to order another however if they were priced around the £12-£14, I think I'd have been more likely to have a second. I live in London and venues such as The Ned, for example, offer their cocktails around £15. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to return. Thank you for your kind hospitality and wonderful food.

We had requested vegetarian option in the set lunch menu and with mushroom allergy- the restaurant was informed of this a week before we went for lunch. The veg option was a cauliflower raviolo with the king oyster mushroom taken off and nothing else put in place- there was enough time to figure out a replacement and not serve just 1 raviolo with 2 wilted broccoli/ wild garlic leaf. So not worth if you have any dietary restrictions. Chef needs to rethink veg options.

When we arrived we had a drink in the bar. The service was very average and the waiter served us all our drinks however my friend who was there for her 50th had to wait another 10 mins for her drink. The bar area smelt like drains and sewage, it really wasn’t very nice. So much so I did not want to return after our meal. The meal was good and the young girl who served us was excellent. She knew her stuff and was very attentive. I was VERY unimpressed by the fact the blind where we were sat kept falling down every ten mins and staff rushed over to stick it back up. This was unbelievable and not at all what we would expect seen as though we spent A LOT of money on a meal for a friends birthday. It was embarrassing. First the smell and then the blind. No one even acknowledged this and to be honest I just wanted to leave as we were all so looking forward to the night. The meal was good, we have the 8 course tasting menu. Some courses were tepid but I couldn’t fault the flavour. I never said anything on the night as it was her birthday meal which my husband and I booked and paid for but I was embarrassed. I have been many times but unsure I will return.

Good selection on both the meat and vegetarian tasting menu. Service for all 8 courses took 3 hours but could have been served faster and not all courses were bought out hot.. unsure if this was intentional or not. At the end of our service we were bought a bill for the service charge, I understand this wasn’t included by the gift voucher but seemed very unprofessional to add 12.5% to a gifted meal.

Being totally honest, I can't understand why there are so many amazing reviews for this restaurant. My experience was disappointing. Yes, the staff are very attentive and the food is tasty, but the whole experience is somewhat pretentious and over priced. The dining area certainly lacks ambience. It was cold and unwelcoming, reminding me of an old station waiting room. Surely a French restaurant should be cosy and reminiscent of a Paris dinig experience. I'm sure a lot of attention had been given to the food preparation, but I have definitely eaten better and at less of a price in many other restaurants. Visited L'Ortolan as a birthday treat. First of all, the food was amazing. We started off with pre-dinner cocktails and it was easily one of the most flavourful cocktails I've ever had. We went for the 6 course tasting menu with the wine pairing alongside it. From the canapes to the dessert, each dish was brilliantly crafted and left you wanting more. The wine pairings too were excellent, particularly impressed with the wine pairing for the cod dish wherein the the savouriness of the dish really brought out the fruitiness of an otherwise quite tannin heavy wine. The level of service was fantastic. The staff made sure you were looked after, such as ensuring glasses were topped up and that we enjoyed the dishes, but not in an intrusive way. Explanations of each dish and of the wine pairings were great. They even made sure to provide a special touch on the dessert for my birthday (see picture). The atmosphere of the restaurant was good, however nothing outstanding with some of the decor feeling slightly subdued; although you could argue that this enabled the good to stand out even more. Overall, it was a great experience and one that I would highly recommend.

My husband took me here for birthday dinner! Great foods, drinks and atmosphere. Nicely displayed dishes with special and fresh ingredients! Good selection of cocktails as well. Great place for occasions and family gatherings

Slightly disappointing. First visit and had read a lot of positive things about the restaurant. The food was nice, but nothing special, apart from the foie gras cornet. The staff were very attentive and pleasant- 10/10 to them. I just felt a bit underwhelmed by...

Absolutely amazing food. Excellently presented, well flavoured and each course we were given a full description by the waiter/ress of what we were having. Very attentive staff who were unobtrusive. Couldnt fault a thing. Not the cheapest place but definitely worth going to for a treat. We tried the 8 course taster menu. We didn't drink as both driving but tried a mocktail was splendid. Should have taken some photos of the amazing food but completely forgot as we were enjoying it so much,

The restaurant is great, staff very attentive and well informed. My only concern was that we felt the food service was rushed. As soon as the sourdough bread was placed, our first course arrived, post amuse bouche. We held into the pre dessert only to manage the speed at which the dishes were served. At this price point, you want to enjoy the evening at a leisurely pace.

I took my wife and 2 friends for dinner here at the weekend to celebrate my wife's birthday. We enjoyed the 8 course tasting menu with the fine wine option. My overall impression was very positive. The food was amazing as far as I was concerned and my preconceptions sufficiently challenged. Gorgonzola ice cream just shouldn't work but it absolutely did! The standout dish for me was the Sika deer but I have to mention the amuse bouche, fois gras 'mini Cornettos'. I am sure the chef(s) will be furious by my reference to Cornettos (apologies, but they did look very Cornettoesque). In any event they were delicious. Frivolity aside, the menu was interesting, well thought out and most importantly, well executed. The fine wine option undoubtedly added to the fun and the overall experience. However, again, any preconceptions were challenged. From memory, and trust me by the end, it was a little hazy, there was only one French wine. Most wines were from Italy. Perhaps unsurprising as the sommelier was Italian. This wasn't however, an issue. Although, I am left in little doubt as to where they're making the most margin. The sommelier was excellent value, very knowledgeable (well he convinced me and my guests) and hugely entertaining. There was a slight Basil Faulty moment when one of the waiters knocked an empty glass over and at the exact same moment his mobile phone starting ringing, all whilst the sommelier was delivering his ratio descendi on the latest wine pairing. The sommelier was clearly very unhappy and expressed his disdain with the most wonderfully theatrical facial expression. I am ashamed to say that this sent me and my guests into a fit of childish giggles. It all added to a very happy and enjoyable experience, for which I am hugely grateful to all the hard working individuals at L'Ortolan. Whilst I do not purport to be a food critique, my job does allow me to entertain at some of the best restaurants in London. Sadly all too often I find establishments outside London trying to emulate the 'Greats' and failing miserably, whilst charging a London premium. The experience can feel pretentious and poor value. In fact I have raised this point in one of my previous reviews. Notwithstanding, I am delighted to say that on the evening we dined at L'Ortolan it delivered, and delivered well. I will most certainly visit again. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Excellent food and service. The staff all had in depth knowledge of every dish and looked after us very well from the moment we stepped in the door. The 8 course menu was beautifully balanced, designed, and presented (and delicious!). They also had a good range of non-alcohol options that were again well crafted and delicious.

They honoured our slighly expired voucher (one month out), which was very good of them. The staff are lovely, the drinks were very nice, and the wine was mostly fantastic. Unfortunately, it was the first day there were open after christmas, and several things were no where near what they should have been. We had a six course taster with flights of premium wine. My wife sent her main back course back as it was so salty. I was mortified that she would send back a michellin starred dish, but I and the staff agreed that it was very salty. I really did not expect this to occur in such an establishment as this price point. The other massive issue was the temperature. Because no-one had checked the heating over the festive period, and it had broken, the place was freezing. I dont mean a bit cold, it was about 4 degrees. We were sat next to one of the outside walls, and it was like a negative radiator sucking the heat out of the place. We had dressed up for the occasion, so weren't wearing woolly jumpers or anything, It was absolutely brassic in there. ok, not their fault you would think, but if you are paying over £300 for lunch, you expect it to be amazing - if you are trying to be amazing, you need to prepare better , like a few days before, and make sure everything works. So, to be honest, it was a massive disappointment - for over £300 I expected it to be perfect, and it was far from it - I cant see us going back again.

Festive menu main course (five bird roast) very disappointing. Service average at best and on occasion arrogant. Have been to this restaurant two times before, so know how good it can be. When you pay these prices, you should rightfully expect high standards. A disappointing visit, and I hope a one off.

We had an excellent lunch at L’Ortolan, from the cocktails in the bar before to the coffee and chocolates after, the experience was everything we’d hoped for. We had the five course festive menu which was the perfect meal for this time of year, lovely seasonal ingredients with just the right amount of festive flavours. The service was formal but welcoming, and we had just the right length of time between courses. Overall we were looking for a really special meal for my wife’s birthday, and were not disappointed!

Very slow and poor service. The agenda seemed to be to sell as much wine as possible. Ordered Lobster, it was appalling. Undersized, not fresh and poorly cooked. Complained and was told Chef would be consulted. No comeback, no apology or offer of rebate. I was guest of company and did not want to embarrass my host, so did not take it any further. Cost structure was excessive and beyond poor quality of food offered. Would not recommend. Terrible experience.

Great breakfast today. Decided to skip the full welsh and opted for the avocado and poached eggs on sourdough. Perfectly poached. Had 2 lattes so on a bit of a coffee high at the moment. Waitress kindly gave me a small jug of hot milk to add to them. The rainbow cake looked fantastic, hope it’s still on the menu next week. Love this place.
