Lock and Key Hotel - Bar & Kitchen in Liverpool

We love this place. Excellent brunch menu and friendly service in a comfortable, calm environment. The only improvement would be to have some sweet options available with coffee.

Lovely little place and staff pleasant. However the flat whites were cold and when the eggs benidict came it was also cold and eggs looked boiled rather than poached. I informed the staff and to be fair offered to get me a new one. Unfortunately the eggs were still very over cooked but the food was hot 2nd time round. Shame as it had been recommended.. Will give this place 10/10 for staff but only 2/10 for the food

I have been to Lock&Key kitchen and Bakery for English breakfast This place is beyond amazing! Food is fresh and very tasty. Place is so cozy. Staff are professional. Price is very reasonable. I totally recommend this little lovely place if you in Liverpool centre in the morning time for a unique experience of fantastic cafe drinks and food

Very worn 'hotel' with a total absence of overview. The room was not cleaned and when I returned from meetings the door was unlocked. Had booked the room for 3 days via Hotels.com but the 'hotel' thought I was only going to stay there for 1 night. Thanks to the nice staff, we were able to correct the overall impression eventually, and if you like things authentic, this is a good alternative to the chain hotels!

Booked a ‘cosy room’ for a business trip. Room was in the attic and not fit for purpose. Desk completely unusable for anything, (working or getting ready) as it was crammed in a dark corner with no space or light. Plus it was absolutely disgusting! (See pic) The room also stank of cigarette smoke. When i complained I was told it was my fault for booking a small room and could be upgraded at a cost of £20 per night. And not to worry about the cigarette smoke, they know it’s not me as i don’t look ‘the type’. Never mind the carcinogens I'm breathing in. So i was given a pathetic battery operated lamp for the desk and sent on my way. Shocking response. So rather than drinking in the bar and eating in the restaurant, booking breakfast etc….i took my business elsewhere! This was also a test for future business trips. I was clearly treated as a lower class of person because I booked a cheaper room. All customers should be valued equally because you know what? Not only would they come back again but they also might book more expensive rooms….. Such bad business.

Had to leave a day early 👎 Myself and my partner being locals often go into Liverpool city centre and stay over in a few different hotels. Having never been to Lock&Key hotel, we have been to their lovely bar a few times and decided we would book two nights in the “spacious blue room”. Our host Meg was very welcoming and attentive. All the staff here are really friendly in general. Unfortunately, as stylish and boutique the room was, there were so many small issues that ultimately led to a big issue. Firstly the bathroom is not a bathroom. It’s a small washroom with no dedicated shower cubical. It’s a continuous floor that extends to the toilet. This means that water damage is likely and unfortunately has happened. The sliding washroom door is completely deteriorated at the bottom due to the water damage and I could see why when I had a shower. The water from showering completely leaks out onto the rooms carpet and around the toilet. It makes the washroom feel unclean and unattractive. The sliding door also has no soundproofing, didn’t close fully and has no lock on said door. The room itself was pretty as the pictures show, but the condition is wearing. Chairs in the room had wonky legs, the end table toward the foot of the bed was damaged, marks present all over the walls with paint chips dotted about. The bed was two singles put together so I fell down the middle at one point like a trapped mammal. There’s an in room digital iPad where you can order room service that was cracked and didn’t work. There was also a window in the room that had dropped out of position around two inches so was adding to the already present noise issues. The TV was also restricted so you couldn’t access its smart hub apps. Meaning you have to use a pay per view app to watch movies or just watch general tv for free. We asked for another room but were informed that night was fully booked and were unable to change. These issues could be overlooked but our main problem was simply that we did not sleep at all. The soundproofing of the room was non existent. We could hear people talking outside the building, let alone the busses, trucks, cars, seagulls etc. it literally felt as though there weren’t any windows at all, we could hear everything. That being said, the main noise issue was the front access door to the building. Our room was situated right above it. Well over 100 times the door would swing and bang shut so hard it would honestly give us a fright. Being so loud we could feel the vibration every time. We unfortunately had no sleep and there was a fire alarm test in the morning which I understand is protocol, but the alarm came with a strobe light that went on for over 10 minutes. Having no sleep then having to cover your eyes for a visual alarm was just disorienting and stressful. The banging of the door every few minutes, the continuous noise of passersby, the fire alarm and the noise from cleaners just added to an entire stay of constant distributive noise. Our second day had completely been ruined as we had to try and nap into the middle of the day, meaning we couldn’t go out and do what we had planned. There is just no soundproofing in the building whatsoever. The hotel charges high rates especially during weekends, competitive with top hotels in the area. There needs to be investment in the rooms to better soundproof the windows and doors. The front access door could simply have a hinge placed on top to slow the door and stop it from startling guests. The bathrooms have to be upgraded. Paying a premium price for a washroom that’s leaking is off putting. We unfortunately decided to leave after laying about exhausted for most of the day. The lady on reception offered us a different room for the second night, but being local we just wanted to head back home. An absolute shame as the style of this hotel is unique and attractive. But it seems to be more style over substance for us on this occasion. We were told we would be contacted after the receptionist spoke to management, but yet to hear anything back.

One of the best breakfasts I’ve had in quite a while. I’d struggle to find a negative on the food. The venue itself is intimate and doesn’t seat many people, stopping you from feeling overwhelmed when it’s busy. The staff were lovely and the service was fantastic. Would definitely be back when I’m next in Liverpool.

I love this place. Every time I visit Liverpool I make my son take me for the full breakfast. The food is excellent quality and priced really well. The setting is trendy and down to earth, really lovely. And the staff are always really nice.

Wonderful staff made us feel at home very helpful. The breakfast was great, cocktails very nice. The room was large very clean and tidy wonderful decor. Very good bathroom with large shower. Bed very comfy. Would highly recommend this property to anyone who wants to stay in the centre of Liverpool. Will be back. Thank you for your hospitality.

Wanted a good breakfast before flying home to Jersey. I had a delicious granola, yogurt & fresh fruit bowl, & my daughter had the gluten free cooked breakfast. All delicious & reasonably priced

Very cosy little place with great breakfast menu. I have enjoyed a decaf cappuccino with delicious avocado and eggs on sourdough bread. Very reasonable price. Will definitely come back!

Great location. Really friendly helpful staff. Room needs a couple of tweaks. Shower water just went everywhere. No sockets near the tea making facilities. Had to boil the kettle on the floor across the room. No toilet roll in the room. Minor tweaks would make this 5/5. Great value and will give it another try.

Great spot for breakfast. I had a cappuccino and Eggs Royale, asked for it to be on toast instead of sourdough & no issue at all. Lovely friendly staff. Beautiful decor. Would recommend and return.

Sincere thanks to the exceptional staff at the Lock and Key before our first visit to Anfield. Liverpool is famous the world over for many things, the PreMatch Pancakes we had here and the menu in its entirety is something to savour. We can’t wait to return!

I had an exceptional stay! The location is outrageously good and the rooms were everything I needed. Spacious, comfy and cosy. Bathroom was also great - great shower pressure. Really welcoming staff, nice rooms

Fantastic hotel in a great location in Liverpool city centre. I only stayed for one night but it would be very comfortable for longer stays too. Just over the road from Liverpool One, all the amenities you could want are nearby and loads of public transport options in the area. The room was clean, cosy and very well appointed, staff all lovely, especially Luke who checked me in. Was great value when I stayed, paid not much more than 50 quid and for the price I was shocked at how nice it was. In the past I've paid 2x or 3x for hotels elsewhere that weren't nearly at this level.

Room was small and cold. The radiator wasn't working at all (even when I turned the knob water came out of the pipe. I was situated in room 401 right in the attic so many stairs climbing up. Also the room was in need of a refurbishment. Only good thing in the room was the bed. Personally wouldn't stay here again

Was just passing and called in here today. Cracking breakfast with great fresh ingriedients and friendly service. Couldnt recommend highly enough. Willdefinitely be back.

I come to Liverpool to see my son once a month and i have stayed at a few hotels over the years but the lock and key really impressed me all round. I was delayed by roadworks and my drive from Bristol took twice as long and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. My room was clean, tidy, modern and very comfortable. I had a breakfast in the morning and although very busy the service was fantastic! All round a very pleasant experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I work in Liverpool and stay here week after week. Prime location and a stunning building are already a given but hotel also sport an amazing team individuals to look after their guests. I usually get the same room and they do indeed go out of their way to make sure I am happy again to come back week after week. The rooms are spacious, cosy and fitted with a very powerful shower!!! If you stay here , the breakfast is a must!!! The french toast is insanely massive and scrumptious! Andrew, Luke and Megan are a great front team to be the face of this absolute gem of a hotel! Hospitality , the way it should be!!

We stayed here on the second night of our city centre stay and can't wait to go back. It is a small boutique hotel with a lovely bar and restaurant. Everything felt really safe and secure Covid wise. Our room was lovely, bed was comfy and they have this amazing digital technology in each room to order room service, fresh towels, water etc.The staff were wonderful, Luke the hotel manager was brilliant and very attentive. These guys do not stop. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice and the coffee was delicious. Will definitely be back!

We had breakfast after staying in Posh Pads along the road. The Covid precautions in place were reassuring. We had a great choice of breakfasts and service was quick.

Desayuno vegetariano mejor en la ciudad como irreal. . . PERO Iv fue aquí 4 veces y tuvo la misma cosa, es bueno que no necesites carne y me encanta la carne, ¡así que me convirtió! PERO de nuevo fui a almorzar y después de las 3 pm sin almuerzo, eran las tres y media y vacío ¿sería tan difícil ponerle un brekkie? ? Así que pensé que de todos modos conseguiría una pasta, fue tan decepcionante como una basura básica.

Stumbled across this bar & cafe hidden away down Duke Street. I was attracted to the building and the look of the place (exposed brick interior, industrial style decor) in this old Georgian building, it was very tasteful looking both outside and in. The service was good but I really wasn't impressed by the snack I had there - a toasted sandwich. Sounds petty, but the bread was bog standard from a sliced loaf which and had no flavour whatsoever, despite being served on a wooden board garnished with rocket and tomato, the presentation couldn't make up for the food. The coffee I had was tasteless and weak too and I really think that the owner/s need to forget about the decor because that's fine, and concentrate on providing quality food.

Boat landed from Belfast at 6.45 and this place was the first open in town (that I could find) at 8am. Three of us had breakfast and were all thoroughly happy with the food and the service. Well done giys

Called here today for a light lunch with my friend, we had Toasted Sandwich BLT with fries. The food was fresh and was fairly big, the toasted sandwich looked like a bagel but it was absolutely delicious and very filling. Atmosphere is nice and relaxing, service was quick and with a smile. Lovely place to eat and definatley worth visiting again. If your looking for a quiet lunch and something really tasty with good food this is the place.

Stopped at this fab 3 storey hotel in L1, own bar and restaurant open until midnight, breakfast for a tenner (Biggest) was to die for, check out at 11am check in at 2pm. Luke and the team were amazing, Luke printed off maps for us and sent us on our way. We booked 3 rooms for a weekend away on 11th January 2020 and cant recommend it enough. There is definitely only 1 hotel for us when we return. It genuinely is that good!!! Thanks Luke

Large, clean rooms in a very central location. All staff members were proud of the hotel and city and very keen to supply information and tips on what to do and places to eat and drink.

Stayed overnight at this boutique hotel in the heart of Liverpool. I asked specifically for twin room which was arranged and it was clean and beautifully decorated. The bed was comfy and the bedding was high quality. Initially intended to eat out in the city before going to an event at the docks but stayed and enjoyed a very good pizza and wine at the hotel instead. The choice of breakfast was excellent and well cooked and lots of it. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. I can recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again

We stayed here for four nights on a girly shopping weekend away and cannot fault this bijou hotel for their great hospitality and attentive customer service. Luke and the team at Lock and Key were friendly hosts and nothing was too much to ask. The rooms are fashionably decorated and our twin beds were really comfortable. The wet rooms whilst small, were perfectly formed and the bar/kitchen offered a great range of cocktails and a tasty brunch menu. Fantastic location within walking distance of Liverpool One, Duke Street, Bold Street and the Docks. Most of all their was an overriding feeling that making our stay the best it could be motivated the staff, right down to help with our incredibly heavy suitcases at 5am this morning! Thanks for a fantastic weekend.

We had a great evening, despite waiting for a table for six (as it’s a small bar)! The staff were so attentive and welcoming! There was a jazz duo who really made the evening special.

The bar of the Lock and Key hotel was a great little place to have a glass of wine at the end of the evening . I was staying in the hotel so it was very nice. As a solo traveler it felt safe and the guys in the hotel really looked after me.

I have had to write this review as I first came with my daughters for brunch last week and love it so much ended up coming back another two times. The 2nd to have the amazing soup and the 3rd for the fab continental. Definitely our new fave with fab tasty food, cool vibe and great service. We'll done guys and next time we'll bring our Elvis as yous are dog friendly.

Took my partner away for the night and stayed here. Close to all bars and restaurants in the city centre and in particular Duke Street market. All staff are so friendly, and we will definitely be returning

We were staying overnight at the Lock and Key and had lunch on arrival and breakfast before we left..Both were absolutely lovely..Well cooked,tasty and plentiful..Probably one of the best breakfasts I have had for a very long time..polite efficient staff and the food was well priced..A total recommend and worthy of another visit sometime for sure..

Fantastic Italian style pizza and red wine for dinner. Avocado and eggs on toast for breakfast. Loads of attention to detail and so tasty. Very reasonably priced.

My boyfriend and I stayed for one night for my birthday and it was absolutely perfect, the room was beautiful, clean and spacious and the bed was the comfiest thing ever! We were offered prosecco as a treat and were made to feel so special the whole time. The food we ordered was delicious and fresh and I will definitely be returning in the future to try the pizzas! Luke was so helpful and kind and I was able to leave my luggage before and after check-in so i would be able to go shopping without lugging it around with me, it felt like nothing was too much. The location is so handy too, close to all the shops and restaurants. The best experience and I will be booking to stay again in the near future. Thank you to all the staff we encountered, you made my birthday extra special and are a credit to the hotel.

We spotted lock and key just before we went on our holiday and decided we would try when we got back home. It was amazing, one veggie brekkie with halloumi and asparagus, and one full English, 2 teas for £20. Everything was cooked to perfection. Decors was beautiful and staff were perfect. Will be back to try the pizzas :)

Great little place, just off the beaten path in Liverpool. Well designed and good atmosphere, this is the second time we’ve popped in for brunch.

Whilst there was no fish and finger pie and whilst it wasn’t on penny lane this place was fantastic! Nice vibes and our waiter was such a lovely gentleman. I had two of the lovely breakfast bagels but they were very filling - you’d only need one! The eggs looked divine and tasted scrumptious. Not quite from strawberry fields but the strawberries were very sweet and yummy.

We stayed at the hotel and had breakfast. The food was very good. I had bacon and American pancakes and they were wonderful.

Had the most delicious breakfast. Staff were so friendly and it has a relaxed, comfortable vibe. Recommend the veggie breakfast wrap! Thank you :)

This hotel was absolutely perfect for us for the weekend. Great price and even better service. Luke the manager was so accommodating and is a great addition to the hotel. No request was too big. Fab short break at this boutique hotel whilst visiting Liverpool for the Netball World Cup. Comfy twin room for self and daughter . Everything we needed. Great towels! No time to check out bar/restaurant but it looked good . To top it all England won their match against Jamaica

We booked the lock and key as we like a smaller more personal hotel which is exactly what we got , Luke and Richard were amazing from book in until we left , great rooms with really comfy bed , food was delicious and all the staff were really helpful and friendly.

Welcoming and friendly staff, breakfast was amazing, lots of choices vegetarian and vegan options - highly recommended.

We stayed in base apartments on duke street, and as we walked to town we walked past this little bar called Lock and Key, so on Friday we called in to have breakfast and we wasn’t disappointed, it was amazing, the staff were friendly and the place was decorated lovely, plenty of choices on the menu, I had poached eggs and crispy bacon on a bagel with an Americano, it was presented on a black slate with rocket and tomato with balsamic vinegar, beautiful. Hopefully we will be back soon

Pros, great staff, comfy bed, excellent shower, Cons, we stayed in room 4 which quite frankly felt like it was in a cellar it was so dark, bathroom only had 1 spotlight in the ceiling which was not great !

Delighted to have found this new hotel. We stayed for 2 nights over a busy weekend in Liverpool. Our room was spotless and well furnished, with a comfortable bed and excellent shower. Location couldn't be better for shops, pubs, restaurants etc all being located nearby. Staff are all excellent and friendly, between hotel and restaurant, nothing was too much hassle. We ate and drank plenty in the hotel over the weekend between pizza, breakfast and cocktails. Special thanks for the champions league final hospitality and good to hear about your Mayo roots. We will be back!

We really enjoyed our stay at the lock and Key, the staff were very friendly and the manager was extra helpful. The hotel is located just off the main centre so it’s s stones throw from the shopping and bars. The whole decor of the hotel is beautifully chosen and has a nice eclectic feel.

Food was fair for the price, and the Pinot Grigio and draught IPA were nice. We had the tuna melt and croque monsieur. The place has only been open six months or so apparently, but it felt like they hadn’t found their feet yet. Dishes between customers were inconsistent - some got their sandwich with chips, others not. Food was not brought out together; several minutes wait for second main to arrive despite a quiet period - there were only two of us. The staff are young and need more confidence. The kitchen needs better ventilation as the dining area smelled of cooking oil. The tables were not set properly - missing napkins and cutlery, and the jars that were designed to hold them looked like they needed a good wash. Certain items on the bill didn’t match the prices in the menu and the waiter seemed confused as to whether we had already received our bill despite it being in his hand. Despite full waiter service, we were left to approach the bar to settle the final bill. All a bit disorganised and we felt it could be quite chaotic on a busy day; a good front of house seemed in order. The wall by Table 1 was heavily stained with greasy finger marks. A simple wipe would probably do the trick. This place has potential but lacks attention to detail. We’ll try again in a couple of months to see if things have improved as it’s a decent venue away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre.

I have only rated the Lock and Key Hotel three stars because I think £97.50 each for an overnight stay that doesn't include breakfast is expensive. I couldn't fault the staff at all though, they were very pleasant, helpful and very accommodating. The decor in the rooms was not to my taste, but that's a personal thing. The view from our room was of brick walls, plastic covered windows and scaffolding, so not good. The beds were clean and comfortable and I had a good night's sleep even though the pillows were rather hard. The en suite bathroom was very nicely presented and the shower was excellent but there was nowhere to put anything and everything got wet when I used the shower. I didn't book for myself and my three friends and would probably not stay here again because I would choose to find somewhere that I consider to be better value.

This is a little gem in the heart of Liverpool. A sophisticated boutique hotel with exceptional friendly service. The decor is bang up to date, stylish and sophisticated a real adults getaway.. There is a small bar area with dining the breakfasts were exceptional, cooked to order and piping hot. 10/10 all areas. One word of warning the rooms are accessed by stairs due to the listed status of the building there is no lift. If stairs are an issue ask for a ground or first floor room.

We stopped at the lock and key for a night away to see a bit of Liverpool. What a lovely hotel; the staff on arrival were so friendly and accomodating, guided us up to our room, asked us what our plans were, generally made us feel extremely welcome, and that they cared for our needs.

We had an overnight flight from the States, arrived in Liverpool tired and hungry. Stopped into the Lock and Key restaurant, where they took great care of us. Coffee and tea arrived immediately, with hot breakfast arriving just a few minutes later. Sigh of relief! The food was good but that egg, not only delicious but beautiful. We returned several times for lunch or coffee throughout the week that we were in Liverpool, and will return when next in Liverpool.

... and I’ve eaten them all over the world. Fresh tortilla not too thick and slightly crisp. Filling just the tight side of overstuffed. Slightly browned omelette. Loads of mushrooms. Not too much avocado or too little. Salsa with a nice bite. An intimate space with cool and friendly staff. Good coffee. Fab

First time we stayed here. It's in a great location. The room (9) was very large and great decor and furnishings. There is a wet room rather than a bathroom but perfect for your needs. The bed was so comfortable, extra large and the pillows were good.

Our travel agency originally booked another hotel for us, but when we arrived there, the other hotel was overbooked, so that they sent us to the Lock & Key Hotel. What a Jackpot!

Ok, i originally booked an apartment i Liverpool but on arrival i was appalled so i looked online and found the Lock & Key.

Fabulous place! Warm, friendly atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and informative,Sean makes the best gin cocktails!!! Room,small but had everything needed for an overnight stay. Sunday lunch was great!Our stay from check in to check out was fabulous.,can't wait to visit again. Would definitely recommend it

Stayed with colleagues whilst attending event at the Exhibition Centre. Small hotel,14 rooms. Room fantastic, all staff brilliant, go the extra yard to make you feel welcome. Breakfast very good, location very good. Highly recommended, would definitely stay again...Well done!!!

Looking for breakfast just after 8am, and as we knew this place was open at this time we decided to give it a go.

Was a bit nervous about this place as in z bit of a "tatty "area. HOWEVER apoearances are deceptive . The hotel was spotless and quirky. Very much in style of Malmaison in manchester.

Like the Filter & Fox a couple of doors away the Lock & Key provides a great breakfast. The portion sizes seemed to be somewhat more generous, but not as flavoursome. This is a larger establishment than its neighbour and the seats somewhat more comfortable.

Sunday afternoon, wanted a quick bite and couple of drinks. When we arrived, one table of 3 was being served pizza and beer - we thought it looked good, although pizza is served on a ripped open takeaway cardboard box, but that's okay if it's meant to be fast and informal. Unfortunately, it wasn't! We ordered drinks and three food dishes. The manager was sitting at the bar when we arrived (I recognised him from last time I was there just for drinks) and there were two young male staff also, who were both very friendly. Unfortunately, their friendliness didn't make up for the terrible service that followed after the manager left them to struggle on. The veggie pizza ordered came with rocket salad, but after 40 minutes we were told that the delay was due to the fact they had run out of rocket. Five minutes before our pizza was put on the table, one of the waiters arrived through the front door with a bag of rocket salad which had just been purchased from the local supermarket. Then we were told that our other dish would be further delayed, the special halloumi salad and fries, because they had no more salad! Another 30 minutes later the waiter came bag from his shopping trip with more bags of salad and, as he walked through the front door again, explained within ear-shot, that he had to go "all the way to the top of Bold Street" to get our salad! We asked for napkins and were told that they had run out and so gave us some ripped up blue paper from behind the bar, yuk! But then a few minutes later we were given some napkins which they had just 'cleared' from the earlier table, yuk again! We were given an extra bowl of 'fries' because of the delay. The fries (little square cubes) were not very nice and so we didn't eat any of these. When our plates were cleared we explained that the fires were not very nice and as the waiter took them back he shouted to the 'chef' that we didn't like them and that he was "not surprised because they are not really fries"! When I asked what the 'heat' was on our red pepper and feta pizza we were told that it would be the balsamic glaze or maybe the red pepper! Basically, the very friendly, young waiter simply didn't have a clue about the menu. We want to support our city and these new independents starting up, however, can't accept such shoddy service. I believe the owners need to invest in their staff and give them adequate training and the correct facilities to do a good job. We wasted our £35 and wish we'd have spent it elsewhere. Don't think we'll be returning any time soon.

I recently visited this place for breakfast with a friend really enjoyed it the wait was reasonable and the food its self was lovely. Reasonably priced for the city centre.

Would 100% recommend to stay here in Liverpool. The hotel is beautiful and the staff are so helpful and welcoming. Michael greeted us and took care of us so well during our stay. Will definitely be back!!
