This was perfect for a meal with friends. No photos as we were too busy eating. Garlic mushrooms were a perfect starter. The lamb rump was delicious. My friend went for the hand pulled pizza which she reported was very tasty - it certainly looked good. There was a good selection for the dessert menu which we made use of. Can recommend the lemon tart. Staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. Would definitely recommend.

Lamb was nice but potatoes tasted like aunt Bessie's. Nothing with chicken available on the menu when we went, which was a bit disappointing and my wine glass tasted really musty, like it had been sat on a shelf for years. Not somewhere I'd visit again, sadly.

Recently visted this place with my wife and friends after hearing good things french bistro etc must be good. We arrived just after 1830 with the door being unlocked just as we arrived with a not so warming welcome from the owner/ manager. We was then taken to the back of the reastaurant and shown to our table wich all just felt dark and gloomy and cold its just very old and dated and feels like your in a horror film. We ordered food i had steak which i asked for M rare now i eat a lot of steak and i wasnt quite sure what it was it looked nothing like M rare and it was so tough to cut and even chew it was really awfull no seasoning nothing . My wife had a small cheese pizza now i knew where this pizza had come from lidle small 7 inch pizza exactly the same even taste the same my kids eat these all the time i mean come on this place is supposed to be some sort of fancy french bistro should be renamed le we cant cook good food . They serve you cheap supermarket bought food and charge you out the arse for it . Seriously wetherspoons do a better meal than this place. The service was rubbish we didn't get asked once how are food was eventho i left my steak and my wife left most of her pizza surely alarm bells would ring surely. My wife and are freinds are in our late 20's and the only crowd that this place attracts is the older generation no wonder why with the dull food . I will never be going back to this place and strongly belive it needs updating and the food improving have you actually tried your own food ???? Strongly feel this place should be avoided

I came here and paid £30 for what was essentially Aunt Bessie Potatoes and Uncle Bens Rice. The potatoes had that powdered golden outside which is a dead give away. The french stick wasn't fresh, it was supermarket bread... and they couldn't even oven it for a few minutes to make it a little more fancy which takes no effort. The menu consisted of US, Mexican, Indian, Italian and french... so this isn't traditional as some "reviewers" point out I use quotations because their reviews are suspicious... they had a bad review a few days ago and HOURS later a 5* one appeared from an account that was created newly and had left 18 reviews in random places all within minutes of each other. I wasn't going to leave a review, but seeing as not only their food is a rip off for what it is, but they are manipulating Google star ratings I feel it is necessary. My advice, to them... buy real vegetables and cook your food fresh.

I'm struggling to leave a bad review because the waiter was so sweet. But I am a big believer that bad food shouldn't exist, so have to leave one out of principle. If they reduced the cost by 50% then they would be in the correct pricing bracket for their quality. Basically, a cheap cafe, in which case I'd have given them an extra star. But they are charging restaurant prices, so I have to review them as one. I'll start by saying this place is nothing close to French. Don't let the name fool you. They serve a few French dishes along with plenty of American, English, Italian, Mexican and Indian. This is always a red flag. Anyway, the starter was a French Onion soup which tasted 'fine'. It was served with a supermarket french stick but whatever. I mean, at least oven the bread for a few minutes first. TRY to be decent. The mains was where it went severely downhill. I had steak (credit where its due, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare) which was served with Roast potatoes, veg and a mushroom sauce. It all needed to be heavily seasoned with salt and pepper whilst on our plate. I would put money on the fact that the roast potatoes were Aunt Bessie... what with their seamless golden monotone colour all over each one like they were designed in a factory. Not crisp at all, just gold. The insides were flavourless. Seriously guys, just buy real potatoes.. they are cheap. The veg was all falsely electric in color - exactly like frozen veg is - and with no flavour. My girlfriend had Louisiana Chicken. Yes.. the American state of Louisiana. This was blatantly Uncle Bens. Which i know because of the slightly oversized nature of each rice grain and the consistent shape of each one. Coupled with the fact there was absolutely no flavour. There was also only a few pieces of chicken, which I know companies like uncle bens do to save on cost. It's an insult that we spent over ten pounds on something that costs about £1 in Tescos. Not to mention we don't eat that kind of rubbish, I have too much respect for my body, so feel tricked. Either way, I've eaten everywhere in Taunton over the short time of living here, this was the last place on the list that I kept delaying for one reason or another, but thought I'd try it to know if I was missing out... I wasn't and I won't be going back.

I'm genuinely confused at all the wonderful reviews this place has. The restaurant itself looks very cute which is what originally drew us in and the service was polite (although I could hear the waiters complaining rather loudly to one another about a particular customer they'd had) but as for the food... most of it was basically an overpriced, frozen pre-packaged meal. Aunt Bessie potatoes, the cheapest microwave rice imaginable and tasteless veg. The only thing that had actually been 'cooked' was the steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare as requested, although lacked in any seasoning. We had to add salt and pepper to everything. As for the menu, based on reading reviews and restaurant name, we expected it to be authentic French food, however, I think the only French thing on the menu was the French onion soup, which came out with clearly cheap white french stick bread bought from a supermarket. The rest of the menu was a red flag from the start, with options ranging from Mexican, American, Italian, Indian and British. I've always wondered why this place doesn't come up in any Google searches or why no one's ever mentioned/recommended it to me and now I see why. I think the only reason it survives is because it appeared to be packed with regular OAP's who wanted simple meat and veg with no real flavour.

I stumbled upon this place after I walked around Taunton Town centre hoping to find somewhere that seemed right to eat in, that was not some gross Knaff caff and where one sensed that would be worth going to.What a lucky find. I just that morning had finished my week-long stint cooking for a family in a country house, so I was eager to treat myself to lunch and be served on!It was the ONLY decent looking and inviting place I that found and fit the bill for a nice sit-down and a simple lunch. It did not disappoint, far from it, The server, the waitress blond with short hair was BRILLIANT. She handled the whole place on her own, and it was busy, did not miss a trick, and I was impressed. Having worked restaurants myself these floor staffs are rare, but an asset to any eatery. I was not kept waiting, she was on it and looked after me very well. I was at the back end of the place by the back door! I was happy tucked away in the alcove room of the site, with my pot of tea, crossword, and later the scrumptious Mushroom omelette with chips. See photo. A lunch that fell under £10.00, a great inexpensive treat. Thank you. A great Little Bistro. Love the quaint decor, murals and very Bistro like!

First thing to note - this is not a French restaurant... The name and the theme is French but the menu has items from many countries. We were not that inspired by the menu/looks from outside but you have to go in to see this is something different from the usual place and it has a style all of its own. We were greeted well and given a choice of places to sit. The time for the meal to come was quite long but we were updated and told the salmon takes a while to steam - it was really worth the wait! The Cajun salmon was delicious and came with a range of nice extras and was cooked to perfection. The chicken au poivre was a little less interesting but cooked nicely with a delicious au poivre sauce. I have read mixed reviews but we found the food delicious, the waiter excellent, the price reasonable and the atmosphere quite romantic compared to other restaurants locally so I would say give it a go. I think we will go back.

However, having said that, the steaks were really succulent, the service was very good and the sweets much better than you would get in a chain restaurant. Went to this lovely restaurant the other evening with two very good friends. It was superbe. [I'll try and use a few French words throughout the review!!] The Restaurant is at the top of the High Street and well hidden, but well worth finding. It is a bijoux restaurant, with about twenty places, at small tables in the front. I believe there is a larger function/party room at the back. The service is almost one-to-one and very quiet and calm. The food is excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. There is a very good choice on the menu and, as the name suggests, it is mainly French. There are also extras on a specials board. The ambiance is fantastic and every member of staff so accommodating. It is a hidden treasure that we will certainly be going back to.

A little romantic meal out with the husband turned out to be one of the best meals out. The little dark decor could be a tad off putting but look closer and you will u dears tank. The true Parisian feel was simply divine. The film posters and all the quirks made that part fab. The waitress was a lovely lady who made us so welcome. She was possibly the best waitress I have ever stumbled across. The food was nothing fancy just really well cooked, well presented simple eats and it was spectacular. We had a deal, 2 courses ordered before 7:30pm and you got a free bottle of wine. The wine was not cheap or nasty tasting. The steak was cooked to perfection and the whole atmosphere was better than I could have imagined. Worth a visit and embrace the fabulous quirky place that is La Bonne Vie. (Look out for the lights above the door. A sweet indication for the waitress to collect and serve food prepared upstairs)

We had a lovely steak meal here whilst our teenagers were at a concert in Vivary Park nearby. The service was very friendly and the food well cooked and presented. The value was excellent. We were in a smaller room at the back, and thought the atmosphere was very relaxed but intimate. Would thoroughly recommend.

I was looking forward to visiting this restaurant never have I been so disappointed, the pasta was unavailable on an already limited dated menu, the nervous waiter dropped the cutlery and spilt drink over my son, we paid for the drinks and left the almost empty venue, awful !

A group of us decided to dine here as never been and it is located close to the town. We had to pre order our meals which i thought was stange for only 11 of us. Food was nice, but expected better and lacked anything wow or great presentation. Was also expecting something more french. The decoration and appearance needs lifting and updating a bit too. The order was wrong and there was no apologies and the waitress pushed the blaime on to us, handled the situation terribly, and we were not offered anything else so people went without - the customer should be right and the attitude was some of the worst ive experienced when eatting out, they were not rude as such but should of reticfied what was wrong. Overall it was nice and the service generally was good, if it hadnt of been i would of marked as a 2. Will i be back, NO.

The exterior peeling paint is a symptom of an establishment that has proudly been around since 1976... And feels like it's last menu update was 1986.There is very little 'French' cooking on the menu... Esp. when the 'roast' potatoes are the powder coated type you buy at the freezer section in Lidl's. Meats around the table we generally over cooked and therefore rather dry. Veg was good, but presentation lacked any French finesse. Desserts we also from the 80's greatest hits... Again standard was ok but lacked a certain je ne sais quoi. The group we were celebrating with were great so the company lifted the evening into the list of memorable evenings out, but it will not be remembered for the tired food and decor of this little venue. First time there... Won't be going back.

Visited with two friends on a Friday night. Had no trouble booking a table - I emailed the restaurant and they rang back the same day. We were greeted and seated promptly but were not rushed at any stage of the meal. The restaurant has a retro, quaint style - cosy and charming. Our meals were very tasty and excellent value - three mains, three desserts, a bottle of wine, soft drinks and coffee for £76. It's not fine dining - it's unpretentious with no frills. Will certainly return.

We've been quite a few times now and the food is first class. Never been disappointed. Even on a busy sat night they still managed to fit us in and very quick service. It's a small place that offers a mixed menu so always something nice to choose from. I tend to order the fillet steak as its just melts in the mouth.

I used to come here in the early 80's, life changes and I had not been for a while. Back tonight for my daughter's 21st. Absolutely delicious meal, none of us could fault it, plus we had a free bottle of wine as we came early, thank you. I can really recommend la bonne vie. A real classic of which not many are left. As we walked out we were saying we could not wait to come back.

My husband and I haven't been to la Bonne vie in a while ,due to trying all the new restaurants that have recently opened in taunton, We went there last weekend it was like going home the food was fantastic as usual it all tasted homemade especially the lamb it was melt in the mouth,It was very good value for what we paid ,and they don't even make a service charge like so many other places these days ,so I won't be going back to the chains in a hurry also the wait staff gave very good service thanks for a lovely evening.P

Been for the first time to la bonne vie,and also the last time, the decor and the food is dated ,I had the cod ,frozen and smothered in dolmio tomato sauce, most of the food on offer came cash and carry I'm sure,it could be a decent place, but the management has to pull there socks up,Taunton has a lot of new up to date restaurants, must try harder!

What a great find! We found it on maps as a halfway (walking) stop between town and where we were staying overnight! Good choice of drinks, lovely atmosphere, quick service. Highly recommended 👌🏻

Plenty of parking, not too busy, no dogs are allowed only outside, which is very acceptable as selling food. Large cafe area, plenty of cider deals in the shop. Definitely recommend.

We've stayed here a few times and can't fault it. The rooms are clean, quiet, and the beds are comfy. Nothing too fancy, just a solid room above the pub.

My family and I have been loyal patrons of the Maypole for years, but since it changed ownership, I can confidently say that we won't be returning. I rarely leave negative feedback, but after our recent experience, I feel compelled to warn others. A family member of mine ordered a dish that, when it finally arrived, looked like a frozen meal deal. It was tiny and nowhere near the standard we're used to from this place. Naturally, she mentioned that it didn’t look right. Instead of fixing the issue, what happened next was straight out of a bad sitcom. The new owner, Vas (or however you spell it), decided to take this poor woman—mind you, a lady in her fifties—into a side room, away from everyone else. There, he proceeded to tell her that her opinion was basically wrong because -his- wife "likes it," so she should like it too. He continued to berate her in private, insisting that she's a trouble maker and barred her from the Maypole. Oh, and to add to the absurdity, he brought the plate of food in with him and performed some kind of amateur theatrics, tearing apart the food and eating it in front of her, declaring, "See? It's fine. There's nothing wrong with it." Honestly, it was unhinged behavior. But it didn’t stop there. When she returned to the bar, Vas wasn’t done. He continued to interrogate her, even dragging her husband into it by asking, "Is she like this because you’ve fallen out?" Excuse me? Since when is it acceptable for an owner to dive into someone’s personal life because they didn't like the standard of food? The whole interaction was disturbing, violating, and completely unprofessional. You do not humiliate a paying customer, let alone drag them into a private room to do it. To top it all off, the prices have gone up while the portion sizes and quality have nosedived. At this rate, they’re going to lose every last customer. So, Vas, if you're reading this, here's a bit of unsolicited feedback for you: Learn how to handle customer criticism, or brace yourself for more reviews like mine. And if you’re thinking about barring me—by all means, go ahead. You’d be doing me a favour.
