Wonderful historic sailing boat with very friendly crew & informative captain giving us interesting facts about the boat & the river as we were sailing but with plenty of silence in between so we could relax & take in the beautiful scenery in peaceful contemplation! The lunch was delicious & good quality with wine & soft drinks . I totally recommend this 3 hour round trip to enjoy the beautiful Suffolk countryside on the river . Big thank you to the crew & I look forward to our next river cruise with you in the future

It just wasn’t our day. We had been looking forward to a breakfast. It took an hour or so to get there, so we were hungry. Strangely, I could not smell bacon or sausage frying. That’s because it is not cooked on board, but cooked elsewhere. We are not keen on packet orange juice so did not have that. The breakfast was certainly one of the worst we have ever had. It was lukewarm, mainly because it was brought to the boat ( the owner does not deny this). The toast tasted like it had been made hours before. We had brought our own mint tea but it was never mentioned they had herbal teas. If you like fried egg cold, then that’s what you get. We wrapped the cold cheap sausage and some kind of ham/bacon in our napkin. Owner tried to say we had eaten the breakfast so now we are liars. I gave a sausage to my dog but he wouldn’t eat it. Apple pie, cream and muffins for after breakfast! I could give you a great recipe for decent muffins. We declined both. So, no breakfast, our own tea bag, £40 each. To top it all, no PA on stern so we heard nothing. You can’t get twelve people on the bow. We gave the owner a chance to show a gesture and refund at least the horrible breakfast by email. We suggested, as many of our friends did, that they serve croissants, fruit and cheese. Easier, less staff and far nicer. The owner said typically how everyone else enjoyed the breakfast. That’s just to make you feel bad. No refund, all excuses. So very, very disappointed. Should have stayed by the Broads where we live and had a lovely cruise as we have experienced before. Never ever again on LF, and it’s really bad PR to give excuses to customers or call them liars. We did not eat the food and we did not hear anyone else say they enjoyed it either.

What more wonderful a way to spend a few hours than skimming along the river Alde. Heading out to the Quattro-foil Martello Tower at Aldeburgh, before settling down to a fabulous lunch, all cooked onboard by Chief “Cook” Sharon and her Bottle- washer, Jo. Attending to everyone’s culinary and beverage need this pair are slick with their teamwork in such a small amount of galley space. Our Skipper, Olly guided us gently along the waters with an accompanying dialogue to our surroundings; his safety briefing is pretty witty too! A fabulous time with fabulous weather to boot; can’t wait to join you again for a breakfast cruise along the Orwell.

This was a a lovely little adventure undertaken whilst on holiday in Ordford. We set sail from Orford Quay to Aldeburgh and then ate our meal en route back. We then continued around Havergate island where see saw a good variety of wildlife. The food on board was good. I’d recommend the pate starter from Pinney’s! We also had a burger each was tasty. The skipper was polite and welcoming, as were all of the staff. There was a good selection of drinks on board; we shared a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and a Aperol Spritz. Well worth the money if you’re down here.

An anniversary treat trip for breakfast on a boat and it was brilliant. 4 of us, 8 other strangers and over a delicious breakfast we made friends. The food was wonderful, and plentiful. The boat crew were great, so friendly and helpful. The weather was typical for April, windy and wet but in the cabin it was toasty warm as the wood burner blazed away. A really lovely way to start a Sunday. Highly recommend this trip.

We had a lovely cruise up and down the Ore and Alde on Lady Florence. The crew were great, and the boat was great. Our food felt a little bit lacking though. Suffolk Pie (Chicken, Ham and Stuffing) served with potatoes, a garden salad, and brown sauce. Quite an odd combination, would’ve loved some gravy.

We have lived in Suffolk for thirty years and always meant to take this trip. It’s certainly not just for tourists , but a fascinating insight into life on the river, its wildlife and history., even if like is you already know and love the area. The breakfast cruise means you are chugging gently along in this lovely old boat when everything else is quiet, and you can really appreciate the beauty of the unspoilt Havergate Island and the Ness (even more fascinating and eerie when seen from the water ). The cosy cabin breakfast was really tasty and hearty, plenty of food and drink, and the finishing touch of apple pie and muffins with cream on the deck was delicious and really set us up for the day. Olly and Sharon were friendly hosts , and offered an interesting but not intrusive commentary over the two hour trip, pointing out seals, marsh harriers and egrets. Highly recommended and we will be telling all our local friends to try being a tourist for a day and take a trip on the Lady Florence !

I reckon that this is all about the cruise, and the food and the shelter, if it rains, are added bonuses. It's just not fair to compare the eating experience to a meal in an ordinary restaurant. The cruise, upstream as far as the yacht club at Aldeburgh and downstream as far as the downstream end of Havergate Island takes you past some lovely views of the estuary you can only really enjoy from a boat - we saw several types of seabirds including oystercatchers and avocets and even saw a seal. The skipper gives a knowledgable commentary from time to time but not so much as to be irritating, as often happens. The food, given that it is prepared, of course, in a tiny galley, is not at all bad. It's not haute cuisine but is certainly very edible and it is fun to sit round the table and chat to the other passengers during the meal. Before and after the meal one can wander round the decks. I can imagine that if the boat is full it could be a little cramped, but there were only 7 passengers when we went and that was fine. The crew doing the cooking and serving were efficient and pleasant. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the trip as a whole experience. Go on - you'll enjoy it!

A lovely sail up and down the river from Orford spoiled by 1960’s style cooking - reminded me of school dinners. Vegetables boiled to death and inedible, tasteless pre-packaged fish and sauce - but good local potatoes. To be fair, puddings were high on flavour, in that sparkly way of modified products.I suppose you shouldn’t expect anything else from a limited galley kitchen. Just not what you want at 4.30 on a sunny afternoon crushed indoors while all the scenery just passes you by.

We paid £47.00 per couple for the trip and then food and drink costs were on top. Our total bill was £123.00. We both had a main and desert plus a couple of sandys each. Very expensive. The Covid 19 advice on the Lady Florence website states that there are hand sanitiser points on the boat, I didn’t see any, nor was I prompted to use one. It also states on the website that all passengers will have their temperature taken. There was no sign of a thermometer. We were all asked if we had any covid symptoms or had been in contact with anyone with covid, and we were all asked if we’d had the two jabs, but weren’t asked for proof when the answer from everyone was yes. There were five couples dining around one table in a small cabin. The door to the deck was left open otherwise there was no ventilation. I didn’t see the dining area until half an hour into the trip and so unless I’d eaten on a windy deck, which in retrospect I think I should have done, I had no choice but to sit with eight complete strangers. The trip lasted three hours. The two stewards wore masks. The commentary by the skipper was brilliant. The food and service was excellent. The attitude we were encouraged to take about covid once we were aboard was to feel that we were all capable of being “sensible”. I’m sure the virus is happy to take advantage of this view.

Went on here with the family on a beautiful sunny evening to enjoy a leisurely cruise and dinner and upon boarding the crew were very friendly and welcoming.Shortly after boarding we set off along the river and drinks were swiftly served followed by dinner a while later. There are apparently room for 12 guests to dine and my opinion that would be a most unpleasant experience and a real squeeze even if you all had figures like Twiggy, ten of us were practically elbow to elbow with limited space as it was.The service for food and drink was pretty good throughout our time on board and the meal was okay but I thought it over the top to be charged a £5 supplement over and above the cost of the meal for beef kebabs when I doubt if there was even £5 worth of beef on them. The thing that shocked me the most was being charged £27 for a mere bottle of plonk and felt this an absolute rip off as this is not a city restaurant and merely a very basic wooden boat devoid of any finery.Just my opinion of personal experience but each to their own.

The food was okay, with a good selection and generous portions. The decor was dated, but clean and made good use of the space. The main issue we had was with the staff. The skipper was definitely knowledgeable and friendly - giving advice, direction and great local information. However, the ‘host’ completely lacked any customer service skills. She was abrupt, blunt and did not offer any pleasantries- making us feel like a burden. The first thing she did was ask about payment, in a brusque manner and was not supportive with the fact that there had been some confusion when booking regarding the payment. She rushed through the choices, stating rather rudely what was available and what wasn’t- a more professional manner would be to avoid explaining the issues and simply announcing what was available politely. The space was relatively cramped for our party, and the bench needed to be extended to allow for another seat - she did not help in this process, simply told us we needed to do it - it was not a simple matter. Overall, she gave an air of being not welcoming and wanting to get it over and done with. The other member of staff supporting with the food prep and service was polite and friendly. Overall, the skipper was great, the other member of staff was friendly and unfortunately the ‘host’ frequently made the process unpleasant and awkward. We would not book again.

Booked a trip on the Lady Florence for my birthday. Wasn't sure if it would go ahead as there were still just 4 people booked from a capacity of 12 on the evening before but we turned up and others had booked in at the last moment, so a near full house made for a good trip. Small boat which runs from the quay in Orford, with breakfast, lunch or dinner time sittings. We opted for the dinner time one, which left at 3.30 on the day we were there (time of year and tide dependent, I believe). The boat takes a trip up river to Aldeburgh, with commentary at appropriate points and then the bell is rung to signify dinner served in the downstairs sitting room. Good time to get to know the rest of the guests, as 12 around the table is quite cosy! Good choices of starters, mains and deserts plus a good selection of drinks. We had a perfect day for it - sunny and calm, with just a slight cooling breeze once the boat turned into the breeze. Turned round at Aldeburgh and headed back down past Orford, right to the mouth of the Ore, where the Orford Ness spit ends and the sea opens up, turning back again and travelling back to Orford on the other side of Havergate Island. Great way to experience the river, enjoy the birdlife, enjoy the food and have a bit of banter with others who had joined us for the trip that day. You are likely to see lots of birds along the shoreline and (like us) see a seal pop up and say hello! Lovely!

From an inauspicious start, high winds generating particularly choppy water and more than a little trepidation, our evening aboard the Lady Florence went from strength to strength. Our skipper for the trip, whose name I didn't catch, maintained a witty and knowledgeable commentary, audible to both bow and stern which, as a local, I found fascinating. Food orders were taken as we headed upstream to Aldeburgh and we took our seats for the return, this time to the seaward side of RSPB Havergate Island. The tiny galley produced great quality food, which was both hot and enjoyable, before the boat turned about close to Shingle Street in order to head back to Orford Quay. I had no idea the rivers Alde and Ore were so interesting.

We can only praise every aspect of this 3-hour lunch cruise. We were greeted by a very friendly and competent crew and soon felt part of the group of 12 passengers who all enjoyed everything to the full. The commentary was excellent - informative, clear and not too much information. The lunch exceeded our expectations - we thought it was fairly expensive at first but was worth every penny and there was an excellent choice of dishes, all most beautifully prepared and presented. We are looking forward to our next trip on the Lady Florence already.

During our holiday we had a fabulous boat trip on the Lady Florence and an excellent meal. By the end of the trip 12 passengers were chatting like long time friends having shared an amazing meal together. The staff on the boat were friendly and very helpful. A commentary ftom the skipper also kept us in touch with all there was to see. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.

This was our third trip on the Lady Florence and it still is a real treat. There is an excellent choice of starters, main meal and deserts. I can recommend the smoked duck as a starter and the smoked trout as a main meal. The main meal is served with new potatoes, salad and tomatoes all cooked freshly It is really cosy and you get to chat with the other guests. Today there were 10 of us, the maximum is 12. As we sipped our glasses of wine/cider we sailed through the calm waters of the rivers as places of interest were pointed out. The commentary was excellentWe spotted eigrets, kestrels, Canada and grey legged geese, avocets, oyster catchers, little terns and marsh harriers, As we reached Aldeburgh lunch was ready to be served as we turned round and sailed back passed Orford towards Halvergate Island (RSPB) I certainly recommend this trip if you are visiting the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Excellent in every way,

We have been fortunate enough to have been on the Lady Florence many times with various friends & family either for brunch, lunch and dinner in all kinds of weather and it has never failed to be a good experience. The last time was just before Easter with friends who wanted to do the trip and were very pleasantly surprised at both the friendliness and efficiency of the crew and the quality of the lunch which we all enjoyed, plus the amazing commentary by Captain John who made the trip the most interesting we'd experienced with his vast knowledge about the local area and its history. We saw seals basking on the mud flats and a number of different species of birds all pointed out by John and learnt some interesting facts about Orford and its environs. A trip we would thoroughly recommend!

An excellent lunch cruise on the Lady Florence for my dad's 80th birthday. We were very lucky with the weather for October. The skipper gave an interesting and tailored commentary, and was most apologetic when we got stuck on a sandbank at the river mouth. We didn't mind - it gave us an extra hour on the boat watching birds and seals whilst waiting for the tide to come in and lift us off. The galley staff coped admirably with our various dietary requirements and produced wonderful food. Everybody was very helpful and friendly from Craig who dealt with the booking to the crew on the day.

Visited on 29th August. Fair stood the wind for Orford (with apologies to H. E. Bates!) when we joined the crew for a lunchtime cruise. A little late getting aboard during light rain. Not the best of starts. However, thanks to Maddie, Kelly & Captain John this proved to be a surprisingly pleasurable experience, floating past famous sights, both historic and current. I must confess to getting seasick in the bath, but thankfully it was a very calm day.

Regrettably a celebratory cruise was long scheduled on a typically rain drenched Bank Holiday Sunday. However the elements were unable to dampen a wonderful evening of great food and drink hosted by a most engaging skipper ably supported by his cabin crew. The inside cabin was perfect for the party of twelve and a most enjoyable time was had by all. If the weather had been clement there is plenty to see and absorb in this historic part of the world. Thoroughly recommended!

Last day of our holiday and stopped off to have a look around Orford and the quay. We picked up a leaflet for the Lady Florence River Cruise Restaurant gave them a call and were lucky enough they could fit us in for the evening cruise. What a lovely way to end our holiday. There was a no show for 2 couples so there were only 7 of us which actually turned out for the better as I do feel the table would have been cramped had there been 11. That said, it was a very enjoyable 3 hours with easy comfortable conversation and the staff were all friendly. The food was very tasty and we were extremely impressed by the preparation and service we received from 2 lovely young men aged 17 which I have to say was no mean feat seeing the small kitchen area they were working from!! They were full of charm an humour and a credit to themselves - well done. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Four of us went on the lunch cruise and had a great time. Zach's fun & friendly welcome and service throughout the trip made for a very enjoyable time. How the team cook to order fresh, delicious food for a large group of people in such a tiny kitchen is a miracle! Baked salmon and lasagne went down well, but the winner had to be the Suffolk Country pie! A good selection of drinks and wine was available. Twelve people eating around a communal table was bit of a squeeze, however this wasn't an issue and made for a very sociable time. We were very lucky that the other people on the trip were great company and it felt more like dinner with friends! The commentary on the trip was interesting and the views amazing. Take binoculars to get a good look at the bird life and views. We're looking forward to going back and trying the other cruises.

We went on the boat for a meal on our very first Wedding Anniversary, and now once again on our 25th Anniversary. The experience is amazing, a must for anybody visiting Orford. The boat trip is excellent. We went for the afternoon lunch so was on the boat from 12-3 around 3 hours in total, and whilst on board we had a lovely meal and drinks served by 2 lovely friendly crew members who looked after us excellent. The boat holds 12 people at a time, and while you are cruising the captain is giving you a talk about what you are passing and the local history of Orford. The whole experience is not to be missed and although we have gone back after 25 years, it just goes to show they must be doing something right because they are still in business and doing just as good a job as they were doing all them years ago. Sitting down with 10 other strangers around a table on board all enjoying a lovely meal and boat trip was just as pleasant. Don't just take my word for this excellent day out, go try it for yourselves and see what a lovely experience you can have.

Twelve of us celebrated my father in law's birthday with the 3 hour cruise well described by previous reviewers. Staff were friendly, and the meal was well prepared and tasty. The fresh bread was outstanding. I had smoked mackerel and vegetarian lasagna, the Suffolk Pie, Curried Chicken, trout, in fact all other dishes were well received. A nice touch is they bring potatoes, salad, and another side dish in large bowls for the center of the table. There is also a wide selection of sauces on the table. The Cotes de Rhone red wine was mediocre, I recommend spending a few quid more for the Rioja reserva, which was tasty. Be sure to have layers of clothing, it can be cold on the river, even in summer, especially if you are facing into the wind. The loo is good but is accessed via a steep ladder/stairs, so mobility and balance are helpful. We appreciated them serving a birthday cake we brought on board.

Authentic Pie, Mash n' liquor in Felixstowe - I popped in here after a couple of beers on the front - lovely pies, good old mash and proper liquor - knife, fork and spoon for the liquor, with vinegar, just like in London SE1 - interesting photos of England football stars and a bit of banter with the owner. If you want smashed avocado on sourdough with pea shoots and other unnecessary greenery then this cafe is not for you. But if you want the best quality full English, fresh unfussy honestly presented British and local food then you’re in the right place. Always a warm welcome, seriously tasty local food, simply cooked and unpretentiously presented. Today’s special were some seriously big juicy scallops which I had with my full English and they were an inspired combination and very popular. Thanks Sean for another outstanding breakfast. Keeping consistent standards like this is a real labour of love but it shines through in the food. Lovely breakfast and not an avocado in sight. PS a ‘greasy spoon’ this is not!
