Light of Asia in Ceredigion

First and last order. Went for the meal for 2 deal due to the high prices and requested no coriander garnish. This request was ignored and there was no mango with the popadoms, just dry onion. The onion Bhaji’s were ok but pastry on the veg samosas was pale and soggy. Both main courses swimming in oil (see photo) and did not look appetising at all. Rice and nann bread were ok. So disappointed and glad we didn’t order the dishes separately as it’s not cheap either.

So so so disappointed. Had two previous take aways first was fantastic. 2nd not so good. But tonight's was dreadful £33 the curries were just like a tesco curry or even out of can no genuine spice ie not home made. Will never use it again

Review of a collection / takeaway only:We’ve placed two orders over the phone for collection, but both times orders have been incorrect with items missing. First time, I had to drive back to collect the missing item and wasn’t even given an apology. Second time, it was a number of poppadoms and sauces, which might not seem a lot but add up to a few quid and mess up the meal. Another slightly annoying thing being that if you want to change anything on the meal deal, you seem to get charged arbitrary prices. For example, an extra £1 for pilau rice, but actually the price difference between steamed and pilau rice on the main menu is only 50p. Again, not a major thing but important given that the menu prices have recently gone up.Overall it’s something to stop me coming back as a regular customer. I’ve given 3* the food quality has been consistently good.

After waiting over an hour and a half finally the delivery guy turned up with half my order. First things first obviously ring the store. The man who dealt with my complaint had very poor customer service skills and was extremely rude. Heads up to anyone who reads this. Over priced, cold, poor quality food. It's one for trading standards tbh. Say no more!!!!!

We've eaten here a few times and it's been okay but our latest take away will sadly be our last. We ordered online through Just Eat and were told it would take an hour to arrive. No problem, happy to wait. An hour and 15 minutes later we receive a phone call from the restaurant to say that the delivery driver doesnt have any change so could we pay over the phone. Again, not an issue, these things happen. Another 15 mins later (30 mins late), Food arrives and pupadums are missing, driver says we have to request a refund through the app. Went through the steps on the app to be told I had to call the restaurant. By this time we had unpacked our takeaway to find that we have half a portion of chips and half the order is cold. I called the restaurant and the man on the phone was rather hostile and tried to tell me to go back through the app, tried to explain that I had tried this but didn't seem to make a difference. Spent 45 with customer services on Just Eat to be told they could not help as the order had been paid with cash, despite the fact that I paid by card over the phone! Not sure what happened here maybe just a busy friday night - I understand these things happen but for the sake of a couple of pounds, could have kept a semi-regular customer. Unfortunately this isn't the case. What a shame.

Just had a takeaway from here (literally 39 mins ago) and OMG. Went for a Chicken Dhansak deal for 1.Firstly, staff very attentive and polite (both on entry, service & exit). Secondly the Dhansak, I've tried a fair few across Wales/England & Northern Ireland on business and hands down the most tasteful EVER. Well done, fortunately I am here on business until Xmas so you will see me again (Mark). Great way to run a business.

pretty decent food, but the service is terrible. been there a few times and pretty happy with everything, but recently they just refuse to deliver. Was my birthday today, and they had said they would deliver, so my family and I didn't cook. Then, when we go to order tonight, they refuse to deliver. Probably won't be getting food there again after tonight.

I have visited this place before it was passable last time so I thought give it another go so here is my verdict this time.The menu has had a revamp and of course price increase the food was just about Ok I ordered a duck curry which was a duck breast pan fried with a very sweet curry sauce in a separate bowl pilau rice and a pershwari nan.Not pleasant and way over priced good job I had a King Cobra to wash it down.Last visit for me I think

Had a pre-booked meal for 6 for my birthday, we were seated in the upstairs party room which was nice as it was busy downstairs and we had it to ourselves. Service was very prompt and the waiter was forthcoming with suggestions for sides to accompany our mains. The food was good and there was a wide selection of vegan options.

We had a fab meal at this restaurant in Aberystwyth..... the food was beautiful, freshly prepared! The staff were excellent and did everything they could to make us feel safe and welcome, all COVID regulations were in place.... would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Aberystwyth wanting a nice Indian meal!

Had a fantastic meal here last night. Felt very safe with what they have put in place re Covid. Screens between tables and well spaced out. We had the Chicken Sagwala, mushroom pilau rice and two vegetable side dishes which were huge. All delicious and plenty of food served. Will definitely be back here next time we are in Aberystwyth. Highly recommended.

Our party of three were all underwhelmed. £1 per poppadom (really!?), and £14 for a Chicken Jalfrezi and the same (at least) for an average Chicken Tikka Masala. Fine dining prices for pleasant but average food in a basic cafe/no-frills style venue. Needs to offer more the money.

Very disappointed in the food & service, despite it being top rated on trip adviser. Both waitress & waiter were very inattentive and not friendly upon arrival. We were asked if we booked when we arrived, despite the restaurant being practically empty (& no one else arrived who had booked whilst we were there). We got our curries but they forgot our rice and naan so by the time they arrived the curries had been sat around for 10 minutes. No apology. Then the curry’s we had were extremely salty and if you’re a veggie, the veggies you get in the curry’s are 90% bits of potato. When I complained I was told that the chef doesn’t use any salt in the curry so it’s not salty. I was then told to get up and go to a man by the till at the back of the restaurant to explain why I was unhappy with the food. I felt as though I had to push to get the curries refunded even though we hadn’t eaten them, so we weren’t being unreasonable. The staff were also not very apologetic. Really bad curry, even worse customer service.

Went for dinner last night and had THE best Lamb Rogan and Massamam curries. Service was great and attentive. Well done to the chef; and am pleased to recommend !

Ordered for delivery. No naan breads as ordered and a call to ask where they were just gets you an argument with someone who won’t admit they ballsed it up. Skip this place for delivery (which, btw, you pay £3 for). Rubbish place really.

Two hours after ordering was told 3 of our meals were no longer available and the rest would take another 25 minutes. We bailed. Was charged full price for starters and drinks. Starters were good but very disappointing service and treatment

Very very disappointed. We have Bangladeshie food at home and this is nothing like it .We ordered a family meal feast for 4. The rice colours looked like a child’s ball pit, the sauces were like sweet tomato purée and the lamb Bhuna was swimming in oil- see photo.This has to be the worst takeaway that I’ve ever had and would not recommend ordering from there again. An expensive mistake!

Had a takeaway... my grilled chicken was overcooked, yet the vegetables almost raw... the chikcen on my wife's curry was just about cooked, the sauce a sweet mess. And no cutlery... Expensive to boot, wouldn't bother!

Genuinely one of the best Indian meals I've had, all 4 of us really enjoyed the food and very good service, with a smile!

My friend and I were hankering for Indian food while visiting Aberystwyth and searched out a restaurant not too far from where we were staying. We found the Light of Asia on a dark and rainy night. We came at a bad time as there was a huge party of people in an upstairs room and so our service was a long wait while a steady stream of take away orders came and went. The place was short staffed and the poor waiter was running to a frazzle almost and we did not know at the time that there was a big party going on (they should have TOLD US, we would have understood then) so we were getting a bit annoyed for having to wait such a long time for our meal after ordering . We should have been offered some papadoums to keep us sweet, so to speak, it would have really been a nice gesture from them and at no great expense either. When we finally got our meals, it was like we hadn't waited at all enduring starvation as EVERYTHING was so delicious and our ire was forgotten. We had the dry Tandoori King Prawn and garlic mushrooms...oh my the garlic mushrooms, you've never tasted anything so delicious. we couldn't believe how good they were and the Peshwari nan bread was gorgeous too. We were so impressed, we went back the next night and ordered the same thing!! It was not busy the second night, so it made all the difference in the world, but I would go back there anytime and recommend it highly for quality. Just don't go at holiday time.

Imaginitive menue, sperb flavours, generou portions, efficient service, happy staff, mixed clientelle, nice place to sit, reasonable prices. WHat's not to like?

A party of six of us went to the restaurant and had various dishes which were plentiful and very tasty. Great food with good service. The ambience was relaxing and friendly. If you like Indian food ,spicy food then try this place.

We went there on Friday when we were in Aberystwyth for the weekend the food in this restaurant is delicious for a starter I recommend the chicken chaat which was the best I’ve tasted anywhere both our main meals were were very tasty and I must also mention our waiter who was very friendly and smiling this made our dining experience a very happy one and will definitely return here next time we are in Aberystwyth.

The Light of Asia has become a favourite of ours. We often visit Aber and we generally come here for dinner. It's fun to try different dishes as we feel confident that they will be fairly authentic. The amount of food is usually more than we can manage even though we try not to order too much. They are always happy to pack it for us to take away - then we can enjoy it again at home :D

We wanted to try the Light of Asia based on a recommendation of places to visit during our weekend in Aber. It was a Saturday night so the restaurant was full and clearly very popular. Even though we did not book, the staff were able to offer the two of us a table within 30 minutes. Once seated, despite being very busy, staff were very attentive with drinks being swiftly delivered and food order taken. The food tasted fantastic. We will definitely visit again when we're next in Aberystwyth area. We are both big curry fans, and the Light of Asia gets a thumbs-up from us.

I travel all around the UK and have eaten in many and varied Indian and Nepalese restaurants but none of them have been better than the one that I have just eaten at, The welcome was warm and friendly and the staff were attentive but not annoying! I asked for a recommendation for my main meal and was not disappointed, the korachi methi ghust was excellent! Looking forward to visiting again!

Very bad service and the wrong orders were brought to the table. We had to wait 40 minutes for the food to arrive. When we went to pay, the bill was £20 more than we expected and extra items were added on to the bill which we did not order. Do not recommend and we will not be returning.

Visited on a recent weekend away in Aberystwyth. The Sunday special was excellent value for money. The main curry course was large and very tasty. Can't beat for the money

6 of us had a delicious meal with a friendly service. The atmosphere downstairs was traditional Indian restaurant but unfortunately we were taken upstairs to a small, brightly lit room with no atmosphere at all. (By the way watch the step into the ladies loo, seemed to catch everyone out !) Happy to give 4 stars.

Very disappointed in the take-away we ordered this evening. Excuse me for assuming that lemon chilli rice would contain three simple ingredients. I was wrong. It was riddled with slimy onions (which my partner cannot eat) and beans (which I cannot eat). So that was a fail. The garlic naan was cold and tasteless. My makhani contained overcooked prawns and a silly amount of onions - no recipe that I’ve ever tried has included onions; the nuts appeared to be missing and I had to add salt. Apparently, the vindaloo (no onions, phew!) was ok. Not sure why we got a bag of chips but honestly, a bag of extra onions? At least the popodoms were good.

Great food at reasonable prices. The staff were very courteous and polite. Best Indian in this part of Wales!

Reccomended by some locals we were very glad we went. The waiter was helpful on what to get and how much. The place was clean, the service was quick, generous portions and the prices were moderate.

Very enjoyable food in the Light of Asia. Good happy hour meal offer. Staff were very friendly and efficient, the madras curry I had was very nice and the keema rice was the best I’ve ever had. Well worth a visit if you enjoy Indian cuisine.

Have eaten here on numerous occasions and always been happy with the food and the service! I visited a few months ago and was extremely disappointed with the service and the food! Saying that last night I decided that we would give the benefit of the doubt and try there again! Massive regret!! Absolutely shocking service, phone line is awful! Staff are rude and unhelpful and the food was awful,I decided on a chicken korma last night and it definitley was not chicken! It made me feel physically sick i couldn't eat it! Gone majorly down hill!! Such a shame for what was a decent food establishment in Aberystwyth!!

I’ve eaten here as a sit down before and was very happy .., had take away tonight... NOT good very disappointing . We rang to complain they aren’t bothered .. denture chicken was reheated when it clearly was.. Really really bad

Visited for an evening meal on a Saturday.4 adults 4 children. The staff were very friendly and the meal was the best Indian food I had ever eaten. Lots of vegan options and staff very happy to accommodate our dietary needs.

The food is lovely and fresh. Very tasty.. we visited 2 nights of our 3 night stay. What i was disappointed about was the level of service we experienced. Tuesday night was ok but one man carried it all whilst the girls just seems to float around not knowing what was what. The second night we were there he wasn't there and we noticed immediately the service level had dropped. No welcome to the table and ordering drinks first whilst we looked at the menu. Straight into orders and i like to read a menu before i order!

Food was really yummy! Definitely try the crab to start and I’d highly recommend the King Prawn Makhani. Naan and onion bhajis were lovely and light. The only negative was that the chicken for my partners chicken shashlik was very dry!

Four of us had a great meal last night. Good size portions, lovely naan bread, great onion bhajis, all enjoyed our curries, excellent service. We got a table when we arrived but got busy soon after so a good idea to book, at least on a weekend, I think. Definitely recommend.

After eating here many times I love the lamb madras.on this rainy Friday night in Aberystwyth we decided to order in instead.phone was answered by an hungover man. Food will be half hour he said. 50 mins later we rang up. Another man answered and was surprised to hear we were waiting for a delivery..( alarm bells ringing). Food will be 15mins he said. 20mins later a taxi turns up with food. The lamb madras was not a madras it was more like a Rogan josh. Very disappointing. Nan bread was tasteless. Poppadoms stale.on top of that we were charged £4 delivery it doesn't say that on the website. Not happy at all.

Went for a meal with family. The waitress was lovely although a little overbearing. We felt that we were constantly being watched while we sat there. This was very intimidating. The food was ok, not great just ok. Hidden costs on the bill at the end!!! The table next to us were told that they hadn't ordered enough food to warrant them having the table. There was 4 of them and they were ordering for the sake of ordering, with the waitress pushing them to add to their bill!! I don't think this is a very professional practice. We have eaten here several times in the past but won't be returning after this visit. Very disappointing!

Food is good. Service polite but twice the food has been very slow to arrive. It took an hour the first time when the place was jammed. Another irritation was being told we hadn't spent enough when we ordered and were instructed to order another side dish (we'd already ordered about £30-35 worth for two people)!

Called in on a Monday evening and It was very busy, however the staff were still friendly and attentive. Happy to do me a garlic rice (off the menu) and the portion size was excellent. My husband and i often eat here when we stay in Aberystwyth. Every time we eat here the food just gets better, we have never had a bad experience and hope we never will as this is a MUST to be visited well worth the money, staff wonderful can't wait until next time.

A new find! The food this evening was superb and served accompanied by lots of smiles and gentle banter. The prawn puree is second to none and the tandoori chicken delicious. Good sized portions quickly served (though we were there early - it's open 4.30 -11 and is apparently very busy later, It has a gentle atmosphere with lots of satisfied customers including us. We will be there again very soon

Consistently good food regardless of whether you eat in or take out. A little bit pricey, but there's no where close by that is anywhere close to their quality. Fantastic place for a date or for a treat.

Having looked at some of the terrible reviews I don't recognise their description of this place? It was admittedly very quiet when we went in, but the service was very attentive and prompt and Shubert and the other waiting staff always had a beaming smile on their faces!

Lovely restaurant with great service and food to make your mouth water . We had the regular poppadums and chutneys to start. Then the mains of chicken shaslik and lamb Bhuna really tasty and large portions. Sides of pilau rice Bombay potatoes chips and peshwari nan all cooked to perfection .we will be going back to this restaurant on our next visit .well done everyone concerned

The staff were quite welcoming and the atmosphere in the restaurant on a rainy mid week night was quite buzzy, so I was hoping for something better than the food which arrived.

The food was good, but the service was a complete shambles. The staff just don't listen at all to the customers. My wife and daughter ordered starters as mains. I ordered a main course curry. We explained we wanted all the dishes to come together.

This has to be one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been in and this was the second time we’d been (apologies for not putting on a review the first time round). My daughters at university in Aberystwyth hence the reason for visiting.

Absolutely superb food and service. The portions are big and prices are very reasonable. Pity it is so far away from us as we were just visiting Aberystwyth.

Was in 2 minds when I read the reviews but thankfully the poor ones are either one offs or malicious as I couldn’t fault it. Service was great, a very attentive young man with an oxbridge accent looked after us a treat. Food was tasty and hot, and came in good time. Highly recommend

Moved to Aberystwyth in 2016 and my Wife and I love Indian Food but prefer to eat in at home rather that eat out.

It's been a while since I was in Aberystwyth. This time being with my partner I knew where I would take her for a good meal.

Were talked into having their mixed platter, it was not good. were both extremely ill that evening. We love Indian food and it takes a lot to upset our constitutions but this meal did despite only eating a very small amount, the title says it all.

Sat down for 20 minutes waiting for our drinks, were then told that some items on the menu were extra price and others they did not have, totally poor service so we walked out, total dump avoid.

I visit Light of Asia whenever I am visiting family in Aberystwyth and it is honestly the best indian place in town with fresh and modern deco, friendly and helpful staff and most importantly the food never disappoints! We always have the same tested selection of curries, tandoori king prawns and fresh naans. Highly recommend

I prebooked a table for my mother in laws birthday party. We were sat down ready to order by 6pm and a few people wanted to take advantage of the happy hour between 4:30 and 6:30pm we asked the waiter about this offer who gave us a lot of excuses as to why we couldn’t have this offer one of which that it was half term. which it wasn’t. After questioning this for some time he finally decided to allow the offer which was being displayed. He did not seem interested in what he was doing and after repeating the order a number of times the order was made. Everybody agreed we found him quite rude and not interested in what he was doing. I did not want to cause a scene on my mother in laws dinner so we continued to enjoy each others company. 30 minutes later the food arrived which Was not really a problem what was a problem was the naan breads and rice were cold and some of the food which was ordered did not arrive. At this point I wanted to get up and leave but did not want to ruin the dinner. We called the waiter over again to ask for the food which was missing and to warm up the naan bread and rice. No question about it the food was untouched on the plate merely put in the microwave again! The Lamb was fatty and hard and the chicken most certainly precooked then added to lots of oil and a sauce. I’m not one to write reviews normally but on this occasion I felt it is totally necessary. Will not use again. Very dissapointed.

The starter was nice but the lamb was way over cooked and fatty! The main I had chicken and it was not cooked, the sauce was full of grease and very bland! I am very unhappy with this and for the price I feel this should have been a nice meal! As a new customer I will NOT be returning!

Chicken wasn’t cooked properly and Korma didn’t taste like it should! Do not recommend at all! It was very disappointing and I will not be returning

Me and my partner ordered a take away in store, the guy taking our order was extremely helpful, gave recommendations and knew exactly what he was talking about, took the curry back, started eating it and was enjoying it until I realised my curry was swimming in oil (my partner's was oily too but not as bad) I thought if I ate all of it I'd end up spending the next day in bed, curry tasted so good just couldn't eat it which was such a shame, have attached a photo, can't really see it as much but one half of the plate curry, one half oil, like I said, tasted amazing, but wasted money as couldn't eat it

Been here 2 years ago, loved it then and still love it. Great curry, tailored to you heat. Had the duck special and requested vindaloo hot- amazing! Normally avoid duck curry due to it being fatty- this was the opposite, crispy and exquisitely spiced- beautiful.

We are big fans of Indian and Bangladeshi food and were very pleased to stumble upon this place on a cold Sunday night in January whilst visiting Aberystwth. The quality of the food was exceptional and servings generous. We ate heartily and all washed down with deliciously cold Cobra. The staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the food. Highly recommended.

I have visited Light of Asia semi-regularly for a number of years now and had always been satisfied with the food and the service, until tonight. I was very disappointed with how we were treated by the staff. Firstly, it took an hour for our starters to arrive, during which time our waitress did not update us on what was going on or why there was a delay. She had showed us to our seats as soon as we arrived and then disappeared for the night. By the time we had finished our starters myself and my partner had long finished our drinks and were thirsty again. We asked a passing waiter if we could have two Pepsis, he said yes. The same waiter then continued to walk past and forth past us, serving other people quite regularly, without acknowledging us. We eventually had to ask another member of staff for our drinks, which duly arrived along with our main course, an hour and a half after we had arrived at our pre-booked table. When we finished our food the staff had already started to clear up other tables and clean the restaurant, forty-five minutes before they were due to close. There were three waiters, including our original waitress, who stood and chatted while our empty plates sat in front of us. I eventually had to get up and request the receipt. The staff looked inconvenienced by my request, but acquiesed. When we left the restaurant, two hours after arriving, having eaten two minutes' worth of food, none of the staff made eye contact with us or apologised in any way.

We dropped in on New Years Day evening and had to book a table and come back, which is an observation e.g. book a table and don't assume you will get one! The food was excellent, the staff friendly even though they were very busy that night. I would recommend the place and will happily visit again next time I'm in the area.

Absolutely horrendous service, rude staff. Hair in food which waiter denied after picking it off plate with his fingers. Avoid at all costs

Visited on a cold,wet evening in Aber on a stay over to pick up our daughter. This place was warm and welcoming when lots of other places were closed or looked dismal. Food was absolutely gorgeous and loads of it; by far one of the best Indian restaurants we have been to! Service was quick and waiter was lovely. Sorry we didn't find this place on previous visits, definitely returning.

Nice menu, good selection to cover all tastes, even alter dishes to your taste. Food is top notch, flavours, textures, spices, fantastic. Polite helpful staff. - Kas & Kim. Really made a mid week meal special. This restaurants take always are just as good! Looking forward to next visit.

We ate on a busy Saturday night. The staff were fabulous, very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. I had the scallops starter. They were cooked perfectly and their sweetness was complimented by a lovely, lightly spiced sauce. For main I had the the chicken tikka banana curry. I 'trusted` their recommendation and wasn't sorry. A really nice smooth medium hot sauce packed with flavour that was nicely offset by the chicken tikka and banana. It was accompanied by rice and a light and tasty garlic nan. A really lovely place that never fails to disappoint, this being our 3rd visit.

I've been a few times to this place in the past. I normally have a great meal with funny and attentive staff but this time (a couple of months ago now) it wasn't so brilliant. We were standing waiting to be seated for a while, when our orders were taken we waited an hour for food and no apology was given at all. We had to listen to staff shouting down walkie talkies and hanging around in front of the bar which added to a stressful and crowded atmosphere. I believe the staff change quite regularly, it might not be avoidable but its nice to have staff who are really invested in the business in any sort of themed restaurant, people who really know and care about the food. Not to worry about that though, when asking if the meal deal was for eat-in i was impolitely answered with a 'no mate, that's just take away'. Fair enough but it was blunt and patronizing. The same upon paying the bill, no eye contact from the boss and his disinterested persona kind of put me off. It's the people that make a place (and the food in this case, but that was good). Some tweaks to improve customer service from the boss and staff would be good. It was busy that night, but it would have been nice if that stressed atmosphere didn't carry over to the customers.

Modern decor, comprehensive menu listing several curries available with chicken/fish/veg etc, and a good range of sides. Therefore a good choice for vegetarians. Had never seen lemon chilli rice before, which was delicious, the friendly waiter explained this is popular in the Midland. Got very busy with takeaway orders, but service levels maintained for diners.

Popped in here whilst on overnight stay in Aber. Ratings on Trip Advisor were good and several references to booking being a good idea. We went over half term, mid-week and went early evening. Good job we booked, was very busy. Also busy with take-outs too.

Ordered a meal online, it was delivered with Deliveroo, the meal itself wasnt bad however it was a bit dry and messy boxed (some rice, chicken and sauce). My friends also ordered some drinks and sadly they werent delivered to us, we tried calling the restaurant but it didnt change anything. Maybe eating inside will be a better experience, definitely won't order online again.
