Great views of the Sound and adjacent Hoe. Fox was ok, but a little bland. Cheese on burger should be melted and potato rosti a bit bland. The host was very friendly and overall ambience good.

By chance we stumbled into this superbly located little gem. Dave, the owner and restorer provided us with tea. When we expressed an interest in the origins of the lookout, Dave showed his beautifully produced photographic album and spent time detailing the history. Thank you to Dave and his wife, Ann for such an unexpected highlight of our visit to Plymouth Hoe.

We stopped only for Tea and Ice Cream but will go back as the proprietors are so hospitable and dedicated to their community that it’s a joy to sit there and watch them interact with everyone. They rescued this granite watch house from being a boarded up ruin. It is a tiny kitchen with no shelter which has been brought back to life sitting next to Smeatons Tower (Ex Eddystone Lighthouse) The lookout would advise the Port of incoming ships and Liners prior to ship to shore radio. I believe it was built about 1834? I may have got that wrong.

The Liner Lookout was built just for that very purpose - to watch the huge shipping liners sailing into Plymouth, After being derelict for a number of years it was brought back to life only recently by a passionate Plymouth couple Ann and Dave Morrish, who turned it into a small cafe with area outside with free games and activity area for all the family. Very reasonable prices, a top location and friendly welcoming management and staff. It's a great start out point for my history tours and always good to see it being visited by locals and tourists alike, it's independant traders like this who are the real cream of Plymouth's tourism industry. Very proud of their city and rightly so, it's one of the greatest cities in the world!

This watch tower was built in the 1870s and served as a lookout for the large ships entering Plymouth. It was later used as a police post by Plymouth City Police and although boarded up for twenty or more years the proprietor Ann now runs it as a small café with beautiful views over Plymouth Sound and Drakes Island. The cream teas are delicious and on a fine day sitting out on the deckchairs is indeed a treat away from the City Centre. Well worth a visit

The owners have taken a once derelict look out building, renovated it and now offer up a much welcome change for teas and coffess on The Hoe with an exceptionally stunning views. Forget the more expensive places down on the front like The Terrace, this place is family friendly with toys laid out on the grass where children can play and surrounding the 'look out; are deckchairs and benches to sit on plus of course a whole area of grass. Not suitable in the rain as there is no inside seating but in a very short space of time I've made quite a few new pals here with other dog owners (they LOVE dogs!!), terrific location, very friendly couple running it and a huge asset to Plymouth Hoe.

We've been enjoying the mellow coffee, Plymouth tea and delicious snacks at the historic Liner Lookout for around a year now. It is a family and dog-friendly outdoor cafe near Smeaton's Tower, with deckchairs and benches from which to watch the non-stop activity on the water. Easy access across grass or gently sloping path from the disabled parking spaces on the Hoe or nearby on-street parking. There are toys to keep children happy and Ann and Dave are the most welcoming hosts, often holding charity events at the Lookout. It is great place to visit even when the weather isn't at its best, because a coffee, bacon roll or jacket just doesn't taste as good anywhere else.

Trying to get a decent mug of tea and hot or cold snack at a reasonable price and somewhere to sit to soak up the spectacular views has not been easy for decades. The places down by the road or on the terrace are pricey. The old park keepers lodge back by the citadel is reviewed elsewhere but doesn't seem to gel because it lacks hospitality. The Lookout is quite the reverse. Set in the shadow of Smeaton Tower and looking over the roof of the Dome, it is cheap, cheerful, welcoming, and has some some trad deckchairs and basic wooden tables. It feels like a cross between a polite, clean, greasy spoon and a simple outdoor teashop but above all it is laid back and welcomes everyone. A refreshing addition to catering choices on the Hoe.

Interesting that there’s been a lot of interest since The Vault closed and the lease was up for grabs. A lively CBD cafe business called ‘Buddha Hut’, which started a year or so ago in Union Street then moved to lower Cornwall Street has now announced they are expanding again and have acquired the Mutley lease and will open at the beginning of November with a cafe selling lots of CBD coffee and food etc on the ground floor with the large basement given over to other CBD products.

Three of us came in for informal supper. Booked but not necessary, maybe half full. Deal of £25 for two portions of fish and ships, geared towards couples but we have to pay about £17 for a third. The girls serving seemed to be getting edgy towards the end maybe because there seemed to be a group of their friends towards end of evening.

Have purchased from here several times - both the cake slices and celebration cakes. Most of the time the cakes are great - light and fluffy, but have been two occasions where the cake was too sweet and did not taste very fresh (seems more of an exception), but will still be purchasing nonetheless.

The Chancel has been one of our favourite places to eat in Plymouth for many years. During Covid and a bit longer they’ve been delivering or preparing for collection. Without much thought or any foreknowledge we walked down this evening hoping it might up and running for their traditional bistro food and good wines. Very disappointed therefore to find it dark, empty and will a To Let sign. No hint that there might still be an online service. Pity and we’re sad. Many dozens of happy memories.
