We booked Christmas meal for 6 on 20th Dec 22. We were given a room to ourselves which was nice , our waiter was good very friendly. The meal was the worst Christmas meal we had. Turkey fine, the vegetables were rock hard and the amount per person was terrible including 3 very hard runner beans , 5 Half Brussel sprouts ( too hard to put the fork in ( even waiter couldn't) and 2 pieces of another veg it appeared that who ever was in the kitchen had taken the portions out of the freezer and hadn't microwaved them long enough. The desserts were passible but not great , then we came to mince pies, pies is not the word ( one bite) we would use they were not much bigger than a fifty pence piece with a spread of filling no bits just a brown gel. The waiter was most apologetic and offered us free drinks but as there was 4 elderly and 2 drivers the drinks were 4 soft drinks and 1 half pint that didn't equal a lot of money. We paid £179.70 for these meals. I realise that the price also includes wages , heating etc but we have had many meals out and this is by far the worst.

Had a nice relaxed meal here this evening. Went for the Salmon and Crab Terrine followed by the Slow-braised Pork Belly - both delicious. My partner had the tomato soup and the Gnocchi which were also lovely. Our server Nick was very friendly and attentive, a real asset to your restaurant.

I went to The Pavilion with a large party of approximately 60, mostly mature people, many with mobility issues. The Pavilion has been the choice for probably the last four or five Christmases. I was greeted at the door by a friendly member of staff, who asked which group I was with and then showed me to the room. I think there were at least two other groups dining at the same time as us. Everything seemed to have been cut back on compared with other years. There were no bread rolls and butter. Portions were small. For example, the cheese and biscuits was one biscuit/oatcake broken into four pieces and two minute sized pieces of cheese. There were only two waiters initially, then a third was drafted in. Some people had long wait times and those who got vegetables in a bowl for the table had finished their main course long before the vegetables arrived. I do not drink ordinary tea, just fruit tea and asked four times for hot water in order to use my teabag. The meal I had, which was a turkey Christmas dinner, was okay, but the veg must have just been introduced to the hot water and were rock hard. Sadly, the Pavilion needs more staff to cater for a large group. The staff that were serving us were fine, but under pressure.

We were staying in the York Pavilion and ate in Langton's Brasserie/Restaurant on four nights - three nights in the restaurant and we had a bar snack on the fourth night. The A La Carte menu was varied offering a choice of dishes and vegetarian options. The food was well cooked and well presented We both had the sirloin steak on one night and it was excellent - actually had some flavour which isn't always the case nowadays. There was a daily specials menu/board which actually did not vary that much but if you are only staying a couple of nights then that would not matter. One thing that did annoy was a charge for "Sides" - put an extra £1 or so on the price of the main course and include the sides - this criticism is directed at all restaurants that do this!!

Time was 3.55, was in a hurry as had a doctors appointment coming up. Asked the guy in reception in the hotel (close to dining area) to please remind me when it got to 4.20 (when I needed to be off). Then ordered a main of salmon with fishcake and cherry tomatoes from the dinner menu. The waiters where very polite helpful and friendly (as was the guy at reception). One of them (the manager?) had an amazing French accent, which seemed to help the atmosphere. The food arrived in a timely manner and honestly it was delicious. Overall the portion wasn't the biggest (although the salmon portion was generous), but it was adequate for my needs and very tasty and well presented. The only thing I will say is the americano I ordered wasn't the best; was it made fresh or did it come off a hotplate? Still; coffee aside, I had just finished my delicious meal when the reception guy informed me politely (and on time!) it was 4.20. I payed and went to my appointment. Atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. I will go again maybe with a book. Although the coffee wasn't perfect, the food and service where very good indeed.

We have just returned from an evening meal. We had a lovely table in the window with a view to a little tree fringed courtyard. The service was friendly and efficient. Our respective choices of lamb shank and sea bass were very good, with very pleasant accompaniments, and we also enjoyed the crème brulee and Queen's pudding we chose for dessert. Prices were about what we expected. I could have done with a wider choice of wines by the glass, but that is my only quibble. We would certainly go there again.

We had hired a car for a trip round Yorkshire starting in Harrogate with the first day a short run to York. We are Best Western fans and use whenever possible. This was a good one!! The meal was excellent as part of a DBB Advance Purchase option; the allowance from what we paid that was credited to the dinner allowed us two Starters and two Mains with a cheese plate to share at the end. Then there was breakfast to come in the morning too. Everything is highly recommended, if you want a great stay in York this restaurant as part of the hotel is the place for you.

This is the restaurant that is in the Best Western Hotel in York. As it is in the Michelin restaurant listing I expected far better. We both had the lamb steak which was very tough and tasteless. It was a shame as this could be a very nice hotel but this meal put us off. We decided not to dine here again and overheard another couple saying the same. Service was very good, which helped somewhat and when we complained when we left the manager handled the situation very well. Nice setting but the food has to improve.

Tried the two courses for £10.00 menu, very little choice. First course pate, cane as a grey lump with three pieces of Melba toast and kumquat jam, no butter and fairly tasteless. Next course my Caesar salad a joke, awful dressing and two pieces of rubber chicken (whole) stuck on top. When complained told the Polish chef didn't know how to prepare a Caesar salad! My wife had the burger, dry on two slices of dry bread and two pieces of lettuce which we assumed were the 'salad' on the menu. Any sides such as chips are £2.50 extra. Service took ages. At least they took price of one meal off the bill. Won't be going back ever, another shining example of Best Western's reputation for sub-standard food.

After sightseeing all day in York we decided, against our better judgement, to ignore the indifferent reviews that the Restaurant had collected and dine in our Hotel. Sadly I have to report that the bad gradings would seem to be justified. The restaurant has a perfect setting. It is in the original Georgian dining room with pleasant views of a formal garden, high ceilings, polished floor, white table cloths etc. And there the good news ends........ the menu was not overly exciting and appeared over priced. I ordered the Brie and Red Cabbage Strudel, not sure why, just seemed a good idea at the time. I guess I visualised Creamy Brie and Cabbage sauted, in wine, layered with Filo pastry gently baked in the oven. I did not expect it to be deep fried. Leaving it over long in the fryer didnt help. To add insult to injury my wife's chicken breast was dry and tasteless. The restaurant supervisor was a charming and very helpful girl who confided that it was her first day on the job. When I mentioned the strudel, she confessed she didnt know what a strudel was but unprompted provided us with complimentary desserts. A memorable meal but for the wrong reasons......would not eat there again.

Wanting to eat early on a Friday evening I ventured into the Pavillions Hotel York to eat in Langtons Brasserie. The website said that the restaurant did not open till 6.30 but the brasserie was open from 12 lunchtime to 10pm, On arrival the receptionist and the Head Waiter did not seem to appreciate this with both of them telling me that service did not start till 6.30pm. When I pointed then towards the wording of the website they did apologise and went to see what chef could do for us! As it was Chef was accommodating and said everything was available. I was expecting a little more from the food which turned out to be 'pub grub' for want of a better description. Very cheerful but not cheap.

What we got was kids with no training food with no taste it was almost like you had got a class from the local high school to run the whole resteraunt and no one had a clue, we actually felt sorry for the staff as they clearly had no training. Gone off hard bread rolls were dropped on your plate, when I asked for another drink my wife was asked "you alright" which was I figure there way of asking if she would like another drink. For entertainment purposes it's worth a visit but once you have been you will not be returning.

Food was what I would expect for a very cheap pub lunch cooked by someone who doesn't know what they are doing in the kitchen. Service from one of the male staff was so overly attentive it was positively creepy & inappropriate. Our negative feedback was not dealt with well - no, of course we didn't want more of the yellowing soft vegetables nor the packet stuffing! Very disappointing & will not visit again. A great shame, so I hope the owners take a closer look and make some changes.

This place used to be just round the corner from my house, so one evening when my parents were over, we thought we'd try it out. It wasn't worth our time. The waitress was initially friendly, but as soon as I had queries about the food, her demeanor became surly and she was very cold.I dined with both my parents (B&C). B ordered pork main, and C ordered fish, I opted for a salt cod scotch egg with leek and potato mash, which in principle I thought sounded very nice, we also ordered some french fries which came with aioli. The pork was average, so was the fish, the complaints that arose were with my dish and the aioli. To start there was no aioli with the chips, so I prompted the waitress "do these not come with a garlic mayonaise?" to which she went and checked the menu and came back and said "they come with aioli", my response being, yes, we would like some then. When it showed up, it was completely split, something even a semi competent chef should be able to avoid, or if they can't do it, then they shouldn't have sent it to the table. My dish itself looked alright on the plate, the presentaion wasn't bad at all. But once I tasted it, eurgh. It was the saltiest thing ever. The cod had balatantly not been soaked before it was used, something which is essential with salt cod, and it came in a huge quantity. I literally couldn't eat any more than a few bites. I ate the small piece of smoked fish that came with it, and pushed it aside, it was totally inedible.I told the waitress it wasn't right, but she was being totally unhelpful and my parents were in a rush. B paid and we left, I would suggest if anyone stays at the hotel, do NOT bother going here to eat unless you have no tastebuds.Final comment, for what it is, it is also very expensive.

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
