Lil's Chippy in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Notice in the window listed opening times for sandwiches and snacks as 8.30 a.m. onwards, Monday til Saturday. There was a list of fare including bacon and egg sandwiches, just what we wanted for breakfast. We got there at 9.30 and the place was closed with ko signs of life. Very disappointing.

Whilst staying just outside Pendeen, we happened upon the takeaway as the pub we were hoping to eat at wasn’t serving food. No loss as the battered cod and chips was lush and very generous portions.

Lovely flaky fresh cod in light batter, chips great too. Thoroughly recommend any time of the week, friendly staff.

Lovely fresh cut and cooked fish and chips. Made even better by going to Pendeen lighthouse on the the coast to eat them

Just to say Lil’s reopened 3/5/21. Open in the evenings from 5 to 7pm. Was very pleased indeed to be back in Pendeen and eating Lil’s delicious cod and chips!

Greasy batter. Very small portion of chips. Gave me the battered sausage the lady in front of me didn’t want even tho she knew I didn’t want battered either. Been here a few times now but disappointed almost every time.

Fish and chips as they should be, absolutely perfect. We were staying in a holiday cottage nearby and they were so good we went twice. Highly recommend.

Best fish and chips we've ever had. Absolutely 'Ansom as the locals would say. Had a great chat with Lil while our fish was cooking. Cooked to perfection we had large cod and chips with mushy peas.

Ordered cod and chips for four. The cod was succulent and the batter thin and crispy. Chips weren’t bad either

Nice fish , but fat needs sieving or throwing little boys chicken nuggets and chips full of batter bits not experienced this for years , or fish needs cooking separately

This used to be good, but sadly no longer. Possibly the smallest and most bitty portion of chips I've had from a chippy. It was like the leftovers. The fish portion was very small too, however the batter was good.

Seriously shatteringbatter, fresh fried real chips. Fish really fresh. Meat pie from Lil’s also very good. Only downside was the mushy peas. They needed seasoning. But a brilliant old fashioned chippy. Everything cooked fresh to order.

Six of us arrived and placed our orders and the couple cooked everything fresh for us. The fish and chips were totally delicious, fresh with generous portion sizes. To top it all off- the prices are very reasonable.

Freshly cooked chips, fresh chunky well cooked haddock with good batter, pleasant service,what more could you want?

Ordered haddock and chips and sausage and chips, all cooked freshly. Very friendly owner to chat to whilst waiting. Good portion size. Check the hours first as the shop closes early.

Well - they don’t seem to have retired yet! Had cod and chips, and then chips on their own for the vegetarian husband. The Northern owners were nice and friendly. My fish was lovely with great batter, chips were okay - I nearly always say that.

Read the reviews here & elsewhere and although not duly concerned by them I didn't have overly high expectations.

Fabulous fish and chips, well cooked nice and fresh by a skilful couple, you need to get there quick as they are taking a well earned retirement from Christmas, they will be missed and a vary hard act to follow in 2019, happy retirement you’ll be missed!

Getting off the early morning bus I headed across the road for coffee and a bacon bap. Very generous portions and good quality at a good price. Nice chatty lady serving. What more could you want.

Best breakfast sandwich ever! Bacon, sausage, egg, and generous portions too. Delicious. Tea at 1980s prices. Very sensible. Customers can have tea in a real mugs. (avoid environment-damaging-polystyrene...) Having already enjoyed fish and chips the night before, I knew Lil's would be perfect for breakfast after a night's camping. Home made flap jacks to eat later while walking the coast path... fabulous. I wish this chip shop was in every village!

Had to wait while they got everything ready to cook but it was so worth it . Proper chips and a lovely batter on the cod . Well worth the visit

Had the fish and chips, as well as the breakfast bap here. Can highly recommend the breakfast bap here, they are very filling and taste great!

We stayed in a cottage close by and were recommended Lil's breakfast baps which are really delicious and very filling. We then came back to get some fish and chips some other day which were also real nice. Service is swift and very lovely.

Bad weather had cancelled the party's planned hog roast, so when needs must!

After a phone call the previous day I rocked up with 30 people on a residential youth camp. Fish & chips & drinks all round served promptly with a smile & no fuss. Amazing price too. We were very happy.

We were holidaying in the village, local chippy is always a treat, sadly this was far from true of Lil’s. Leaky roof and getting dripped on whilst waiting for my food didn’t help but the fish was awful. Over cooked in beef fat it was greasy thin and unpleasant. Lovely people but a poor fryer... avoid!

not bad just passing gave them a try what I was amazed with was the prices only £1.30 for portion of chips o.k. not a massive size how ever just order 2 if you want more and the fish cake only 75p crazy as most chips shops cost about £1.50 very good value not my personal favourite but would 100% come back well lils chippy see you next time went coming throw pendeen p.s not sure if fish cake was 65p or 75p however still the cheep as chips

We wanted something quick after our long journey, so we thought we'd try Lil's. The Cod and chips were very nice, very good portion size and all cooked fresh.

We went to Lill's Chippy because of the good reviews, however, we were very disappointed! My scampi and my husbands fish cakes were burnt on the outside and the chips were either soggy or under cooked! The food tasted as if the oil that it was cooked needed to be changed. It was a real shame and not very appetising...

Came for food last week as we really fancied fish and chips.

We always have Lily's breakfast baps when we are in Pendeen, they are scrummy yummy. We have tried doing it our selves but not the same, would recommend.

No, me dieron este precioso enorme follón con varias piezas de corte grueso tocino preciosa. No hay normalmente salía sobre bacon panecillos pero esta era el cielo. Bien hecho lil, no escatiman.

Grande cod muy sabroso y fresco a petición del orden. Tamaño cod y patatas fritas, no demasiado grande, pero con un gusto exquisito y terminar. Tuvimos suerte de tener en la puerta de nuestras vacaciones. Mantenga un ojo para las horas, ya que no hay una apertura tardía, lo que tiene sentido ya que está en el centro del pueblo. Comimos allí dos noches, formulario dos veces pescado y patatas fritas de calidad superior

Habían pescado y patatas fritas muy mediocre en calle justo, y como estábamos en casa de visita desde Francia realmente quería algunos peces auténticos y patatas fritas para nuestra hija francesa en jurisprudencia.

Mi esposa y yo tuvimos una comida en pescado y chip de hoy lil. Debo decir que la calidad no estaba a la altura de nuestras expectativas. Las patatas fritas eran muy grasienta y la pasta de pescado pasada en la medida en que la mayoría de la izquierda. Espero que simplemente fue un mal día, pero no creo que volver

Amazing fish and chips. Even got scraps like in Yorkshire. Lillian should be running a Michelin starred restaurant. So friendly. Weather was terrible and we ate our feast looking out of the shop window. Save your money by not going to Rick's in Falmouth and get yourself down to Pendeen for a glorious coastal walk and a piece of fried heaven.

Had breakfast baps from Lils every time we come. Decided to try fish and chips, not great, too oily for us.

Just met Lil, she is,lovely as are her fish and chips, delicious, well worth a visit if on holiday in this area of Cornwall

Went once as we were staying down the road in a lovely cottage, fish was fine chips shiny with oil, not the best. Ok if you can't be bothered with anything else but worth trying the other pubs, or pop along to Sennen where there is a lovely cafe.

We had to queue but well worth the wait -for fresh fish and chips (definitely not frozen) and the price was reasonable too. We had line caught jumbo haddock, chips and onion rings and our dog had a small cod, lightly battered. All very tasty. We'll definitely be back before we head home to Northern Ireland.

Not a great experience! Chips were over cooked and kept in a while basket on the floor. Hot plate ran out of gas and my burger was placed in the deep fat fryer

We were going walking on the coast near Pendeen and were concerned we would not find somewhere to buy a sandwich. We noticed Lil's also did sandwiches and were not disappointed with the quality of the rolls she made for us even though she was just closing. Really great value too and also picked up some huge flapjacks for a similarly reasonable price. Didn't try the fish and chips but they looked great and service was great.

to be honest i wasnt expecting much fro a little local shop like this, but the price was more than reasonable, but the quality was brilliant, best fish and chips i've had in years - thank you

We so look forward to our trips to Cornwall ... Not least because we can have fish and chips at Lils. This establishment is second to none ... It's better than you can imagine ... Cooked to order, great quality and just gorgeous. Grab your 'chippy tea' and take a short drive and eat them while you watch the sun setting on the horizon. J & M

Very busy at opening time with locals queueing for their favourite take away! Not the best I've had but good enough for a hungry traveller.

Real chips - no frozen rubbish here - and good quality fish. Get a take out regularly. Jumbo line caught haddock is HUGE!

The fish is so delicious and perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and juice inside. I always have mushy peas or the curry sauce to go with the chips very tasty indeed. It's just mouthwatering. We take our fish and drive down to the Pendeen lighthouse we take a seat on one of the benches overlooking the Atlantic ocean, it's a fantastic view especially at sunset. It's my favourite outing of the week and only a short drive from Penzance. I don't buy fish & chips anywhere else. Well worth a visit.

the chips etc. are great but the spam fritters are my weakness, my misses hates them, but they are fantastic & worth driving the 20 miles for.

Stopped by for supper and was pleasantly surprised by the prices and quality. A non-rip off chip shop that looks after your pocket. Fish and chips for less than £5 and drinks that are also priced where they should be. A locals chippy and not one that relies on fleecing the tourists for the season.. Thanks

Lil's Chippy offers amazing value for money and I can't fault the quality of the food. Line caught Haddock can't be beaten! You need to be very very hungry to eat the monster burger

Whenever we visit Pendeen we always have at least one meal a week at Lil's, my son would probably eat there every day! . The food is lovely and fresh and the service is always friendly.

Have been to Lil's fish & chip shop several times and have never been disappointed. The burgers are delicious and enormous! You get a very generous portion of scampi, which you get more than any other chip shop (& it's cheaper)!! Lillian & Terry are very welcoming to everyone who comes to their little business. Would recommend to everyone & anyone who want to have an amazing Cornish Fish & Chips!

Have had a meal from Lil's just about every week since she and Terry have been open. Tried almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed

Fabulous fish! We had cod, chips and curry twice on visit to Pendeen. Check the opening hours, only open 2 hours in the evening.

When to this chip shop twice whilst on holiday, I'd go every week if I lived closer but 370mile drive is a little to far. The fish was lovely & fresh, the first time we went the chips were to die for but the second time they was a little pale, but still good. Cooked it the old fanshioned way Dipping not rapseed oil which is cheaper. Lovely lady to chat to when she's not busy. Great Value compared to other prices around Cornwall. She also opens in the morning for Breakfast.

The title says it all. The cod was freshly fried, and its batter coating was lovely and crisp. The chips were very disappointing, because they were limp and pale. I ate the fish and threw away most of the chips.

We always eat Lil's fish and chips when we are down in Pendeen. As others have said, amazing quality and value as well as being a lovely lady. Not open very late but late enough to save me cooking an evening meal once a week! Breakfast baps are also huge and you get to meet some of the village characters if you get the timing right. Thanks again for another great meal. 6 of us were very happy and very full! (Scampi was yummy as a change from classic fish)

Lil serves very fresh fish and chips at very reasonable prices. Service with a smile too. Only opens for a short time in the evening but well worth checking out the opening times and treating yourself .

Arrived in Pendeen exhausted after 7 hour coastal walk, knew Lil's wouldn't let us down, always delivers. We had bacon baps cooked by Lil herself, oh so tasty, we went back for seconds.Never go to Cornwall without eating at this first class establishment. True home cooking.

The best fish and chips we've had for a very long time. The cod was especially good,very fresh and tasty, the chips are real chips not frozen rubbish.If ever in Pendeen again we will certainly be using Lil's Chippy again.

Lil's chippy, is always are first meal when we stay in Pendeen. We have never, in the eight years of visiting, had a bad meal. Food completely lovely, fresh , warm and tasty.

Having family in the area and a bit of a fish lover, I've been to Lil's many times. Haddock is a fave of mine and I know from visiting the North on many occasions that they choose haddock over cod, a good choice :-)This week I've had a large haddock from Lil's and it was lovely. Big, juicy, fresh and the batter along with the chips were cooked perfectly. So nice I've had the same again tonight!Diet starts in the new year but for now, if you want really good fish and chips then Lil's should be on your list.

Great food and service from the lady from Leeds ... They certainly know how to cook fish and chips in Yorkshire! The large haddock in batter was fantastic! Two haddock, chips plus pickled onions all for less than £10. We use Lil's whenever we are visiting Pendeen on holiday! Try it.

Unlike many fish & chippies Lil provided very crispy fish, not greasy and good chunky cod. So often the batter may be crisp but then have a soggy greasy bit underneath - not so last night. Excellent. Certainly worth missing the chippie in St Just!

We visited lils chippy when we stayed in the area, we just made it as they were closing but managed to get fish and chips and burger and chips! What a surprise... The food was lovely, the chips had the old skool taste like chips used to be many years ago (believe they cook in lard)! Worth a visit!!!

We went to Lil's Chippy just because we were starving but the cafés were already closed and the pubs weren't open yet. We would have avoided it since it already smelt awful from the outside. We had fish (battered) and chips and both reeked like the oil had been used at least 3 times. I gotta say that Lil is very nice and the portions were kinda huge, but it was really the worst fish&chips I had in Cornwall.

Great fish and chips and super friendly service. Lillian and Terry know what they are doing and do it really well. The haddock is AMAZING although I shouldn't say that as there will be none left when I go again!

You have to try Lils Chippy on the way through Pendeen. Good value, good portion sizes, and tasty, and always a friendly smile, and helpful local advice as necessary!

We are walking the coastal path and stayed in Pendeen for the evening. Next morning, we realised we needed to take with us something for lunch. Saw that the chip shop was open and sold sandwiches. Lil was brilliant and made ours fresh to order which we then carried with us and ate on route! Fully reco!mended.

I was staying in Pendeen over the summer 2013 and this was close by. We came back from a day at the beach and came here for chips, the place was welcoming and quick. The chips were lovely and a good price.

It is a treat we look forward to popping into Lil's for a bacon tiger bap for breakfast. Always a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere, breakfast baps and sandwiches freshly cooked however you like them and extremely reasonably priced. There's nothing quite like it to set you up for the day - thank you Lil!

As I arrived at Pendeen early one morning, I was surprised to find a Chip Shop open but found them busy cooking breakfasts and delicious bacon sandwiches. I was going to be camping close by so found Lil's very handy as did other campers!

We are staying in a cottage nearby and had lils fish and chips on our first night and it was lovely and the best thing after the long drive. Would definitely recommend a trip to Lils.....in fact I might go this eve!

It’s a lazy truism to point out that the best fish and chips are served on the coast. And when you’re in Pendeen – scratch that, when you’re anywhere in Cornwall – the only place to eat fish and chips is Lil’s Chippy.If, like me, you’re from the mainland, it’s easy to forget what proper fish and chips should taste like. The only bad thing about eating at Lil’s Chippy is having to go back to the substandard fare of the city. The cod is sea-fresh, moist and encased in a light, dry and crispy batter. Chips are prepared on site: light, fluffy and with the right crunch in the right places. If you want a recommendation of accompaniments, go for the mushy peas and curry sauce. The menu also includes sausages, sandwiches, fish cakes, scampi and burgers. The shop also serves breakfast in the morning. I couldn’t pass by without grabbing a sausage bap – a perfect start to the day. What completes this place, however, is the service, provided by husband-and-wife team Lil and Terry. Amongst taking the orders and preparing the food, they welcomingly chat to the customers, of whom there were many (always a good sign). Whether or not you’re a lover of fish and chips, they’re hard to resist when visiting the coast. And if you’re going to have them in the south west, make sure it’s at Lil’s Chippy.

Having been using Lil's for many years whilst on holiday in Pendeen. Have always found the food to be be well cooked and good value. Bacon rolls first thing in the morning are a good start to the day!

As owners of a holiday cottage locally, we decided to try Lil's Chippy in order to promote it , if good. Sadly the evening we called, we can only assume from the other reviews, that we had the dregs,as it was awful ! It is fair to say that the fish was good although the batter tasted of old oil. The chips however, were awful, just overcooked bits ,most of which went in the bin!Certainly, from this disappointing experience we would not be wanting to encourage our guests to call there but would prefer them to go further afield to Lewis' in Newlyn if they want to sample good fish and chips.This saddens us greatly as we would far sooner support the local businesses.
