Dont be put off my first impressions of this hotel. The hotel is under new ownership and are refurbishing the hotel. The rooms are lovely and modern with wide screen TV . There are four rooms and i belive to be 5 eventually. The position is stunning right by the water and if you lucky you can see dolphins, seals and otters. we spent the evening watching the sailing boats going past and the small ferry which runs hourly and the amazing sunset. The new owners are lovely and go out of there way to make you feel welcome. We will go back for sure .. thank you for the perfect stay

Visited here recently. It doesn’t do food, and selection of wine is poor if you wanted a glass! Very quiet. Did hear a rumour it may be up for sale. Having said this the views of the Sound of Mull are amazing!!

I cannot comment on the food as we did not eat, but the beer was good. Everyone looked friendly and welcoming when we got there despite many bad reports about the landlord.

Enjoyed a meal of fried trout which was succulent and crunchy, tasty, fried vegetables - good assortment - with a helping of golden mashed potatoes (achieved by mixing ordinary potatoes with sweet potatoes - a nice combination. Finished off with a trio of sorbets (mango, lemon, lime & lemon) which were very refreshing on a summer's evening. Bellhaven Best isn't my favourite beer, but it was clear, cool and innocuous - but next time I'll choose the full-bodied stout which is on tap.

Arrived for lunch around 12.15pm. Park our car opposite, old man with electric saw in his hand appeared to be cutting / trimming a bush. We walked over and expected a friendly greeting - instead " what you looking for" We were taken aback and replied "lunch" - "what is available ?" response i'll speak with inside and off he went. inside with door closing behind him, We followed, once inside he told us menu was on board and it would take a while 20.30 minutes for oven to become hot. My wife & I looked each other, turned and left, thanking him as we left., Drove to the cabin next to the ferry jetty and difference was chalk & cheese. While there two other people arrived at the cabin, who we had seen earlier walking to Lochaline Hotel as we left,.This is summer mid-June and would suggest improvement to hotel owns / staff attitude.

Manners and customer service go a long way, don't expect it here. Booked a table, walked in, gave our name, 'menu' as he pointed at a blackboard. We weren't even sure if the area we were in was where we were to eat. Came over to take our order but we hadn't decided, looked at his watch and said, 'well got another 3 people due in' and walked away. Eventually gave our order and a lovely woman came through and showed us to the restaurant area. No atmosphere, food was good though my friends lamb was very fatty. We eat and left, whereas if it was more welcoming we would have stayed for more drinks. Everyone who came in after us did the same. Totally losing out on money coming in the door. Think it's a must do burden rather than a career choice for the man.

“Can we eat here tonight”? Have you booked? Asked mine host, “No I said” 7 pm he said, do you need my name? No he said, and closed the door. Such was our introduction to the hotel. Certainly different. We came back on the dot at 7pm, had a beer, ordered Haddock and Chips and sat to drink and wait. We were ushered into a dining room, as quiet as the grave, zero atmosphere, however the food was very well cooked and presented. Time to sell up and move on I thought.

Scotland’s know for it’s warm hospitality - right? That’s generally true unless you come to Lochaline Hotel. We popped in for a drink and the following night ate with a group of friends. The guy at the bar was the most sullen and unhelpful person. There were 16 of us, and for some reason we’d to order at the bar before heading to the restaurant. Food was fine- basic pub grub and restaurant staff a bit more pleasant. Venison casserole and steak pie were both nice. However a smile would have gone down well too!

We have visited this hotel for pub meals every time we visit Lochaline (every second year we holiday here) Yes the pub is in need of refurbishment but the dining area at the back extension where you have your meal is lovely and welcoming and has a country cottage feel. When we dined as a family of 7 in July, the food was wonderful. We all ordered different dishes and every one of us was very impressed by the standard of food. It was definitely much better quality and dining experience than when we were last here in 2016. The prices are really good too, with mains ranging from around a tenner to about £13. The kids all devoured the puddings too (sticky toffee pudding and hot chocolate fudge cake). Give this hotel a try for dinner. We will definitely be back!

Food is good. Booking for dinner necessary but odd since an early slot was the only one offered but the dining room half empty. Chef wants to get home early?

Fantastic spot for a hotel, but so underwhelming. The bar is small and straight out of the seventies. It has a pool table in the middle of it which means everyone has to move when a game is being played. Dour barman serves locals first when you have been waiting longer, and doesn't think to fill up fridge when you have drank the last cold bottle of beer. Two creaky tables outside do not constitute a beer garden. Now for the positives, the lady of the house and the lady in the restaurant could not have been nicer. The food choice was a lot of meat, fish and scampi one pasta dish for vegetarians and no vegan food although they did produce a vegan dish that wasn't on the menu. This place has the potential to be fantastic it just needs a bit of imagination and tlc.

Despite the reviews and the comments of locals, we ventured in for a bar supper. Once beyond the bar and into the restaurant, we were very well looked after by a charming head waitress. A lot of laughs, banter and good craic. We all had the fish and chips, and it was superb. Lovely fresh fish and a crisp, mouthwatering batter. The home-made bread and butter pudding at the end was a special treat! SO - dont be put off by the gloomy owner at the bar, press on and you will enjoy.

The food and kitchen staff during our visit to their restaurant were actually very good, if it wasn't for the extremely miserable owner/manager I'd recommend a visit to their restaurant which serves good home cooked food with healthy portion sizes and (in the restaurant only) good service.

Stayed here many times, always made to feel welcome, the food is good simple food well cooked a served with a smile. The bar is not expensive and very cozy. It's a small hotel in a small village, don't expect the Hilton and you won't be disappointed. I'll be back, and always recommend it to my pals.

After a long drive down to the village, fancied a bit of lunch! Met at the door by the owner who asked us what we wanted! No food due to no chef and shut the door on us! Never in my life made to feel so unwelcome an establishment! Maybe he did us a favour! If the food was like the welcome! Best avoided!

The odd thing about people is that they sometimes react to how they are treated, so if people visit somwhere expecting grumpy staff, then that's what they'll find. When we visited the food was nice pub grub. The waiting staff were good and the landlord helped my non whisky-drinking wife with a choice of whisky which she enjoyed.

We were staying in one of the little cottages a short walk from the hotel so decided to wander down for a drink. Really disappointed by the poor choice of drink available. The hotel feels a bit run down and unwelcoming and everything feels as if it's begrudged. We did manage to book in for a meal one night although we felt as if we were imposing on them and when one of our party asked for some extra gravy we were told in no uncertain terms "there's gravy in the pie" . On the plus side the food was good and reasonably priced.

Although the welcome was not exactly offensive and we never actually got to sample the food in the end, the atmosphere and impression given was distinctly unhelpful to tired, cold and wet travellers. Barely civil rather than friendly. No one was going the extra mile in this establishment. We had hoped to find a cosy heart in the great village of Lochaline to have a wee bit to eat and warming drink but instead found a drab, almost grim 'hotel'. Don't bother.

We were staying at the visitors pontoons in Loch Aline, which is a short walk from the Lochaline Hotel. When arriving at the hotel we were greeted with a sign stating that on that on Mondays and Tuesdays (it was a Monday) food was only served to residents. We stayed for a drink but regreted it. The choice of beer was poor and the wine of very poor quality. They had run out of soda water and sparking mineral water. The bar area has a pool table in the middle, which makes it very cramped and uncomfortable. Service wasn't at all friendly (which is very unusual for Scotland).

First of all the hotel were very understanding with my booking as my friends and I were coming by boat and the forecast was not good. I initially cancelled then they were able to fit us in at short notice when we arrived. Varied menu with some unusual dishes as well as the usual favourites. I had Misa Broth which was like a seafood tureen served with risotto rice. Slightly spicy but delicious. Meringue with fruit was something else!!!! Nothing fancy but good down to earth food and hospitality. Not sure why it had some poor reviews as this was just what we wanted.

I don't understand the two critical reviews at all.We called for lunch and were made very welcome. It was pouring with rain and we chose the view of the sound from the bar rather than the restaurant which was offered to us.We had an enjoyable meal served by I presume the host and hostess who happily chatted to us and were very friendly. The food was excellent as was the local Beer.We enjoyed the food so much that we drove 22 miles round trip another evening for dinner and this was very good value too.Lochaline is a bit of a gastronomic desert with little alternative but we were more than happy here. The reception alone was far better than the alleged up market place that shares its name with a big place in Washington DC.We will be back for more.

A varied menu of typical "pub food" along with interesting specials (fresh sea bass, salmon fillet and a wide range of local meat). We were seriously impressed with the quality of the meals we enjoyed here, it was very well organised (one evening was particularly busy, booking advised at weekends).

Dirty washroom, poor choice of beer. One of those places where there are 15 men in the bar and no women. Actually, though, they did say hello, rather than the usual staring in silence. Also a long walk from the centre of the village, and a very long walk from the visitors' pontoon.

Booked a meal deal a month ago. Day before arrival got e mail asking if we wanted to upgrade to a meal deal. Arrived to a big electronic display showing restaurant and meal deal. Told at reception no evening meals available we could have a refund. Very poor. Nearest alternative Morrisons cafe (which had practically nothing on the menue or McDonalds. Ruined our stay .

Roads End Cafe is a lifesaver at this time of the year, we were on the NC500 and fancied a bite to eat when we got to John o Groats. It is such a basic cafe but still serves hot toasties/sandwiches, soup and small cakes/scones. The lady that served us was lovely, so welcoming and willing to go the extra mile, she even recommended the haggis and cheese toastie which I couldn't turn down. Since it was so quiet, it was takeaway only but she let us sit in due to the gale force winds outside. I have to say the toasties are the best I have had in a while and not even that expensive despite the location, absolutely fantastic. It is a little gem if you're looking for something eat when you reach the most northernly point in Scotland!
