My friend and I tried and go here every Friday for our lunch. We enjoy a variety of items on the menu like the cheese and onion toasty, the coronation chicken sandwich, the BLT and beans on toast. The also have a great selection of cakes. We always find the staff nice and friendly and are willing to help with any questions.

We have been here several times and always enjoy it. It is light and airy and not too cramped with tables. It does get busy however. There are some traditional tables and chairs and some armchairs, sofas and coffee tables. We went late morning today and had a bacon sandwich each. The bread was fresh but the bacon was quite hard and salty. It was probably cooked and re-heated. The drinks were fine. A chap with a trolley kept going through the cafe to go to the outside area leaving the doors to slowly close letting in a blast of freezing cold air! It wasn't as enjoyable as normal. We will go again to check if it was a one-off or not. Fingers crossed.

Been here many times over many years when visiting the excellent gallery but sadly the cafe never improves. All we had was a bacon sandwich, a toasted teacake and tea. The sandwich was on stale bread and the bacon greasy, the tea cake was OK but came with margarine not butter and there wasn't enough tea for 2 cups each. The staff were pleasant but not very organised. There is a comments box but I couldn't find any comments cards. Sad, could be nice.

Decided to leave a review after reading some of the recent ones given and then visiting for lunch today with 2 adults and 3 children under 8. Wasn't sure what to expect after the most recent reviews but we had such an excellent experience, managed to find a table for 5, really good choice on the menu for the grown ups and the kids menu was very good value for money with a good choice, very easy to order with fantastic customer service - very polite and helpful - and the food arrived quickly and was excellent. Could not fault our visit

The completely unprofessional and ill tempered staff with the exception of the chef ruined our trip to the gallery. First the poor woman on the till trying to take orders lacked training and was completely out of her depth. There were two waitresses and one had to supervise her all the time so that created more pressure. After a long wait to order in a queue of only 3 we chose a table. It wasn't busy as we were quite early for lunch with around 12 diners were in. I talked to the lady trying to work the till, asked her if she'd had any training working it before customers arrived. She said no, they are in at the deep end. I told her she had my sympathy and as there was a Suggestion Box right in front of me I said I'd make a constructive suggestion re training. But there were no cards to write on. A waitress tore me a scrap of paper to use. Quite quickly a waitress brought my friends meal, which looked very nice and said mine would be a bit later. This was unprofessional as people having lunch together want to eat at the same time. Then the waitress came back again and apologised saying she had brought that meal to the wrong table. Unfortunately my friend had already eaten some as it was getting cold. The waitress said mine would be a longer wait now as they were backed up. A few more people had just arrived. By this time my friend was halfway through her meal and it was obvious we were not going to be eating together and lunch would take much longer than usual. As we only had 2 hours for eating then looking around the gallery I went to the till and told them to cancel my meal. I got a refund, my friend eat half her food and we left. While at the till getting the refund and in front of the queue of around 9 people the older waitress gave an aggressive diatribe about how mistakes happen, they do their best, short staffed, lack of training etc etc etc. She reeled off so many excuses for the abysmal service it sounded well rehearsed. I get it that she is badly trained, short staffed. Management need to deliver what these women need to perform their roles effectively and professionally.

Not as good as it used to be. We only wanted tea but had to wait over 15 mins for it. Seemed to have a poor system of getting orders out. Also had to ask for our table to be cleared from previous customers, this after about 10 minutes of sitting there. We noticed others had to do the same.

We've visited this café several times over the past few years and it's always been a welcome rest from visiting the gallery. The drinks are great (perfect cup of tea, huge hot chocolate for the children), there is a range of cold treats on display and they have a hot menu (which we haven't tried, but looking at others' plates it looks good!).Some people find it a bit pricey - well it's a little above average but the service is good and the quality is high, and I don't mind paying a bit extra in a place like this because any profits they make will go back into the gallery I assume.

This facility within the Ferens Art gallery in Hull has been comprehensively updated and refurbished since I last visited it.The quality of the produce is unquestionably good but the prices are ridiculously high, based on what I was going to order.A small bottle of Fentimans soft drink was asked for and I almost fell over when the cost of £3.10 was asked for!!!Now, I know that this facility is owned by the City Council (although it operates under a wholly owned limited Company) and that Government financing of local authorities has been slashed since 2010 but come on! £3.10 for a 330ml bottle of anything is outrageous!!!I asked a member of the museum staff ( employed by Hull Culture & Leisure Ltd ) about the arrangements and was told that salaries had been reduced since privatising the culture and leisure service by the Council.Disgraceful!

Poor Hull! Hull City Council mean everso well - but so often the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Here is a perfectly situated Restaurant, very comfortable, in a fantastic Municipal Art Gallery. But it is trying too hard! It is trying table service when Self-Service might work better. And it's attempting silver tea-service silverware, when an ordinary Urn would be quicker, cheaper, more appropriate for speedy Patrons oppressed by having seen too mush Art far too concentrated! We had Quiches - which were adequate, had they been half the price! Rocket Salad- de riguer - but rather flavourless. Good chips. Laboured table-service, despite our being the only Customers! Could Hull City Council perhaps meet with Item No.1 on its Agenda : "Who is the Ferens Restaurant there to serve - & how can that service be more welcoming, more efficient in the outcome?"

Beautifully situated on the edge of the Grade I Listed Princes Dock, sunlight penetrates the dining space, bounced off the water creating dappled dancing patterns on the ceiling, all tempered by the substantial "brise soleil mounted outside the full height picture windows. Surrounded by fine art, and fully waitress served, lunch in this fine space is a true delight! Excellent Coffee tempered a substantial slice of homemade vegetarian quiche, served with a salad and homemade butchers chips was the selected fayre on this visit and did not disappoint! We had been looking around the Turner exhibition and were watching a short film when I began to feel lightheaded and unwell. I decided to head to the cafe for something sweet to eat while my husband watched the rest of the film. You have to choose a table (and note the table number) before ordering and then the order is brought to the table. However if you are on your own it is difficult to ‘bag a table’. I only had my handbag and wasn’t going to leave that to go to the counter to order! I left a leaflet in the end, doubting that it would save the table but it did the trick.I ordered a cup of tea (1.95) and a Danish pastry (2.95) before re-claiming my table. It was brought quickly by a waitress.Anyway the tasty Danish pastry did the trick and I felt much better after that. It’s a busy cafe with a pleasant atmosphere. The total bill was £4.90. I am not sure that the staff could cope at peak times though. We have tried to find a table previously for lunch and been unsuccessful.

I ordered the beef, red onion & horseradish sandwich expecting something like the now discontinued sandwich you could once buy at Pret a Manger. Not an unreasonable expectation given the price. I was to say the least disappointed with what I got which was two thin slices of beef, a third of which consisted of fat and gristle which had to be removed in order to make the sandwich fit for human consumption. My friend's cheese and pickle sandwich wasn't much better - it would have been overpriced at £1.50.This place is a complete ripoff and really lets down a fine art gallery.

We've visited the cafe before it was refurbished. It now looks better but the service and food is much poorer. We found a lovely table outside but ended up clearing it ourselves as no-one came at all - the whole time we were there - to clean the tables after the previous customers had left. My partner went and ordered our food - two lattes, two soups and one sandwich. The coffees were hot but tasteless. When the food came there was only one bowl of soup, which we gave to my partners elderly father. When we queried why my partner had no food the young man who served us came back and said the order only showed one soup He didn't offer to get us another bowl - which of course we would have paid for, so my partner shared my sandwich instead. The sandwich wasn't very big and was meant to be hummus and pepper. The bread was stale at the edges and there was hardly any pepper in the mixture. The accompanying salad was a small pile of unedifying lettuce with no dressing, one tiny piece of tomato and one tiny piece of cucumber. Overall poor quality and poor value for money. Very disappointing- we won't bother again.

If busy, it can take along time to get served. Always have a table no before you order as otherwise, it's wasted time in the queue. The food is good but if having a salad, ask for dressing beforehand as it arrives with no dressing (every time). A bit pricey, particularly for salad about £7/£8. The cake is overpriced and you get a much smaller slice that is on show if the cake is portioned. Still it's a pleasant place but could do with a garden at the back.

I think this Café may have been renamed recently to Venue Hull? We visited late afternoon after an inspiring visit to the Ferens art gallery (helpful volunteers!). Pleasant view from Café of Princes Quay. However, our coffees were distinctly below par; a fairly tepid filter coffee and a latte, which contained little flavour of coffee, only an after-taste of fatty milk. Maybe our error was to visit half an hour before closing? The assistant who took my order at the counter was rather surly, answering with a curt "no" to my request of "could I have a flat-white coffee?" I subsequently noticed on the menu that additional shots of coffee were available at extra cost. Anyway, too late as we wouldn't be returning to this Café!

The name change will have come from the recent refurbishment of the whole Art gallery. Crowded but good value. And I suspect that it is that good value that generates the footfall. We have now taken lunch here twice since the Ferens was re-opened after a major refurbishment. Both times the meals have proved to be very filling. The first time we just chose sandwiches but the second time saw a choice of a pasta dish. The pasta dish was very generously filled with topping and any sandwiches have also been very well filled. It is very good to feel that one is receiving value for money. On both occasions, there was some food left over because we had had sufficient. Despite the busy nature of the lunchtimes, the staff appeared to be on top of everything, were very pleasant, and catered for anything out of the ordinary without difficulty (eg, request for sauces or clean knives when the knives available had not been cleaned properly before being put out for use). At the time we visited, their FSA Hygiene rating was 5 from a Sept 2014 inspection; ie, before the refurbishment.

A perfect latte brought over by a waitress. I could see that there was plenty of choice of snacks and prices for both drinks and snacks seemed very reasonableOn the second occasion I was with a friend who had also visited on a previous occasion and not been able to find a seat at lunchtime. And this is what happened to us. We arrived shortly after 12.30 to find all the tables had been taken and the rule is you choose a table before purchasing your food and drink. After about 5 minutes with no sign of anyone leaving we left.It would seem the café has become so popular that lunchtime visits need to be made as early as possible or try after the rush. Or maybe the tables could be organised by a member of staff as no-one appeared to be doing so? Just a thought.

My sister had a 4 quid large bowl of soup, which she assured me was not of a good quality - another let down. There appeared to be gross overstaffing - perhaps there are some potential savings here, then a better quality of fare could be offered. I visited the cafe with my elderly parents and daughter while visiting the art gallery. Having seen the rating, I wasn't sure I had the right place, and looking at the last few reviews, I cannot believe them as my experience was wonderful. The staff were rushed off their feet, but were absolutely great. There are obviously some management problems (no pasta - which they came to tell us after we had ordered) but they were exceedingly helpful in finding good alternatives for vegetarians who cannot eat peppers, they cleared tables so people could sit down. WELL DONE TO A CROWD OF CHEERFUL HARD WORKING PEOPLE. Pity you have reviews from some miserable unpleasant people. The food was great too - and excellent value - £3.95 for a jacket potato - if you don't like it, go to the pub across the road and pay £8.95, £5.95 for a wonderful stilton and walnut salad. Most galleries would triple these prices .......

I've missed La Loggia while it has been closed for the refurbishment of the gallery and was happy to see it was being extended because getting a table at busy times was difficult; however when I arrived after the reopening I was disappointed to see the SHOP IN THE CAFE! There are few if any more tables and now two doors to negotiate, three if you include the double doors into the cafe area. Getting a table is like a bun fight. This is City of Culture year, we need to impress our visitors. The gallery is great but the cafe is not. The shop needs to be back where it used to be and more tables brought in.

IMPOSSIBLE to visit in a wheelchair without a dozen helpers. No automatic doors - which they claim is because of;...the age of the building: RUBBISH or there would be no doors at all - especially not modern glass ones!...to protect the environment for the artworks: RUBBISH! Have you every visited the National Gallery? automated doors do not open and close in an environmentally detrimental manner. Manual doors let in the outside air too. They are not fitted with any special filters or curtain shrouding....La Loggia is impossible to get near in a wheelchair. The crowds are impossible and no sprovision or thought has gone into disabled access....Parking: 20 to 25 potential parking bays, including 5 disabled bays, have been blocked off and the (ONE) nearest disabled bay is now well outside of the walking distance (and self-propelled wheelchair-user's pushing distance), beind around 1,000 yards away. Instead there is a brand-new purpose-built Taxi Rank and flower bed!

We always used this place when in the city at lunchtime, it seemed a secret kept from most of the people in Hull in that you could always get a table or sofa. Now, it is almost like 'Musical Chairs' such is the demand for a table. The visitor numbers to the Gallery must be wildly in excess even the most optimistic of forecasts, it was packed on each occasion we have been. Consequently the cafe cannot meet current demand, visitors are requested to find a table before ordering. Roll on the warm weather when the deck area is in use.The menu is almost identical to its predecessor and remains simple, basic fare at a reasonable price. The staff deserve a mention for being so chirpy and helpful in the mid-afternoon on yet was another exceptionally busy day.

Had a lovely few hours in the gallery. We took the kids who were more interested in the wonderfully refurbished café. We enjoyed seeing the art and then decided to stay for lunch. The café staff were lovely, the kids having Panini and chips, myself a sandwich and my wife was very surprised to find overnight oats available which suited her health kick wonderfully. We may not visit to see more art as a group but we will definitely be going to the café again situated in the city centre. Hidden gem

I have previously reviewed the Ferens, but this review is for the cafe.Despite new fittings, new coffee machine and a very nice setting, the cafe is a disaster. Long waiting times, dry chocolate cake and still frozen sponge cake combined with lazy staff will harm the reputation of this cafe. Hull wants people to visit during its Year of Culture but my experience was enough to put me off.The Gallery is run by Hull City Council, or should be. If this disaster is not to continue, the Council needs to get a grip of the cafe.

After all the money spent on the gallery, it's so sad to see the cafe still not able to cope. It needs direction and it needs caring, competent staff. Above all, it needs to serve good food, not dry chocolate cake or still frozen sponge cake, make in a factory, who knows where.

This is one of my favourite places, a quiet retreat from the bustle of the city. There are comfortable sofas or if the weather is fine you can sit outside and enjoy the tranquility in the sun.I like to drop in when I'm shopping and particularly enjoy the hot chocolate. You can have hot or cold drinks, and a snack.

Visited with my wife. We have visited the National gallery many times having lived in Buckinghamshire for the last thirty years. However this by far one of the best local gallaries I have seen. A must visit in year of culture in 2017.

The food at the cafe in the Ferens Art Gallery is always freshly made. My grandson and I both had the egg mayo sandwich, it was delicious, there was a choice of breads for your sandwich, I followed my sandwich with a slice of yummy lemon drizzle cake, the boys went for chocolate muffins, which they said were first rate. The service was good. The cafe is a hidden gem, as not everybody knows its there, but I would recommend it. And following your visit you can have a look round the art gallery.

Called in today for lunch. it was quite busy but most people seemed to be finishing. I waited five minutes at my table but no service. Went to the counter and asked if I should order food there, to be told by the lady there that she would come and take my order. Returned to my table and waited ten more minutes and endured the cacophany of scraping chairs on the hard tiled floor. Meanwhile the one person serving continued to take payments from customers who had finished their meals while two others cleared tables. I left, so cannot comment on the quality of the food, though the menu seemed expensive: £7.95 for a bacon & mushroom sandwich (baguette).

This café needs a make-over including staff training. For the average food quality it seems to be a bit on the expensive side.

This used to be a very good place for a light lunch but recently it has dived in most respects. The staff seem unsure as to the ordering system, do we come to the table or does the customer order at the counter ? The staff clearly need some customer service training - a smile costs nothing. We ordered a chicken baguette recently which came with a few chips and a salad. The salad was very basic and had no dressing thus rendering it pretty tasteless. The chicken baguette had no butter or any seasoning, again very bland and actually difficult to eat, but the chips were good.We used to regularly use the art gallery for a snack, and a visit, but now we avoid it.We have eaten in many art galleries around Europe and this is probably the worst. City of Culture 2017 needs to get its act together and provide a total visitor experience.

Having been a customer here for many years it's recent nose dive seems to have coincided with the councils take over. (No, I do not work for the council and I do not have an axe to grind) To begin with the menus are terrible, badly printed with cropping marks, torn, grubby, pages missing, parts of them on other tables which gives the impression no-one cares. Why have so many staff, I visited at half past two and there were six members of staff all doing their best to ignore customers. Apparently it is table service but no-one came to serve me nor acknowledged me so I walked to the counter to place an order, the young lady in the kitchen side stepped so she didn't have to serve me so I side stepped to make sure she saw me. Credit to her she was friendly but it wasn't genuine, they were having a much better time gossiping. Another young lady with little decorum brought my latte and cutlery and carefully plonked them on the table. The latte was not nice, no froth on top, it was insipid and for the first time in my life I encountered a disgusting lump of 'skin' from the milk in the bottom of the glass, quite revolting. The food arrived a while later but they did not have my first choice so opted for a second, it tasted reasonable, the chips which came with the sandwich were very oily. I witnessed another customer waiting to be served having to call over a waitress after being ignored, a few minutes later this customer left. All in all, I would not recommend this establishment until someone in charge takes charge, what you have here is a grubby truckers cafe playing hookie in a beautiful art gallery. It really is a disgrace, I suggest you train your staff to be attentive, polite and instill some basic decorum. I did not relish witnessing one of the waitresses wiping her nose up her arm whilst standing in the kitchen doorway before carrying an order to someone. This place is most unpleasant, mismanaged and typical of a apathetic council run service. Please give your hard earned money to an establishment that actually cares about its customers!

Food was ok, except my blueberry cheesecake lacked any blueberries - guess I was just unlucky. On a Saturday afternoon there was a fairly steady flow of customers to occupy the assistants, so a few tables were left uncleared for a while. Can't fault the staff on duty, but maybe employ one more person for busy times.

Having visited a few months back which was lovely, I took my mother for what I hoped would be a nice lunch. How wrong was I. Apart from a nice young girl on the till, the other staff seemed more interested in a social life than the customers. The food was diabolical. I had a jacket potato which must have been cooked some time ago and reheated as it was an awful brown colour inside. As if this wasn't off putting enough, I was also given a filthy cup with a clear brown stain and dirty cutlery. When I asked for a clean cup, the waitress tried to make out she couldn't see it. I think a trip to spec savers is in order there. I'm not an awkward customer and would never usually give a terrible review but the service and food needs to improve before I would return. Such a shame because it used to be really nice.

As always we had a great time in this lgbt friendly cafe bar. Friendly chatty staff fun atmosphere (there's often a drag act on or dj) and most of the prices are cheaper than weatherspoons.

What a shame. This place is clearly run down. Hygiene and housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired. Food - edible but disappointing and certainly not as the pictures in the menu promise. We've been coming here for 15 years but this was the last time. A sign of this times i guess. This place needs serious investment to bring it to its former glory.

From the moment I walked in with my 5 month old baby, Emme welcomed me. I sat down and fed my baby whilst I waited for friends to come and Emme went out her way to come to my table to take my drinks order and bring the card machine to me as I was feeding my baby. She was very smiley, friendly and checked how our food was when it came. Thank you Emme for your lovely service!
