Superlative food. Eclectic and interesting decor in lounge/ bar areas. Restaurant itself over modern and over lit. Some staff didn’t seem very happy, but overall we enjoyed our evening.

The food provided was overpriced and simply not good enough for the standard expected. We had occasion to complain about the meal quality and received the response "The chef apologises" No offer to replace with another option or a drink or bill adjustment by way of an apology. Not good enough for a four star establishment.

We didn’t stay at Lindeth Howe but we booked dinner at the hotel for my birthday. If I’m honest we did try to book 3 other restaurants but due to COVID everywhere was fully booked. Even though we tried to book a month in advance. The internal decor as you lead into the restaurant is stunning and reflects some of the history/story of the building and the grounds are lovely too! I took lots of pictures. And I liked that we were seated at the bar before being led to the dining room. We are a couple in our late twenty’s and the first thing we noticed in the dining room is that we were the youngest people in there and the average age maybe 55-70. Now, that’s not a problem whatsoever but it was a strange detail to notice. For us this really reflected the “vibe” in the restaurant. In addition, we noticed that the restaurant was silent so we were actually whispering at each other in order to have a conversation. As you can imagine this was uncomfortable. Now, we aren’t people in our twenties who expect loud over head music. We respect a fine dining restaurant. But perhaps some audible piano / jazz music would’ve meant that we couldn’t all hear each other’s conversations and therefore have to whisper. And then the food... the parfait was presented very delicately and pretty (I was impressed) but actually it was so fiddly and messy to even eat from a bowl that it just didn’t make sense. And then my partner ordered lamb rump and they didn’t serve it rare as he asked and not really cooked correctly considering it’s the fatty cut. Very soon after consuming our food we asked to move to the garden so we could “talk to one another” and finish our drinks. Oh yeah - wasn’t impressed by the chunky bulky wine glass either .... So in general we felt like it was over priced in comparison to meals we’ve eaten at a better standard in different cities in the UK. And that perhaps the vibe / ambience isn’t suited for a young couple.

We have visited Lindeth Howe before (see my previous review) for afternoon tea. We were so impressed that we decided to book a nights stay on their dinner, bed and breakfast deal to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. So, so glad we did. It exceeded all our expectations and considering the current COVID restrictions it was an amazing experience. We do a lot of overnight and city break stays and have stopped in some amazing places. Lindeth Howe is now in our top 5. A true 5 star experience for us. The hotel location, setting, gardens are fantastic but the hotel decor inside is something else. It’s stunning and a credit to the owners and who ever did the interior design. We stopped in room 3 which is an easy access room, one of 3, rooms 1,2 and 3. These rooms have access to the outside straight from your room. I would highly recommend room 3. It’s huge with a massive walk in wet room. Immaculately presented and a real treat. The food is amazing wether a quick bar snack, cream or afternoon tea or a slap up meal in the restaurant. Top quality, freshly prepared and good size portions at what I think are reasonable prices for the high quality. Best of all the staff. What a great team and a credit to the owners. Friendly, welcoming and can’t do enough for you. We will return and on a regular basis. Lindeth Howe is a real, real treat and a great base for exploring the Lake District. I would highly recommend a stay here. Trust me you will not be disappointed. Thanks to the whole team at Lindeth, fantastic 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We have stayed here 3 times before but not for a couple of years. There had been some decorating & the chairs in the lounge were new, it was classy. Our room had lovely views over the lake & everything you needed was supplied. The staff are very attentive & polite, happy to help, we felt like we were waited on hand & foot. The Chef deserves a mention, loved the menu, all the food was served very hot & beautifully presented. On our first night we had Fillet Steak, it was cooked to perfection, so tasty-congratulations. We will certainly be coming again & I can highly recommend a visit.

We booked some weeks ago for the Panto Crime evening on 5 December. We told them at the time we were vegetarian and I am type 2 diabetic. The receptionist said it would be fine. There was no menu available at the time but she assured us it would be fine - plenty of choice and the chef was used to vegetarians. When we arrived, they had our name spelled very wrongly on the table plan and that worried us ...not a good omen ... but we took a table. The menu said only vegetarians who had pre-booked could have the vegetarian option. We explained that we had told them when we booked. We got blank looks. The starter was a button mushroom and a sprig of raw broccoli in thin batter with a tiny bit of aioli. It was served cold. The main course was cheese and cabbage risotto. That's right - cabbage. You couldn't taste the cheese. IT WAS UTTERLY BLAND, except for cabbage. OMG. I had had nothing since a small sandwich at lunch. I knew my sugar was very low. I had a roll, the chocolate pudding and a gin and tonic - that's all. My sugar shot up suddenly and I felt very ill. We diabetics are taught that you can have a drink if you eat carbohydrates and protein in a meal with it - not alone. I'd already had the drink when I discovered my meal was inedible. Throughout this, I HAD TO TRY AND CONCENTRATE TO SOLVE THE MURDER MYSTERY. Any diabetic knows that low sugar impairs your speech and thinking. It was an ordeal. The actors were fine but they'll soon lose their reputation as a troupe if they associate with this place. We paid forty quid each for this evening. We won't be returning. Last time we visited, we got coleslaw sandwiches as a vegetarian afternoon tea. We shoudl have known it would turn out like this. I told the receptionist of my concerns before I left. All she did was offer to get me something else to eat. No thanks. You gotta be kidding. No offer of compensation of course. I emailed them immediately we got home. So far, no reply. I cooked myself some eggs on toast on returning home and managed not to collapse. Thank heavens my husband was driving. It was awful. This place was recommended to us by friends. Actually, they do not deserve to succeed.

We walked up from the Marina which was great to do. The restaurant is attached to an attractive lounge and bar, which is all very welcoming. The adjoining dining area is spacious and pleasant, busy on a Tuesday but not crowded. A gin menu is very hip and the moment, and the gins were good. For starters we had the wood pigeon and the beetroot, both were very good indeed. The lamb chops for main was just what i love to order ( but my wife beat me to it this time ). I had the salmon. The salmon itself was sublime, the mashed sweet potato was a bit of a distraction, and I think any other type of potato would have worked better. My cheese board on a small picnic bench was different and didn't quite work ( for me ), and the pistachio desert my wife chose could have much better with some small tweaks. Overall we had a very nice meal, the service was attentive. At first a little over attentive but it settled down through the evening. I got the impression that some of the staff were very new, hence their enthusiasm. The wine list suited us, and not silly prices. The final bill didn't hold any surprises, although I'm still not a fan of service charges. Since travelling to Canada and USA I usually tip far more that the standard 10%, so if establishments throws in a 5% service charge, who loses out ? In summary, we had a lovely evening out.

This was our first visit to Lindeth Howe, the former home of Beatrix Potter. Set in beautiful secluded grounds, the hotel and restaurant are delightful, full of old world charm. The roaring log fire was extremely pleasant on a cold day. Our afternoon tea was served in one of the lounges seated in one of the bay windows overlooking the gardens bathed in afternoon sunshine. It was not hard to imagine Beatrix Potter sitting there herself. The array of cakes and sandwiches were first class and freshly made along with endless supplies of tea and coffee. Well worth a treat and exceptional value for money. Once bitten by this experience, it will be hard not to repeat.

We were asked to wait in the pleasant lounge area before being invited to dinner. We had a drink with nice nibbles, while we selected from the menu. We were seated and served tap water and a pleasant amuse. So far, so good. The atmosphere can be characterised as a bit stiff and very English, to which the Polish staff was a welcome distraction. Our experiences with the dishes was very ambiguous. We had made a lucky and a less successful choice from the menu. The risotto, confit de canard (duck) and delice de chocolat were quite good, whereas the salmon starter (too salt), the seabass (foam was supposed to contain oyster, but tasted like water) were less appreciated. Also, the glass ofwhite wine was rather mediocre. Moreover, the selection of 3 dishes could easily turn out to form a rather unhealthy mixture, with hardly any vegetables in it. On the whole, the quantity of calories served was quite sufficient (notwithstanding some previous reviews), but the serving of vegetable ingredients should be better. Regarding the prices, better value can easily be obtained in Bowness, but the experience to dine in the place of one's stay overnight has its benefits too.

The rooms need some spiffing up (e.g., peeling paint in bathroom). But overall it is clean, safe, and does have truly lovely grounds. The food service staff was probably the weakest point. The restaurant's food was good but not great. The hotel has good bones - lovely character and style, feels clean and well aired out. But the beds and pillows were a bit hard, and dresser drawers scraped and caught when closing (not the best quality construction and it shows). Similar problems with the windows.Still, not a bad place to stay. Just needs a bit more care to move up to a higher level.

I really don't know where to start this review. There is so much to praise this hotel for.The staff are excellent from the minute you arrive to the minute you leave. The hotel is clean and fresh, and the family room, really was a family room. In fact we stayed in the superior family room that is on the hotels website and it was just as the picture showed. The food was excellent, lovely fine dining but plenty to eat. As the previous reviewer has said, it didn't look a lot, but having 3 courses of a rich content left me stuffed and my family and we are definitely "foodie's". Breakfast was ample with lots of choice to suit any taste, they even offered a separate vegetarian cooked breakfast. The room was very comfortable, of a good size and the bathroom was clean with enough towels and toiletries for the four of us. The pool was a little small and not very deep but on each occasion when we used it we were the only ones there. Whilst the quality of the meals was first class, the portions were so small as to be ridiculous. One of us always prefers small portions but these were just plain mean. Paying circa £25 for a main course should not mean that one sees more of the plate than the food! It is time such places learned that fining dining should not equate to dieting dining.

One night in the Westmoreland Suite in September 2015. Thoroughly enjoyed a short break in Windermere and recommend the lake cruise. The hotel was chosen for its suite and also its vegetarian menu and both looked great on the website. The hotel delivered on the suite but not the food. Despite giving the hotel a heads up that we were coming to sample the vegetarian menu they were totally un-prepared the evening of the meal and at first were unable to offer the tasting menu. After a bit of toing and froing with the kitchen the waiter was able to offer us a free drink and the pledge of a newly put together vegetarian tasting menu. They knocked something together and it was okay but it was a disappointment overall. The next day the manager did reduce the cost and we weren't charged for one of the tasting menus which went some way to alleviate our disappointment. On a good note the suite was absolutely fab and one of the best rooms I've stayed in. Another good note was the breakfast which was excellent. However I don't think I would return to this hotel after the service experience we had and my vegetarian partner was quite disappointed. I would imagine most guests will love this hotel and the food but it didn't cater for vegetarians very well on this occasion.

I've never posted anything on trip advisor but I felt like this actually needed to be shared as it was awful. worst afternoon tea I've had.. But most of all the service. We arrived here for afternoon tea, there was 8 of us and it was a special occasion. First of all, we hadn't even got out of the car yet and one of the staff came out to say just checking that you hadn't parked in the way! What? nope we're not silly and we've parked weirdly in the car parking space you've provided. Then we go in, booking for 8.. they set up on 3 tiny tables, with 6 arm chairs, so that 2 of the group had the sit behind the us all. Clearly this is not going to work.. so one of us said stating the obvious, I don't think there is enough room, the guys response was "well I'll have to set a table in the restaurant area, will be about 20 minuets".. 20 minuets, to lay down, a plate with a knife, and cups and saucers? Oo and a napkin.. Really? For 8 people. Well it didn't take him 20 minuets like he said it would have.. he clearly didn't want us to move, even though we had booked about 2 weeks before hand. You knew we were coming!! He did not seem happy at all. It was constant sort answers all the way through, which we all found very rude and uncomfortable to be around. Nobody asked if anything was okay or if we needed anything else.. nothing and when we asked for something, well I didn't even dare. Felt so unwanted, no wonder it was dead. The food, well the cheese and pickle sandwich was good.. could of made it at home though.

Like swimming in a warm bath surrounded by lovely murals..We decided to upgrade our dinner to the tasting menu. Wonderful choice! Lots of small delicious courses but at the end of the meal could not have eaten another mouthful. It was so nice to be able to relax in the lounge with our coffee and chocs in front of a real fire.Breakfast is a delight. Lovely fresh fruit and yoghurt, cereals, juices and pâtéseries followed by cooked choices - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is so good I have never tried the other options. The combination of quality rooms, excellent food and brilliant staff make this a gem in the lakes that We will return to again and again.

Our return to Lindeth Howe was certainly no disappointment. Lovely quiet setting made more magical by the frosting of snow that fell on Saturday. Our room was quite small but still offering views, although the lighting was inadequate- quite difficult to read!. Restaurant is superb. It would have been nice to have bottled water in the room, as well as glasses, and I find fixed shower heads a bit of a pain, but that's a personal preference. Hard to beat if you are looking for a quiet, luxurious stay in a marvellous setting.

Used a Travelzoo voucher for our one night stay. It was our third visit and was as good as ever. It is a very comfortable and homely hotel and the staff are friendly and attentive. The room we had looked over the lake and although on the small side was really nice and would book again. The 'small afternoon tea' was perfect - a great selection of finger sandwiches, cakes and delicious scones. We had canapes in the lounge before dinner and then a very interesting and beautifully presented dinner. Lovely mix of flavours and an excellent range of options on the menu. Breakfast was also very good although we did not have much appetite after our dinner of the evening before. Thanks to all the staff at Lindeth Howe and I am sure we will be back for our fourth visit.

We've just returned from a couple of night's stay at Lindeth Howe. The food in both restaurant and bar was beautifully presented and tasted fabulous too. All members of staff were polite and helpful and I couldn't possibly pick out one for the staff award scheme. Our room was fantastic; comfortable, spotlessly clean and with a fantastic view over the gardens to the lake in the distance. We would love to return one day.

We stayed 2 night DBB. The grounds were lovely and so was the position as you could walk into Windermere from there. The hotel was a little dated and felt the furniture needed a revamp. The food was lovely and so were the waiting staff. What let it down was the bed. The mattress was so uncomfortable and not only that they had put two singles together which had a zip down the middle. We had two bad nights sleep went home tired! They had no wifi for the two days we stayed which was frustrating as I needed to reply to emails.

Just arrived back from a two night stay at this fabulous hotel. Where do I start?!The welcome was friendly, the public rooms and spaces very well appointed and comfortable. Outside terrace, lawns and gardens are all imaculately kept and we found the terrace a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of a day spent walking on the fells. The receptionist pointed out the shortcut through the grounds to Bowness. We even saw a deer on our way!We booked a superior double room and it was really good. Very large, comfortable bed, exeptionally clean room and top quality bedding. Large window with nice views of the garden. Bathroom well appointed and clean. Large bath with very good shower over. Plenty of hot water for a deep soak to ease aching muscles from that walk!Food was excellent. Everything cooked to perfection. Top marks to the chef and his staff. The desert was to die for!All the staff are very attentive, friendly and efficient. We didn't get to use the swimming pool, so we'll save that treat for next time. We'll most certainly be booking again and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, comfortable break with a touch of class.

Both my partner and myself had a wonderful time here. The service was impeccable and we couldn't fault in anyway. We stayed two nights b&b and ate in the restaurant on the first evening. I have years of working in restaurants and hand on heart the food was some of the best I have ever eaten. One negative is our bathroom could do with revamping for a 4 star hotel it was tired, but even so this did not spoil our stay and we would definitely stay again.

A lovely, friendly place to eat. The restaurant is spacious and the standard of food very good. The service is excellent, with attention to detail. There is an atmosphere of genteel charm throughout. It is a good place to stay, too, especially in winter, when the roaring fires complement the sense that this was a [more than comfortable!] home.

My partner and I booked a room and table at the hotel and he quality of he food was superb. From the pre-starter soup, through to the desert, every course was dished up with style and grace, all the food had good texture and flavour. The only negative comment was about the service. Everytime someone came to the table it was a different member of staff. Drinking water glasses not refilled until requested (repeatedly), food and drink delivered to our table not for us, and extremely long period of time between the main course being cleared from the table and the desert menu being offered (after we flagged someone Down to ask!).Alas, this did somewhat put our opinion of the establishment down, which was disappointing when compared to the food which deserved 5 stars alone. In summary, exquisite food, service alas, not up to the standard of the food.

We had dinner here as non-residents, and enjoyed it very much. By comparison with the usual eye-watering prices of Lake District hotels it seemed good value (three courses, aperitifs, and middle range wine came out, with tip, to about £50 a dead). The food was good - lovely beetroot mousse for a starter (and I say this as a person not well known for a love of beetroot), well cooked hake with confit duck for one of us and lamb two ways for the other, and delicious (and imaginative) desserts. Staff were friendly and service efficient. I didn't see much evidence of any dress code in the dining room, and some diners there were on the noisy side; but it wasn't stuffy as in some places in that area, and I liked the lack of pretension.

We went to the Lindeth Howe for afternoon tea (our new obsession!). The conservatory where they have the afternoon tea was a really lovely place, even on a cold & rainy October afternoon. The old, quirky furniture fits well with the deep comfy sofas. The afternoon tea itself was reasonably priced and you got enough for your money. The cakes were delicious and the sandwiches were the best I've tasted within an afternoon tea, sometimes people forget about the sandwiches and care only about the cakes so it was good to see some attention paid to the butties and their flavour! All in all a lovely afternoon, would go again.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon for tea. Decor and furnishings were a little dated and not really to our taste but the lounge was comfortable, clean and the service was excellent. The afternoon tea was really very good. Just the right quantity. The sandwiches were nice even though the fillings were quite simple and not all of the crusts had been removed. The scones were excellent and all of the cakes were very good - especially the banana muffins. Definitely recommend for a good value afternoon tea.

My sister and I spent two days last week at Lindeth Howe and so often when you're really looking forward to something, it doesn't live up to expectations. Well not in the case of Lindeth Howe! If it's good old fashioned comfort you're after, you'll find it here. Very comfy beds, lots of space ( superior room), lovely view of grounds, spotlessly clean. Pool & gym area also very clean. The staff could not be faulted! Friendly and courteous, it seemed that all they wanted to do was make us happy. And the food!! Tremendous doesn't start to cover it...different, tasty, great choices, very well cooked exactly to our ( exacting!) requirements without a hint of a grumble. Location was perfect too, a stroll across the path in the grounds then ten minutes or so into Bowness, thus avoiding the crowds, cars and lack of parking space. Highly recommendedand we'll definitely be back!

The code says no denim or trainers - clearly the American party who were there did not read that bit. This hotel looks a little tired but it was once Beatrix Potter's house so I guess it's been around! The food was excellent and that was what we went for so no complaints. A nice area to sit out afterwards including a lovely two seater garden swing.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
