La Choza in Brighton and Hove

Wwnt on a Tuesday for lunch. Food was generally good, although one rice dish was clearly microwaved as it was so so hot in the middle. Unfortunately, the nachos never came as it was never put through to the kitchen. Secondly, there was a long delay in another one of the dishes arriving as it seemed it was also forgotten /missed. The waitress said they would take the 2 children's meals off as a way to say sorry, but when the bill arrived, they were still on there. They were removed after I pointed it out; the waitress handled it with no fuss It is a good atmosphere, and the restaurant has a lovely aesthetic.

Can’t comment on the food. Popped in for a quick bite. They were empty. Rude women behind the counter. V condescending . More interested in chatting to each other than taking our order. We left without ordering.

I went here yesterday the waiters were so nice and helpful and the atmosphere was so colourful and welcomimg now onto the food the presentation was perfect I got a bowl of nachos and a pulled pork burito the nachos were full of flavour and were great the burito however was underwhelming I expected it to be so flavourful but all I could taste was cheese no beans no sour cream no pork just cheese overall I recommend 👍

This is the first time we have been back since taking a break due to some very poor service and declining food quality. This place has a reputation as being way too cool and not in a good way! We asked a very simple question about a menu item and were responded to as if we were complete idiots. The person seemed to be someone in charge and left shortly after. This was a great place for good food and great atmosphere but the 'we are too cool' attitude of the staff and the general feeling that they think they are doing you a favour by serving you has driven us and all our friends away. There are plenty of other food outlets that treat you well and serve great food nearby. I'm afraid I don't think this place will be around for much longer and is likely to follow the same fate as their closed site on the other side of town. Stay away... its simply not worth your money or time.

great food, plenty of options and not too long between courses. no booking under 7 people however if you find out kitchen opening times you’re guaranteed a space. a bit cramped where you’re pretty much sat next to other customers and service a little slow towards the end however all lovely staff nevertheless. would recommend and go back ☺️

A tiny little intimate taste of Mexico in the UK. It's little intimate atmosphere adds to its authenicity. Make no mistake, this is the real deal. Warm and welcoming, the food is magnificent. If one doesn't have the coin to travel to Mexico itself, then one should sample authentic Mexican food from this gem. 5 star! Special mention to Lilly - fabulous hostess

Amazing food, but incredibly rude over the phone to me - nearly cancelled my booking because of it, very condescending and unprofessional. But the food is tasty, drinks are not the best.

Could not recommend enough. Even though the restaurant was full to the brim the staff were really attentive and made us feel at home. We ordered three margaritas - one classic, one hibiscus and one passion fruit . They were on the table in a matter of minutes and all were delicious. My partner and I decided to get fish tacos and her sister got a chicken and chorizo burrito. All of them were great and left my partner doing her “food dance” while eating - which only happens with the best of scran. We weren’t sure which salsa to go with so we got extra dips for the table. My favourite was the habanero, which was really spicy and hot but not in a gimmicky “blow your head off” kind of way - full of flavour and well balanced. The others had the pipian and if I remember rightly a green tomatillo type salsa - both very tasty. The atmosphere was great. We’ll deffo be back.

Rudest customer service on the phone ever! Literally slammed the phone down on me saying they were too busy to deal with my request! I am a Brighton resident and so disappointed I was spoken to like a complete idiot!

Over all a very underwhelming experience, four things for 44£ is insane. Food was very mild too little flavor and too many toppings and hardly any cheese in the burritos and nachos. Churros had wayyyy to much sugar on them it was almost inedible.

Seriously good food, great atmosphere, friendly service, colourful and authentic Mexican vibes, all the types of margaritas, all delicious!! Very reasonably priced! Great attention to detail and flavour and different levels of mild to hot! La Choza definitely go the extra mile in all things Mexican street food!! Highly recommend! 💖🔥🌶️💃🍹✔️💥🍻🥑💗🌎

Loved this little place! Had an amazing time with my friends! The staff was very attentive, polite and friendly. When I asked about the salsa they served the lady kindly explained how it was made and how spicy it was! The food was great too and it came out very quickly! Nicely seasoned and tasted great.

Casual, fast food venue that is very small and you are expected to share tables. No actual restaurant service, even though you are served, as staff are disinterested, do not smile and have no knowledge of the menu. Food was nice, cocktails were in a children’s size cup and overpriced-£10 for a standard margarita. Very angry at the 10% service charge for no service. Internal of the restaurant is beautiful and has a really nice atmosphere

Heard lots of La Choza and was expecting big things! Table was a bit sticky when we arrived, but given it’s a quick service place it wasn’t an issue. The burrito bowl was great, really tasty and good size for lunch. It did have some jalapeños on it, which was surprising considering we asked for it mild. Partner got a burrito and asked for it hot and with guacamole. Seemingly no guac in it, looking as he ate through it. We mentioned it were told it did, but evidently didn’t have it in… nor was the burrito hot. Service and vibe generally lovely. Potentially come back, but better places in Brighton I’d say.

What a fantastic place. Probably the best Mexican I ever had. If this was authentic, I might have to go there on holidays! Specially in love with their homemade sauces.

I love La Choza. Have been many times and always been good. Went for lunch today and as good as ever. The fish burrito is fabulous. (The photo is of the kids portion, which is just a little bit smaller than the adults size.)

I got a burrito and tortillas. It was a really tasteless burrito, not seasoned or saucy enough, 80% rice. The sauce that came with the tortillas was so little and again, not that flavorful. Nice area and fast service at least.

The waitress was quite rude, dumping our food on the table without saying anything or making eye contact. We had to ask another waiter to bring cutlery. Very poor service.

It’s a shame- the starter was pretty good, the main was totally average- fish tacos with little flavoring and barely any texture. The service however left a lot to be desired. Initially I put it down to being busy but actually the female waiting staff were plain rude, from slamming down cutlery to basically speaking to us as though they were doing us a favour. It’s not hard to smile and be polite- adding a service charge of ten percent was a bit of a joke really. We removed it, and won’t be back.

Warning when booking a large table and paying for deposit as one of the waitress confirmed the holding deposit didn't go through over the phone and it did, they also didn't take it off the final bill so had £20 stolen from them!

Got food poisoning from the food here on friday night, told the restaurant and they’re refusing to accept any responsibility. Very rude staff and sadly got made very ill, much better mexican places around anyway.

One of the best independent restaurants in Brighton & Hove. Always a first recommendation to visitors of the city. Can get very busy at the weekend, but well worth the wait time. Choose the Naga salsa for a real kick. <3 <3 <3

Literally the worst Mexican and deliveroo I’ve ever had. £32 - for 3 things. Calamari - turned up cold and squidgy. Fish burrito bowl - nothing to it, was cold, microwave rice with cheese and sour cream no flavour at all and tiny portion! Vegan nachos were quite nice though.

Always impressed by the freshness the menu and food and cocktails and everything highly recommended.

Had some great quesadillas here and I would definitely return. It's a nice place for people watching especially on a sunny day

it's street food so not the most incredible food although still one of the top Mexicans in Brighton although it is starting to get pricey. still would definitely recommend it! the vegan options are great

Although I only tried one appetiser and one cocktail, I expected more of the service and the food/drinks. It did not match what I know of an authentic Mexican experience with tasty food and happy/smily/kind staff (although one of the servers was nice).

Suggested by my son and his wife. Completely new cuisine to me. Enjoyed it greatly.

We have been wanting to come here for a while. Starters were nice, however the mains were a little disappointing. I am South American and was expecting better quality ingredients. The burrito is huge however not any better than some of the food chains. I had the Quesadilla and thought it was way too cheesy.. it tasted more like a toastie than anything else. It's okay if you want to have something similar to a Mexican restaurant experience but definitely not authentic. Also had the Michelada and it was okay. It is often busy and the inability to book in advance means long waiting times. It also feels understaffed for how busy it gets, so the staff who are there often feel rushed and the service time is slow.

Awful experience here tonight. Our starters were delivered to the wrong table who proceeded to eat them even though they didn’t order the same starters as us. The starter we ordered was then out of stock so we had to do without. We then had to sit next to the table eating our starters without them having a care in the world. The restaurant couldn’t have been anymore blaze about it, and didn’t even offer us a discount on our food at the end. This was the least they could have done for messing things up so badly. The waiter Milly proceeded to laugh when she said “we’ve ran out of wings too” appalling service.

We were looking forward to try La Choza since we had already been to all the other Mexican restaurants in Brighton. Little we knew, a big disappointment was expecting us. We had the pork chicharrones - the star, tasty maybe missing some sauce on the side -, birria - it was decent, the type of cheese in the quesabirria was a good choice -, and the Aguachile - this was the deal breaker... the presentation was great, but it was missing the key ingredient...lime juice, the whole base of the aguachile is the lime. I wonder if they have ever tried it or if they just followed some recipe they found - Imagine eating plain raw shrimp without lime... I asked for some limes to try to fix it... they were dryer than my heart... It is a real shame. It will be a while for us to take the risk again.

All I can say is WOW. It has never disappointed me every time I visit. Food is very authentic and hits the spot. Staff are so friendly. Love this place.

Plenty of choice on the menu and we look forward to trying more dishes! Our waitress was a little too keen to clear out plates despite the fact we were still eating, so we felt a little bit rushed - but other than that we had a great experience.

The tastiest tacos 🌮 super fresh ingredients, the best guacamole I've eaten outside of Mexico 🇲🇽 Be warned La Chozas cocktails are so good you will find yourself making your way through the whole list! My friends and I ordered a different cocktail each to try, ended up ordering another two rounds. The mescal list is extensive, these guys really know their stuff🔥😍

What an amazing place and vibe! Went to this place after being highly recommended on my holiday. The calamari was delicious followed by a really tasty king prawn burrito. Service was great and will definitely return when I am back down way for sure!

We really enjoyed La Choza and its great food and service. We took our 9-year old son there to introduce him to Mexican food as he enjoys trying different things now and he voted it his favourite restaurant in Brighton. We’ll definitely be back!

Never had a bad meal here. La Choza stands out from the many Mexican restaurants in Brighton and is well worth a visit.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was poor!!! Chicken wings were flavourless, and the cheese in the quesadilla was not wholly melted. The pineapple cooler drink was nice and refreshing.

This place had been recommended by a friend, so whilst in Brighton recently, my friend and I decided to grab lunch here and the food was excellent! La Choza is right in the middle of the Lanes and hard to miss with it’s bright pink exterior. We sat outside as it was a lovely day, and both had the “build your own” meals, which was such a good concept. The food was absolutely delicious and we were both stuffed. Our lunch, including a soft drink each, came to £12.50, which I thought was very good value for money given a burrito from Chipotle or Tortilla would have cost about the same (and been not nearly as nice!) The only disappointment was the service… I completely understand that a lot of places are struggling currently because of the “pingdemic” and COVID and supply chains, etc. But the service was pretty slow and the staff just seemed slightly annoyed that we were there. They weren’t rude per se, just quite blunt and offered no apology whatsoever for the wait on the food (which was about 40 mins from ordering to receiving it). They were very busy, but we were one of the first groups there, so I’m glad we didn’t get there any later than midday when they opened. I would absolutely go back again and recommend as the food we had was delicious and the restaurant is in such a beautiful spot. But I’m afraid I had to knock a star off (which I never normally do) just because we were quite disappointed with the service, which was a shame.

Good ambiance.Long established small restaurant.Not the first visit though previous was maybe 5/6 years ago .Food still tasty as before.I do not like huge amounts of food so this restaurant is ideal as they offer sensible size portions..Always easier to add on if one wants more. They obligingly squeezed fresh lemon and topped up with tap water for me .They have a reasonable range of herbal teas also.

It's a cozy place to have mexican food. they have veg and non veg options. I ordered veg Toastida with black beans and I loved it, a good portion to fill your stomach 🙂 just a tip for tourists, the restaurant seems to be open also in the evening where others are not.

I had the fish tacos last night and they were so dry that I couldn’t finish them, even though you only get two of them. I have tried the fish tacos before and they weren’t brilliant, however I thought perhaps I just caught them on a bad busy night. However, they were even worse this time. I was with a party of 5 and we all agreed that everything was subpar. Only one of us finished our meal, and even they said that was only due to hunger and not because it was anything special. The cocktails are nice. The staff are fine, they take your order and serve your table but they’re not particularly friendly or have any charm about them. I’ve ordered fish tacos from Carlito Burrito before and it’s significantly better. I probably won’t waste my time trying la choza again because it’s really not worth the money.

I can't recommend La Choza enough if you're looking for delicious, authentic Mexican food. The food is fresh and full of flavour. The atmosphere is fun and family friendly. The staff are bubbly and you're guaranteed to have a good time. Great vegan options and lots of delicious options for meat lovers as well. As well as great food, they do delicious margaritas as well and have a very decent selection of beers and wines.

The burritos were flavourless and bland. We asked for the habanero chilli sauce; it wasn’t in the burrito. The food just wasn’t nice. Service wasn’t great either; staff seemed very flat. Nice location though!

Having been here several times with friends and recommending it to others, I was badly disappointed by my latest visit. The main dish was very small - to the point it felt that ingredients were maybe low in the kitchen. Ordered chips and guacamole to start that never arrived (and were removed from bill). Despite ordering more than 40 quid for 2 people, we were rushed from our table in less than 1 hour. The waitress brought the card reader even though we hadn't asked for it, giving a pithy insincere 'thank you'. It clearly is a management priority to push maximum covers no matter how much someone orders, and in my experience, to detriment of a relaxing dining experience. I won't rush back.

Fantastic food - I loved their bean burrito and my partner had an incredible prawn burrito. The setting, staff and food were wonderful. Definitely visit!

The vibe of the place is lovely, great music (bonobo) however the food was very disappointing. Everything needed more seasoning and sadly the tacos were soggy so fell apart when you picked them up. The service however was great and the staff are really nice <3 the cocktails were great too!
