This is now actually called the Alde Cafe. I’ve been twice in the last three days. There are fancier places along the High Street, but you will not get a better meal there than you will find at the Alde. Sean is a brilliant cook who prepares every dish with both flare and a respect for tradition. It was the best fry up I have had in the last twenty years, and a welcomed alternative to the recent tendency of serving them up in thali dishes, with about a tablespoon of beans in one and a cubic centimeter of toast in another. I just had the kedgeree, which was magnificently prepared with haddock from the smokehouses along the Shingle. There are many reasons to come to ever-beautiful Aldeburgh. But I’d rank breakfast or lunch at the Alde Cafe at the very top of my list.

Omg where to begin - this place is an absolute must for anyone visiting Aldeburgh - the full English was simply the best I’ve ever had. The staff are super friendly and the owner Sean is a talented and knowledgeable chef - simple but perfectly executed menu, great relaxed atmosphere. This is a hidden gem - try it you will not be disappointed!

We ate brunch at this cafe twice whilst on holiday in Aldeburgh. The new staff who recently took over are extremely friendly and helpful. The food and the coffee are great. We loved the 50s relaxed vibe here and it was a bonus to be able to park right outside for the family members with limited mobility. Our dog was also welcomed and we ordered him a sausage which was presenting in true "chefy" style :) Thank you!

Our quest to find the perfect cream tea brought us to Aldeburgh cafe to savour the Suffolk cream tea. As connoisseurs of scones, we had high hopes... and we were not disappointed. Savoury scones with a light and fluffy cream cheese spread, topped with a piquant tomato relish, and perfectly baked sweet scones bursting with fruit, and a light whipped cream and strawberry conserve as a crowning glory.

We were desperate for some lunch and stumbled upon this cafe. What a find. Lovely safe outdoor seating. Open 10-2. We quickly ordered a pot of tea and I had 2 toasts with eggs (poached) and beans. The eggs were fresh and golden yellow. Lovely. My wife had a Caesar salad sandwich. Reasonable prices and good service.

We had booked a table on Bank Holiday Monday as I had read about gluten free options. We waited over 45 minutes to receive our breakfast and when it arrived the gluten free poached eggs on toast was inedible. The gluten free bread was full of seeds - this was not advertised as seeded bread and I have a medical condition and am unable to digest seeds. The ‘bread’ was more like a cake and completely crumbled apart when you cut into it. My parents had sourdough which was burnt and extremely difficult to cut through. Scrambled egg was more like a chewy omelette. When we spoke to the staff upon leaving they were extremely rude and there was no apology. They felt that because seeds are gluten free they didn’t need to list it as seeded gluten free bread, however, agreed that if ‘normal’ white bread has seeds they would list it as seeded white bread...this doesn’t make sense! Disgusting attitude and chaos in the kitchen. Other bookings arrived and had to clean their own tables to sit at - not COVID compliant. We won’t be returning and I wouldn’t recommend their gluten free options at all.

Having just moved to Aldeburgh & wanting to try our new local eateries, we booked for breakfast at the Aldeburgh Cafe, taking advantage of the last day for ‘Eat our Help Out’. Well, what a hidden gem, such creative use of outdoor space (what is essentially a gravel car park!) Fortunately the weather was kind to us for this outdoor eating treat! A delicious and substantial breakfast of field mushrooms and goats cheese and bacon, Brie and avocado on 2 generous portions of sourdough toast, washed down with 2 large mugs of coffee and fresh juice. As we walked away, totally satiated, we agreed that even had we paid full price, it was good value for money! Thanks Mel, keep up the great work!

Shouldn't be telling you this, but went to the Aldeburgh Cafe today for breakfast. I saw this place mentioned on here, and thought we would give it a go. Absolutely lovely little place tucked out of the way, and not subject to the haughtiness of 'seafront' Aldeburgh, or inhabited by the summer hordes of the 'Essex massive', although the use of a 4x4 may be need if the access road deteriorates :-)Friendly place, Breakfast freshly cooked to order, and very reasonable indeed, and when we come back again (from Kent :-)) we will take a breakfast or a Brunch here

This was a new discovery for us and very pleased we found it! The setting is good and loved the outdoor area with painted wooden furniture, plsnts etc. It was a particularly hot day and we were struggling to find some shade. There was a great choice of drinks and I had ginger beer and other half more unusually chose banana milksake..but when i tasted it..yum! It was freshly made and came in a milkbottle with recyclable straw..both aesthetically and environmentally pleasing. To eat, he had ham hock hash which looked tasty was a really decent plateful and I had goats cheese snd mushrooms on sourdough..this was delicious but may have benefitted from a little salad on the side just to freshen it up. We took away a homemade cherry bskewell tarr which was outstandingly good..pastry just melted in your mouth! The lady serving us was very warm and pleasant. We will definitely be back!

Visited this cafe today 26.08.19 for breakfast. After getting fed up with breakfast in Aldeburgh Town and abrupt service decided to make the trip to the cafe away from the sea front. Firstly, we were greeted with smiles and efforts to sit us in the shade - much appreciated. The food was delicious and the service brilliant!!! All in all very good value and will be back. After half decent service in the town at other places, we got a bit fed up of being treated as we don't matter, and will be returning for breakfast when we are in town and looking forward to trying the Sunday roast as well. I’ve been meaning to eat here for several years after my husband had a sneaky breakfast here without me. To be honest in the past 4 years I’ve never got past ‘choppings hill bakery’ or Aldeburgh market but with Luke and Martin leaving the bakery I decided it was time to find a replacement. Munchies has never done it for me I’m afraid so yesterday I left the safety of the high street and visited the cafe. This is now my new go to favourite. The ladies were so kind and despite being very busy, they dried off a table, provided comfy cushions and we sat outside ( bonkers on the 2nd November) in the sunshine. Whilst we were waiting I had the opportunity to check out others orders and every plate looked scrumptious , so much so that although I’d only planned to have a coffee I ended up with poached eggs and mushrooms on granary. I’ll be back!

We found this cafe in the middle of the afternoon when looking for a late lunch, tucked away behind a garden centre on the outskirts of Aldeburgh. Out of the limited choice on the menu, we settled on a Welsh Rarebit and a Bacon Baguette with tea. The food is freshly cooked, so expect a short wait, however, we just got on with our cups of tea while we waited. By the time the food arrived the tea was almost finished so we asked the waitress if we could have a refill of hot water to refresh our pot, after a bit of negotiation she eventually agreed to our request. If you like strong leaf tea, then this is the place for you but don't expect a ready hot water refill to go with it! The Welsh Rarebit was very good but two slices of bread on the plate looked a bit lost, some salad would have been beneficial to both presentation and substance. The bacon baguette contained decent quality bacon but again, some salad on the plate would have added to presentation and substance. You have a choice of whether you'd like to sit inside or out, but as we went on a very sunny day, we opted for an outside table. As we arrived mid-afternoon, we thought it might be busy with people having afternoon tea, however, this was not the case, it was very quiet. All in all, the food and the tea were enjoyable but pricey for what you got - £5 is not cheap for what amounts to 2 slices of cheese on toast and another £5 for a bacon butty!

I have reviewed this place before and when I went back today, I couldn't think why I had left it so long.It is exceptional.I am somewhat daunted by the web site's asking for the 'overall rating of this restaurant'.This does not pretend to be a restaurant. It is simply the best cafe around, producing amazing breakfasts, wonderful lunches [and yes, you can get wine there} and, I am told, excellent teas.It is the only place in Aldeburgh I know that happily welcomes a table of elderly locals who may spend an hour drinking a cup of tea and eating a piece of cake, with the same warmth as holiday-making families with numerous members having a slap up breakfast and obviously spending far more.Add to this Mel's cooking and the welcome dogs receive and the lovely blue tables outside and the ingredients are just marvellous. The food is truly excellent. There is something for everyone and the dishes of the day are always simply delicious.Steak pie today.......... wonderful.Far too full for a pudding, you think. Then you hear what there is.Fatal.This time it was apple crumble with local apples and sultanas. What few people know is that Mel will happily, given a bit of notice, rustle up a dish you have eaten there and let you pick it up. You can then scamper off home and preen. As it is in one of your own dishes delivered when the order was made, everyone assumes it was you who made it. No need to lie then.........A god-send, I would have thought, for busy mothers with masses of children trying to juggle holidays, 'quality time' and catering. Wish it had been around when I was one!Apart from locals, the only people you will see here are those who really know Aldeburgh and have bothered to explore its nooks and crannies. As said in a previous review, it is blessedly unpretentious and straightforward. The kitchen is open plan and Mel makes no secret of how she runs the place and her organisational powers are admirable.Nothing is too much trouble for her and her staff.I only pray it stays as it is.

Well that statement implies I have visited every cafe in Aldeburgh and tried and tested their bacon butty offerings in every one. I have not. But I DO know a good bacon butty when I see one, and when I eat a good one, I certainly know it. And this little, out of the way, round the back of the garden centre, tucked away in the far corner cafe excels! I wandered into this small estate whilst my wife was enjoying the delights of a birthday hot stone massage. I had an hour to kill and saw a sign for "The Exotic Garden" and got inquisitive. Then a sign saying Vintage Clothes Emporium" and got noisier still. Then another for a cafe! Aha I thought! A nice warm cafe to warm me on a blustery November weekday. My mouth began to water thinking of a steaming mug of coffee and that bacon sarnie. Now this place is not the most appealing externally. In fact, it doesn't really do "appealing" at all! But once you go in, there are well spaced tables, they ask you to choose a table and that they'll be with you shortly. And so they were. It was midday and breakfasts had really ended but rustling me up a bacon butty on whole meal bread was no trouble. There were newspapers on the rack to read. Nice touch. Even a Times! The coffee arrived promptly and was well....nothing exceptional, but then the butty arrived with 2 different bottles of brown sauce, HP and a Suffolk local variety. The bacon was thick and juicy with probably 3 or more huge rashers tumbling out of the sides of the butty. I chose the local sauce, applied it liberally and tucked in.......Mmmm. De----licious! With a tasty coffee to wash it down, it was just what the old guy ordered. Yum! So yes, the place could do with improving its kerb appeal. It might then get totally packed out so you wouldn't get a table though. So I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS. Keep up the great work I say to the 2 elderly ladies running the Aldeburgh Cafe. I absolutely LOVED it!!

We visited this cafe on a cold January day and received a wonderful warm welcome .It is only small and quite basic furniture wise but the food and staff are great. We had bacon baguettes which had several rashers of lean perfectly cooked bacon in a very fresh roll and my husband and brother had the ploughmans which were also very good. The cakes looked very tempting but we were too full ! The lady cooking and the Scottish lady serving were great fun and very efficient . We will definitely visit again if we are in the area .

What an amazing place this cafe is. First class food and great service. Breakfast was the best I have had in a restaurant for a long time - fresh ingredients cooked to perfection and served with a smile.

We stopped by this great little Cafe - Mel does the cooking and Janice is out front - food is fantastic - good home cooked non pretentious staples that need skill to impress - which it does in spades!Only regret was not partaking the local wines! We will be back...

Nice relaxed lunch. We dined outside where dogs are welcome! They understood cross contamination & kitchen were pretty helpful advising on what was gluten free. Lovely gluten free bread was readily available!

My friend who lives not far from the cafe suggested we visit tge Aldeburgh Cafe for brunch. We were greeted by very friendly staff and the service was excellent. We opted for the Full English and it was very good. Poached eggs were cooked beautifully and the bacon and sausages lovely. Well worth the visit. There is a great garden centre next to the cafe too.

This place is off the beaten track, but not far at all. It is beside Planet Pots which arguably has the best pots in Suffolk. Another reason for turning a right as you enter the town. This is a charming café and thoroughly deserves the wonderful reviews that have been written. Breakfast outside is fun and the food beautifully cooked to order and the plates HOT! Lunch inside or out is infallibly delicious and Mel cooks in full view of everyone. This place so deserves to succeed. A visit is thoroughly recommended. It is spotless, unpretentious and friendly with good food. What more can one ask?

What a great little place! Found this place yesterday looking for breakfast. What a gem. Great food and brilliant staff and owner. We went back again today and great again. If you are looking for a great place to eat you couldn't do better! Been told by locals they do a great lunch too. Think we will go again before we head home to Lincolnshire.

We went to the Aldeburgh cafe a couple of Sundays a go. I had a a red pepper quiche and amy husband a roast dinner. Quiche served with a varied salad. Great range of flavours. pastry light and crisp. later tried the scones - again light and crisp. We had dogs with us so appreciated the sunny outdoor seating area and the great view. look out for the dancing ponies in the field next door!

We stopped in to this cafe for a quick bite after walking along the beach. It was a hot day and we sat out in the outdoor eating area. My husband had a cornish pastie and I had a currant muffin and a cup of Americano. It was lovely. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and attentive. It is a great place to grab a quick meal!

This is a lovely little cafe with delicious food and great atmosphere. Whenever me and my partner go to Suffolk we always try and visit this cafe. We have been there for three times already and were always very happy with the food and service. Every time we visit the cafe I always have the fish pie with seasonal vegetables, which is absolutely the best fish pie I have ever had anywhere else (and believe me I had many!). My partner always chooses something different and everything that we have tried was fresh and tasty. Not only the food is very good, but the prices are very reasonable and I would even say are on the cheap side comparing to other places. The cafe has a shop next door too where you can get fresh vegetables and fresh sea food. You can ever buy the fish pie if you are on the run!!! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone as it is lovely and great value for money, they also do great coffee and lovely cakes. This is definitely one of our favorites, such a shame we are not locals!

Had a lovely afternoon tea, which was beautifully presented. Nice to have the option to have it at lunchtime as ‘lunch’ although we still didn’t manage it all! Took the rest home for later - also lovely to be able to bring our dog too!
