Drinks expensive, food non-descript and service slow. The garden peas on the plate (more peas than actual food) were microwaved until the were dry. Steak asked for well done - it was more like rubber.

Popped into the Lord Nelson on Sunday for lunch with my son. We both had the roast beef dinner which was lovely with plenty of yorkies and gravy. Even though we were both stuffed after I found room for Bakewell tart and custard. I will definitely put this one on my places to come back for lunch.

I don’t even know where to start!!! Having ate at the Nelson many times and always enjoyed the food, we decided to go for Sunday lunch. Deciding not to have a roast dinner, we ordered some of the small plates and a mixed grill. We asked for the steak to be cooked medium but this unfortunately was so over cooked it had to be left and the peas were clearly reheated. The small plates had been cremated and we were shocked that we were being presented with burnt food. We decided to have a desert in the hope that it would make up for the poor lunch we had just had. I ordered the sticky toffee pudding. One bite and I discovered it was ginger sponge with toffee sauce on top. I complained to the young lady behind the bar but was not offered a refund or even at least a free desert or drink as an apology. Not sure why the Nelly has gone down hill of late but we’ve decided to give the place a miss for a while. Seemed understaffed too.

We pop in occasionally to catch up with friends. There is always a friendly welcome and good atmosphere. It’s sometimes very busy and the staff struggle to keep up with orders but this is a sign of the popularity, and limited by the space behind the bar. I think some of the prices are a little steep but others a great, the luck of the draw I suppose!

This is a good solid and large Sunday lunch, the quality is not that of a high class restaurant, but is good the staff are kind and helpful, if I live in the area would be my choice for a large sunday lunch. The pork and Lamb I had where well good and served on a large pile of veg, with a large yorkshire. The only thing i was not keen was the cabbage wish was a little water for being boil to long, but the other veg was cooked more to my liking.

Happened to be visiting the area and noticed a live band due to perform here. Whilst waiting we had a drink in the spacious beer garden, which also had a huge outdoor marquee. The place was very full of people enjoying the spring sunshine. When the band was due to start we moved indoors. It was as full, and vibrant, inside as out. People of all ages mixing together. It must be fantastic to have a local like this. Many of the locals spoke to us, which was nice as we were complete strangers to them. The band consisted of a number of local musicians who played exceptionally well. Staff also very friendly. A great atmosphere and a great night.

Looked forward to visiting again today but totally different. My wife had the Chicken Dinner which was dry and tasteless, no Gammon on so opted for Roast Beef Dinner. Firstly I requested some French Mustard and was given English Mustard, served Pork instead of the Beef requested, asked for more gravy and given half a gravy bowl, the meal was so tasteless and bland that I left most of it, terrible. Will certainly not be returning!

After hearing good things about the food we went as a family for Sunday lunch. Two bland, lukewarm chicken dinners. The chicken was dry and the vegetables were tasteless. My son's penne pasta which was supposed to be in a cream sauce with mushrooms and peppers was a bowl of pasta full of onions with a dull grey mush! His garlic bread was soggy and barely cooked!

Not a bad pub to socialise or a meeting place, good age mix.....toilets spotless but would not recommend the food. .. waited 45 mins to arrive and looked like it had been thrown together in 2 minutes. ..steak in a ciabatta was very chewy and to under cooked for me my husband ate mist of it because he was so hungry. . He ordered the gammon which had been blasted on high heat and was one step from being burnt and very greasy... half the plate was covered in dried up garden peas... gravy was so lumpy was more like mince...I wouldn't serve that up to family in my own home never mind to the public...homemade chips are good. This pub appeared to be the best choice of three pubs in the area that we checked based on trip advisor reviews. Really, I have to comment that the other two must be quite poor. The traditional Sunday lunch offered chicken, pork, lamb or beef. The lamb being sold out we all chose beef and this was the only component of the meal which was quite agreeable being tasty and tender. The rest of the meal......mash, 2 small roasties, mashed swede, carrots, cabbage, peas, Yorkshire pudd and gravy was tasteless and not particularly warm. The pudd tasted as if it was the frozen variety, and it was hard. The pub itself was untidy with some uncleared tables and a little 'grimy'. Service was slow. Our meals were brought without cutlery and then we had to wait ages for it to arrive. Probably why food was cold. We won't be returning. Lunch was £6.95.

Called into the Lord Nelson today for Sunday lunch having read the reviews on trip advisor. This is not a carvery, just old style portions on big plates. I don't think I'll ever venture anywhere else for Sunday lunch again as the portions were large, the price at under £7 per head more than reasonable and the quality was fantastic. This bar has ample seating but I'd advice reserving a table. Also free parking available but this soon fills as this is a popular venue. In the garden area there is outdoor seating for smokers etc, a play area for kids and a marquee for functions (christenings etc.) with its own separate outdoor seating area.Great food, great service, great atmosphere, highly recommend.

It's a long time since we've been to the Lord Nelson and because of the good reviews, chose to give it a try last Sunday. It was a reasonable meal, with generous portions, nothing to complain about there. The only thing that I would comment on was the volume of the TVs which were all showing football. I realise that it was a big match but not everyone is a football fan and we left as soon as we'd finished our meal as it was too noisy to hold a conversation. The other thing which we all commented on was a very sticky table where varnish had been sanded off then left unfinished. Surely a few new coats of varnish could be easily applied? (Ours wasn't the only one.) All in all, a bit disappointing and I don't suppose we'll return unless we hear there have been improvements.

Since then the pub has changed with all the small rooms being knocked out into a large bar and eating areas. I visited the pub to met up with an old friend on a Wednesday evening. The bar was reasonably full and it was comfortable and clean. There is a nice atmosphere and the evening was enjoyable. The draught beer selection was average. Only one member of staff on but this was not a problem. There were a mixture people with groups of men and women. No trouble makers. Definitely worth a visit for casual drink.

The general sense is that they can't cope with the number of orders, as staff repeatedly served food to the wrong tables and we're shouting orders to groups of waiting customers--I think some staff training would help as no one seemed to have a clue what was going on. Very disappointed.

Again, another good night at the Nelson. Place was buzzing the band were great, but what about the toilets - dreadful! With the amount of ladies there should be more toilets & the sink area needs to be improved there isn't enough space, there was no soap, sink was blocked & no toilet roll. All these things are basic & wouldn't take much to change, but would make a huge difference to our visit.

This pub is lovely and usually always packed from a range of ages. The bands that they put on are usually great and the drinks choice is good, Sunday afternoon is lovely as it's not too packed and you can enjoy your drink in peace and quiet - the beer garden is a nice size and always kept clean

When going up to order a couple of drinks all the servers were busy so I was standing waiting my turn, then all of a sudden splash. An incompetent barman trying to use a cocktail shaker splashed pimms all over my shirt, suit jacket and tie. I did shout for him to try and get some sort of apology or something but he couldn't hear me so I spoke to another server and all she said was "well he wouldn't have done it on purpose" and gave me some kitchen role. Not to be funny but staining a suit, shirt and tie and getting handed some kitchen role isn't a fair trade. Terrible customer service all I wanted was an apology but now I'd prefer some compensation for my dry cleaning bill.

Mixed to be honest re food . Rate it midway between a 'zing / microwave ' pub and one selling fresh food . My meal , mince and dumplings - a north east pub staple menu , hot , lots of it , but frozen mince and tasteless , my partners , chicken stir fry fresher and tastier . Pre drink order , member of staff saying ' yes what can I get you while still sweeping up behind the bar , no hand wash etc . Food placed on table with little comment and no simple check ' is everything ok etc'

Have been a few times lately and each time the food has been average at best, and the ale has been "off". The place is tired....need a thorough clean at the very least, and ideally refurbishment. The food menus are laminated and dog-eared and the selection hasn't changed for years!

An excellent Sunday roast preceded by delicious mussels as starter and followed by roly poly pudding. Outstanding value for money served with real care.

Great wee place and first pub I made my regular when first moved down from Leith some 11 years ago. Has real cosy feel to the place with great staff and has mix of local regulars and visitors. Next to ancient Parish church of St Nicholas which is worth a visit. Parking is not a problem providing there isn't a wedding or funeral next door to the pub. Fine for wheelchair users and help is at hand if needed. Often families go there for meals with very good chef and the days when good to be outside it has adequate space. There is often a fire outside to keep patrons warm if pub inside is busy. Definitely worth the visit.

Love doing here during my dog walks. Coffee is very good and reasonably priced. Curry and chips always hit the spot. Can get busy when the weather is nice. Breakfast butties are very good.
