Lakeside Cafe in North Somerset

Possibly the worst fish and chips I've ever had. It tasted like the Lidl essential version. The chips were overcooked and tasted like they were originally cooked a while ago and left in oil. The fish was dry, like it had been defrosted for a while. The batter fell straight off the fish, which was not crispy. We were very disappointed.

I am shocked to see that this place only has 3 stars. It isn't fine dining, but then they don't advertise to be! The food was really good and coffee was nice. Chips were very good and that definitely isn't the case everywhere. Evie went above and beyond to help - she is an asset to the cafe. Free parking directly next to the cafe and lovely surroundings.

We have been here before and were very pleased to return for our morning coffee. We also had some refreshments with the coffee which were excellent. We particularly liked the friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Many 'locals' came in while we were there and they were all greeted by their name. We will be returning for lunch next time we are in the region.

Friendly staff Great coffee No toilets is a downfall

Only got a coffee but it was fine, took a while to be served even though only 1 person before me. Cafe is a bit old and dated

Really nice fish and chips at a decent price

My husband and I had lunch here today . The fish and chips were delicious as was the burger cooked fresh to order and a very generous portion for the price . The cafe was very clean and well presented with lots of choice . The staff were very friendly and helpful there was a new girl on her first day serving at the till and she did amazing . Thank you to Emma and her team . We will definitely be back . Highly recommend a visit here .

The food was good, place could do with a revamp.

Today four of us went here for lunch, we all had fish and chips which were very very good. The lady who served us from very friendly and efficient, nothing too much trouble. Thank you, we will come again.

A pleasant stop on the Portishead sea-front road, with plenty of nearby FREE parking (at the time of posting this). Nice selection of drinks and cakes, with chairs and tables inside and outside with a sea view.

First time visiting again this year owner very unfriendly Icecreams so small and very expensive Magnums £3.50 Mr whippy icecreams so small and expensive and carte dor over £3 for the smallest scoop ever and in the cheapest cone not even a waffle cone , place is grubby and just smells of horrible used chip fat All the food is way overpriced Will be buying food elsewhere and taking it to lake grounds, she never gives receipts either ☹️

Lovely chips and very prompt service . Would recommend for a meal and you then sit in the park or around the lake.

We decided to have a quick bite to eat at the Lakeside Cafe in the Lake Grounds, Portishead and enjoyed the experience. The food was cooked to order and piping hot. And the lady who served us was super friendly and helpful. Large windows ensured the cafe was bright and airy with good views of the surrounding parkland. Although there are no customer toilets on the premises, public loos are just outside. Extensive and handy free parking directly outside was a bonus.

Our first time visiting Portishead we really enjoyed our day parking was easy and close to the beach Public toilets are nearby but do require a 20p coin for access Mostly flatwalks and appeared dog friendly Lunch of fish and chips was reasonably priced and well cooked Staff were really friendly

Well for one, they didn't have icecream, machine not working, so for the first hot day of year, not good. 😉

Manager was incredibly helpful with a food allergy and checked all the packets and ingredients with me. I was very grateful that my child could eat with her friend, I'll be coming again. Food was also very tasty 😄😄

Called here in April 2024 after doing the coast path from Clevedon to Portishead on a wet day - great portion of chips and they were cooked to order and fresh and thus hot - cup of tea - all disposable plates and cups - been passed but thought I would call in

Thursday i went to the lakeside cafe with my wife and kids and the two girls that were working were so kind and really helpful. The place was very clean as a blonde girl was cleaning she was very chatty and polite to my children i would reccomend.Get those girls a promotion

Chips very dry and not hot. Fish batter was soooo crispy, hard, dried up, lots of bones in the fish which was very dry. Sadly looked and tasted as if it was yersdays wamed up. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Ĵ

Cozy snack bar near the beach, a destination for families. Nice staff and good price-performance ratio.

Very hard working and polite young members of staff. Unfortunately the food is vile. The fish was supposedly cod but was cooked to oblivion. Probably just as well as it was riddled with worms. Yuk.

I don't normally write reviews: horrid coffee; horrid hot chocolate; over priced ice cream that was horrible and service was unfriendly. Place is run down and the kids toys were dangerous: see pics...smashed lights with broken glass and electrical plug hanging out of the window left in the rain. It's a shame this place has no competition out on the sea front so it has to up its game.

Came for some lunch after a walk. Staff were friendly and it was good priced. My only criticism is no recycling. Our food and drink came out in cardboard and then into the bin. Why is there no recycling bin? Or use a sink and wash up plates and mugs? It's also very outdated. Needs a lick of paint and new furniture.

We thought we’d try the cafe as looked like under new ownership. We waited a few minutes to be served, the chef saw us and had to attract attention (Emma and young girl chatting behind desk and not aware we were waiting). Asked for decaf cap and regular cappuccino, Emma asked Dylan to do this but then no one mentioned the cappuccino so we had to ask for that - Dylan’s response was “no one told me to make one”. It was made within seconds but then turned out not to be a cappuccino (probably another instant coffee). My boyfriend went back to ask for a cappuccino please and said it was a little chaotic this morning, lightly and politely. Emma who seems to be the manager, took offence to this and said that was rude, the conversation ended with my boyfriend saying we wouldn’t be back and her response was we don’t want customers like you. I take that to mean they don’t want customers who’d like to be served quickly, politely, with decent coffee and customer service. So if that’s what you’re after - I wouldn’t shop here. Lido cafe all the way!

I cant say enough wonderful things about this cafe and its owner. Both myself and my mother went for lunch today and were treated like family, such a warm welcome and impeccable service. Then when our food came out what a delight we had a simple bacon roll but no expense had been spared the roll was beautiful and the bacon thick and cooked to perfection we will definitely be going back. Such a shame that while we were there the owner had a customer from hell who made his obnoxious presence very well known and all I can say is she handled this man with the upmost of respect. I definitely would not have. Lovely place lovely lady.

Lovely breakfast bap so nice we stayed for lunch. They also have massive muffins for only 2.60. Great value food. Quick service, friendly staff. I'll deffo be back next time I'm in Town.

Great beachside cafe, lovely service and great chips - made to order and not greasy. The owner went out of her way to find some extra ketchup packets when they’d run out and came running after us to give them to us.

Went in for hot drinks and bowl of chips which was very good for the price . Staff polite and friendly . Could do with a few more chairs .

Easy to find plenty of car parking always busy

Excellent fish and chips, well cooked with lovely crispy batter. Reasonable price by todays prices. Staff were attentive and friendly. Throughly enjoyable and recommended.

Such a beautiful place to go with friends, went there to grab some food and a coffee from the cafe. Staff were lovely, and the lad made an excellent coffee i have to say, food was delicious and farely priced for what we got, can go to other places and it will be ridiculously priced so well done to the cafe team. Then thought we would go to the swan boats and had a lovely time there too enjoying the view. Overall a great cafe, lots to do and would be perfect for parents and children as there is a park and fair ground rides.

Decent coffee, however, cafe seems to need overhauling, and staff retrained, young lad on counter seemed very disinterested, couldnt even show any politeness, and was very evident he didnt want to be there, I felt Like an inconvenience.

Only had an ice cream, so can't really comment on the food. Had a Mr Wippy, but due to a botched delivery, they didn't have any flakes. Nice setting, restaurant looked clean. Set in a lovely park with playground and model boating lake. Lots of wildfowl, including Ducks, Canadian geese and Swans. Lots of free parking right nearby.

No toilets,serving food and drink but no toilet facilities or hand washing facilities.

Coffee grinder needs to be adjusted or something as I could see espresso shots pouring out at under ten seconds and then being served, put me off getting one. Staff were friendly though.

A pregnant lady was ashamed in the middle of the caffe for asking it there was a chair available by the female member of the staff and then made to stand and drink coffee while everyone was looking at her. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing, poor lady. Awful service. Do not go there.

Seemed nice from the outside but not open. Google suggested open until 5pm, so brought elderly person for fish and chip dinner, but cafe shut with no notice. Disappointing.

We took our dog for a walk and decided to sit by the cafe for a break and some food. Firstly, the owners were extremely friendly, helpful and kind. On arrival we were greeted by a young gentleman, although quiet at first, he was extremely helpful and polite. Nothing I asked was too much trouble. They have ramp access for wheel chairs, bowls of water for dogs and toilets situated a couple of metres behind the cafe. Our chips and coffee were lovely. There were many syrups to choose from in my coffee, which was lovely. We chose to sit outside with our dog, the owner brought us our food. We had such a wonderful chat and we appreciated the conversation. The atmosphere was lovely but quiet, it is a lot more noisier during peak times. It can get quite busy too, so it is just to be mindful of this to avoid disappointment in the seating areas. New ramps area for keen skaters and a wonderful play area for children. There is a boating lake nearby and children's rides, used in summer weather only. The lake grounds in general are a great day out, with areas for blankets, picnics and gazebos for small get togethers. Great for dog walkers too. There are benches along the promenade for sitting and watching the boats come in and out. The cafe has a great selection of food and drink overall and is a great place to meet friends. Don't believe it, why not see for yourself, it doesn't disappoint. Beautiful scenery, wonderful service and a great place to visit.

Breakfast bap was nice. Coffee was a bit weak but froffy milk on top tasted great. Worth a visit. I was a bit too early (10am) to try the fish and chips Great location right by the beach front and lake Toilets are the public toilets block next door and cost 20p to enter.

Have eaten here several times, the food has always been lovely. Can only speak as we find. The staff very polite.

Had a snack and coffee there yesterday service was good food was good but the coffee was awful. More like hot water. Will go there again but settle for a cold drink or cup of tea.

Just visited this cafe as we went for a lovey walk around Portishead, the place was filthy, there was more dirt on the floor than outside, the coffee machine was not being wiped down, the tables were all broke and wobbling and on our table we had a piece of wood that had broken off the table, the tables were all filthy, how food can be served in here I will never know. never been to such a dirty place in my life, needs a complete overhaul,

Food was ok, the hot drink we ordered was pretty unpleasant, pretty tasteless. Cafe was also really messy so we didn’t want to eat in. Loads of really dirty tables and floor had food on it, looked like it hasn’t been washed in a few days. It was pretty empty of people so no excuse for that much dirt.

Lunched here today (18 November 2022). Very friendly service, food freshly cooked with excellent batter around the fish. A most enjoyable experience. Will eat at the Lakeside Cafe again. Well done.

Very poor cafe. Coffee was horrible. This place needs a serious refurbishment. The cafe is in a great location with a captive market. There are usually loads of people around most of whom probably don’t use the cafe because of the state it is in. It would be much more popular if it was more welcoming and the product was better.

Stopped here for the first time and had lunch. The food was excellent and the equally so, the service. Will stop again next time we are in the area.

Absolutely terrible, run by kids who don’t have any manners, are walking round on their phones rather than cleaning the dirty tables. Received someone else’s order and the waitress left us to explain to this other table why we had received their order…absolute joke. Place is dirty and overpriced, probably long overdue a visit from the food and hygiene services.

Pretty bland cafe, just like the tea I had because they didn’t have any non dairy alternatives. They seriously need a 21st century update. If it wasn’t for keeping my parents happy I would have gone somewhere else. I personally won’t be returning.

Friendly staff, but the place is a bit tired and a mess

Me and my boyfriend both had the fish and chips, both of us ill that night. Stomach cramps started as soon as we were on the bus back to bristol!

Underwhelming fish & chips and unhygienic establishment. Had my head over the toilet with food poisoning a few hours later. You've been warned.

Queues because loads of people returning coffee - server blamed it on the ‘crap’ machine. Overcharged £5 on a £12 bill. No slushy for our 5 year old because machine not working although it was going around. No sandwiches available and indeed the coffee tasted poor. Moderately busy Sunday but plenty of tables available so not unexpectedly so. I can only imagine that people have been here before and do not want to waste their money

Enjoyed a rest whilst taking my dog out for a lovely beach and battery point walk. Had a cappuccino and Eccles cake, water available for my dog lovely staff. Nice little respite before walking back.

Run down, dirty and tired. The food is cheap quality, they sell Costco cakes for extortionate prices. £8.50 for a toasted cheese and ham toastie. The owners are just greedy they overcharge everything including the rides

Very busy appeared to be only two members of staff working on the tills so the queue was never ending, they had sold out of lots of the options but the staff remained polite and worked as fast as they could...

Last time we came we had food served on a plate cutlery This time a lot of things not on the menu and food served in a take away containers plastic fork not great but food was freshly cooked And hot suppose a lot down to covid just a bit disappointed

Stopped off for a coffee whilst walking along the front ...coffee ok ...but would prefer it served in a proper mug ...poor choice of cakes , just pre wrapped ones which weren't very appealing, could do with keeping an eye on cleaning as spotted dead flies on the windowsill ...no toilet facilities either ...

Umed and ared weather to go in and glad we did, fair priced fish and chips ... very nice, not greasy and a lovely cup of tea with No chlorine taste I normally seem to find. Friendly enough. (Room for improvement... yes, the cafe looks very tired and get rid of the arcade things in my view and wobbly tables)

Wasn't sure whether to go here as outside looks a little run down BUT The fish and chips were lovely, freshly cooked and non greasy which is very unusual for a fish & chip shop. The tea was great too

It's really a take-out establishment. We enjoyed the toasted teacake but they haven't got toilets in the cafe (although the public ones are just next door. Also it was cold inside but we'll ventilated.

Always reasonable priced seaside food. Great for all the family.

I had a very good day here the food in the cafe is very good not greasy and not too hot but mot cold either. Very nice view from the seaside lath and nice to come down from the lido down for some chips. Only improvements would be maybe some goal nets as there is a lot of space on the grass area but very nice location for a day out and £1 duck food is available in the cafe.

Not really the friendliest place but on the day it was raining and that does make people miserable the only happy ones there that day where the ducks in the lake

Ordered sausage and chips and a ham/ cheese toastie. Young lad served us our food, asked him for forks. He collected two forks and dropped them. He picked them up and placed them on our table and walked off!! Disgusting!! Basic food hygiene not acknowledge!...
