Lorentes - Darley Abbey in Derby

The food was delicious! We had a set tapas menu and everything was so tasty and well prepared. The staff were great but seemed very rushed off their feet. Also it felt a bit like we were all packed into the dining room and the noise level was too much.

This was our 3rd visit to the new resturant, after a good and an average experience, we wanted to give the place another go after hearing the food had improved recently. Tonight we were blown away, everything was brilliant, the service, the atmosphere, but especially the food. We will be back!

This was a nice surprise. Going for a quick meal turned out to be the best tapas for miles around. Adore the Pulpo !!

Great place. We've been to Lorentes in derby centre in the past, but this was the first time at Darley Mills. Same quality food but a bit more spacious. All of the food is good. We ordered 3 or 4 dishes per person.

Celebration meal with family & booked after eating at the Lorentes restaurants in Derby and Nottingham. Pleasantly surprised to see how busy the whole mills area was and the restaurant was very busy without feeling overcrowded. Food choice and quality was fantastic with a really good drinks selection. Service was excellent and will definitely return.

Loved this place. Gorgeous setting, the restaurant ambience was lovely and the service and food were brilliant. Dropped in as we were staying round the corner and had some drinks and food. Will definitely come back if we're in the area.

Loved this restaurant. Have been a firm favourite of Lorentes in Derby City for years so knew the food would be amazing but this location ticked all the boxes. Absolutely fabulous

Tapas was amazing. Mushroom croquettas were really good. Staff were lovely and service was great even though the place was packed.

We had a group booking on Saturday and it was lovely, we sat outside and had drinks first and then went in for dinner and it was great. Service was good and quick, food was delicious, and the vibe was great!

What can you say about Lorentes? Other than it is always an amazing food experience.

We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Firstly, be aware that parking is a bit of a pain: it is not at all clear where you and can't drive and/or park. We ended up leaving our car in an industrial looking car park for other businesses unsure if we were allowed...luckily we didn't get a clamp or ticket! The setting is very pretty and right by the water. The building is tastefully renovated and has retained a lot of character. The service is friendly, but a personal bug bear of mine is when the service charge is added to the bill. I want to decide if I should tip and if so how much, not to feel obliged to pay a set amount already added to my bill. I like to tip if my service is outstanding...this wasn't, but being part of a bigger group, pay it I did. The food was OK: nothing bad, nothing outstanding. I wasn't wowed by it. Having had tapas in many places, this was average in comparison. Also, when paying almost £30 per person, I would expect some of the portions to be larger...the calamari, mushrooms, patatas bravas and chorizo did not spread well amongst seven. Also, having one skewer and one meatball each is tight. And, there were two flavours of croquettes served, but not only seven in total so not enough of each for everyone to have both flavours...it was pot luck which one you got. Again, tight. Plus, on the bread plates, there were several crust ends which nobody wanted because they were too hard and there wasn't enough dressing left to soften them anyway! The only course that seemed plentiful was the paella. We got the feeling that because we were an odd number, most of the serving sizes would have been exactly the same had here been six of us. And, we felt short changed as a consequence. Will I be back? Not in a hurry no...I can find better value for money elsewhere.

Lorentes is such a great restaurant. The food, the service and the atmosphere are always 1000/10.

Pretty disappointing evening at Lorentes, we waited half an hour for drinks then had to remind the staff before they eventually arrived. The food was very average, and not only did they not offer to take our very late drinks off the bill but they included an "optional" service charge which didn't really seem optional as it was already included on the amount on the iPad. Unfortunately won't be returning.

Been to lorentes many times but this time we left pretty disappointed and uncertain if we will return. Took ages to be served. Our food arrived and was well below normal standard for any previous time we had been to lorentes. Taste was bland and overall pretty lacking in flavour. We ordered drinks before food but they were not served until we had just finished all of our food and hour later. No apologies from the staff and at the end pretty much forced us to pay the optional but not really optional service charge. Think they were short staffed which didn't help but overall disappointing experience.

Great food as always, service pretty good for saying how busy they were. First time in the ground floor back room, which acoustically isn't great, so the ambient noise levels are really loud, making it difficult to hear folk across the table, or maybe I'm just going deaf!

located in one of the historic buildings of Darley Abby Mills area. Great atmosphere inside. You can also eat outside next to the river, perfect for the summer season. You have a choice of Spanish tapas and paella which are very tasty. Food in general is very good and high quality.

Delicious food, and very nice cocktails, better than most cocktail bars. Friendly service. Don’t wait at the “wait here” sign outside however, as you will be waiting a long time.

Delighful Sunday afternoon lunch here at Lorentes last weekend. Arrived early with my eldest son whist we waited for my husband and younger son as they were shopping in nearby Derby; so Joe and I hit the cocktails list. Sangia Sabor was a hit . . . quote literally as ended up being the strongest item on the menu ! SHOCK I picked that one . . .LOL We had had a few nibbles to tide us over until the others arrived as the food looked so good we simply couldn't wait to order something ! The traditional tortilla (room temp) was absolutely spot on and a real taste of Spain on a hot sunny afternoon with drinks by the waters edge. We then tried as much as our tummies could manage. The Albondigas were delicious as was the Chorizo and the portions were suprisingly larger than expected and excellent value. We'll definitely be back, as we need to work our way through the menu as so many things we want to try and didn't have room; like the 48 hr pork shoulder. Thank you for a great lazy, and boozy afternoon. I highly recommend if you haven't already been and returning if you have; we will be !

Went on Sunday and looked at the city centre restaurant first but it was closed so thought we'd try this one. We hadn't booked but it was no trouble. The chap at the door was extremely polite and showed us to our table. We hadn't had tapas in a while and were unsure of how much to order but he advised us as to how much he thought we should have. We didn't have to wait long for food and when it came it was excellent. Although I've seen some negative reviews here the service we had was excellent. All the staff I saw were youngsters and we were served by a few different ones and each of them were very polite and professional. There were 4 of us in total, two adults and two children and we ordered the mixed paella with 5 tapas dishes and some olives and it was just the right amount of food. Together with drinks this came to £83. It would cost that in some of the chain " restaurants" around.

Loved our experience here, really friendly and attentive staff. Enjoyed just as much as the town location, and the beer garden is amazing!!

Unfortunately had a very disappointing experience recently on a weekend lunch time service. When arriving the waitress was immediately rude when we asked if we could sit at a certain table. When we reached the table it was very wet and dirty so I asked if she had any tissue, she pointed away and said “blue roll is over there”. When the food came, we immediately noticed a really long hair in my mums food before she’d even taken a mouthful, when we made the waitress aware she was extremely rude and insinuated it was my mums. Generally throughout the lunch she was pretty rude, with constant dirty looks and a very blunt tone. No one asked if our food was ok etc and the service very much ruined the experience.

Fantastic quaint place in the middle of no where. An awesomely beautiful place with great food, great service and a lovely atmosphere.

Very hard to find with little signage and limited parking. Food did not blow us away and was lacking flavour. Staff need to be more attentive.

The venue is relaxing and the food is nice without doubt. The cocktail I had matching with everything, it surprises me much. All we ordered was tapas and bread, we got pretty chill vibe. Cocktail probably made of whiskey and some smoky air to enhance the sense of aromatic, the taste is fresh as I recalled. Personally, I love the omelette with potatoes and fresh olive, which is not soaked in brine that the waiter told us so. I did feel a bit different and do believe these are fresh and juicy. The black olives are mild, this is the first time I realised black olives are mild indeed. The duck with potatoes stack is a highlight as well, potatoes are creamy but layered, the duck made me feel like cooked with quite a long time to make it tender.

We found the food here exceptional. Hands down the best tapas we've had in the UK. A lovely little restaurant, great service with friendly and efficient staff. We will definitely visit again.

Visited on a Saturday night to celebrate mine and my other half’s anniversary. We were very impressed! We had a bottle of wine to share and he had a beer. Between us we did 6 plates and a paella. The little plates were served at different times which was really nice as by the time we finished one plate the next one was out ready. The paella at the end was lovely, the waitress did mix up our order with the paella which was not a problem because it was still very good and a waiter came over to say he would knock some money off the paella for the mix up which was really appreciated. Overall experience was great, good value for money, we’ll definitely be coming again. Thank you ( had eaten most our food by the time I remembered to take a photo)

Visited for a wine tasting evening Very well put together with some excellent wines sampled. Cheese board halfway through tasting much appreciated and good.

First time having tapas here and was really impressed. Good menu and great food and drinks. We had a nice warm welcome when we arrived and service by all staff was brilliant always on hand to whatever you need. Thankyou to Natalie for serving us and being very helpful also for making us fell at ease as it was our first time doing tapas. Highly recommend and will be visiting again. Thankyou

Very authentic and tasty tapas.

Me and my family have been going to lorentes since the first restaurant opened in derby, and this was the third time I have visited the darley abbey branch this time for my birthday and me and my family were incredibly disappointed. We ordered the set menu for 5, which was obviously reheated, fair enough it wouldn’t be cooked to order but at least heated to a decent temperature. All of the food was served luke warm, when we mentioned this half way through the service of food, it was told this complaint would go back to the kitchen. The rest of the food served was still luke warm, with a ‘seafood’ risotto with barley any seafood in and under seasoned. When we complained about the temperature of the food again, we received an apology from the chef and a free plate of churos for 6 people before being lumped with a £170 bill, paying £125 for barely enjoyable luke warm food. Do not recommend especially on a barely half full restaurant on a Tuesday evening!

Had a good time at Lorentes. This was first time visiting Darley Abbey location, having been to Friar Gate a few years ago. Nice atmosphere inside, with Christmassy decor and rustic feel. Friendly and accommodating staff. Ordered vegetarian set menu, which came with wide selection of tapas with large portion size for 4 people, parricularly with paella included too! All food was delicious, particularly the patatas bravas and escalibadas. Set menu good way to get wide selection from the menu. Excellent place to come to in Derby, will be back again I am sure!

La verdad que tenia muchas expectativas puestas en el lugar.. pero me decepcione. La vajilla fue muy chica, pedimos gambas al ajillo de entrada.. fue diminuta la porcion y sin pan. La paella mixta para dos personas estaba fria, pero quemada en la base... Muy alejado de lo que se espera en una paella... Pedi Sangria y muy rica.. Los empleados muy amables, eso si pero nos atendieron 4 personas distintas... Pedimos un cortado y un capuccino.. y estaban completamente frios... Tambien pedimos brownie con chocolate y membrillo... Y nos dieron un brownie con crema y mermelada de arandano. El lugar tenia decoracion que va desde Paris a Italia... un par de telas de araña que esperan a Halloween.. Pero muy poco de España...gastamos 65 libras... Quiero creer que fue un mal día...

Food was ok but I’m sorry to say not a patch on the Nottingham restaurant as I’ve been there a couple of times. However, service let it down further. Took quite a while to get a drink and then was never offered another one. Asked for a non- alcoholic beer and was given an alcoholic one. Brought the wrong dish out which we said was wrong but then didn’t bring what we had ordered. Chased up with two different people and no apology or follow up at all so just left wondering if it was still coming. Really don’t like to leave less than brilliant reviews, especially for small independent places but this was overall a disappointing experience.

Visited recently for our anniversary (following reccomendation from a friend)… great food and sangria. Absolutely stuffed, maybe over ordered by a plate or two but even so great portion size and everything was so tasty; including the sangria! Beautiful venue and atmosphere by the river, would love to go back in summer. 10/10 would reccomend!

Food very good and a lot of it...they should serve the Paella first as it was delicious and they serve it right at the end of the tapas when you are really too full to eat it. And when they served the tapas they did not tell you what you were eating! The only downside was Haslams Lane was flooded, so we had to walk over the "wibbley wobbly" temporary bridge which feels very bouncy underfoot and there was no lights at the end near Darleys.. so after the meal we weren't looking forward to crossing it.

Friday, December 1st. Great food and atmosphere. We were shown to our table and then moved to a smaller busier table. The food came out in two arrivals, fifteen minutes apart. I was finishing my last drink, the waitress stuck her fingers into my glass and then asked, "Can I take these?" I replied, no, I haven't finished. I was offered another drink without an apology. I didn't want any more alcohol. The bill arrived and was £146 between four. No drink was deducted due to the taking of my unfinished pint. We had paid £25 deposit, which we needed to have removed from the bill, as well as the service charge, which was mentioned to us three times. So, in conclusion £36 was removed from our bill. Lorentes feels Spanish but lacks curtesy.

I went there for an early Friday dinner The environment was chill, and the staff was amiable Excellent food choice! I had a lovely time. the cheesecake ( tarta de queso ) amazing!

Overall lovely place, food was great, drinks service was not forthcoming with refills as needed to ask different server, very noisy at times. Very limited parking no clear on options for where to park.

Four of us had a top notch meal here. Great service and good food. Creme caramel dessert was the only let down - had undisolved sugar under the caramelised top, but this didn't spoil the overall meal. Paella with squid ink and prawn was lovely. Chorizo tapas were amazing.

Good, service and location were excellent. Very welcoming and we sat outside, with a beautiful view of the river. We selected the meal for 4 at £25 each. The food was lovely, as was the atmosphere. But when my wife came the previous week, all the tapas arrived almost as one. We got it piecemeal, which I found a bit disappointing, as I would have like to mix and match the meal as I went along. Other than that, a lovely evening out.

Went with 2other friends on a Sunday afternoon. Having lived and worked in Spain I found this to be the closest thing to genuine Spanish tapas outside of Spain. The service was brilliant the food was beautifully served and full of flavour. Really buzzing atmosphere. We are taking some more friends this week. It’s as expensive or inexpensive as you wish it to be, but the set tapas meal for four people was good value for £25 per head, for a wide selection of dishes.

Good food reasonable prices and a good atmosphere especially sat outside by the river and in the little courtyard. Staff are attentive and the prices are reasonable. Some of the dishes not totally full of flavour like the meat balls and the paella hence the 4* on food but all in all a good experience

Food, setting and restaurant genuinely amazing, easily the best Tapas I've ever had. Would have given 5 stars but the staff were run off their feet, repeatedly forgetting about us and others, had to ask multiple times for plates and cutlery as well as received other peoples food orders. A bit more organisation of the service side and this could easily be the best restaurant in Derby. Look forward to our nest visit.

Here for the second time after initially finding lorentes at the friar gate restaurant. We ordered some bits off the tapas menu and also a paella. We were advised by our waiter that the paella could take longer than the other dishes just due to how it is cooked, but we proceeded with our order anyway, we were happy for our dishes to come out whenever they were ready. The dishes came out in a reasonable time, with no noticeable delay on the paella. All of the food was warm, delicious and comforting, honestly couldn't put a bad word here.

Food took time but was very good when it arrived. Service was polite and good too. We were a party of 6 including 2 children. All had a good time.

Awful experience this evening. Walked in and our table was pointed out, we weren’t even seated which you would expect. Waitress didn’t introduce herself. We asked for bottled water, we’re served warm tap water. We ordered olives and 5 tapas dishes. Olives were bland and watery. First dish (peppers) was over cooked and mushy. Second dish (chicken) came out 30 mins after the first. It was dry and bland. Third dish (chorizo) was the only dish that tasted ok. This also came out a further 20 minutes later. During our booking the staff were inattentive, lost, and quite rude at times. People who were seated after us and a larger booking were getting food before us. We were getting food before others. It was a mess. We cancelled our last dishes, paid for what we “ate” and left. Extremely disappointing.

Lovely experience, booked a table at 3.30pm for my partners birthday, never been before, the place was so impressive when we walked in. Much bigger than I thought and such a relaxed atmosphere with a buzzing vibe. Staff were lovely and the food was just amazing. Such a great price. Food is so expensive now and they have made it affordable. Great that you can eat as little or as much as you like. Sangria’s amazing for just £8 a jug. Be back many more times, be lovely in the summer sitting out by the river, even just for a drink. Can’t wait to go back!! Thank you guys.

Sceptical with being friary gate customers, but brilliant!!! Shelly owned the room n great waitress nothing too much trouble great atmosphere... would definitely recommend!

Food was lovely, nice decor. Unfortunately incompetent waiting/bar staff ruined the experience (mixing orders and names of the dishes, forgetting about orders, ignoring empty bottles on tables, not even one question if food was ok, bumping into chairs, pushing/leaning onto the customes when serving other tables). Me and my friends were not impressed with the lack of professional customer service.And constant sound of smashed glass bottles didn't add any positive vibes. 😕

Staff were very efficient and friendly. The restaurant has a rustic feel and is full of atmosphere and was warm and inviting. There is a wide range of authentic Spanish tapas and a selection of good wines. Although it was a busy time, waiting times were acceptable and we didn't feel rushed at all.
