Stayed at the hotel for a surprise 40th birthday celebration. There was 10 adults and the staff had set a table up in a seperate room for all of us. we all had the 3 course meal from the A La Carte menu & the service from all the staff including the bar staff was out of this world - we simplyy couldn't have asked for more.

Food at this restaurant during our stay was absolutely first class. The effort that goes into the food here is obvious. Superb chef. Love having the pre starter and pre dessert and to provide these for the children too is excellent. Once again the service was first class. Antonio, Helen and Shannon (hope I got the latter name correct ) all went out of there way to ensure our restaurant experience was excellent.

Food and service truly excellent. A level of sophistication beyond what you could expect for rural N Wales. Free hors d'oeuvres. A little let down by the look of the place, but again, for N Wales, better than most.

We stayed 3 nights at the Seiont Manor Hotel (excellent -- reviewed separately), chosen partly on the basis of good reviews of its Llwyn-y-Brain restaurant, and had dinner just the first night. We found the menus (both table d'hote and a la carte) not very exciting considering the two AA rosettes, and unfortunately some of the items chosen were rather a let down. My wife had a lemon and crayfish risotto starter, where there was no taste of lemon and the tiny pieces of crayfish were also tasteless. I unfortunately also chose a risotto as main course -- pea and truffle risotto. Plenty of peas but no sign or taste of any truffles! The rice was rather gloopy, and the whole lot was just dumped on the plate with little attempt at presentation. But my wife's lamb main was excellent. Desserts were O.K. but nothing special -- can't remember exactly but I had some sort of cheesecake with ice cream, and the ice cream had ice crystals in the middle. Overall rather disappointing considering its reputation for innovative cooking, and the price: for 3 courses £37 for the table d'hote menu and £47 for the a la carte. Another gripe is the price of the wine. Of course one expects a hefty mark-up, and I am well used to prices in this sort of classy hotel, but I consider prices here to be excessive with almost all reds at £30 and up (there is one red at £23, one at £26 and a couple at £29) -- a good wine list (see the website), but the usual sort of wines at the bottom end -- I paid £36 for an Australian Grenache, which was O.K. but not worth that price. I reckon most of the wines are up to £10 over what they should be in this sort of place. It was noticeable that none (I think) of the other tables ordered a bottle of wine, probably a good indicator that people are prepared to pay just so much but not over the top prices. I should add that the breakfast was superb, with a large range of cold items plus an extensive cooked menu -- but even here the chef couldn't cook a boiled egg -- an order for "very runny" came as rock solid and had to be sent back, although he/she got it right the next two mornings! On a high note, the service was excellent throughout, with friendly, attentive staff.

Ate here while staying at the Seiont Manor Hotel and really wish we had not. Both at dinner and breakfast we stood in the entrance to the restaurant for quite a few minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge that we were there and to be shown to a table. Staff were quick to take food orders and clear tables at both meal sittings until it was time to leave or sign the bill then they were no where to be found. The evening menu had limited choice, although starters and puddings were good the main courses were not so, my Welsh lamb was so tough and gristly that I only managed to hack - it wasn't possible to cut and swallow two mouthfuls, that was enough, the pork was tough too but edible, unfortunately our waiter came to the table to check our meals very soon after we had been served our meal and I hadn't at that time tried the meat. I informed the waiter when he cleared the table that the lamb was tough and he took away my plate saying he would speak to the chef so you can imagine my annoyance when I was presented with the bill with the lamb dish on it, it took speaking to 2 further people to have it removed from the bill. I am shocked at the yearly double AA rosette culinary experience awards going back to 2008 on the wall in the restaurant, all I can imagine is they must have known when the inspectors were coming!

We stayed on a Friday night and there was only us at our 7:30 reservation, there was good choice, a mixture of meats and fish. We chose a la carte, a chacutarie platter ( small one ) of choirizo, salmon, welsh cheese and homemade bread rolls. Then for a main we had pork loin, which was a great size. For pudding we had a victoria sponge that the chef made as a birthday cake, this was Huge, so we took the rest home. Overall very nice and very well looked after.

We were staying at the hotel for 2 nights as part of a wedding party, and ate at the restaurant on the night of our arrival. The menu is limited with 4 choices per course, and we were told straight away that 1 choice was no longer available. What we had was tasty enough, but very small portions (the norm for these type of restaurants). The real let down was the service: wine spilt on the table, 3 meals delivered instead if 4 due to poor reading of the order, yelling across the restaurant to see if we've finished! This is not what you would expect for the ~£200 bill for 4 people.

A quick scan of the men suggests an ambitious chef in the kitchen and aspirations of accolades in the dining room. Both are wonderfully realised with dishes that border on Michelin stardom. The trio of meats was just such a dish. Perfectly pink venison, beautiful moist welsh black beef and melting belly pork with crispy crackling. A bonus element of braised pork cheek in cabbage was welcome. The purées and vegetables complimented it beautifully. I suspect the chef had also eaten at the Crown in Whitebrook and taken a leaf out of James Sommerin's book as he serves a similar but not superior dish. That should be praise enough but I have to mention the engine of any good restaurant. No, not the kitchen, (its a room in which the engine runs), but the staff. On the one hand we have Helen, serving up generous portions of perfectly cooked local produce at breakfast. She is the perfect host, welcoming, friendly, and gently guiding service to run without a hitch. I want one! On the other hand we have Jon, easing you into evening service in a sublime restaurant atmosphere created by its host. If only all maitre d's were so knowledgeable. Jon knows the details of not just every dish but every element on it, no mean feat given the extensive menu.I would like to thank both Jon and Helen for making our stay that bit more memorable. Warmest Regards to you both and very best wishes for the future. Lee Cox

Celebrated our daughter's 21st birthday by having Sunday Lunch at the Llwyn y Brain Restaurant with all the family. The food was better than we had expected and the service second to none especially the warm welcome and light hearted banter with Helen Hatton. She made our day! Would definitely recommend and will be back - our son is 21 at the end of the month!
