Sorry, but the Shampan, which I have enjoyed many times in the past now (June 2018) has a ZERO food hygiene rating having been acquired by the former owner of the Gulshan in Cardigan (which had an emergency closure order served on it for food hygiene breaches and a rat infestation). Not going anywhere near this place until the rating significantly improves. And ANOTHER ZERO RATING.!!!

I really liked this place. A curry place on a boat is a little bit different, and didn't matter it didn't float down a river, the experience was still worth it. The food was good, especially the boat specials. My partner had the buttered chicken, but the sauce was quite sweet, however the texture and amount was good. The service was good and as a restaurant was quiet however as a takeaway was quite busy Personally, I loved it as somewhere different, price wise was quite competitive. I learned also that bombay duck is in fact a fish.

Really good Indian food on a boat! This place is a little out of the way being at the end of a car park on the riverside. It is well worth seeking out. Each dish we had was excellent and full of flavour. It is one of the better Indian meals we have had recently. This is also a friendly place to go. The boat itself could do with some TLC in places, the ceiling/roof has leaked at some point recently, which doesn't look great, but that's about the only thing to improve. I imagine the views are great when visiting before dark.

Let me start with the good parts of our meal and then the issues. Firstly the restaurant is on a boat, it’s quirky and a little unusual. The service was good (although we were the only people there), friendly and fairly speedy. The food was also good, not the best but definitely above average and not over priced. The naan bread was excellent. The issue, this place is filthy. Not bedraggled or rundown but dirty, the carpets are filthy and you can’t see out of the windows for dirt. Dirty table clothes are covered with plastic sheets..move these at your peril to reveal a multitude of stains. There are cobwebs on the inside of the windows. I’m generally not fussed about a bit of muck but this was another level. I imaging the upkeep of a old boat must be hard and never ending but there is no excuse for how dirty this place was and with some minor improvements it could be a fabulous place to eat

Food and service were fantastic the best Indian food I've had in a very long time. They were able to make me a cucumber raita that wasn't on the menu which was greatly appreciated. The nan breads were excellent. the service was good, the location interesting, the boat could do with a bit of maintenance and the carpet could do with a hoover it was covered in rice and poppadom bits. We were really disappointed with the food, it wasnt as good as previous visits. and expensive £100 for four of us - no starter just poppadoms and dips, 3 drinks and no desserts. All our dishes tasted the same and were too sweet full of sugar and no flavour. They all tasted like different coloured korma. The chicken makhani was full of giant cubes of something that wasn't chicken which tasted like they had been marinaded in sugar. (paneer?) no interesting indian flavours. shame. wont go back unless we hear the cooking as got more authentic and less sugar. we didnt need a sweet.

So disappointed with a recent visit here. This should be such a destination restaurant in Cardigan - an Indian restaurant, in a boat on the river. It was a beautiful evening and watched the river rise through the evening - stunning. However, from the moment you walk up from outside you realise the place is completely run down. The carpets falling apart, a strange musty/damp smell, the ceilings plaster is rotting, the toilets downstairs are disgusting, the chairs rickety and the decor v.dated. That coupled with the most hap hazard service I’ve experienced for years (30m wait for drinks, wrong/missing ones brought out), having to ask to order mains - felt like our table was forgotten and then 1hr+ wait for food was disappointing to say the least. I could hear mutterings across the restaurant too - not sure if this is a common thing, but the night we were there it was simply awful service. The manager was clearly making things worse for those trying to serve and was a bit of a shambles. The food was the only saving grace which probably explains other reviews I’ve seen - take away, you would not have experienced the above and had a decent curry. However, based on the general state of repair/cleanliness in front of house I dread to think what it’s like behind the scenes - which frankly put me off my food too. I rarely leave any reviews but had to share what my experience was like and sadly, I would not recommend going until there’s been a full refurb & some staff training. Such a shame because this should be a real great place to eat in Cardigan.

Use to order from here all the time, me and the partner thought after the new year we would treat ourselves. Yet we were left severely disappointed from the drop of standards which we had heard from other but thought we would take it with a pinch of salt. However, The samosas we’re under cooked, The korma was orange not yellow which left us wondering if it were what we ordered, and had a completely different flavour, added spice, not a little, i fact a lot to the point I couldn’t finish it, the Naan Bread was over done, dry and tough with a lot of burnt areas. All in all, we won’t be coming back here with the current standards.

We've been spending our summers holidaying in West Wales for about 9 years and, after a 2 year (Covid lockdowns etc...) break, returned and were very much looking forward to re-visiting the Shampan as it was always one of our favourite places to eat. We weren't disappointed! We are here twice during our September holiday working our way through utterly delicious dishes of beautifully HOT Goan Green Massala, coconutty Chicken Ceylon, buttery Makhani, slightly sweet & medium spiced Goan Methi and richly flavoured Madras. The prices have gone up a bit, but given the current financial climate this is perfectly understandable - especially as this restaurant is a BOAT and not on mains gas, and I certainly wouldn't consider the increases excessive. We're very much looking forward to returning next year whilst on holiday.

The boat makes for a really cool setting, and it's beautiful to watch the sun set over the river. If the boat itself was given a bit of a spruce - deep clean, new chairs, new carpets, less flies - it would have been 5 stars. Would still very much recommend though!

having spent 2 hours trying to find somewhere to eat between Newquay and Cardigan (being told by one pub that we will be lucky to find anyone serving after 8pm ) we settled on this option, the Shampan. I felt like I was back in India in a shack near the river. This boat which is now a restaurant must be the scruffiest place that I have ever eaten in. We were the only couple there, apart from Henry the vacuum cleaner and other odds and sods. Sticky carpet, stinking toilets that flooded whilst we were there and generally scruffy surroundings. The staff were lovely but scruffy and the food was ok but will definitely not go back. Price was high even with a discount so not value for money

Visited the Shampan in Cardigan this evening on a flooded wet and windy Monday to find it was open business as normal on the very characteristic quirky wooden boat. Couldn’t rate this restaurant more highly. The manager guaranteed us outstanding food whilst ordering and he was right! We ordered starters of prawn purée and lamb samosa packed with flavour with poppadoms and for main, the maharaja lamb dish and the Boat special with a side of saag aloo, keema pilau and naans cooked straight on a clay oven. Booked here for an evening meal as we were staying in the area. The Shampan is very quirky, its an old Chinese junk boat located on the River Teifi in Cardigan. The interior is a little old fashioned and as previously stated, quirky.Service was very friendly, nothing any trouble.Food was lovely, amazing. Loved all the dishes we had, with good portion sizes. As a couple we shared some of the dishes and there was plenty for us both to have. Served piping hot.My only criticism would be that all the windows were wide open and this made it feel really cold inside. I did close a couple of windows near me but it was still exceptionally cold. They would need to address this as it does make it feel uncomfortable at times,

Dinner on the boat with some friends on Monday evening, great to see a restaurant mostly full early in the week. Lovely sunset views down the river, The food was good, along with a reasonable wine list. Not too sure on the 2 gas canisters next to our table in the middle of the restaurant, there was also a random pair of trainers placed behind them. Major concern of the evening was the occasional waft of raw sewage throughout the restaurant, noticed this smell about 3 times during our evening, did see the staff opening the doors of the restaurant each time the smell returned, giving the impression that it was not an odour coming from outside on the river and was infact something to do with the plumbing on the boat.

New to the area so this Boat restaurant looked to be an attractive dining option. Inside it is looking rather tired shame really as a coat of paint and varnish would smarten it up. However We went on a slightly frosty evening and thought that it would be reasonably warm inside,,,,,Wrong!, I have never ever been to any indoor restaurants or any eating establishments that every diner was wearing an anorac or some form of thick jacket whilst dining!.I like to peruse the Menu over a glass of wine, a pappadum and pickles in a leisurely manner, but felt rushed to order the main course and shortly informed it was ready before I had even finished. I must admit that we ate our meal rather quickly owing to the fact we were both shivering from the lack of heat in the restaurant.Overall, Easy to get to with plenty of parking, Average food, rather cramped dining and on a cold evening very uncomfortable dining. would I return, No.

I wish I had read the reviews before we ate at shampan, quite a strange experience we had we turned up without a booking as we was on holiday in the area & thought we'd try our luck & see if their was any tables available, we thought the idea of eating an Indian on a boat looked really cool from the outside, the place was empty when we arrived so we asked a waitress if we could have a table... She checked with one of the owners & then showed us to a table before we sat down the owner (I think) seemed a little annoyed & started to moan at the waitress Infront of us saying the table was already booked, he did a bit of grumbling at her Infront of us which made us feel quite uncomfortable he never greeted us & after he was done grumbling at the waitress he mumbled something & walked to the bottom of the deck, I was confused & didn't know wether we could actually have a table or wether he wanted us to leave. The waitress then showed us to a different table, we ordered a drink & looked through the menu we felt really uncomfortable by this point as we felt unwelcome by the owner, it was awkwardly quiet & when the food arrived we couldn't help but notice the chef stood in the doorway watching, we also noticed all the Chest freezers not exactly hidden away from the costumers & the microwave ontop of one the fridges by this point we was already eating i did notice the chicken was quite chewy & in parts of the chicken I was undecided wether it looked a little pink or wether it was the lighting making it look that way we've been to lots of Indians around our end & this has got to be the worst chicken we've had I'm probably about 99% sure it was frozen & judging by the amount of freezers & the microwave it kind of confirmed our curiosity, however the price wasn't bad atall but the ship itself is seriously in need of some TLC very shabby could do with a deep clean, the toilets was smelly & didn't feel comfortable using them. I'm sure butter chicken is meant to be an orange colour but when it arrived I was confused as it looked like a macaroni cheese colour (white/yellow) & the chicken was just chopped in half rather than chunks, the sauce was quite nice but my family said it tasted like a bag of sugar that looked like a cheese sauce. We took family pictures while eating & when we looked back at them we noticed a peice of chicken on the floor in the background we decided to check reviews after our outing here & alot of people seemed to be complaining about the same things we are. however the nan bread, chips & rice was nice but was disappointed about the curry as that's the one thing you rely on to be nice at an Indian, we are not from this area so obviously won't be returning but thought we'd help others with this review.

When we arrived we a little disappointed, it was grubby and in need of a coat of paint and a thorough deep clean. The waitress showed little interest and we waited for a table while she talked on the phone. The extensive menu looked interesting, we had to call the waitress to give our order. The Chef actually served the food to our table, dressed in shirt and dirty jeans. The food was fairly good flavour and obviously freshly cooked. Attention by the waitress was very surly. Had to all for the bill The boat need a lot of redecorating, from where we were sitting we could see down the stairs at the open toilet door ! Probably a store room down there as the chef kept going down for supplies.I was not well for the next 36 hours, can't accuse but seemed to be a coincidence!Needless to say we will not be returning.

We went here when in the area 6 years ago and I did a review stating it was the best curry I ever had. It has yet to be matched. So I was keen to return.

Shame we didn’t get to taste the food this time round. We received a call 1.30hrs prior to our reservation to advise the table we had booked 3 days prior was no longer available and that the only availability was for 2 hrs later. Obviously greedy owners squeezing in more people. What an absolute joke!

Great food, friendly staff and superb location on a big barge, so good we visited twice in our week in Pembrokeshire! What more can I say

I love this Indian and try and come whenever we're in the area! It's very quirky on a washed up boat and the seating is limited but it's decorated very nicely and is great for a date night. Staff are friendly and service is quick. Definitely recommend the murgi mossala for a taste sensation. It has quite a kick to it mind. I really recommend this curry house with a difference if you're visiting Cardigan.

An Indian restaurant on a big barge, which is actually washed up - high over the water line is a rarity. Nevertheless, it is nicely fitted out - plenty of space, and an attractive menu

Love coming here with my partner on our date nights. Food is so lovely. Reasonable price and quick service. Only one issue I would say... The seating is slightly limited ( but it is on a boat). All in all. Great

We came upon this curry restaurant which is an old ship moored alongside the quay in Cardigan harbour. It is quirky, creaky with a quaint atmosphere. The food was really good. I had one of the best vegetable biriani's ever. Immaculate it isn't but the food and atmosphere more than compensate.

Our second visit to Shampan we went for my 60th Birthday, so glad we did the food was amazing! Still the best Indian food I've ever tasted! The food is well known locally and staff were busy with a brisk take away trade all evening but this did not affect the service of those dining in - service was prompt and the food arrived quickly the staff were very friendly and helpful. The poppadoms come with hot lime pickle, mango pickle (medium hot),the best yogurt and mint blend ever, mango chutney and extremely fresh chopped onion, poppadoms large, fresh and perfectly cooked. We chose 2 prawn dishes and two chicken dishes, an okra side dish and a spinach and potato side dish plus pilau rice - all were excellent with a range of hotness. Naan breads were about 15 inches across, we had garlic and peshwari - fabulous, lovely and light with a springy texture to the dough a perfect complement to the food without being too heavy, so you could eat more! What stands out most is the depth of flavour of the dishes, all wonderfully different - so much skill required to create such wonderful blending of flavours, subtle, complex, aromatic - we ate everything because we couldn't bear to leave it on the table, let feeling very full but very happy! Many thanks to the chef (or chefs!) All very reasonably priced. Lovely to go in the summer and watch the tide come in and watch the boats on the Teifi Estuary as you enjoy your meal. Amazing place! If you don't go you will miss something quite special... A birthday meal to remember for a long time!

Visited Late May bank holiday and to my surprise the restraunt was relatively quiet - it was only 7pm, so I suppose it was a little early for an Indian restaurant. Lots of choice on the menu, service was good and drinks and lovely fresh poppadoms and pickles were on the table in no time. The food arrived in good time and was delicious and plentiful, no complaints. The only thing that let's this place down is its appearance, the owners need to repair the leak damage in the ceiling, decorate and just give the windows a good clean - no point having views over the river if the our side of the glass is covered in cobwebs. Overall, a lovely quirky restraunt with good service and great food just needs freshening up a bit.

With regret I advise that this once fine Indian restaurant seems to have lost its way.

Found this place after being recommended to us. They weren't wrong...food was excellent, so was the service.. also the view is beautiful, right on the edge of the river. This will be the 1st of many visits.

I have been to this restaurant a few times now and, every time I come, it just seems to get better. The food is amazing and there is great service. I love the setting, I really love the food and love how close it is to my holiday home in Llangranog. The location is amazing and creative, on a boat with a beautiful view out over the estuary. I love watching the tides change through the windows and the water birds flying past. My favourite thing to eat is: seehk kebab to start, then chicken tikka mossala balti, with garlic naan and pilau rice. My only problem with it is that it is a bit run down on the inside and needs a bit of redecorating. Despite this though I would definitely recommend it for solo and family meals.

Lovely restaurant on river. We waiting a very long time for our food to arrive but when it did we weren't disappointed, it was delicious. The staff were pleasant and apologetic.

Turned up without warning on Easter weekend evening requesting a table for 5. Staff quickly arranged seating to accomodate and food was of good quality and good value. The place does need TLC but you get what you pay for and overall i would recommend it for a good value Indian.

Wasn’t terrible but certainly not a great standard the chicken tasted like processed chicken and I had Chicken Tikka plain meal as I have a stomach problem at the moment and it was more like a chicken Shish from the kebab shop next door which was excellent by the way so not awful but wouldn’t rush to go back
