We went to Le Pain Quotidient for a breakfast during a weekday. We were greeted in a very friendly manner at the entrance and taken to our table. Our server was Poonam Malik and she was absolutely amazing as she made sure we were served on time and there was nothing left that could drive an unsatisfactory response. The food was great!

I really fancied some scrambled eggs and bacon and deliberated for a while before going in as it comes to £14 here which is a lot. I decided to go for it, going in with high expectations. I was seated promptly but then ignored for 10 mins until I approached someone about ordering. I was expecting pretty high level, hotel style scrambled eggs, melt in the mouth, perfectly seasoned and made with cream perhaps, for the price. I was so disappointed to be presented with tough overcooked bacon and dry unseasoned scrambled eggs, the kind my 10 year old son makes. Not even worth half the price I paid. Next time will go to The Breakfast Club! Two stars given for lovely interior and nice coffee.

A terrible experience. Don't be fooled by the location and menu / foods on display. The coffee was as weak as ditch water , the milk curdled when I added it to the coffee and the pain au raisin was inedible. It was like trying to eat strips of rubber. When I complained I was told there was nothing wrong with it and I probably did nt like their glaze.

Came here for breakfast & it was very disappointing. The pastries were cold, tasteless & stale- the pain aux raisins had 3 raisins in it (yes we counted) & the glaze over it had no taste. The French toast was cooked lovely & looked amazing but tasted so bland - the small pot of chocolate sauce that came with it was the best part of the whole thing. We paid over £30 (including 2 drinks which also were just “ok”) it was very much a case of “style over substance” Staff were very friendly & we were seated promptly however. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

We stopped for a coffee this morning. We sat outside and the waiter spilled coffee over the table and onto my husbands trousers and jacket. I suggested the coffee might not be charged for. That was dismissed and I paid £8.49 for two flat whites. Unbelievably it included a 10% service charge!! Customer service nill.

Food and drinks, not good and overpriced for what you get. The quality of the food did not match the price and the hot chocolate was just warmed up and didn’t have too much of chocolate taste, left half of it. The Chai latte was just warmed up the milk with no Chai taste to it at all very poor quality. Better food and better prices in Oxford, go elsewhere.

My son and I popped in here when I was returning him to uni and we needed a quick bite to eat. It was at the top of the escalators out of the Westgate centre car park, we were starving and it looked like a standard sandwich brasserie. It called itself a Bakery & Restaurant. The menu seemed to be just what we wanted - qick, simple food and to be honest we didn't even look at the prices. The waitress was delightful. My son had a Croque Monsieur - 4 slices of bread with some ham and cheese and a green salad garnish. I had avocado on sourdough with some bacon on the side and it had a few pumpkin seeds etc. It was delicious and we were really pleased with our meal. Then the bill came. £40. It turned out that the (slightly glorified) ham and cheese toastie that my son had was £14!!! My avocado toast was £10 and the 3 rashers of bacon I had on the side were £4. Our drinks (tea and a hot chocolate) were another £7.50 and by the time they added service it came to £40. 24 hours later I am still absolutely furious and feel that I have been robbed blind. This is not a Michelin starred restaurant, and while I really did appreciate the quality of the meal, fundamentally it's a cafe in a shopping centre. There is nothing special about this that justifies £14 for a ham and cheese toast with a bit of salad. None of this takes super skilled chefs - most of it is toasties and salads - but they are charging the same amount as main courses at decent evening restaurants. Plus one loo wasn't working and the other was blocked. My fault for not looking at the prices on the menu, but one day later I remain absolutely outraged and really quite angry about what I've been charged. Never again.

I am usually wasteful and really don’t care about spending money on good food. But that was over the top!! £24 for a coffee, a cinnamon twirl and 2 pieces of thin bread that was actually… cheese on toast. It was meant to be Tartine!!! I am sorry but that’s not Tartine. Cheese on toast with a slice of smoked chicken from a super market pack, fully covered in rocket.

Ludicrously overpriced bog-standard food, most of which is cold and is assembled around a couple of bits of cold bread (no skilled labour involved). Having ordered, I opened my laptop. Within seconds, a member of staff apperared - far more quickly than they had appeared whilst I was waiting to be seated - to tell me that there was a 2 hour limit at the table. Apparently opening a laptop requires this instant warning. I would expect that after 1 hour and 59 minutes. Not after 1 minute and 59 nano-seconds. Go somewhere else. I did. Long before I had spent 2 hours worth of food and drink.

While Christmas shopping on a very cold day we popped in here for lunch. We were greeted after a slight wait and shown to a table. The table was sprayed and cleaned before we sat down. Our order was taken by a pleasant young lady and we didn’t have to wait too long for our food and drinks. I ordered the Lentil, leek and potato stew and my husband had scrambled eggs and bacon. My meal was served with both white and brown bread and the other dish came with toast both brown and white. We both enjoyed our food my stew was spicy and warming and the bread was very good, perfect for a cold day. We enjoyed our visit and thought the staff were friendly, professional and cheerful. It is probably a little more expensive than other places but I thought that it was worth it.

Lots of staff walking about but still queued for five minutes before a waiter even acknowledged us. In the meantime another couple queued behind us then walked away. When we were served we were told we'd have to wait for a table for two, despite there being at least three free tables for four (and nobody behind us in the queue). Such a ridiculous, short-sighted policy - we could have easily spent more on food than a group of four coming in for just drinks. And as well as losing our business today, we won't bother going back.

We went into John Lewis first for a coffee & cake but as they don’t cover there cakes etc anymore I left. This coffee shop is opposite JLP and we decided to have a coffee etc here. The waitress was very attentive and helpful especially as I asked first for a muffin, then noticed another customer eating a scone and changed my order to a scone. The cake’s were very nice and tasty unfortunately the milk scone was large and not enough jam & cream to cover it all, so my hubby finished it off without jam. It’s not the cheapest place for a quick drink etc. but the STING in the tail was the 10% service charge!!!! It’s definitely not a 5* restaurant!! So be warned!!! Sadly I won’t be returning

We were seated very quickly by a member of staff but then waited a very long time for our order to be taken. In fact we had to ask for our order to be taken. At this time there was an interview being carried out by one of the manager’s who could see the debacle that was going on and only did something when another customer interrupted them to ask for help on ordering. There seemed to be plenty of staff around but no one to take orders?! The menu was varied and our food did arrive quite quickly. We both had avocado on toast and added an egg and bacon which were priced at £2.50 EACH!! Extortionate pricing for add on items which made it VERY expensive. It was nice and tasty though thank goodness! We then had to wait again to ask and pay for our food. When the waiter came with the bill he had the card machine with him and had I not glanced at it first my husband would have just paid it - it was over £60! Upon then me saying wow that can’t be right we realised they had charged us for double the amount of add ons - as if they weren’t expensive enough! It then took an absolute age for them to rectify this. Don’t think I’ll go back as no apology etc was really given. Far too expensive!

Stopped here for a quick bite during a long day shopping in Oxford. I ordered a banana smoothie ... what I had failed to realise was that it was supposed to be chocolate, banana, almond, cacao, and oat milk (if I'd known there was all that in it, I'd have probably passed on it). What arrived (and what it tasted like) was more like chocolate powder mixed with water. No hint of banana (the main reason for me ordering it) and it was unlike any smoothie I have ever had in my life - and believe me when I say this is NOT a compliment. It was truly dire. My husband had the watermelon ice tea - which was more like regular cold tea (no sweetness to it at all - which you would think would be hard to achieve when watermelon is involved. I had the apple upside down cake, which was dry, and my husband had the brownie. He was particularly disappointed in it and said that it was overly chewy and tasted cheaply made. Needless to say this will be our only visit.

We love Le Pain Quotidien as the servers are consistently attentive and the food is of a quality that justifies the small price premium. We ordered a scone and a blueberry muffin, with fruit punch and iced tea. The drinks were served in jugs with fruit, so we could pour it out in our own time. What can I say.. it’s clean, it’s pleasant, the staff are nice, the food is ok (but expensive) but ., (and this is a BIG but) it has no soul, no realness or zero authenticity. It’s as dull as dishwater, with a crew of robotic staff who clock-on and clock-off their ‘shifts’ and repeat the same, day in, day out. Somebody shoot me! Yes it borrows some of the charming features of a quaint French bistro, the classical music, the semi-rustic wooden interior, the menu ~ but it’s all fabricated, it’s fake and the staff lack a certain autonomy and individuality. Of course, it’s another CHAIN which means that it must conform to a repetitive formula ~ the same formula you’ll find in every other Pain Quotidien.. in every identical high street - a chain means it must buy the same stuff, it must conform to a rigid system. How utterly depressing.. It’s a tried and tested and repeated formula which tends to typify chain outlets like these - and the very reason we should avoid them. Chain restaurants and outlets like Le Pain Quotidien are a rip-off, they’re fake and there is nothing original about any of them. They are illusionary ~ leading us all through a perception of what a French Bistro should be, except that it lacks one critical ingredient. The heart and soul. You’ll find classic French dishes, you’ll find some French Onion Soup, some Charcuterie and some patisseries - you’ll even find some other dishes like Chilli Sin Carne - which is a vegan version of the classic, but this is not an genuine place - it’s yet another copied formula, with robotic staff ~ a meet & greet person who hands you an bunch of menus as she guides you to a table, a waitress who struggles to understand and a view of the ‘chefs’ at the kitchen. Le Pain Quotidien ‘captures’ some of the essence of the real thing - but it is hideously fake, expensive and should be avoided.Prices are exorbitant - simply because the rents in shopping malls are ridiculously high, which means that local, independent chefs and operators can’t even get a look in. And so these chain style nightmare establishments are the only operators who can even afford to be here. It’s the start of the end of ‘normal’ and authentic style and charm. It’s fake from top to bottom.Bring back owner / managed small-scale establishments and please, try to find a place that isn’t satisfying share-holders and investors. Otherwise we will lose the very essence of what hospitality is all about. Genuine, authentic charm and individuality.

The place was practically empty; we waited, as instructed on the annoying little blackboard by the door, to be seated. One staff member was busy with another customer but we were the only people standing there waiting to be seated. We waited. And waited. Two other staff members were available to take us to one of the vast number of available tables but seemed to be in a world of their own. Neither of them appeared to notice us despite the fact that we were obviously anxious to get in and order. I went up to one of them, and asked her if we might be seated. She clearly took umbrage at my asking such an outlandish thing. and as if to punish me for requesting to be treated like a paying customer, replied in a rather theatrical and childishly petulant tone “ooh, so you want to be seated do you....?!”. Really seasonal too on a rainy autumnal day! The place was busy and the staff helpful, very much enjoyed the experience and recommend!!!

Went in today as wanted to try somewhere new ,I wont be returning .The drinks were lukewarm and overpriced. The food looked ok but there seemed to be no care or attention given to the presentation .There was no flavour in the chicken and butternut toastie -very bland -which was disappointing. The service wasnt much better and the waiter was uninterested in serving us.The toilets were not very clean either.

We have visited twice, for coffee and pastries and it was lovely - it is very popular, and another client mentioned they had to wait for so long for food - but it is nice for groups. Outdoor seating as well.

Went into the cafe and spoke to the barista. I asked for a latte and a hot chocolate. The lady asked if we wanted take out or to have in. I told her we wanted to have in but sit on the tables outside. She said that they didn't do table service for the tables outside. SO I asked for the drinks in a take out cup to drink outside, to which she said she doesn't think that we would be allowed to sit there and drink with take away cups.

It has such a wonderful atmosphere inside. The staff are all so nice, and always working. The deserts are quite simply some of the best ever. Only downside is the drinks aren't HOT, but the are at a good level to drink straight away, don't leave them until the end. Overall my mother and me enjoyed our time here, will be hurrying back!!

This place has the BEST almond croissant, coffee tastes a bit weak but decent enough. The environment is nice too. However it’s a place that you order at table and ask for bill when you leave, like a restaurant, which makes you don’t comfortable stay too long . I prefer those that order and pay in the counter .

I never knew about the existence of this chain of French cafès/restaurants until I found one at Westgate in Oxford, early this month. Although it seems as though even the French have compromised their culinary traditions in order to survive their UK catering competitors, I was quite impressed with all vegan and GF options, including desserts. Welcoming and friendly, we spent a couple of relaxing hours over lunch time. Highly recommended!

OK....we wandered in at lunchtime, sat down and I froze when I looked at the menu. Not normally a healthy food, organic fan and I thought I would hate the place....instead, I was pleasantly surprised. We ordered a meat and cheese sharing board, wasn't a huge amount but was really filling. There were some lovely touches, like apple slices and pickled pink onion (??) and it came with really tasty brown bread which I wolfed down (and I hate brown bread). As we'd had a 'healthy' meal we also had puddings. The other half had a chocolate coated meringue, which he ate in 3 seconds flat. I had the caramel brulee but wasn't prepared for how delicious it would be - brulee in a wafer thin pastry case with thick caramel on top. THE best brulee I've ever had (and I consider myself an expert). I'm now slightly obsessed with them and need to buy one every time I pass one of these stores...so thanks for that. Service was great and we will definitely be going back. Liittttle bit on the pricey side, which is probably good, or I would have eaten the entire menu.

My husband and I visited this restaurant a month ago for breakfast. We loved that the food was fresh and felt home cooked. We were so impressed with the service and food we decided to return today to have an evening meal, how disappointed we were. We both had the chicken and leek pie, when it arrived it looked and tasted like a cheap supermarket pie. A thimble sized pot gravy which was part of the meal arrived which wasn’t tasty or appetising. The vegetables were sparse and all roasted which didn’t look or taste of anything. When approached by the server he asked if we had enjoyed our meal and my comment was no, he didn’t ask for any explanation or offer any apologies. Overall I will not be eating in this restaurant again as quality of food was below average and customer service the same. I would not recommend this restaurant hugely disappointed experience.

The Decor & presentation drew us into the restaurant. Had South African visitors with me, whom I thought would be impressed. HOWEVER ...... Sub-standard food for the very high prices & very minimal portions. I ordered Avocado Toast & Scrambled Egg. Expected a decent helping of Avocado. Instead, there was a scraping of it on the toast, the way one would scrape on Butter & 2 little slivers of unmashed Avo. This cost £9.45. The ingredients on the plate must've cost under £1 !! My guest ordered Croque Monsieur 2019 @ £11.95 .... oh my word ! This was even worse. Very hard toasted bread, basically inedible, with 1 thin slice of dried-out ham with a very light smattering of cheese. Half of this meal was discarded. The crust of the toast was so hard that not even a knife could cut through it. The staff were apologetic, but it appears that food quality & portions are dictated & they cannot go beyong what owners specify. I am totally amazed that this restaurant is still open ???

I've been a regular at Le Pain Quotidien's Westgate branch for a few months now. Their baguettes are the absolute best you can get in Oxford, I love their sourdough multigrain bread too. The staff are very helpful, especially if you're not very clued up on sourdough bread. They are always happy to explain and let you taste a slice. They also make a really good latte!

Having had a very poor experience at a nearby café we gave Le Pain a try. Thoroughly enjoyed both visits. Possibly not the cheapest place in town but good quality food. We found all the staff we came into contact with very helpful and friendly. We always buy one of their sourdough rye breads to take home. This is excellent bread and very good value compared with a lot of artisan bakeries.

Two of us visited yesterday for coffee and scone. Very quickly seated and order taken promptly. Coffee brought without scone, which we had to wait for for 15 minutes or more despite chasing. Coffee lukewarm and therefore almost finished by time very stodgy scone arrived. Texture indicated that it had been reheated in microwave. Server not interested in our comments having asked if we had enjoyed our coffee. Never handed the bill, it as on the side by the till and we were told the total. Whilst my friends credit card was being processed I read the Bill and saw that at the bottom in smaller print was "optional service charge" of 10%. Too late not to pa, left with bad taste and felling of having been had. Not a good experience, will not repeat.

I had booked a table for five. On arrival there was no record. However the waitress was helpful is finding one. When ordering food and drinks , a jug of water was also requested. Finally on the third time of asking it arrived. Waiting staff were fairly elusive. One coffee was missing when the coffee order arrived as well. Service could definitely be improved. A service charge is automatically added to the bill.

I came here to get breakfast today. So they ran out of chocolate brownies on the display, the guy at the register kindly asked inside if they could do anymore, but unfortunately it’s going to take quite a while. Also, they don’t do flavours for their coffee so I only had plain cappuccino instead of my usual one with caramel. But none of these would have really mattered until I was asked to move from my table because apparently if I’m only having coffee, I shouldn’t be sitting there. The guy asked me to sit at the big communal table at the centre instead. How very rude! I should have just gone to bloody costa! To be fair, the coffee wasn’t great too.

I went to the Oxford Westgate branch of Le Pain Quotidien last Saturday morning with my wife, (in an attempt) to treat her to a nice Belgium breakfast.
