Situated in the heart of Knaresborough is this stylish Indian restaurant. The menu is largely typical but sufficiently varied to make it attractive. We had the Thursday menu which was reduced in price but with enough options to make it first choice the fish pakora was freshly deep fried on the outside and succulent inside. My wife enjoyed the mixed lamb kebab. for the main my king prawn dopiaza was tasty but slightly too many onions and needed more spice. My wife's garlic spicy chicken was exactly as it said. This was excellent value (cash only on the Thursday menu) and the staff always smiling and attentive. The place was busy but the food never late in cooking. For Indian food my Indian wife gave it the thumbs up.

First order absolutely gorgeous

One of the worst restaurants I have ever seen. Waiter was too rude. Meals are not tasty. Waiter brought meals that we have not order and included to the bill. Do not come definitely.

Ate there last night with my two sisters, it's a shame the place was very quiet as the food and service were excellent and the staff were lovely

Food was disgusting we didn't eat main course at all Agreed to pay for starters which were okay But curry was awful Waiter said we should of asked for Asian style ? Err we were in a "Indian Restaurant " We didn't know what the difference was ?? More edible maybe ? The Owner became very aggressive pointing in my face Been going to this Restaurant for years before new owners have taken over .... Disgusted

the food was not good, they messed up our order, the food was cold and we couldn’t get tap water.

They messed up our order even though we where the only people in the resturant. Most of the food was cold when we got it and and the food was very sweet and it tasted horrible.

Went after reading reviews as looking for Indian food in the area. It’s BYO which is always good. Food was good but service was very rushed. We had popadoms, a starter and mains and were in and out in 45 minutes. We asked for a break between starters and mains but kept being asked if ready now for mains. This spoiled our experience. Would probably return to try again

The food was lovely, if you like fish have to try the fish pakora is absolutely beautiful!! Very friendly staff and great service.

Ordered a takeaway and it was on time, the waiting staff were lovely and polite. The food was hot and all of the dishes were really good quality, well-seasoned and this has to be one of the best Indian takeaways we have had.

Last time we went the place was very busy and the atmosphere was really good. Today (13 Jan 2024) was a different story. They no longer serve Alcohol which we were not aware of so had to leave my wife alone and go into town to buy drinks. Restaurant is happy for you to bring your own and do not charge for corkage but for us its not what we are looking for. We left around 9.30pm on a Saturday night and only three other customers in the restaurant. Food is good and staff are attentive but sadly the overall experience isn't what we look for in a night out.

Excellent food and service. I'm not from Knaresborough so I took a complete flyer booking into this place. We were warmly welcomed and royaly fed. From the simple things like the naan to the poppadoms to the veggie and meat curries it was outstanding. Thank you.

First order was fabulous. Went away very happy and couldn’t wait to order again. 2nd order was very disappointing and stressful. Mistakenly ordered for collection(baby brain and sleep exhaustion at work) in which we called straight away and apologised and agreed for delivery as we have a 7 week old and no car so wasn’t able to come out and had ordered as we had guests over who we had spoken highly of the last time we had ordered and we were all very excited to celebrate our newborn and have some much needed stress free meal. However it went downhill from here, after waiting over an hour for delivery (we were informed it would be longer which was completely fine) we were called by the delivery driver who was supposedly new to the area and couldn’t locate our address on the new estate. We tried multiple times to advise of the specific directions however he didn’t understand anything we were saying and kept driving round in circles on the estate further down the road and repeating back incorrect street names and in the end my husband had to walk 10 minutes down the road to collect the now cold food having pre paid for it and tried to ask the driver for 25 minutes where he was and if he could go back to the roundabout and carry on to the correct address. Over £70 worth of food freezing cold, two hours wasted and my Husband stressed out along with our guests and myself. A week later we have been offered a very sad £20 compensation voucher which not only they wish for us to pick up (don’t drive so not the easiest) but this wouldn’t even get two meals never mind 4 and fobbed off by the restaurant that is all they can do and numerous excuses piled on. Absolutely shocking and very sad that we have been treated this way by a local restaurant who has such great reviews. Having just moved to the area we were delighted to have initially found such a wonderful place however this was VERY short lived and now wishing we hadn’t reordered and spoke so highly of them to our friends. They obviously don’t care about their customer or their reputation. Would avoid.

Visited when visiting area spotless premises extensive menu staff very friendly and helpful food served swiftly and very tasty one of best Indian meals would have liked to see main meal served on heater as food tended to lose heat to quickly otherwise cannot fault will visit if in area again

We were a party of 7 adults (family). Our family members, from Lancashire, were very impressed with the choice and quality of the food. The service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We were the family hosts for the weekend and are so glad we chose this restaurant which is almost on our doorstep! The staff and chefs were immaculately dressed too. Can highly recommend. Cannot wait to go back.

Wow absolutely wonderful, the food was absolutely fabulous, back home in Shropshire I have a chat Massala as a main course but it wasn’t on the menu,the head of house went over the individual dishes with me as an alternative. His choice was absolutely spot on and I made short work of devouring it. As for the staff just like the food the quality was fantastic, All of the staff were friendly and attentive and they made us feel that we were regulars. I have said to my friend next time we are up this way she is to book us in

We travel extensively and try Indian restaurants often to great disappointment compared to our fantastic home monthly destination However here we have serious competition. I normally eat Madras hot, and either chicken tikka or tandoori king prawns. Typically the chicken is over cooked and as for the prawns….. Here however we both had chicken tikka as our protein, and it was tender and succulent despite being sliced which is normally the kiss of death, so excellent The big difference however was that I was recommended to try a special Naga sauce, advised as between madras and vindaloo but with a lot more flavour than just heat for heats sake. It was exactly as recommended, superb and so much more nuance than the usual sauces. Big excellent nans as well. Shame it’s such a long way from home. Highly recommend

Got take away for 1st time from Lawai Spice. It was fantastic. The samosas were packed and tasty, The zingha special was the best thing I've tasted in ages. Each mouthful a new flavour. Not too spicy either. My son had karahi and thoroughly enjoyed that too. Fab. New Knaresborough favourite

Great customer service freindly staff food unremarkable the price Is reasonable me and my partner been twice now and loved it every time served with a smile and always helped if needed if you don’t understand the menu they will explain it so 10/10 for customer service

We visited for the first time this evening and had a fantastic time. Our food was delicious, the five of us each ate a different dish and all enjoyed every bite. The pasanda was the best I've ever had! Staff were all very friendly and patient with our many questions about the dishes and the new decor makes for a really nice atmosphere. We'll definitely be back again.

3 strikes and, I'm out... Was pleased to hear that the formally known "Spice Village" had changed hands, very much needed in my opinion. First 2 times we had been were brilliant, couldn't fault the food or service, very accomodating and chatty, food has been excellent. Last time we visited 19/8/23, was something else. As a vegetarian I ordered the vegetable Rogan Josh but was served a chicken Rogan Josh, unfortunately had not realised and had eaten some, I mean all you have to do is not put chicken into it... Server was a bit frustrating to say the least, which was also a bit unfortunate, the only thing we had taken off the bill was some onion rice. Sad to say we won't be returning for a while which is a shame as the food has been pretty good. The last good curry house is within grasp, but this one has missed the mark as an essential tasty find.

Had a lovely family meal last night, the food was excellent and the thali trays were a really nice change, a variety of different dishes in smaller amounts including rice. The lamb chops were excellent and the service was second to non. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will go again. It’s nice to have a good Indian restaurant near home

You won’t be disappointed eating at this restaurant. Went with my friend. Good range of vegetarian food. I had paneer shashlick and garlic naan, very tasty and staff very helpful. Highly recommend.

After looking forward to visiting for the first time, I left very disappointed. Starter was lovely, then the main was brought out. Waiter said what dish was, but that was not what I ordered. He took it back to the kitchen and came back saying...

This was our first time ordering from here as we didn't realise it wasn't the same owners as the previous restaurant here until recently. It is 100% definitely new people. We went in person to order as my partner had some allergies and wanted to double check ingredients and the guys couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. They were really funny and we had a good laugh with them before ordering our food to collect later. I've lived in Knaresborough for two years and have never had an Indian meal as good as where we used to live near Wakefield - until now - finally we have found a restaurant that serves absolutely impeccable properly cooked food that is clearly made by a genuine chef and not just reheated meat in a generic sauce.This had fresh vegetables and seasonings. It was spotless in the restaurant and all of the staff in between serving customers were cleaning, which is reassuring to see. This is now going to be our go to takeaway restaurant. Can't recommend enough. 5+*****

Been 3 times now and love it every time. They have all the classic dishes but also some amazing twists with different dishes. Our new favourite Indian now in Knaresborough.

Came here to the lawai on Monday for a meal with my wife, not from Knaresborough and can say that the starters and curry was beautiful, staff very attentive and polite, will definitely be going again when visiting Knaresborough. Keep it up lads👌

An extraordinary quality - service ambience and food - all fresh ingredients

Tried Lawai Spice last night for the first time since they moved from Selby to Knaresborough. The food and the service were both top notch, and nice refreshed atmosphere and decor with the new owners. The previous Spice Village had become very tired and the food mediocre, so nice to have another 10 out of 10 place back in the town. Well done Lawai Spice - we will be back! :0)
