Decided to have breakfast here this morning, it was quaint and picturesque... so thought would be lovely, pot of tea ordered by my husband and 2 sausage and egg cobs, ... when they came we were terribly dissatisfied, one sausage that was too small for the bread and the egg it was more like having a fried egg sandwich, the egg was an extra 75p which is OK I guess but £4.35 for one sausage 1 egg in a breadcake did not feel like good value for money. Can get a dozen sausage for less than that. Queried the waitress and she just said that's how we do it 🤨 not sorry about your disappointment or anything, seamed a little rude a response if you ask me. Safe to say we won't be returning.

We arranged an afternoon tea there for my wife's parent 60th wedding anniversary The tearoom has a lot of Victorian charm with images, objects and photos showing the lock at the beginning of the 19th century The staff had arranged the tables, so we had a convivial family atmosphere. The service was excellent and the food excellent There was a big selection of sandwiches, suiting by veggies and non-veggies. The cake selection was even better, with far too much meaning we had to take some home An excellent experience and well recommended

This is without doubt one of the nicest tearooms i have ever visited. The location is simply delightful as are the staff. Friendly and very welcoming along with a great cuppa and good home made food. Peaceful too (aside from the planes from East midlands) but you soon get used to them. Boats , trains and planes it's all here.

It was barely 12.30pm on BH Monday when we placed our order for 2 rabbit stew. 20 minutes later we were told there was only enough for 1 …. Change of plan for one of us to a pie! Another 20 minutes before it arrived. Roast potatoes clearly heated up in microwave and other veg lukewarm. We were then asked if we wanted a pudding and said if there was bread & pudding left that would be great with some custard. Waitress assured us there was so we ordered again for 2. Another 20 minutes later we were asked if anybody had been to see us about our order…. You can guess what we were then told! Sold out! We cut our losses at this point but felt really shortchanged and really disappointed. An apology was forthcoming when we paid the bill. The excuse? They’d been so busy as it was a Bank holiday. Did they really not realise the impact of a sunny Bank Holiday? To add insult to injury, these items were not removed from the blackboard and no recompense given for taking our order and then leaving us hanging around twice before cancelling it. Would never go back and probably the same for other dissatisfied customers that day we heard complaining. Wish we’d gone to the pub ( either one!)

Dropped in for a cup of coffee after a long walk. I had to wait almost 15 minutes to receive it and then it had thick gunge floating on the surface which I was able to spoon off into the saucer. On the plus side, the young lady who served me had a lovely smile and apologised for the wait. This is my first and long awaited visit to this tearoom. Unfortunately it will be my last.

OK, so we went to Trent Lock for an anniversary meal and had the choice of two pubs and Lock House Tea Rooms. Looked quaint so we chose the latter. Had a Guide Dog puppy with us and asked permission for entrance, which was freely granted. As it happened I guess it didn't really matter as there were dogs on the premises, albeit upstairs out of the public domain but the place really did have a doggy smell. Didn't put me off but it might do so to others and previous reports also confirm this.Ordered drinks and liver, onions, mash and veg for both of us, which was on the specials board.Drinks arrived almost immediately and the food followed shortly after. The liver was cold in the centre and was actually pigs liver, despite the staff assurance that they had purchased lambs liver. Being from a butchers family I do know the difference and there was no doubt in my mind. Meal went back for microwaving and returned piping hot but inedible. The liver was crumbly and dry, broke up on attempting to cut. Broccoli was brown in middle, carrots not well cooked, mash quite nice as was the gravy. Regrettably had to down our cutlery after a couple of mouthfuls - proprietor said 'you're not really enjoying that are you' and took away our plates. The price for this meal I think was £8:00 per head and for that I would expect top quality food.On going to settle up, we were only charged for the drinks which saved any further embarrassment though I felt a meaningful apology could have been offered. The place had character and age, but could perhaps have had a bit more TLC to the quality of decoration and upholstery as it was threadbare and looking tired. As for our visit - well as I said in the title it was MEMORABLE, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. What a pity - anniversary or not

Popped in today midway through a walk and had a couple of toasties - Cheese and Tomato/Cheese and Chutney - both of which were excellent and came with a nice side salad.Few reviews mention a lack cleanliness and dog smell but neither were remotely evident today and dogs weren’t allowed in (as a few people asked while we sat inside) so maybe that’s been addressed.Staff really friendly and you get a custard cream with your hot chocolate, what more can you ask for.

We called in for an early lunch on a walk from Attenborough Nature Reserve Trent lock. This tea room is a real treasure full of boating memorabilia and old photographs etc., The food is excellent in fact you are spoilt for choice. I am gluten intolerant but they had several things on offer for me. They do an amazing array of traditional dishes including tripe and onions and steak and kidney pudding, no worries they do lighter meals too and cream teas, so plenty of choice all round. It is in a lovely setting and the place has a lot of history too.

I don’t usually believe in negative reviews as anyone can have a bad day but feel this is justified. We cycled to Trent Lock today and called into this tearoom for a snack and a cup of tea. It is really dirty, smells very strongly of dog, the furniture is tatty, the chair coverings were ripped. The menu folders were filthy. I went upstairs to the toilet and the dog smell was almost overwhelming, there was only a communal towel in the loo which was wet and dirty so didn’t use. I had a toastie which was OK but I found a hair in the grated carrot in the side salad and another one on a teaspoon provided with my salad cream. The lady waiting on coughed and coughed into her hands but didn’t go to wash her hands before carrying on serving. This could be a fabulous place but it currently needs gutting to be honest, just digusting. Would not visit again.

The food and drinks were ok and not too bad a price, but it is very tatty and smells near the entrance door and at the bottom of the stairs, The staff were having a bit of a do about some orders to do with marmite on toast and would be a nightmare when and if it gets really busy. The whole place is full of clutter. The carpets are filthy. I get that they're going for the narrow boat look - but they shoe horn you in amongst the bric a brac. The other half wanted a slice of chocolate cake. They had a Red Velvet Cake and a Gluten Free chocolate cake. I asked if the Red Velvet cake contained Chocolate. The waitress rolled her eyes at me, scoffed and said "No, red velvet"... to which I replied "What is red velvet?" - and her boss said "It's chocolate". Someone asked if they could have lemon with their tea instead of milk and the waitress rolled her eyes and replied with "Do you do a lemon?" - what does that mean?? I ordered warm apple pie and clotted cream - however, the cream had melted by the time it was delivered to the table. The Apple pie tasted ok.. but the Red Velvet cake tasted like a packet mix. The room also had the faint smell of wet dog. Really disappointing - it could be so much more. They're wasting their opportunity.

Visited today with my husband, best friend of 50 years and her partner. My birthday of a quaint lunch, we had a lovely hot meal, tea, matching cups and saucers, dessert was delicious and hot. After reading other reviews, yes it does smell of dogs, but only upstairs, where the toilet is, which does need a clean but as its a tea room that is also a home perhaps some things do get overlooked. We called in for tea and a light snack prior to walking along the river Trent. The service was fairly prompt and the Tea served tasted great. The toasties were made using granary bread and were properly filled. I had an interesting type of chutney which certainly offered a distinct taste. The Tea Room is packed full of interesting artifacts and photographs. However it looks like the entire Tea Rooms would benefit from a good clean and freshen up. This is because dust and grime has collected amongst all the items on display. There was also a pervading damp dog sort of odour throughout which was somewhat off-putting. All in all a satisfying place for a snack but not comfortable enough for a longer meal.

We went twice this week. Just for breakfast cobs, and then sandwiches. It's tremendous. Fascinating interior, with dozens of jugs hanging from the ceiling, lots of photos, models of canal boats, tobacco tins.. And an extensive menu, with usual tea room stuff, and some extras (from veggie bakes to tripe). Great sandwich choices eg cheese and beetroot. A lot of it very much like tea rooms used to be, and should be! But with extras, like cafetiere coffee with several coffee options. Our three different sandwich choices came with different complimentary flavoured crisps and a salad garnish that you'd actually want to eat. Homemade trifle, crumble (with pouring cream, clotted cream or custard) and bread and butter puddings were properly nostalgic. Eccentric isn't quite the word - but I'd say it's unusual to find a tea room with out pretensions that does things with care to detail, and does it very well.

Wonderful place amazing stuff in the tiny rooms. Great service. Great food wonderful location. My missus's grandmother was a bargie. Worked and lived on barges. Her mother was born in the elephant and castle alongside the Coventry canal.

Good selection of teas and food for such a small place. I've seen it very full but it was raining when we were there. Service was friendly but when tea and food was brought it was nearly thrown on the table. Interesting but strange things on the walls.

on a busy bank holiday/God Friday you would expect the place to be open, but when we tried to enter the tea rooms at 4:30pm it was shut.

What an absolute find, this is a very quirky little cafe with lots of memorabilia everywhere based on WW1/WW2, canals and general olde worlde. Tea is served in proper china teapots with royal Albert China and the tea is especially made for them so it doesn't stew too much or go weak when more water added. I chose the stew and dumplings and it was delicious, fresh veg (not frozen), good portions and extremely tasty. My friend had the omelette and it was tasty and fluffy. Also on the menu were dripping on toast and tripe n onions! There is also jacket potatoes, cream teas, Cornish pasties and sandwiches. Very reasonably priced and service excellent. Will definitely be back to try more on the menu. Be prepared to wait for seats, however it is worth it.

Stopped here with my baby on canal walk and had a cream tea. It was under four pounds, nice atmosphere on the River Trent, served on china. Well worth a visit; they serve hot food too. Note they are close on Mondays and Tuesdays.

A friend and I had a lovely cream tea here and can't wait to take the rest of the bunch! Tea was nice in quirky vintage china and the scone and cream were delicious! Maybe the decoration and the 'clutter' isn't to everyone's taste but to me that made it even better!! They do all sorts of food from tea and cake to full dinners and all very reasonably priced. Overall, a little gem in lovely surroundings, what more could you want?!

I hope the owners dont take any notice of some of the reviews which says its scary, cluttered etc. to me its full of charm , history and memories of times past. Last week was the first time i'd visited this tea rooms and I'm hoping it wont be the last. I love the place, and the nice lady kindly let me take a couple of photos to show my relatives how interesting the tea rooms are. I only had a coffee and piece of delicious home made cake, but it was lovely, to have especially in such interesting surroundings. unlike some reviews here I did not find it expensive at all.

Average food, good choice of teas but the whole place was very dirty! Loads of weird, museum like objects, made me feel like I was in a horror film! Dog hair everywhere and smelly! Won't be going back

Called in on a bicycle ride on the Canal path. The tea rooms are in an old lock keepers house. The inside reflects the historical transport heritage of the area. Many mementos of the age of canals, with decorated pots and jugs obviously collected over a long time. The tables have table cloths and doilies, very 'chintzy'. A great range of teas available, with a wide range of snacks, cakes and hot food. The proprietor had time to chat about the house collection, service was prompt, prices were reasonable. A very quirky and interesting place to sit and watch the world go by, and get my energy back for the ride home!

The Lock House Tearooms are a gem of a place. Inside there are lots of memorabilia around the walls connected with the canals including old photos, jugs, plates etc. The menu itself is a gem with lots of choice including hot meals, snacks, afternoon tea etc. The range of teas is itself amazing. I had a very tasty scrambled eggs on toast with tea in a china cup. The owner is very pleasant and we had a long chat but also I took time to admire all the interesting objects on display. This place is really like a time warp and the location by the canal side is superb.

Called in for a light lunch after a bracing walk around the lock. Lovely little place full of quirks and interesting objects. The service was attentive without being intrusive; food and coffee were well-prepared, presented and tasty. An extremely pleasant interlude and very good value for money.

Fantastic location however tables were dirty, floor was dirty, fizzy drinks were flat and cakes that claimed to be homemade were in shop bought rappers. Overall dirty and quality of food was very poor. We would not be going again!

Lovely tea room on the Erewash canal and the river Trent. Great selection on the menu and the fudge cake I had was spot on. If you sit outside on a sunny day it has lovely views.

The choice of home made cakes is great and the canal theme is just right for this lovely tearoom. When the weather is nice you can sit outside and watch the world (and boats) go by.

We love this place, the staff are friendly, the food is good homemade food not boil in a bag,or two for one,its unique and has awards for this reason but its not everyones cup of tea!!!! I bring my little girl here and she loves to have a toasted tea cake and help me with my pot of tea,we recently had a snowman tea pot which was lovely and very fitting for the season as it was nearly Christmas! This is a small tea room and allows you to step back in timefrom the moment you put one foot in the door!!!!!! If you don't want different don't go!!!!

A pretty little lock house converted into tea rooms. On a cold winters day while out walking with our Guide dog puppy in training, we came across this little gem. We were warmly welcomed by the staff, and served a delicious flat white coffee accompanied by a biscuit. We had a tasty toasted sandwich snack & a very yummy chocolate muffin, all served on flower china plates (just like grandma’s).

I am alitle surprised about the review remarking about it being "fusty" and "wierd" and "ditch the clutter". All I can say in response to that is that this place is a tea room not a fancy restaurant. It is next to a canal and attempts to reflect that in that its "clutter" is mostly canal related from times gone by, its "wierd mannequins" etc try to give an impression of how canal people dressed and lived. If you like going to McDonalds, Costa or Starbucks type cafes then you probably wont like this, however if you like somewhere idividual, atmospeheric and refreshingly different, that actually serves real tea (not something in a bag that tastes awful) you probably will. Trent Lock tae room has an atmosphere (not fusty or damp) that makes it somewhere really pleasant to stop for 1/2 hour and recharge your batteries when walking or cycling and gets very busy on a nice day. I take my mother there every Saturday afternoon and we like it. I do find it sad that some people have to make negative comments when someone tries to create something a little different from the norm, this country has become so boring and samey over the last few years and I love to find a place that is not in the Mcdonalds/coasta/starbucks mould.

The sign outside offered Dripping on Toast as an option, but I resisted! We all had Cream tea. The tea was pleasant enough, but i'm far from convinced that we had Clotted Cream as advertised. The scones were also rather dry. Certainly not the best.

This is a lovely tearoom on the banks of the Erewash canal. The food and drinks are of good quality and are served on antique china. However the tea room seating is crowded and tables placed within spitting distance of each other, making anyone with small children or mobility problems have difficulties. I would even go as far as to say if there was a fire etc there would be trouble getting out it is so cramped.

We bought a Groupon offer based on the picture on the advert on Groupon. All we got was 3 tiny finger sandwiches with minimal filling. A cheese straw which was half the size shown in the picture. No pork pie. No sausage rolls etc. A packet of crisps shared between us. Scones were nice but our cakes were cherry slice which was topped with a very runny icing & a tiny child size fairy cake topped with hundreds & thousands. Don't let the pictures fool you!!!

Great old pub that we visit every year during the summer months, food was ok, and this year seems like standards have slipped, paddock area in the garden looking very tired and in need of a makeover, had 2 pints and only one was decent, would return but hopefully improvements made
