Lainey’s has been open about a month and has already become a favourite with us (and, judging by the footfall when we are there) with many other locals. Unlike many such new establishments it is obvious that the owner has a previously wide experience in catering. She offers a great basic menu but is willing to make adjustments to cater for a variety of diets (and even fussy, vegan foodies such as ourselves!). She is always cheerful and welcoming and has obviously become a firm favourite with the local businesses nearby, because lots appear to buy take-always from her. Her establishment offers a cosy, bright little place for those wanting a nice place to sit, people-watch, chat with friends or read a book while enjoying her tasty delights. Alternatively, in warmer weather, you can buy a takeaway and go sit by the harbour on one of the many benches positioned with views of the Abbey. All the popular basics are on offer: soups, filled jacket potatoes, BBQ chicken wrap Bacon bun, Sausage pasta, Potato skins, sandwiches etc. but she will also cater for Vegans with home-made hummus, beans etc. Gluten-free is also an option. Her coffee has now been deemed by us as the best in Whitby (and we are very fussy re coffee). It is also very well-priced. She obviously keeps her machine well-cleaned, because the coffee is always good. Most places vary (unclean machines!). A variety of teas are also available. She offers a host of delicious cakes (some gluten-free/vegan etc) to accompany coffee/tea. Home-made jam graces some of the cakes. I hesitated about actually posting this review because it will probably mean we won’t be able to get a seat as soon as others find it via this website; but Lainey (presuming that is the owner’s name) deserves success, so here it is. Her pricing offers unbeatable value in otherwise expensive Whitby. I recommend without qualification!

Great cafe - great staff and comfortable, tasteful ambience. The food is good and I’d definitely recommend the pancake stack.

Second time having breakfast at The Pines for me, third for my mum and brother with whom I come on holiday to lovely Filey. I can see how the local older folk love this little cafe but you don't have to be old to appreciate its charm or indeed a good, reasonably priced English breakfast. Malcolm is a great host with his cheeky banter!

We accidently discovered this cafe while hunting around Whitby for something more "homely". The staff were very accommodating for our party of 7. They ensured we got seated and looked after us all the step of the way. The food was plentiful, tasty, and very reasonably priced. There was a good selection that suited both adults and children. If you want to avoid the mass of marauding tourists and seaguls. Take a stroll up the hill to Stokers.

We stumbled across this place whilst wandering around the old town. It’s near the swing bridge on Grape Street Small menu so we tried most of it - everything we had was great. Loved the kimchi dumplings and the sushi. The bowl of delight which I forget the name of was delicious as was the sweet chilli chicken. All freshly cooked and tasty! We will return to try what we missed!! It was very reasonably priced, friendly service and can’t recommend enough.

What a lovely little cafe. The best bacon sandwich I've had. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.
