After somewhere for Sunday lunch with our multigenerational family, The Llewelyn was suggested. We weren’t sure what to expect, especially as we arrived at the very start of service and the restaurant was very quiet. Clearly used by guests of the hotel for breakfast and buffets also - which is fine - it initially felt a little uncomfortable as quite empty but as other guests joined us, the atmosphere lightened. The menu is limited for lunch - we think they may have previously had a carvery buffet? - with just roast main courses and a few pudding choices, plus restricted kids menu, but portions were very generous. As some of our party were vegetarians, we weren’t sure what the ‘vegetable and seed roast’ would be, but it was delicious. Alongside the main roast - which came with roast potatoes, red cabbage, carrots and parsnips plus a huge Yorkshire pudding - was a separate dish of lovely cauliflower cheese plus extra gravy. Another member of the party wasn’t a vegetarian, and we were quite surprised when another dish of cauliflower cheese came along with another jug of extra (vegetarian) gravy! We couldn’t manage all the extra veg between the three of us, even though it was delicious. We were too full for desert, but left happy and full of praise for The Llewelyn, definitely a Criccieth Sunday lunch special!

Not disappointed with this excellent vegan/vegetarian options. Will have to book in here .seems to be the only place with a chef who can cook a well rounded menu. Excellent.

We had a 50th party here and many Sunday lunches with well over a 100 guests on the night many local plus many from away... I must say every single person raved about how delicious the food was on the night and not one person complained about a thing of you haven’t been yet it’s a must if you’re in the area Thank you so much

Friendly staff found us a table quickly And we went to the bar to buy our carvery tokens. Thank goodness I had a small! Generous portions of meat, succulent and tender. A huge array of vegetables and sauces. We were given some silver foil so we could take some of the meat home! Nothing seemed too much trouble we will definitely go there again. The puddings looked wonderful but we had no room for any!

Called in here for a quick lunch while exploring criccieth. 2 meals for £12 was an offer not to be ignored. Restricted choice for this offer but other meals on menu as well. Both our meals arrived quickly and were of a really good quality. Obviously made on the premises and cooked to order. Really good salad accompaniment to my omelette which had plenty of ham in it and cooked beautifully. A no thrills restaurant but serving good food for a good price. There's also a nice garden to eat in if the weathers good. We wouldn't hesitate to use again when we next visit.

We went into the Bar and asked if they served coffee. We ordered an americano and a cappucino. Service was quick and pleasant. After our coffee, we decided to have lunch. You could have a full lunch of starter, main & pudding. We settled for Spinach & Ricotta Cannaloni with Garlic bread. Slimline Tonic. Ordered and delivered very quickly. Nice portion with a larger portion of garlic bread than we expected. Very good. Good relaxing atmosphere in the bar and lounge . Very pleasant.

We visited here as a family outing to Criccieth on bank holiday weekend. As locals to Pwllheli we have been here before last year which was lovely but this time we were all disappointed with the food. The "chicken skewers" were from Iceland and weren't proper pieces of chicken, this was a waste of money for £8+. The pie was awful, very runny flavourless mince and frozen veg, with a weird dry shortbread lid. Wouldn't recommend eating here. Not sure what the hotel is like. The cheesy chips were nice though! And had a nice dog friendly beer garden, so would recommend drinks in the sun and a light snack here.

We are here one evening while staying at the hotel. Excellent service but the food was poor - vegetables over cooked and watery and sticky toffee pudding was sent back as inedible ( very hard). The breakfast was ok though.

We stayed in the hotel over Christmas and ate in this restaurant for 4 of the 5 nights. It was a set menu - 3 or 4 choices each course except soup - that was take it or leave it. No complaints about the food at all - it was lovely. Different choices every night so plenty of variety. Waiting staff were all lovely, friendly and very accommodating towards kids. Highly recommend for the food and service.

Came here for a carvery with my family for my grandmothers 60th birthday weekend, the food was average, nothing better, everyone complained about the meat, mashed potatoes weren't mashed properly and the gravy tasted odd, the two young children had cheesecakes for dessert and enjoyed them very much and for £2 each they were worth it.

We were on holiday in Snowdonia with our son and family, and had a day trip to Criccieth. Unfortunately it rained, so we looked for somewhere to have lunch. We chose to eat at the Lion Hotel, and had the best meal we'd eaten all week. The menu was very good, with a varied selection, and to my delight I had a choice of three vegetarian options. This is rare indeed. The staff were friendly and polite, the food beautifully cooked and I would recommend this hotel unreservedly.

The place itself was clean, with a great bar. The bar staff were warm and welcoming upon arrival. We ordered our food, hoping for much the same..... However, the food was absolutely inedible. I ordered a burger (it can't go wrong, right?), it was so salty, with fluorescent cheese and SO dry, I couldn't eat even half! My girlfriend ordered the steak which was cremated (even though we ordered it rare); it was like rubber and even the steak knives had a struggle! The chips were more grease than potato and the warm, off coleslaw made me heave. We were in quite a large party and everyone had the same complaints about their various dishes (after the event due to us being far to British to each others faces in an attempt to not upset the organiser!). In order to avoid a fuss, I spoke to who I assume was the duty manager about it who said she was going to knock 10% off (just mine and the girlfriends) bill. It seems like a bit of a cheek, given how horrific it was. The food was massively overpriced on the whole. We accepted the discount in order to avoid any further embarrassment (on our part, the manager didn't seem bothered in the slightest!). Thinking about the food actually makes my stomach turn somewhat. DO stop for a drink... DO NOT stop for food!!!!

We ate here twice while staying at the hotel in June. We come to Criccieth once a year at least and had originally booked b&b. We had a three course dinner one evening and ate again for the Sunday carvery. We can't fault the food on both occasions. I can definitely recommend the lamb rump and my husband really enjoyed the ribeye steamers. There was a great choice of wines too. The carvery was really busy but they still managed to fit us in. It was very tasty and really good value. Delicious food, great value and good portion sizes. Staff were consistently polite and helpful.

Stayed in criccieth end of June 2016, was recommended to have Sunday lunch at the castle Inn but unfortunately we were a bit late arriving so was sold out. As weather was wet and cold we decided to dash out to try and find somewhere else. We ended up in the Lion hotel, well it was just awful. The place was empty, very dated and the food awful. It was supposed to b a carvery, but every carvery we have been you serve your own roast potatoes this place didn't. The stuffing was has too much herbs and tasted soapy. The meat was like shoe leather and the gravy was like water. One place will not be wasting our money on again.

My wife ordered salmon goujons. She was served goujons containing white fish! Complained and was told that salmon goujons COULD BE white fish!!!!! After complaining more strongly (!) was told she would get a salmon fillet in replacement which she accepted. BUT the meal was replaced with more goujons. This time, ONE was salmon and the other two were white fish! This second meal was overcooked and basically inedible. Complained again and was told (eventually) that the meal had been replaced and that was IT as she now had what she had ordered. Complained AGAIN, this time to the manager as she was told she could not speak to the chef. The manager was very pleasant and refunded the money for her meal. In the meantime I had long finished my meal. The ribs. They were tasteless. But I was never asked if my meal was OK! To her credit, Grace behind the bar was extremely apologetic and clearly embarrassed. Would not return. I think this is a case for trading standards....

We are a registered charity and have just returned from a residential weekend in Snowdonia with 12 young people. Having stayed in Llanberis, we had left on the Sunday morning, visiting Pwllheli first to take the young people go karting, and then on to Criccieth for some food and a visit to the beach. Having gone on-line prior to the weekend to check out 'good food' in Criccieth, the Lion Hotel came up, with details of their 'Sunday Carvery' which I thought would be ideal. How wrong I was. The staff were friendly and accommodating when we arrived. We were told to wait in the large room while they prepared our table and pre-purchase the carvery vouchers. There were 3 sizes, child 4.50, small 7.50 or large 8.95. When asking about the sizes the barman told us large was a bigger than normal portion. So, we ordered 8 large and 7 small (presuming small was a regular as we had been led to believe). When we went to our table, the lads went up for theirs first, those who had ordered large came back with a smallish dinner plate with meat, a small Yorkshire pudding, whatever veg they could fit on, and 2 roast potatoes and were told they weren't allowed anymore. When we went over and questioned this, we were told we could only have ONE potato for the small size and TWO for the large size. I have never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life. Is there a potato shortage that no-one has told me about? Unfortunately for me and the others who ordered the small, we had a small side plate which I would of classed as a children's portion and were allowed ONE potatoe. God only knows what a children's portion looks like, I can only imagine they are given a saucer, and half a potato? Clearly this is why you are required to pre-pay so they already have your money before you see the size of the plate. Eventually they gave up and allowed us ONE extra potato each. Really disappointed. The food was ok, but there just wasn't enough of it to fill a small child. And really overpriced. Let's face it, potatoes are, and forgive the pun, cheap as chips. It cost us £140 in total, and yet we all left hungry. We won't EVER be going back. Young people had been really looking forward to it and I feel I totally let them down by taking them there.

Decided to go for a meal in Criccieth last night (2/5/16) and went to the Lion which we normally find to be a nice venue. However we were put off by the guy behind the bar, who clearly didn't want to be there and seemed to resent the fact that he had to serve us !! In fact it did us a favour because we changed our plans and went to the Indian next door (Spice Bank) and had a quality evening ! - Thanks grumpy barman !!

It looks lovely. It smells like the food will be brilliant. The food coming G to other tables looks good, but head to the Castle instead. The chips is the castle were great. Arriving at the hotel after a long journey, we looked to eat in the Restaurant. Unfortunately, unannounced on the web site, Friday night is curry night in the restaurant from July 10, so we had to eat bar food in the bar,We started by ordering four main courses, making sure all were entered correctly. on the computer. Three mains arrived, the fourth one was missing and took another ten minutes to serve. The steak pie was ok, The scampi were overdone, and almost blackened. The fish served in the fish and chips was obviously pre formed and tasteless. My 15 chips ranged from raw to barely cooked. The other three portions of chips also varied greatly in "doneness".Thee guests ordered twin scoops of ice cream for desert. Not fancying the a la carte ice cream choices (three flavours) I ordered the Waffle with honeycomb ice cream, confirming the ice cream flavour when ordering at the bar. Two guests got the ice cream they ordered. One guest got 2 scoops of ice cream but not what they ordered and was sent back for correction . My waffle arrived with salted caramel ice cream, not what was promised and as i hate that flavour it was also sent back. The waffle returned five minutes later with Vanilla ice cream as it was the only other flavour they had, they had not found the flavour on the menu. As it was getting dark by this point, i decided to try what i got. The waffle was tough and rubbery, the vanilla ice cream tasteless. I was not happy! There are other eating choices in town, next time we will be trying them

5 of us called in for a bite to eat and decided to try the carvery and was unbelievably bad. Firstly, the mash potato. They have made every effort to take the 'mash' out of mash potato. The lumps were in every mouthful and was literally just potato. No salt, no cream, no butter. just boiled and hit a few times with a spoon. The veg had seen better days but the parsnips were atrocious. I didn't realise you could serve such terrible parsnips. We speculated that they were probably prepared days earlier or even frozen. The Roast Potatoes were roasted for about 3 seconds and tasted exactly the same as the mash. We had a choice of 2 meats from Beef, Turkey and Pork which was fair enough. Pork was OK but the beef was really fatty and was left by most that chose it.I'm all for al dente veg' but please boil it for longer than 5 seconds and the gravy was just brown water... Very tasteless.5 of us including one 21 month old. 1 drink each, £49.85.Like I said, quite simply the worst tasting carvery I have ever had. Sort the chefs out!... Oh, and the lovely lady on reception. When we asked for a high chair, she looked at us over her glasses and said, "Can you give me a minute" whilst she continued to tap away on her computer. A minute later, she fetched us a high chair.

In the winter on a weekday evening it's almost impossible to find somewhere to eat in Criccieth; weekends are a bit better. So on a cold Wednesday we walked the streets to find the Spice Bank is closed till February, the chippy on the high street not open, etc. etc. But the Lion seems to serve food all day/evening so we went in (for the first time). This seems to be a hotel which caters for the coach trade and the dining room looked unavailable. So we went into the Bar. It is a bit basic but the bar staff are friendly and efficient and the menu was quite extensive. The food came quickly and was huge! The quality was perfectly acceptable and if you're hungry this is obviously the place to come. It's pub grub but none the worse for that, provided you don't expect anything else. The beers are interesting and apparently change regularly. The TV in the corner is a distraction but other than that the Lion does the job well. If there's nowhere else open, don't be afraid to try the Lion.

Very enjoyable food - we had steak and ale pie, lots of meat in the pie, we also ordered a side dish of proper made onion rings - all very tasty. Wasn't so keen on the vegetables that came with the pie, they were a bit mushy and an odd selection (cabbage with raisins being one of them!), however, overall the quality of the rest of the meal was very high with polite and prompt service. Would definitely return.

We had travelled from our home just south of Gloucester to Criccieth and needed something to eat. We looked at the menu of a pub in the town and we about to go in and order but they stopped serving food at 2pm and there did not seem to be anywhere serving food until the evening. We asked a local man where we could get a meal and he suggested the Lion Hotel up a side street. Following his instructions we went into the bar. There were four local beers on draft one of which was this Elderflower Beer. I kid you not, it is absolutely true. The taste? Unusual but very pleasant. Definitely tasting of Elderflower. The service provided by the barman impeccable. The food, which was excellent, was brought to us by well trained staff. A delightful experience back up by a gentleman sitting nearby who told us he had been holidaying in the town every year for the last 30 years with his wife and family and they always ate at the Lion Hotel. So don't just take my word for it!If you are ever this way call in, you will not be disappointed.

Food and beer good with plenty of choice. Ate outside in the lovely beer garden with added bonus of being dog friendly and all food served hot and fresh.

Nice warm day and had drinks and food in the beer garden. Really good and highly recommended. Grandson spilled and smashed a glass and staff cleared before we even had to ask them. Great place for a beer on your own and to watch the football!

By chance we ended up at Cricceith after a day out so I didn't check out the restaurant reviews beforehand. We chose to eat at the Lion because it served food all day and we needed an early meal. We ate in the bar which was pleasant enough, the bar person being functional but not welcoming. I had the homemade chicken and leek pie with short crust pastry which was a very poor example; the pastry and the contents were really overlooked. My wife had ham, egg and chips and to be fair this meal was ok.

We were pleasantly surprised that the Lion Hotel could cater for a table for seven as we did not book in advance. Staff were very friendly and the food was cooked to a high standard. A good time was had by all.

There seem to be only 3 pubs in Criccieth. This is one however located centrally. Just a typical local pub with friendly service good food apparently although we didn't eat there. Not much more to say really.

Did not stay but visited the bar from our hotel the George, round the corner on two occasions. The beer not to my taste but areas do have their followers and having been to dozens of beer fests and real ale pubs I appreciate every drinker's tastes are probably DIIFERENT.The staff were first class and allowed a taster for the first drink as I had not tasted the brew before. The bar seemed to be doing well with tourists eating and I hope it keeps on serving the local brews even if not for me for others to try.

Good basic pub grub and carvery. A varied menu reasonably priced. Service was variable: good on the one hand and a little over eager on the other.

We went to the lion because we had dogs and the beer garden was lovely to eat in with dogs. Big mistake. The starters came with the main meal!!! We sent the mains back whilst we ate the starters and 25 mins later they came back fresh from being kept warm in the oven! The spicy chicken goujons were the cheapest chicken dippers you've ever tasted. I doubt even school meals would serve them. When I complained I was told the manager wasn't available and the bar staff were indifferent. Would not go back.

Average pub food. Had to send main meal back as it was cold in the middle. My husbands meal was ok. Bar man not the most welcoming. Food did arrive quickly, not the tastiest cuisine in Criccieth Will not return in a hurry.

Varied menu, tasty, well cooked and reasonably priced. Avoid the duck which was very dry. If weather good, follow the meal with a drink in the garden.

Having a 2 year old girl who will not sit still for a minute we choose to dine in the snug off the bar rather than the restaurant so we could have a bit more privacy and not to bother the other diners. I needn't of bothered because everyone there was lovely. It seemed to be a mixture of locals and guests and they all seemed fine with her running around and genuinely causing havoc. There was four of us and the little one. Food was a little inconsistent (my mums fish was lovely yet my dad's was dry) and overall was just above average but good value.

The four of us were staying at a nearby caravan site and in need of our evening meal, so we wandered into town and into this Hotel. The dining room was beautifully set out for dinner and once it was confirmed that we were NOT guests of the hotel, we were seated away from some of the other diners. We think the other people were on a 'Coach Tour' holiday so on a set menu, whilst we were given a full a la carte menu to choose from. It's not 5star or even Cordon Bleu, but it IS good wholesome home cooked food, with good wholesome service to match and not over priced. We rarely eat twice at the same place when travelling but we would have been quite happy to go back there if we'd been staying longer.

We had a very nice carvery lunch here on the first Sunday of our holiday, nice tasty choice of meats, fresh vegetables, would have liked more roast potatoes, as they gave us those, 2 or 3 with the meat, we helped ourselves to the rest, which is the usual thing with carveries. Would recommend.

Two adults one child ate here for less than £30. Had bbq ribs & wings with chips, plaice and chips and a kids meal of ham, egg, mash and beans plus three drinks. All meals were really nice and the kids meal was a really good size. Ribs and wings were really tasty. We had a dog with us which meant we had to eat in the beer garden. Kids meal had a free ice lolly.

We've been here off and on during a number of holidays to Criccieth over the past seven years or so. We've only ever eaten in the bar (not restaurant) and yes it's 'ok'. It's got wifi and they show the football etc. We visited in May and ate here but this summer stuck to a drink only. The food is what I call pub grub but the prices not much less (if at all) than some of Criccieth's nicer restaurants (and most things I've tasted are deep fried). They also have a weird touch of adding a tomato and cucumber garnish to their roasts! In the bar you're paying hotel prices for drinks. Staff are hit and miss - some friendly and efficient, others have the 'can't be bothered' attitude. To summarise - The Lion offer reasonably decent food which is a little overpriced, drinks are a little expensive in the bar but overall it's handy and has a good beer garden. Ps nice and cosy in Winter too

Went for a meal on the last night of our stay in Criccieth. We've stayed there in the past so knew roughly what to expect.Good service, nice staff and high quality food. There was clearly a coach party staying at the hotel when we went and I though that the kitchen would be overwhelmed, but not at all.The manager was really friendly and personable. A nice time was had.

On a family holiday we were unsure about where to go for our Sunday lunch. I looked for restaurants on Trip Advisor and was impressed with the reviews for the Lion Hotel so we thought we would go and try the Sunday carvery which was very nice indeed. My only criticism is that us Liverpudlians like more than 1 roast potato!!! Apart from this the meat selection was delicious and there was plenty of choice to accompany this. This was followed by a lovely walk along the promenade and turned into a thoroughly enjoyable last day for our holiday.

We came to the Lion for their Sunday lunch carvery as a party of four adults, one of whom is vegetarian and one has very poor vision, a fussy six year old and a baby. So not the easiest customers! The staff were very patient and friendly, even when one of us knocked a pint of lager over. The carvery came in two sizes, which is great for me as I have a small appetite, and had a choice of three meats and a range of vegetables. We added desserts for an extra £2. Our vegetarian had a delicious butternut squash and spinach curry from the main menu and the six year old had a super caramel fudge brownie pudding with ice cream - yum. They happily provided a jug of iced water free of charge. The total bill with drinks was around £50 which was very good value.

The atmosphere in the bar wasn't very good as when I was there they were in the process of barring a local for what seemed no reason at all, all he was doing was chatting to the tourists?? Strange place, food was ok but you can hear the 'ding' of the microwave and the service is agonisingly slow. There are better pubs and hotels in Criccieth

We headed into Criccieth village on a hot Monday night in search of some food after a 5 hour drive. Our port of call was the Lion Hotel, a large building on the village green. We weren't disappointed. I ordered a steak which was cooked to perfection, and my girlfriend ordered a vegetable lasagne. Both were generously portioned, very tasty, and served within 15 minutes of us ordering. It was a quiet evening so the atmosphere was a little subdued but it was well worth the visit. My meal was washed down with a pint of local brew - the bar serves a selection of 3 or 4 real ales on tap which was a bonus. All in all, traditional food but served well and we left satisfied.

Awful experience. We arrived around 2 pm, and we asked what the soup was. We were told it was Parsnip and immediately ordered. The member of staff went to the kitchen to ask something and then came out to say they are no longer serving food. We found this odd given that she had just confirmed the soup with the kitchen, and the cafe is open until 4 pm. Fair enough if we were trying to order at 3.45pm, but this was at 2pm. We ordered coffees and welsh cakes, which took 20 minutes to come (cafe was empty, save for ourselves). The rude member of staff then slammed them on the table, didn't even take the items off the tray, and walked off. Never have I had such an awful customer service experience. Complete letdown to what is a lovely area.

An out-of-town farm/campsite/farmshop. Reasons for 5* = service (friendly), quality (.take a look round the shop), price (very good value) . I thought this was a lovely place. As a family we’d all happily revisit. Good value for the quality of produce. In Leeds (where we come from) could charge a lot more. We’d happily happily revisit

A most welcoming local pub with an excellent chef who happily adapted starters into a main for me - veggie! Although menu catered for everyone. Mine hosts were so cheerful & hardworking - many could take a leaf out of their books! The place was absolutely buzzing with people of all ages - locals & holidaymakers having the time of their lives singing along to the live musician of the evening who sang everything from Beatles/John Denver to modern day...talented chap! We will definitely be back - next time we may stay if not during the summer months, perhaps for an Autumn/Spring walking holiday!
