We found this hotel on line and it grabbed us straight away tucked away in a little village but when you get there the hotel is full of what you need and more a pool,a gym very large and a beautiful spa. We then found the on site restaurant the fat abbot which served very delicious and mouth watering food.and a beautiful selection of wines.the hotel itself as its own on site restaurant but due to cover it was not open, this was not a problem as the fat abbot next door belongs to the hotel. The staff at the hotel were some of the best I've come across they were very polite would sort out any problem if you had any and they were at your side when ever you needed anything. I belive this was down to the overall manager whom any one would love to have working for them, she totally new every thing about the hotel the rooms restaurant spa gym etc she made our stay a complete pleasure in fact we will be going back for our wedding anniversary all due to janet what a great lady you are. Thank you for sorting out our first visit and hopefully many more Yours sincerely Mr & Mr's D J Riley . Lincolnshire Uk

I choose the Lascelles as the building seem beautiful and it was a convenient midway point for people coming from opposite directions. The menu seem very appetising. What a disappointment in reality. The starters was okay. The sirloin steaks was chewy, rubbery and overdone. The pork loin was rather tough and the pomme frites were so hard they crumbled when I rolled a few between my fingers. I returned my steak, it came back just as bad. My mother took one bite of her pork loin and left it. My husband and sons tried they best but gave up in the end. We were offered complimentary desserts. Now normally I expected a soufflé to be light this one was so stodgy! My teenage son ever the diplomat said to the manager type “the service is lovely it’s just food that’s a let down”. Would I return? No! Would I recommend the place? No! It was my birthday, I had a fantastic day leading up to this farce of a meal which they had the nerve to charge £180 for. Never again! I felt so bad because I chose this place.

Although the quality of the food was of a high standard my wife was disappointed at the meagre portion of fish she was served at dinner. I would recommend that guests use the Fat Abbott restaurant in preference to the Lascelles. Also prices are more reasonable for both food and drinks

Stayed in the hotel for the evening and on arrival told restaurant was fully booked. Was very disappointed but later that day asked again if they could squeeze us in and they did. Now here is the funny part on arrival there was only 5 tables all night. The restaurant had another 20 empty. Back to the food, it was very good. I had venison carpaccio that was stunning. Then rabbit which was nice too. We finished with the cheese platter which was amazing. Service was okay and friendly but certainly needs improving in its approach to guests. Although all staff were very pleasant.

We stayed at the Parsonage hotel for 2 nights and had breakfast in the restaurant both mornings .Very nicely set out and staff very attentive. Tea and coffee brought to the table....really good choice of hot food and good quality, the bacon was thick and lean. There was also a menu to order...I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs both mornings as it was that good. Fresh fruit, yogurt, excellent muffins and plenty more. One of the best hotel breakfast’s I have had.

Part of a special offer of 2 nights and 1 evening meal in Lascelled. The meal did not disappoint. Juniper smoked duck breast to start, steak for me cooked as I like it and garlic chicken for the wife. We both had the fried potatoes with the pancetta, lovely. A very chocolate desert for my wife which she loved and cheese and biscuits for me. Homemade biscuits a nice touch. Lovely comfortable restaurant and excellent staff. Highly recommend.

This restaurant very much has that old fashioned English hotel breakfast room/restaurant feel and so is pretty much scoring a zero on atmosphere. That said, the building itself and grounds do have a real old English charm, somewhat diminished by the busy A19 road at the end of the drive. As for the food, it was ok. Pleasant enough, the presentation was better than the quality of the dishes. But certainly nothing special and nothing I'll be actively seeking to experience again.

We had high hopes for here, but as we ate breakfast and evening meal in here it did moss the mark a little, not sure if there had been a recruitment of new staff but there is some way to go yet, it was busy with a wedding being held at the same time, but at this price it needs to be right every time, saying that the breakfast was fine, but a simple request to have tomatoes and mushrooms on with my served scrambled eggs resulted in being told to wait till it was served at my table then go and go to the buffet bar ( not in the same room) and get my own, even when I questioned it the result was I was served it without, the staff then seeing my disappointment went to get some, but very much missing the point, this is put out as a first class place, it needs to up its service. The main meal looked fantastic but the taste did not live up to the look.

Started with a relaxing drink in the bar while we studied the menu, our order was taken by a very pleseant waitress who later showed us to our table. We ate from the fixed price menu which had enough variaty to satisfy. All the courses were cooked well and presented beautifully but if I'm honest lacked quantity ( style over substance). This did not detract over the quality and enjoyment however. Wine list is limited but a decent choice of styles. Staff are all excellent and really do deserve a mention. I visited this hotel for the sole purpose of dining with other ladies, which included hosting a guest, whilst my husband attended a business meeting. My overall impression was one of poor quality in both standards and service. The "Simply Yorkshire" menu which we chose, as opposed to the a la carte, was limited to say the least but provided some reasonable options for the one course £14.50, two course £20.50 or three course £24.95 varieties but significantly side dishes at £2.95 were extra. Not an attractive price range and certainly not good value for money. My choice of char- grilled sirloin steak, which incurred a supplement of £3.50, was minuscule in size, not cooked to the standard that I requested and in summary was very nothing other than sub-standard. The courses offered to my lady colleagues were equally less than impressive and had I not been hosting an unfamiliar guest I would have certainly made further representation. However a hotel is judged on the standard which it purveys and although the food was somewhat inferior, the service offered by the young female waitresses employed was clearly unsupervised and did little to enhance the stature of the hotel’s restaurant. The presentation of the final bill was something of a debacle with the meals recorded being wrong and charges made for courses that had not been ordered. If ever there was a case for an efficient front of house management approach this must be it as the general attitude of the staff however was of complete indifference. This hotel is a thoroughly charming building in an equally pleasant location and with the facilities available should be a hive of activity. I regret that this was most certainly not the case on my visit and they need to raise their standards considerably before I will frequent this restaurant again.

We had to seek out a staff member to express our disappointment and the staff told us that's just how it is.We swiftly left without finishing the afternoon tea. As we were staying overnight at The Parsonage on the 14th (see separate review) we booked a table for 7.45. We arrived at the restaurant at 7.40 and were directed to the bar where we sat....and sat....and sat as the bar emptied of people who had come in after us.Eventually someone took our order and we sat....and sat.....and sat. At 8.40 we were about to get up and go to The Black Bull when we were shown to our table without a word of apology. The wine we had ordered was still sitting unopened on the table when we sat down and I had to ask to have it opened. The person who did this was at a loss to understand why people drank wine with their meal as she only liked drinks that tasted of fruit.I gently reminded her that grapes were the main constituent of wine and I started to look around for hidden cameras or the sight of Basil Fawlty further down the room! When the main course arrived I had opted for pork. The rounds of pork were absolutely delicious but the chunk of accompanying belly pork was crisp on top but undercooked and slimy underneath and inedible. The attempts at "nouvelle cuisine" veg and potato were instantly forgettable. My wife had monkfish which was lovely accompanied by butternut squash risotto which was an interesting idea but badly under seasoned. For dessert I had a chocolate confection which was pleasant whilst my wife had "whipped yorkshire brie" which was a sham, consisting of a dollop of "brie" between two small biscuits of indeterminate origin.I asked for a port but it never arrived and by this stage I just couldn't be bothered to chase it up.Like the rest of the hotel the decor in the restaurant is unappealing and despite the use of red to give the dining area some 'warmth' it still comes over as sterile. The thin and awkward shape of the room is also unsuited to the upmarket image the management are trying to project. The staff who served us were friendly and keen to please and do well, but were seriously undertrained even for a restaurant which doesn't have the pretentious aspirations of "Lascelles"."Fine dining" ? Well, someone in the kitchen clearly has some good ideas but something's going amiss somewhere down the line and there is an urgent need for some exacting quality control as the dishes go out .I think potentially good meals were let down by a lack of care and attention to detail in the kitchen and poor front of house service for which I don't blame the staff who served us at all . Inadequate training is a management issue and needs to be addressed.Would we return? As things stand,no,and in all honesty I couldn't recommend this place to anyone else.

My daughter had surprised us with a gift of Christmas Dinner at the Parsonage Hotel, York as the family were abroad for the festivities. We had passed it regularly and remarked how lovely it looked. Upon entering we said we had a booking for dinner and gave our name, we were directed to the bar area or lounge, the lounge seemed really old fashioned and quiet so we opted for the bar and purchased drinks, I felt that drinks should have been offered on a tab and a name taken. The bar was still old fashioned and the decor needed updating. At 12.40pm I I asked my husband what time are we booked and he replied 12.30pm, at that point a manager type person and another came in with a clipboard and asked for our name, which they couldn't find at first. Then about 5 minutes later they came back and asked again. We were then directed into the Dining Room, the staff were friendly although nervous and inexperienced. I was asked if I would like a drink and I replied a glass of Pinot Grigio and I was told there was only Merlot! I said is there no white wine and he replied only House White by the glass. Christmas Day and they won't open a bottle of wine. I might have had a few glasses but I wanted to play it by ear. I opted for the House White, which was cheap and nasty. We were asked to view the menu and when the drinks arrived they took the order, we both were shocked as there was no Turkey, only Goose, beef or Cod. We both decided on the Beef as not sure about Goose, the four courses all had to be ordered together including the sweet. The starter was tiny but okay, the soup was nice, the bread was 2 white rolls cold, one with seeds looked like they had come out the freezer and microwaved. No choice of bread even brown which we prefer. The food was delivered at speed, immediately we put our cutlery down, the plate was whisked away and the next course put down. When the main arrived we both looked at each other as there was a tiny puddle of food in the middle of the plate, 3 tiny pieces of beef, underneath looked like a minute pile of Dauphonois, tasteless so could have been anything and 2 tiny carrots looked like sewing needles for decoration to fill a space . We sat and waited for the Roast Potatoes, Brussels, Parsnips, Yorkshire Pudding, nothing! that was the dinner we ate slowly to last a bit longer in fact we started to laugh. Was someone playing a joke. The plates were whisked away and Xmas Pudding which was small and stodgy arrived. We were asked about coffee and it arrived on a tray with 2 cups and saucers, a coffee pot and he mentioned with a smile, you have also got mince pies as a gesture of goodwill! , He left the tray for us to set out ourselves. I have made better looking Mince Pies, they were home made, tiny, thick pastry with no filling and a cut out star on top. During the coffee the waiter returned with the bill for the drinks and emphasised there was no rush, just take your time. When you are starving how long does it take to drink cold coffee and eat a dry mince pie. From arrival to departure we were approximately 1 hour including 20 minutes waiting to be seated . We were back in our car, thinking what was that all about for £120.00 of our daughters hard earned money. It took me longer to get ready than it took for the meal. The place needs updating, old fashioned no atmosphere, lessons in how to treat your customers in 2012. Where's the Hotel Inspector?.

Initially booked a spa deal for use of the facilities and an additional treatment that was extra. The staff were warm and welcoming and for the main part of the day the facilities were accessible. Later in the day more people arrived making the pool a little too crowded to use. This is a new addition to The Parsonage but maybe a good thing as though the staff at the spa lacked confidence, they made up for this with their enthusiasm and willingness to deliver a good service. We both pre booked treatments of our choice, which gave 20% discount for pre booking. These were exceptional. We booked a twin room to follow this so we could relax and enjoy the experience. The twin room was to a high standard, very spacious and clean. We did not dine here apart from the cooked breakfast, which was included in the over night stay. This was substantial and delicious. A great variety with as much as you could eat. Would recommend this place and would love to return to repeat the experience.

We stayed in the hotel for two nights as part of our kids 21st & 18th celebration. We decided to eat in the resturant on the second evening. We wanted it to be good as members of our family were joining us. There were 11 guests. We were round the corner from the rest of the clients so it was private but perhaps a little quiet. I understand we may have disturbed other dinners and the lay out of the room did not allow any other configuration of the tables It was a fantastic meal everything was hot and cooked to perfection. The staff in the restaurant were attentive.& very courteous. My only comment would be that no one served our soft drinks and wine. The drinks were left unopened in the middle of the table. We were on a large round table and this was a little awkward for our elderly guests and one of us had to keep jumping up to replenish their drinks. On the whole a lovely meal in a wonderful setting...! Well done and thank you.

The hotel is a stunning building with beautiful grounds. I was welcomed warmly by the receptionist and the waiter was very efficient and friendly when taking our drinks order and serving them. The food was very good [prawns platter and risotto], and the service excellent. The only negative was that some of the crockery was chipped. This was a great shame and quite surprising in such grand surroundings!

Just taking a look at this hotel for a friends birthday and very surprised to see the range of views - how can the reviews be so varied - are they all for real ?

Lascelles restaurant at the Parsonage Country House Hotel in Escrick near York can be summed up in one word...excellent! The staff at the hotel are friendly and welcoming, and on arrival you will be shown to a delightful bar where drinks can be enjoyed whilst the menu is perused. After ordering you will sit in a relaxed atmosphere whilst your food is prepared, then you will be shown into the restaurant and presented with your meal. The surroundings are of the highest quality. The food is well prepared and presented, and again of the highest quality. The menu is straightforward and meals are unpretencious, just well cooked and delicious. This is a place where you can enjoy a good meal, or a special occasion.....either way you will not be disappointed.

After reading the other reviews on this page about this restaurant, i was dubious about whether or not to eat in this restaurant during our recent visit to the Parsonage Hotel, however we chose to eat here and i'm so glad we did.The food was absolutely delicious!! It was well cooked, well presented and excellent value for money. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. Don't be put off by the misguided opinions of the other reviewers as they clearly have no taste what so ever!!Can i recommend the beef in ale pie in perticular as this was perefction!!

Horrificly overpriced, paid £140 for the 'Family Room'. Kids were on camp beds in what is a double room with prison blankets on, room decor is old and grubby and the shower was un-usable as the bath tap remained running but scalding water so you couldn't shower. Complained and one deputy manager was helpful the other a waste of space!! Never returning or advising anyone else to go. There all about the profits

My wife had food from the set menu and was delighted with the food. I chose from the 'a-la-carte' menu . The meat was as tough as old boots and the vegetables raw. Delightful staff and good service did not compensate for an appalling meal for which I should not have paid!

1970's food quality at 2011 prices. Overcooked Yorkshire puddings, soggy veg and an unimaginative menu. The wine was cheap and nasty. If the French ever wanted a place to prove that the British cannot cook this place they would go to. The food gave the impression it had come staright form frozen packets. For neraly £22 a head this was shocking quality

We decided to stage our reunion lunch (5 colleagues who worked together; last all saw one another 19yrs ago) here on reading the luncheon menu online and after one of us had been a regular customer for cafetiere coffee and homemade biscuits until a few years ago and another had had her daughter's wedding there, though even more years ago. What a disappointment! What a travesty!!On entering the extremely fishy-smelling dining room, we chose from the pretty unimaginative 2 courses for £10 menu: soup/melon/sardines & chicken/salmon/pie, thinking 'Oh well it is reasonably priced'. When the 'sardines' arrived the 3 of us who'd chosen that could hardly believe our eyes. I think they'd divided one sardine [frozen? surely not tinned] between the 3 of us - though I didn't look at the others' plates closely at that time. I had about 1.25 inches of a single tail-end sardine opened out into 2 halves with a drizzle of something coloured & indefinable by its side, some lambs tail leaves (that I happen not to like) & 2 HUGE pieces of very dry toasted ciabatta. The whole thing was so ludicrous we decided to plod on - assuming the kitchen had to economize in preparation for the main course. We had to ask for lemon wedges to make it taste of anything other than indefinable fishy-fish - 2 mouth-not-fuls & it was gone!! The lemon wedge was bigger than the ‘piece’ of fish!!When the same three of us +1 received the chicken breast main course we all stared in disbelief: There was a puddle of mushroom risotto with a single chicken breast, cut in 2 horizontal pieces, covering it & 3 POTOATOES, the latter we assume to fill the otherwise almost empty plate. In all my life I have never been offered rice or risotto with potatoes!! Have you? [please see photo] In addition, nothing tasted of anything. Bland wasn't in it. This is not one person's view but 4. As the guest to my right caught my eye she suddenly stopped mid-air and said 'Oh!' & proceeded to pull quite a long dark hair our of her fork of food (she's blond). At this point I went to find assistance. The girl I found didn't seem to know what to do until we prompted her that a new dish was needed - we had to point out the hair on the white table cloth as her only reaction was: 'Where's the hair?' We asked if we could have some veg as we couldn't eat rice & potatoes. She did bring out some veg’s that, although al dente as they should be, tasted again of absolutely nothing. Having warned us that the meal would take another 20 minutes to replace it appeared in perhaps 7-10, at which point the diner to whom it was given remarked that she was sure it was the same dish. We no longer had the confidence to say - no it can't be! The £14 bottle of wine was extremely unremarkable. There was another first to come – I had to eat my untouched bread-roll AFTER my main course [see photo] because I was still hungry and also despite the sandy ciabatta starter. We were all sad as none of us wanted dilemma and a sense of being ripped off to upset our reunion. When the table was cleared I thought that I might lift the occasion by seeing what The Parsonage, Escrick, York, could do to salvage the situation. I was going to ask for a gesture towards a dessert but no one else felt incline to touch another example of their food - so smilingly I asked if they mightn't see their way to offering us coffee 'on the house' as a compensatory gesture. Well I might as well have asked for the Crown Jewels!! The girl said she couldn't ‘do that’, so we asked if we could speak to someone senior. We were told her 'Duty Manager has gone home'. Further coaxing seemed pointless. No one had taught this girl what to do when 5 customers were dissatisfied. We paid the bill to the exact penny and no more - three of us would have been willing to leave names and addresses - the bill to be settled ONLY AFTER discussion with management, but others did not feel able. The website states: The Parsonage Hotel has worked hard at building a solid reputation for excellent food. I DON’T THINK SO!In the end only because we couldn't face seeking out coffee elsewhere on a Friday afternoon, we were in the countryside [one of us had come from Cheshire, two from Leeds, two from York] we reluctantly decided to take coffee there because we still had so much to talk about. The coffee was as good as I remember - the last 2 times I'd been there had no longer been home made biscuits but shop-bought ones - this time there were no biscuits or mints and the price was 49p more per person than I last remember paying. Had we had a reasonable meal I wouldn’t even have noticed that.
