Lovely setting. Good atmosphere. Professional and friendly hostess (owner?) but not as we’d hoped. High prices (yes I know it’s 2023) but these need to be justified. Table service not particularly attentive (salt and pepper, other sauces?). Cullen skink at £12 too watery and not enough fish. Mussels main less than the mussels starter at The Douglas in Brodick (and not as tasty), crusty bread (as alternative to skinny fries) about as crusty as the top of an undercooked rice pudding. So disappointed. This was our last evening after a super week on Islay and Jura. Better chef or just a cook more acquainted with what the menu offers? Sacrilege - but try the Port Charlotte hotel up the road.

I had one of the most amazing seafood meals ever and super value for money. To start langoustines then crab claws (lots), a bottle of Prosecco. Hubby chicken goujons then scallops plus salad chips and bread. Lovely ambiance, all the locals drinking, eating and chatting , really nice server . Definitely the place to eat in Port Charlotte.

Warning: this restaurant has recently been taken over and many of the great reviews reflect the previous owners and not the current ones. My wife and I had the seafood plate at £30 a head and it turned out to be a poor decision. The crab claws and langoustines were clearly overcooked and did not taste at all fresh. The scallops were fine, though. If you choose to eat here, avoid the seafood and go for a cheaper option. The staff were not particularly welcoming or friendly which was unusual for Islay in my experience. That was something I could have overlooked had the food been adequate. Try Port Mor Community Cafe along the road for a cheaper and more cheerful alternative.

We stayed at the Lochindaal hotel in port Charlotte in July 2021, the hotel room was very comfortable, large comfy, extra sofa style bed, fridge and large tv. The bathroom was beautiful also! Staff very accommodating and helpful! The seafood restaurant is part of the hotel- situated just as you enter port Charlotte. We had to go here for breakfast each morning it is just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. We were spoilt for choice! The breakfast was delicious and Paula who was serving us was so friendly and helpful. We also went for dinner to the seafood kitchen when’re we ordered the seafood plate! All good was so fresh and delicious! Paula had to show us how to eat some of the seafood!

We had a fabulous lunch at the Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen on Islay. Same company as the Lochindaal Hotel, but separate venue just along the road.My seafood plate (order 24 hours in advance) was superb; as fresh as you can get with a generous portion or crab, langoustines, scallops, chips, salad and bread. We ate here as a family of 5. The steak pie, mussels and fish stew were superb as were the starters. The £100 seafood platter was a bit of a let down though. The emphasis appears to be on quantity rather than quality. The scallops were good and the lobster was OK. The crab claws and prawns weren't great at all though. A couple of the crab claws smelt of ammonia and the prawns smelled suspect too. The staff were friendly and the service was good, but the overall experience was marred by the platter. Serves me right for for having crustaceans when there is no r in the month?

If the Lochindaal Hotel Restaurant is the same place as the Loch Indaal Seafood Kitchen, then we ate there and had the most amazing Seafood Platter for £100 on 19th July 2020. You order the seafood platter in advance and you get whatever is available locally at market fresh on the day, so it may differ from day to day as to what exactly is on your platter. Boy is it worth every penny of £100. It is supposed to be for two persons but would easily feed four. The platter is huge and ours was filled with two crabs, six crab claws, a whole lobster, scallops, and about 8 large langoustines. You also get chips and a small side salad with it. Everything was cooked to perfection. The Islay IPA was ice cold and absolutely great with the fish. Paula, our waitress, was brilliant and very friendly. She had even remembered that I had mentioned that it was my birthday on the night we ate there and she had got me a little chocolate cake with a candle on it and a free malt whisky too! What a star she was.Only one small criticism: Would have liked more salad and a side dish of pink seafood sauce (I know I am a total philistine) and tartare sauce and finger bowls and more napkins to clean our hands with.If this is NOT the same place as the Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen - then ignore this review as we ate there!

Seafood needs to be ordered 24 hours in advance and is subject to what can be Caught locally. We wanted to eat fresh seafood on our visit to Islay, and this place has an amazing seafood platter -- lobster, langoustines, crab claws, scallops, salad, chips, and bread. All fresh and delicious, and more than enough for the two of us -- we feasted until we couldn't eat any more! Note: must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance, as everything is locally sourced. By far the best meal we had on the island (not that our other meals weren't very good, it's just that this was a stand-out). Service lovely, nice selection of wine. We ate at the new Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen, after reading positive reviews of the seafood platter. As my partner wanted to try the salmon and prawn salad, I ordered the seafood plate at £25, rather than the platter at £100. The food arrived after about 30 minutes, but we had bread and wine meanwhile, so were not concerned about the wait. I was delighted to receive a bowl of mussels, which I had not ordered. They were in place of langoustines, which the fishermen had been unable to supply. As I like both, I was happy with the substitution, but having ordered 24 hours in advance, it would be a good idea to advise customers in advance or at least on arrival, in case of intolerance to or dislike of the replacement seafood. The scallops and crab claws were delicious. My partner's prawns and smoked salmon were enhanced with crabmeat and he thoroughly enjoyed his meal.

There seem to be some dated reviews of the Lochidaal Hotel (pub with food) so here's what we thought on our recent visit. The Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen is owned/run by the same people and is just down the road, also in Port Charlotte. That's the place to go for a bit more choice but seafood platters are on 24 hour order in both the Kitchen and the pub. There was not a lot of choice - no menu, just a few items written on a blackboard on the wall. We don't mind that but some things were 'off' the menu. They'd run out or something so we only had a choice of 3 starters and 3 or 4 mains. It was all OK. Service was slow as if the kitchen couldn't cope even though it was not that busy and the waiter was doing his best but quite a long wait so we didn't have dessert as we thought we'd never get away! For a more extensive pub menu go to The Port Charlotte Hotel.

Having had the seafood platter twice at this place under its previous guise/ownership, first one fabulous, second one terrible, when I discovered that the Lochindaal hotel had taken it over, I must admit when I booked our seafood platter this year I did so with some trepidation: would it be the same place, run in the same way as on our last disappointing visit, or would new ownership have brought better quality and standards?I'm happy to report that it turned out to be the latter! Although the price of the platter had risen to £100, it turned out to be the best we had ever eaten, and the biggest! At first I was a little underwhelmed at the presentation, which amounted to a great, steaming pile of crab claws and lobster pieces, along with the biggest, thickest scallops I've ever seen. All qualms about presentation were quickly forgotten, however, as we tucked into the sweetest, tenderest seafood I can remember eating. Everything cooked to perfection, the warm meat dropping out of the shells with minimal fiddling about. Just about perfect, in fact. The service was perhaps a little "informal" and lacked professionalism at times, but the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive, and we certainly didn't experience the long wait or chaotic atmosphere I have seen mentioned here in other reviews. For sure there is room for improvement (hence my rating of Very Good rather than Excellent), and I can't comment about any of the other food served here as we've only ever had the seafood platter. All I can say is that if our experience is typical then it's doubtful you will find better-cooked seafood anywhere on the island...and as anyone who knows Islay will appreciate, there is plenty of competition! Thanks to everyone at Lochindaal for a fabulous meal, which made our first wedding anniversary even more special!See you next year :)

We were really looking forward to this based on the reviews of the seafood platter (which has to be booked 24 hrs before) so perhaps the bar was set a bit high. Anyway - we arrived on time for our reservation but sat for a full hour waiting on service. It was pretty clear that everyone else in the restaurant was in a similar position - no one was getting served. The tall server (wearing shorts - odd in a restaurant) vanished leaving a line at the bar and a stand-in spent the rest of the time moaning about there being plenty work but no one wanting to do it...interesting caberet. The platter when it arrived was pretty much just a pile of steamed/boiled crustaceans, pretty flavourless and rubbery in texture. Maybe there had been a drama in the kitchen - but an apology or explanation would have been nice if that was the case. In general, everyone just roller their eyes and put up with it in that stoic British way...but in reality it fell way short of the mark when compared to yoru average Mediteranean cafe.

Dommage.

We booked in for the seafood platter and had been warned about the service from a few friends who had been before. We decided to take our chances as the platter sounded great. And it was.....when it finally arrrived 50 minutes after we got there. The restaurant was full with only 1 waiter looking after 20 covers. And he was manning the bar as well! Nice guy, trying his best but all the tables had long waits and we were no exception. When we asked for a cooler for our bottle of wine, all he could rustle up was a bowl of ice which didn’t fit the bottle, and our oyster starters had cracked shell in them. The platter as great when it finally arrived, very fresh, yummy scallops, prawns and a big lobster. No mussels although they were on the menu as included. We won’t be back, but if you can put up with a long wait, cramped restaurant and a faulty towers type service, the platter is good!

Had a lovely meal last night at the cosy Lochindaal yes it was only fish and chips but it was top quality fish and served with style and for a very modest amount mind you the desserts at £7.50 are a bit steep. Its a very informal place but very welcoming the little old lady I was with as treat for her loved her meal ---so two very happy customers---will I go again of course I will 5*****

We were here the third time for the seafood (first in 2012, second in 2014) and I have to say this time was extremely disappointing. Not only did the price for the Seafood Platter increase massively and the portion size shrank again, but even worse was that most of the Seafood arrived already cold at our table. Considering one platter costs 100 GBP I think you could expect that the food is at least warm. Therefore this was definitely our last time at the Lochindaal Hotel Restaurant.

Their Seafood Platter (24 hour advance order required) is to die for! £100 for a feast they say is good for 2 - 3 to share. We were 4 - admittedly not hungry teenagers - and it was ample for us. One of our group enjoyed his share of the lobster so much he ordered a whole one for himself for the following night (the rest of us selected from the standard menu and greatly enjoyed our choices)Good friendly pub too with a good selection of whiskies.

We enjoyed the seafood platter that had the best scallops and mussels I have ever had. No joke! Book in advance to make sure they have the seafood available for you.

The food was good. You could see and taste that somebody cooked it. I had the burger, fish'n'chips and something else I forgot. They were what you'd expect and no need to give an arm and leg. Seafood needs to be ordered 24 hours in advance. Looked good.

We were staying in a local B&B and needed an evening meal. Yan's Kitchen was closed and the menu prices at the Port Charlotte Hotel were very high. We were delighted to find this pub with a very friendly welcome, low priced rooms (wished we had known this before) and excellent moderately priced food. The service was good and they also sold the full range of beers brewed in the new local brewery on Islay.

Just stop here if you want a very good evening diner! Small lounge with just a couple of tables. So make reservations if you definitly want to eat in here. We were with a couple of friends. 2 of us took the beef burger from the menu and it was delicious. 2 of us shared a seafood platter (order 24h in advance)! Man, it was food to die for! More than an hour of pleasure on your plate!3 tips: don't eat to much during that day, don't eat to much fries or bread if you want to eat it al, see if there is a lobster underneath al the crab and langoustines and perhaps eat if first and not last (if you have almost enough). A must go to if you are in Islay!

Had a great family meal here, sea food was fab and the company throughout the restaurant was lovely. Very very tight squeeze inside and could do with a lick of paint particularly outside but we had a lovely night here.

Really busy nearly every night so booking is a must. Tables are very cramped together and the seafood is definately the highlight although the rest of the menu is pretty standard pub grub. The place could really do with a makeover but maybe that would change the whole experience! Its very old fashioned, a bit dingy but we all enjoyed our food and the staff were pleasant and attentive.

We spent a couple of nights here as part of our holiday touring the Scottish islands. The hotel is small and retro in decoration -it could really benefit from a make over but we enjoyed its laid back atmosphere . If you're after somewhere fancy then try somewhere else.! The staff are attentive and helpful and also really entertaining! The food is fabulous and its reputation for seafood is well deserved ....simply prepared but extremely tasty. The hotel is a good base for exploring Islay and it suited us fine.

I had heard tell of the Lochindaal’s famous seafood platter and it didn’t disappoint. Yes it is pricey but as a special treat it is worth it. The scallops were my favourites but there was stiff competition from the sweet lobster tails. The bucket of chips were an addition too far but these were enjoyed by those in our arty not partaking of the platter. I was looking for a nice dry white wine to accompany this exquisite meal and almost missed the Sancerre. Although there is a vast selection on malts on offer at the bar (with £150 a nip being the most expensive), the wine selection is extremely limited. The few mussels that were uneaten were taken away in a container with instructions on how to best enjoy the next day. The beef curry and steak and ale pie were enjoyed but for me, the seafood platter was unbeatable.

Ate here twice during our stay on the island. I ordered a seafood platter on one day which they were happy to modify as I was the only seafood eater and the usual ones are to share. The scallops were the largest I have ever had and the entire meal was memorable. The people who work there are great and the selection of ale and whiskey was superb. One night we also had the fish and chips which was also excellent. One of the bars is dog friendly.

Step in for a drink, play some pool, enjoy your time. The staff is very friendly and helpful! Didn't eat there this time, but will try to do that next time on Islay.

We pre-booked the famous seafood platter for my birthday tea. It has to be said this is an expensive meal at £100 but we 2 hungry travellers struggled to get through the mountain of food presented to us and it could easily stretch to 3 or maybe even 4 with a couple of extras. The photos don't do the plate justice, it really was huge, also beautifully presented and accompanied by delicious crispy chips and soft bread. You need to allow a couple of hours to get through everything and just enjoy the experience, it's very rare to find something like this so take your time...... Other food was served too and it looked like good honest grub. A fairly basic nautical themed setting but feels right and perfectly comfortable. Good selection of whiskys too (of course) and welcoming staff.

My favorite restaurant on Islay, both for the food and the atmosphere. We didn't order ahead, but enjoyed a fantastic beef chili and steak pie. I hear the seafood is amazing. Also a huge relief to be in a welcoming, unpretentious setting where locals and tourists sit side-by-side -- sometimes speaking, sometimes not, and on occasion laughing at the bartender's antics.

Tatty is the first word that comes to mind. Low end and ramshackle fit and finish. The "Dining Room" is a few tables in the bar that can seat about 24 total. This place is for basic pub grub with one knock your socks off dish: the seafood platter. My friends report that it is very good, but expensive, and not very hot, at least on the night we were there. The room made up on the heat side though! Toasty. Service was pleasant but slow. Seven of us booked in for 8PM and got our meals at 9:30PM! Some said they would go back, but for me there are better places for food, even in this small village. The Guinness Extra Cold however, was excellent!

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

When open (it has now closed permanently); it was a great wee eating house! We went there often. It will be sadly missed, used by many locals, tourists and organisations as an affordable restaurant.
