Me and my partner have returned today from camping this weekend at Rosedale Abbey. We arrived at the closest pub to Rosedale Abbey on the Friday night, around 9pm. I asked if they were still serving food, to be told they stop at 9pm. I then asked if there is anywhere else nearby that sells food. The gentleman then recommended this place, he said they serve food until 10pm. We then set off in our car hungry and looking forward to a nice pub meal. For my main I had the homemade lasagne (£12.95) which is served with chips and salad. You can choose to substitute your chips for either roast, jacket, new or croquette potatoes, for no extra charge. I chose croquette potatoes. My partner had the deep fried wholetail scampi (£12.95) Both of our meals were delicious. It would have been nice though if the lasagne was served with garlic bread.I had some amaretto and coke to drink and my partner had a diet coke. The food was very filling and they have a specials board with some tasty meals on, such as a hot pork and stuffing sandwich. The young lady who served me was very friendly too. I would definitely come here again.

At 1325 feet high, this is the 3rd highest pub up North after Tan Hill Inn (1732 feet) & Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria (1389 feet). There are14 rooms for accommodation, ranging from £25 to £48, depending on what room chosen. There are 6 vegetarian options on the main course menu. The pub is massive inside, lots of sections & rooms though the ceilings are low down & there is lots of dark wooden beams so the place feel darker & moodier inside.8 real ales.Piano in room on right hand side.Lots of bands have played there in the back room & they’ve had a music festival too, lots of the pictures from various bands are on the wall in the back room to the rear of the dining room.4 ladies toilets.Friendly staff. Various pub merchandise available to get, including polo shirts £12.95, postcards 25p each etc.Large car park to left hand side.Pub is said to be from 1553 AD & was set up by Friar Monks.Moor bus services run to / from the pub every Fri, Sat & Sun & bank holiday Monday’s.But do check the Moor bus website for up to date information before you travel on it, just incase they are any changes before you go there. There is a current bus time table on pub sign in car park.Nice grassed beer garden with benches to left hand side just before car park. They have had bad snow here in the past judging by the pictures on the walls inside.Specials menu available on blackboard as well as a normal printed menu.Good sized decent plates of food being served.Inside fairly busy.

Such a lovely pub in the middle of nowhere! We booked a table for dinner and were not disappointed. My husband said it was the best pie he had ever had and the children loved their meals. Would highly recommend if you're in the area! Although you might not be able to finish as the portions were huge!

Enormous portions and a wide range of beer. The bar has a great atmosphere whilst the drive to The Lion means you see the most spectacular scenery. The Hot Shot Chicken Parmesan was delicious, although there was a wait for the food due to the immense popularity of the venue.

We've been coming here for years and the food has always been exceptional. However, on this occasion, my meal was dreadful. I ordered fish pie from the specials menu. It looked ghastly and tasted even worse. Only a few flakes of salmon, some indeterminate white fish, and two shrivelled prawns. It was too dry and the fish would have benefitted from a sauce. It came with chips which were more like scraps. My companions were very happy with their steak and ale pie which was huge and full of meat and gravy, though served with the aforementioned scraps. Maybe I made a bad choice. It's about time the menu was revised as it is limited in its offering and the specials menu has been unaltered over the last year or so and really should be incorporated with the main menu.

so we was told it was worth a visit , so we rode the 2 hours to get to it .....thats where the pleasure ended , for a start it certainly isnt biker friendly , then you enter the scrum down for a table but just because you find a table doesnt mean you can keep it.My wife found a table not occupied and in need of a clean but it was a table she was then asked did you book this table, some what puzzled as it was a pub we said no we was then asked how many of us there was we stated 3 people and which point with the most attitude ive ever seen the waitress left us only to return to say that the empty table was reserved, no sign or anything on it but it was reserved so we enquired where we could sit , again with a mass of attitude you'll have to find some where in there (meaning the bar) ironically we had come for an evening meal .....so we gave them the benefit of the doubt and had a drink only to over hear the waiting time for food was at 45 minutes, we also discovered it was a free for all on tables whilst waiting, no system in place to ensure those waited longest was seated next, terrible waiting staff and disorganised and if im honest not the best menu ive seen, its one to miss out if your enjoying day it will certainly dampen the spirits, there are far happier pub/food places near hear

We stayed at the Lion Inn as part of our Coast-to-Coast walk. What a surprise to come upon it from the west, from sheep-filled, wind-swept moors to find a lively, 500-year-old pub and inn! We reveled in its expanded menu, comfortable room (including a very old, wonderful four-poster bed) and yes, large portions of delicious food. Without the Lion Inn, our day would have been far longer and far less enjoyable.

Set high on the windswept moors this inn would seem welcoming whatever the British climate is throwing at you.Surprisingly spacious with various bar areas, and a more formal restaurant, there is a good menu providing a wide variety of snacks and full meals. We had lunchtime snacks - some were starters from the main menu and others were snacks - quantities were generous and the food quality very good. Serves "proper" beers.Bar service was friendly if a little slow at times.Parking etc should not be a problem for anyone.

Arrived at The Red Lion feeling a bit 'off' and hoping for a bed for the night. The owner, Brian, advised that all rooms were full. I felt my stomach plummet. It was now 7pm and there was nowhere else to walk to even if I had the energy, which I didn't. Brian obviously saw my distress and said he would do what he could, The pub was so busy with people everywhere, food being served in every direction. all looking wonderful I might add. I am sure the last thing he needed was to be taken away from his main task of running the pub but he spent a good 15-20 getting me accommodated by someone who would pick me up. I cannot thank him enough. If this is 'Yorkshire hospitality then it gets a massive 10 out of 10 from me. Thank you.

I’d been here a couple of times before but not for over 10 years. It’s a nice old traditional pub about 500 years old. It’d be a great pub anywhere as it’s a really nice old building full of atmosphere. But when you put in location, it really is stunning. A fantastic place on Blakey Ridge overlooking Farndale on one side and Rosedale on the other. It’s up there at the top with great pub views. Good range of decent beer and wide range of reasonably priced food. Not gastro but good value pub grub. We had sandwiches and chips and they were good.

The location on top of the moors couldn't have been better, and it was wonderful to walk towards it on the Coast to Coast walk. However, the room was a bit cramped and very noisy on a Sunday afternoon (room 5 is immediately above the beer garden). Dinner was very tasty but we were actually put off by the huge portions - just not necessary - we could have split one meal between 2 and still have been satisfied. Breakfasts isn't till 8, whichever everyone around us was complaining about - the majority of guests were walkers and just wanted to get going. No porridge on the breakfast menu. Altogether not quite what we wanted. Parts of the inside are fascinatingly old, though.

The very quirky layout of what looks like a small Inn on the top of the Yorkshire moors we were led to a large dinning area that was bright with spaced out tables and chairs not crammed in like some places. Mediocre food in a stunning locationReview of The Lion InnPending reviewI went to meet friends for dinner at The Lion. The setting is stunning, with a marvellous view, which you really can't appreciate from the dark, claustrophobic interior of the pub! However, it's an old building built to withstand harsh weather, so it's not unexpected. The menu was uninspiring, classic pub grub such as gamon and chips. I chose spinach and ricotta channelling, and it was one of the blandest meals I've ever had. The chips were also very soggy. To give them their due, the service was good and the puddings were OK, but there are many, many better pubs in the area and I won't be returning to The Lion.More

One of my parents favourite places, they have been going for years. I booked to have his father's day meal here two weeks ago. The pub is divided into two areas, the bar and restaurant. In the bar area you chose a vacant seat and order your food at the bar with your table number, the restaurant is waitress service. If you want the restaurant it's best to book as the pub is packed each time I've been. Saying that, there has always been a lot of staff on and the turn over is pretty fast. I've only ever dined in the restaurant but I have observed the meals being delivered in the bar and they look just as impressive as in the restaurant and the portions are large. Their home made Yorkshire puddings look magnificent. The bar area is dog friendly and the dress code is casual, you'll find many ramblers stopping off on their journey for a bite to eat. My dad reckons their T-Bone is the best he's tasted and is happy to travel the 120 mile trip to have one.

Dinner portions were completely over-the-top. Who needs four lamb chops?! However everything was freshly cooked and tasty which is an achievement considering the number of diners in the restaurant. Sadly breakfast was disappointing: all a little cold as if it had been left on the side waiting to be served. Perhaps not enough waiting staff? The least enjoyable breakfast out of all on our Coast-to-Coast walk.

A building dating 1553, given to the crouching monks that's now a gastro pub with some accommodation. It is on a ridge in the moors about half an hour from Cayton bay or Scarborough. There are several rooms with plenty of seating and large fireplaces that are used in winter time. It's a fab place to go trecking from thays also dog friendly. Now the food is really exceptional, a all locally sourced where possible and portions are massive, both starters and mains. Pricing is as a good quality pub averaging 12 to 14 pounds and 20 for a 10 to 12oz rib-eye steak. They have a selection of real ales and a good selection of wines etc. Great staff with a very helpful and friendly attitude. Make an effort to visit this place, you won't be dissapointed. Stopped here on a whim after a day out exploring. We had intended to just opt for a main but ended up staying for a really lovely three course meal because the menu looked so good and ambiance so beautiful. It was a good decision, fantastic quality and expertly prepared. We sat in the restaurant area, which is perfect for a special celebration as it has a very romantic, rustic appearance, having table cloths, flowers and candles. We had fillet steak for our main and got a lovely chunky melt in the mouth piece of meat. The ambience and quality is so right here, just good old fashioned Yorkshire hospitality without any pretence or showmanship. I did think that the portions were a little on the large size though, particularly if you want to have three courses and feel pampered not podged! Also I think some teenagers may have sabotaged the choice of music as it was a bit weird and "Wood stocky" on certain tracks but then again, maybe my own children are right and I am in fact, just old. There's really nothing to complain about, it was great and I would highly recommend. Thanks for a lovely evening.

After booking a spontaneous trip with my partner and 9 month old puppy we found this pub on a dog friendly Yorkshire website. We decided as it was a nice day to visit the moors and fell upon this pub we had earlier researched. What a find! The pub was pretty busy considering it was early afternoon on a Thursday and literally in the middle of nowhere. We ordered the cod and chops and a steak and mushroom pie. We were not disappointed. Portion size was amazing and enough for the dog to have a mini feast. The pie was filled with good quality moist meat, lots of gravy and a little pastry top. My partners fish was really nice too and really good value for the size. We also order one honeycomb cheesecake to share and after it arrived the lady (Gaynor) came back with another one as the first one was slightly missing a chunk at the end. We didnt notice but we were delighted at the gesture as it went down a treat. Great value, great prices, plenty of food to fed an army and in the middle of some beautiful moors. It was also really nice that the staff were so welcoming of our dog and also lovely to hear them talk to the regulars providing a very comforting atmosphere.

Disappointed with the food and service, not the Lion Inn I remember from previous visitsWent Yesterday for a family Sunday dinner. but ended up choosing something different as they do not do mashed potatoes for Sunday lunch. (i know not everywhere does so happy to choose from main menu)DownsideShown to table quickly, after a while I had to go to find the staff to order drinks. We also ordered drinks with the food order, however, the staff did not ask again if we needed drinks throughout the 2 hours of being there.Food took 45/60 mins to come. I don't mind waiting for freshly cooked food or if told there is a wait time but not the case. The pork and stuffing bun was ok, but the 'stuffing' was the dried and mix with water stuff. Should have guessed it would be, it didn't state homemade stuffing. The children's sausages were dry and cheap and possibly deep fried from frozen (not sure but looked that way). Seriously you are near so many farms could you not get good butchers sausages. UpsideChips tasted good and salad was fresh. The gammon and steak pie were good according to the other members of family (the gravy over the pie tasted very shop bought was the only negative comments from them).SummeryI feel that the food needs some TLC and the staff need to be on the ball asking people want drinks, it helps with profits. The setting is lovely and would visit again for a drink or maybe bar food/sandwich. But would not go for the restaurant food which is a shame.I few changes such as local butcher’s sausages and homemade stuffing/gravy etc could lift this food from average to worth coming back for.The place is very busy and an almost guaranteed foot fall, so you do not have to do this, but that's not the point is it?Staff seemed friendly enough but needed to Liase with customers better, maybe it was late on a busy day, so they were tired.I really would have liked to give it a better rating but I was genuinely disappointed after driving 40 mins to get there and I do know they don’t profess to be any thing more than a pub grub place so wasn’t expecting the Ritz.

What a location! Their business card says 'on top of the moors' and yes it is. Great for walking on the moors and ideal for a drink and a meal to relax in. This is what I would call a typical old worldly type pub / restaurant.Yes, dogs are allowed.Good choice of food and drinks along with pleasant service being offered.

We have been to Blakey (Lion ) quite a few times, and always enjoyed the food and service here. After our last visit which exceeded our other visits. The food was spot on and the service was faultless. I would recommend any-one that likes to go out for a nice quiet meal, to go here. I would be surprised if they didn't enjoy it.

we took the dog out for a nice long scenic walk, and then enjoyed a great lunch, as we warmed up by the fireplace - lovely setting, great service, nice specials on the chalk board in the bar area - looking forward to our next visit !

Used to be a really lovely place, but after our last visit we've changed our minds. Locals push in at the bar and don't respect people were there before them, and worst still the staff perpetuate this by putting the locals first and ignoring outsiders!

I have driven past the Lion Inn at Blakey ridge many times and often wondered, even during spells of inclement weather, why so many vehicles were parked outside. Well my questions were answered when I paid a visit during a mild flurry of snow on 28th March. On entering the Lion Inn, it felt like a cosy oasis of calm. Many of the customers had obviously been striding the moors and were tucking into meals, which as I passed looked very appetising. The guy serving behind the bar pulled a pint of beer to perfection. I ordered mince, dumplings, chips and veg, an ideal choice on a chilly afternoon. Suffice to say, if Carlsberg made fried chips, I doubt they would be as good as the chips served here. Probably the best chips I’ve tasted. Oh yes, the mince and dumplings were pretty good as well. Would I pay a return visit? Be assured I certainly will.

High up on the Yorkshire Moors you will come across the Lion Inn. It is a real olde worlde cosy pub, just as you could imagine. It has a large menu with a traditional "old school" feel to it. Some iconic dishes: starters - Prawn cocktail, breaded mushrooms, deep fried brie. Main courses - all types of steaks, gammon steak & eggs, Old Peculiar casserole, chicken supreme and so on. The food is lovely, the service friendly, the open coal fire gives it a warm cosy appeal, and the surrounding views are beautiful, be it rain, snow or sunshine. A must to visit and enjoy a meal.

What a lovely place to stay. Being a rather chilly week in March, we could not of wished for a better cottage to stay in. Very comfortable, homely, a pint of milk in the fridge along with a bottle of proseco. What more of a welcome could you wish for. Placed on the edge of Kirbymoorside, with the market town centre just around the corner. A bakers, butchers, green groser all there. Lovely pubs to eat in. Two small shops to get the necessities you want, and all within 6 miles of Pickering. Thoroughly recommend you try Howe Green Cottage and Kirbymoorside.

We visited here on a freezing cold foggy day. The pub is unassuming from the outside, but warm, cosy, and absolutely chock full of character on the inside, with thick stone walls and roaring fires, a well stocked bar, lovely dining room, and even a piano! We ordered the roast dinners, my partner had lamb, and I had roast beef. Not the sorry excuse for roast dinners seen elsewhere, my plate was fully half covered by thickly carved beef, a massive Yorkshire pudding added to the dish. My partner had 3 half inch thick carved slices of lamb. All accompanied by delicious gravy. A great place for lunch on an extremely chilly day.

My birthday treat a winters walk in North Yorkshire followed by a fabulous fireside dinner at the Lion. What a super place. The food was lovely I had the mussels then nut roast my hubby enjoyed fish cake then a massive beef dinner. I was expecting it to be empty on January 14th how wrong I was it was packed to the gills! So glad we booked in advance. The number of diners did not affect the quality or portions of the food served. We will be back. Thank you for making my birthday day so special x

After a 3.5 hour walk around Blakey Ridge the children were hungry so we decided to drop in to the Lion Inn for something to eat. It was fairly busy for a cold January day, lots of people in the bar enjoying food and drinks with their dogs too. We got a table straight away in the restaurant and quickly ordered starters and Sunday dinners all round. The food came promptly, fish cakes, prawn cocktail and deep fried Brie. Sunday dinners followed, Roast Lamb and Turkey for my son. The food was hot and tasty which was very welcoming as we were quite cold after our walk. Thick slices of lamb, roasties and new potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, 4 veg and a jug of gravy each. Couldn’t manage dessert on this occasion but they did sound yummy, maybe next time.

Staying nearby at Rosedale for Christmas we decided to have Christmas eve dinner at the Lion on Blakey Ridge and were not disappointed. Its a unique venue in that its fairly remote and sits on a ridgeline with Rosedale to one side and Farndale to the other - on a good day you can see for miles. The setting is very nice, the dining room has an open fire and there is privacy should you need it. An ample sized car park plus its an easy place to find too. The menu offers a good selection of food and the portions are very generous. The staff were lots of fun, friendly and very good at their job - the food arrived piping hot, on hot plates and was well presented. As you would expect in Yorkshire there is a good selection of beers and the Theakston Old Peculiar Pale Ale is a winner. Its also very good value for money - neither drinks or food are overpriced. Well worth a visit, maybe best to call ahead and book for weekends etc - its very popular!

Lovely pub.Our food arrived in a reasonable time, was piping hot and utterly delicious! We were checked on by staff half way through so felt looked after. The only down side was the cups the tea was served in, they were very wide so the tea went cold very quickly and the handles were so tiny my friend couldnt pick his up as his fingers are arthritic.

What a treat to stay on the highest overnight stop on the Coast to Coast Walk(390 metres above sea level). Surrounded by history took us back in time -esp. as Australians! The rooms and beds were very clean and comfortable . The restaurant provided us with a wide choice of food for our evening meal. Great selection of Ales too. It was good to have a tasty and nutritious breakfast to start us on our walking day. Great stay!

40 years. That's how long we have been enjoying this wonderful historic Inn. As soon as you walk through the door the atmosphere hits you. We have rarely come away dissapointed. The extensive menu, friendly professional service and hands on owners mean this is our favourite place to spend a couple of hours relaxing and enjoying a nice meal with a glass of wine. The trip up there is also a treat. Will be back up there on Saturday with family for another treat.

Lunch for two on Monday 13th November. Very busy with lots of diners but our fish, chips and mushy peas were served without delay. The fish was succulent in a beautifully crisp batter; chips were "proper" twice-fried chips and the mushy peas were lovely. Food was also plentiful. The pub is very atmospheric with wonderful roaring coal fires. Well worth a visit.

Returned from a 24hr break with my husband for his birthday treat...gorgeous setting, lovely old quirky place, all staff friendly and attentive, lovely food..the fillet and t-bone were delicious!! Great wine and beer too! Accommodation clean and comfortable as always!! If you’re looking for posh and precocious then this isn’t the place for you, but if you’re looking for great food and service in idyllic surroundings and a good nights sleep then this is perfect! Booked our next visit on departure! The only down side of our visit is that it was too short!! We love this gem of a place and can’t wait to return!!

Had a meal here on the off chance as we stayed in Hutton le hole, A warm and friendly local pub with exposed beams and a traditional feel. The waiting staff were very friendly and helpful with a great sense of humour. We ordered 2 adults and 2 childrens meals and lets just stay you wont starve! Beautifully cooked and presented food and a very good vegetarian selection. Overall a fantastic meal for 4 and at under £50 for 4 mains and 3 desserts, plus drinks, it was great value. Throughly reccommend and will definitely return during our next trip to Yorkshire.

Decent choice of food available however we ordered pie mash Mushy peas and gravy. Only had 1 pie (so got a pasty as there was 2 of us) Mash was made from a jacket potato it was very lumpy tinned peas over blasted in the microwave served with a smile however forgot the gravy and it arrived half way through us eating the meal. Sadly this place could be a little gold mine if run correctly and proper attention to detail applied with the food. We hafmd our lunch at 12.15 so there was no way they could have ran out of mash? Could do better really

Booked the brewery tour package from Red Letter days. The tour was very informative with Josh being a fountain of knowledge and obviously loving brewing and beer. His witty remarks and low key humour really made the tour enjoyable. The beer tasting in the bar was flexible and offered a pint taken eith as a pint, two halves or a flight of 3, third pints to enable a range to be tried! Although a small brewery they have some quite advanced mechanisation for bottling, canning and casking! Very impressed,
