Kongs in Cardiff

We attended Kongs Cardiff on 10/07/2021 and ordered three different rum and cola mixers.Upon arrival the waitress did not know which runs were which and left us to guess. Upon trying to rums it was clear that two of the rums contained the correct alcohol as per the order. One drink clearly did not contain any rum and was just Diet Coke.When this was reported to the barman he was very direct and rude and stated that he definitely put rum in the drinks. It wasn’t his fault as he had told the waitress which was which. A second member of our party spoke to another member of staff who said they would speak to the manager / bartender. We were advised that there was nothing that could be done and next time to order a double instead. And that they only thing we could do was to request CCTV footage to prove he poured the rum in.This is a very extreme response and we experienced zero customer service. Any other facility would simply apologise and either add a shot of rum or make a fresh drink. We were told that the company was too small to be able to afford to make everyone new drinks but that she was a small fish in a big pond. Quite frankly, this level of service is disrespectful and as a customer feel completely disregarded. This could have been so easily resolved and we would have happily stayed for more drinks. This has given a terrible impression of that facility and I would certainly not recommend this to anyone.

Absolutely awful service, really rude staff, our waitress was very rude when we did not pay for our drinks within 10 minutes of ordering (even tho they had not brought over the card machine once in that time). Also no atmosphere, would not recommend

Arrogant, rude staff member ruined our experience (think he was the host, however the waitress was lovely) Unfortunately we will never return.

Been here before and enjoyed the beers and experience. However, have just been served by the most passive aggressive waitress I have ever met. You need to order using a QR code, which is totally understandable in the current situation. However, there were 6 of us who all tried several times to use the QR code only to receive error messages after a few minutes trying each time. The waitress wouldn't believe us and made each of spend a few minutes each trying again so that we could show us the error message to prove we weren't lying to her. Not great service when you suggest your customers are lying to you, waste their time and get them to prove one by one that they were telling the truth. Won't be coming back if she still works here!!

App wouldn't work, slow service, flat coke which I could t drink and wasn't offerd a replacement so ordered a bottled ginger beer, waited an hour for two burgers told they went to someone else on accident. Had to ask for an additional portion of fries due to the long wait when really they should have been offered. Burgers were pretty small for a tenner a burger and super greasy couldn't tell it had gone straight from the fryer onto the bun. No napkins offered so had to go wash our hands in the toilets. I know it's the first opening week but we won't be eating there again.

I have been here a few times because the food is really great (mix of British and Korean food). The chicken burger was great, juicy and delicious. I often bring my dog, the staff always offer water and she is made very welcome here.

Aunque la comida era decente por el precio, nos quedamos muy decepcionados por la actitud del personal allí. ¡La limpieza también dejaba mucho que desear, y no había papel higiénico en ninguno de los baños!Hubo una confusión con la mitad de las bebidas ordenadas, y lo mencionamos al personal solo para que nos despidieran por completo y nos dijeran que solo tendríamos que beber lo que nos habían dado. El miembro del personal era innecesariamente grosero y despectivo. Esto dejó un sabor agrio y no hace falta decir que no volveremos.

Was my groups favourite place in the past but lately cant get in with a group of 4 or more. Not sure what has changed but now on the list of places we avoid.

Absolutely gorgeous meal. This is the best meal that we've had in a long time. Sexy fries were amazing. Burgers the best. Can't fault it. Would recommend to anyone! So impressed!

When I was in Cardiff back in December for work, we came here and its been my favourite place so far in Cardiff and completely overdue a return visit. Love bars with an arcade!

Fun bar with pinball machines and 2 x table-tennis tables!!Went for a works do (Llyr's leaving do). Great fun bar, good range of drinks, reasonable prices, c. £5 a pint. Nice staff, keeping the bar, the public areas and the toilets all immaculately clean, which is no small achievement in a busy pub on a Friday night.Went there a year and the vegan burger was superb.

Great range of retro arcade machines and pinball, Double Dragon has gone up in price mind since back in the day... £1 a go 😮 !!!

The place is quirky and as I tend to go afternoons and early evening I have never seen it busy. They have a good selection of beers but I visit for the burgers. They are provided by Burger Theory, originally from Bristol.They are not cheap but compare to other premium burger places. Though they have great combinations I personally feel the meat patties to be the star of the show.Definitely worth a try.

Came here with my husband on the Saturday night of a bank holiday weekend. We arrived earlier than most partiers, which suited me just fine! Pints were a bit on the pricey side (about £5), but there was a good selection to choose from. We each got a burger and shared a side of fries. I had the satay tempeh, which was flavourful, but a little bit on the salty side. My husband's double chicken burger hit the spot. There is a good selection of arcade games, but I thought £1 a play was a bit much. 50p would be more reasonable and would have led to me trying out more games.I can see this place getting a little bit messy later in the night, but worked out for us just fine!

I first heard of Kongs on a night out with work.An underground novelty themed bar which serves food and drink and has a bunch of old retro arcade games.Sounds exciting right?In reality, its an underground 1980's dissused toilet themed bar (heavy on the plywood and graffiti), which serves junk food with a small, poor selection of drinks and a bunch of old knackered gaming machines (that may or may not be working) and a couple of ping pong tables.This bar is situated in one of the busiest streets in Cardiff city centre, from the outside, it looks just like any other but I can attest to the fact it doesn't even compare to other bars along this street. Upon arriving through the door, you are welcomed by a sign portraying the "Donkey Kong" logo from the 80's as you decend the stairs (that was the best bit of the whole experiance).As you decend further, realisation soon dawns that you should make an appointment with your doctor to check up on you vaccinations and how long ago was your last tetanus shot. What awaits you looks like something out of an underground, unlicenced, bareknuckle, sweat pit or an old 80's toilet and the only thing they have done to clean the place up a bit, was to remove the urinals and cobble together a bar out of plywood.The place looks to cater more for the university students of Cardiff, however dont think you'll get charged student prices. at the end of the night, Kongs rated the 2nd highest price paid for the same round of drinks compared to anywere else. Either that or the arrogant, unhelpfull 20+yrs old behind the bar, with an attitude bigger than the moon decided to increase the cost, as a special treat for our group of 10. (it must be pointed out that even after several hours of drinking by a bunch of ex-military blokes, not one member of our party finished their drink due to a "bad Taste" from the pumps)Now dont get me wrong, its not all bad. Once you get past the arrogent bar staff, who sit at the end of the bar passing judgement over everyone like their members of the supreme court and doing there best to ignore you, the very poor selection of bottled urine and gone off stale beer. You'll realise at some point they have a table football machine (which you have to pay to play) to waste a few minutes whilst you choke down your drink and leave.In all Kongs is a perfect example of "how not to do it" and a reminder that there is always something worse out there, although drinking homebrew out of a dirty glass in a back alley dive bar in the middle of a warzone, with terrorists, murderers and thieves comes a close second.

Extensive burger menu but choice was better than the taste of my Christmas one. The cranberry and orange jelly was particularly lingering in taste.Poutine fries were okay - but basically a meal in themselves and cost £7.00! For chips! Like the novelty factor and choice of drinks.Toilets and floors could also be cleaner - think it would be better packed and full of atmosphere (was empty when we went).

If you like a good authentic burger, look no further. I went with a group 12 others and each and everyone enjoyed their burger immensely. The choice is excellent and the ingredients are fresh.I can vouch for the Cheese Theory as this is the one I tried...this time but I will definitely be back to try more from the menu.Service was great and to top it all, they have a lunch menu so it only cost £8.50 for our burgers and fries, which for a top quality burger is excellent.You should try Burger Theory at Kongs, it does amazing burgers!!!

The arcade games and table tennis provide something different but unfortunately the atmosphere and layout seems quite depressing. It’s a shame the blend of fun stuff and a really good bar isn’t quite working.

Came here for the first time a couple of months ago after a suggestion from a friend and the wings and halloumi fries where amazing! Went last night again with two friends, all our food turned up a separate times and all the food was wrong. Friend ordered southern fried chicken and got bought Korean chicken, took it back and got burnt chicken instead. I ordered 4 BBQ wings with two blue cheese sauce, and was brought two loads of hot wings and hot sauce. Took it back and when the replacement was brought the chef had a horrible attitude. If he got it right the first time he wouldn’t have to do it again. Either new management or new staff needed

Went as part of a work group (about 12 of us in total). Burgers are pretty good. Not amazing, but certainly tasty. Lots of different options in the group and everyone seemed happy. The option to double stack is good... but I don't think I really needed it as they're a good size anyway.Lots of IPA/craft ales on, but some poor quality ones. There are no more traditional ales available for example. That's fine, but don't sell yourself (in part) as a real beer type of placeThe place itself is odd. Lots of space and the decor is cold and dark. The arcade games and table tennis are good for a few quick laughs, but when they wear off, so does the appeal of the place. Would call in again for food, but can't see it being a place I'd ever want to stay too long.

I visited Kongs with work as our informal Christmas party. It was great! The food was tasty and very filling, there was a huge choice of beers and we enjoyed the games - especially ping pong. We'd all visit again!

After going in to kongs earlier in the day and asked there is a group of ten and asked would that be an issue with getting in I was told no not any problems with that. Got to the door later that evening and was told by the bouncers that they didn’t do groups. I explained he didnt want to even listen. As we started to walk away we watched a group bigger than ours walk down the steps. Ridiculous really their loss of money but oh well won’t even try it again.

I had high expectations when coming to visit this place because you could drink. Eat burgers AND play arcade machines.We were out for a stag do and tried to fit this place in on our visit. We werent rowdy or the typical stag type. Our stag was dressed with monkey ears and a donkey kong tie.We were refused entry completely! After taking off the monkey ears and tie we were allowed in... In to the world of plyboard and tiles set during the aftermath of a fight with the Avengers and Loki with an army from space.My review wouldnt be so cynical had the bar staff not have treated us like we were somehow interrupting their day.It wasnt busy at all in there so we decided to have vodka and redbull.Except they dont have energy drinks. Or jager. Or jack daniels. Or southern comfort. Or dissaronno. Or amaretto...They do however have a can of ting for £2.40 and other millenial drinks.The food we saw wasnt being brought out very fast with people looking quite underwhelmed whilst eating it so we didnt bother with the food. Instead we just went to go to play the arcades which is pretty much what we came for.We couldnt pose the stag next to the donkey kong machine for a picture (we had to find somewhere else outside in another pub for that!) so i went to play it.It didnt work. The machine wouldnt accept any coins. And the lone bar staff was too occupied to assist!Mortal kombat? Not working. Streetfighter was good but not as you would remember. Its one of those remade ones with the sceeen at such an awkward angle that the whole picture looks grey and washed out. Not very authentic.They have a genuine namco pacman machine with other games on it. The pinball machines (terminator 2. Pirate caribbean. Demolition man) were great as you would expect.Outrun 2.. not working.There were other machines there but most of these werent originals or exact replicas so if you are looking for that trip down memory lane then you will notice these details and for me it takes away some of the magic of nostalgia.The theme of kongs makes no sense since its mostly plyboard. Large hunks of wood and apart from the sign outside theres no reason for it to be called kongs.As you can see in a picture ive uploaded the table football area looks like a scene from Saw rather.Any atmosphere in there was killed by the staff. If all they had in there was a ball on a string if people were happy in there and staff were happy you were there then thats all you need.Even with arcade machines this place looks like its going to be game over pretty soon. They even have that written on the stairs as you leave.I am passionate about retro games so i am coming at this more cynically than most but just adding in the whole unwelcoming feeling to it makes me just fill with rage that retro games are represented in such a drab and unprofessional way.Dont travel to cardiff just to see this place, certainly dont dress up in cosplay.I dont imagine halloween being very much fun in here. Except for the Saw themed table football.Dreadful representation of retro gaming.

Lazy, no effort, no drinks, terrible atmosphere. Surprised it's allowed to be open. Should be game over for this place.

Visited here for the first time on the weekend, and was bitterly disappointed. Rude manager, waited over an hour for food as they lost the order, then when I asked for a refund from the manager on shift, was given back the wrong amount of money, including an old one pound coin, which isn’t even legal money now!?! Would never return. On departure, the manager thought it would be acceptable to speak down to my friend and embarrass her. I wish I could give minus stars!!! Awful.

I really want to recommend Burger Theory as the burgers are delicious but the customer service, or lack thereof, is awful. I've been twice and won't be returning. The first time, on a quiet Tuesday, we waited over an hour for our burgers. Most recently, we went using a Wriggle, and were told straight off that might be a problem, and then not told what the problem with that was. After our first experience, this time we asked how long the wait would be and the barman went straight to the kitchen to check and told us 10-15 minutes. Half hour later we still didn't have our food. As opposed to the first time, a ticket collection system was put in place that just didn't work. I gave the guy at the kitchen my number, he looked at me and went straight back into the kitchen with no acknowledgement of if my food was ready or or how long it would be. My boyfriend went back later to try again and only knew it was ready because other customers waiting told him, the kitchen didn't call out the number again. A poor girl had been waiting over an hour and her number was 30 ahead of ours. I'm not sure why they are putting a Wriggle deal on if they can't,or don't want to, cope with customers. We felt a complete lack of warmth from staff and like we were an inconvenience. The two businesses, Kong's and Burger Theory, should be compatible, but the latter would do well to pull out and focus on customer service. You might get people in but treating customers so poorly won't get them back, and it certainly won't be third time's the charm for us.

Worst experience ever! I go to kongs in Bristol all the time and wanted to show my friends in Cardiff how great it was! Not only did our burgers take an HOUR but when I went to the till to ask for a refund stating that we had to be somewhere else and wouldn’t have time to eat our food, the manager got all of our refunds wrong. After staying behind with my two friends who HAD received their food (while the rest of my group left) upon asking for a drink of water before leaving the manager had the audacity to rudely state “I thought you had to BE SOMEWHERE?” Worst experience ever, none of my group will be coming back and shocked at the manners of the staff/manager!!!!

Came here with my transgender friend and was told they couldn't serve us as my friend was in 'Fancy Dress' had to go back to get changed to be allowed to get served

Came on the recommendation of a friend and had the down n dirty burger, cheese theory burgee and dirty fries with Kong's Silverback session IPA. Everything was absolutely stunning, service was fast and the waiters were friendly. The vibe is very cool, casual and bang on trend. Didn't play any of the archade games as we didn't have cash on us but will definitely be heading back again soon!

Driest wings I’ve ever had. Food delivered to our table with 20 mins in between. Would have given zero stars, but not an option.

Beer selection decent, food woeful.6 dishes ordered to the same table, at the same time. Food delivered one hour apart. Burgers sloppy, bread disintegrated. Chicken nuked, dry, and largely inedible. No sauce as denoted on the menu. Onion rings just overdone batter. Really, really awful.

Been to Kongs on many occasions where I have enjoyed the large range of drinks, music and table tennis. Lots of arcade machines also to add to the laughs. The bar is downstairs which already makes it cool and has the interior to suit that. Tried a burger there the other day also which was lovely, pleasantly surprised!

Great food. Korean style fries and burgers to die for. Extensive selection of solid beers. Highly recommend to anyone wanting decent food and drinks.

Wow sexy burgers. Got a Deliveroo from Kongs of x2 burgers and fries. Pretty pricey but 100% worth it. I had the tofu and quinoa burger and it was the best experience of my life to eat such a delicious burger in bed. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger too, can't remember what he had. AND we ordered a san pelligrino pomegranate and that was flippin' lush too, and I haven't seen it anywhere since.

80s/early 90s Arcade machines, ping-pong tables and fussball, mixed with shabby-chic interior, cool lighting and contemporary music. What's not to like?This is a pretty cool bar on Cardiff's High Street/St. Mary's Street. If you're a gamer, this place is nostalgia summed up. It has a very nice atmosphere whether at lunch or in the evening. The food by Burger Theory is extremely nice and the burgers are pretty huge, good value for money. The drinks though, are on the slightly more expensive side of Cardiff bars - to be expected based on location though!The owners may have spent a bare-minimum on the aesthetic, but damn it works really well. It is a popular place, but not overcrowded - that's because it's been designed very well and kept open-plan.

Kongs is cool - really simplistic in it's appearance, but with loads of old arcade games, pinball machines and table tennis for the more energetic types it's a nice spot for a drink.Although I never had a burger on my visit, Burger Theory is a top protagonist when it comes to the cow stuffed in buns and imagine what's on offer here is top notch.There's a good choice of drinks, although I was sad the Blue Moon was off on the night I went. Nevertheless, a decent spot that keeps me one step away from the old man pubs!I'll be looking forward to my next visit :)

We loved the burgers here, the atmosphere and the service. The prices were good and we spent quite a bit of time playing table tennis and the arcade games.

I used to frequent Kong's fairly regularly. This is until management has decided to unfairly discriminate against me as a "male" and refused to let me and my 3 "male" friends in. We're all local, regular customers and we had not even had a single drink on the night. We had a meal booking in next door (Turtle Bay) at 8pm and just wanted to have a quick one in Kong's. The rude door staff explained that management didn't want "people like us" in their bar.I'll never be recommending Kong's Cardiff again, and I'll forever be taking my custom elsewhere.

I was in Cardiff and had a hankering for a burger. I did a quick bit of research and found this place. It is described as a restaurant, but it is actually a bar that serves burgers and other similar food.The venue is pretty cool. at 46 though I am not hip enough anymore for a plywood constructed bar, industrial furniture, table tennis and pinball machines!They have a great selection of beers, the burger was substantial & delicious, and they don't scrimp of the fries either. All served on a metal tray with an enamel bowl for the fries, plus lots of various sauces ... all delivered quickly too.I really enjoyed it here and would go back. It was a Monday and so it was very quiet. I suspect this place is heaving at the weekends.

Visited Kongs during a lunchtime. We ordered the KFC burger which I must say is amazing and the dirty fries (comes with bbq sauce, pulled ham and cheese). The service was quick and everything was piping hot! We finished our lunch with a quick game of table tennis. Would highly recommend this place!

I called into kongs with a friend. We had a beer and decided to eat. I have to say, hands down, the best burger I have ever had. The food arrived quickly, delivered by an enthusiastic chef who described the ingredients. All of the ingredients are home made! Even the gherkins! The burger was cooked perfectly! Medium rare. The home made satay was incredible. Easily the best burger I have ever tasted. I followed up by a Home made cheesecake. It was heaven on a plate. I cannot recommend kongs enough. The time, effort and dedication put into a burger is outstanding. Compliments to the chef.

Absolutely love this place! Amazing selection of beer, craft ales and some great classic retro arcade machines along with ping pong tables. Plus a awesome selection of delicious burgers from burger theory.

We had really really good burgers here, definitely recommend the KFC, fab! A little pricey so a wriggle offer is a cheeky recommendation for foodies everywhere. Games are fun as well, there's ping pong, table football and old school arcade games. It's an underground bar and an industrial look to it, but still great for a catch up with a friend or a group.

We went just to try the burgers by Burger Theory and we were not disappointed. We were the only people in the place but it was 4 o'clock and was filling up as we left. The three of us ordered different burgers and no complaints from any of us. For sides we went for fries, onion rings and dirty fries, again making the mistake of ordering too much food. The dirty fries were a meal unto themselves and the onion rings magnificent. It is not the cheapest of burgers but they were exceptional, so worth treating yourself. We will definitely be returning and hopefully visiting Burger Theory Bristol

This is a big basement bar with plenty of room for groups. Great choice of beers. There are table tennis tables, old arcade games. The arcade games were £1 and we all had a good time playing these. Really nice atmosphere with comfortable seating (sofas) as well as barstool type tables. Would definitely be going back here. Service was swift on a saturday night and it wasnt crowded by any means.

I've heard mixed reviews about this place so I thought I'd try it out for myself. Fantastic little gem! Loads of old school arcade games and free table tennis (with a £5 deposit). Well worth the visit!

Visited here with my boyfriend who had been here for a Burger Theory burger a few times. I had the KFC and he had the one with chicken and beef (can't remember the name) both burgers were really good. I had some of his and the hot sauce with the blue cheese was perfect. We ordered chipa and onion ringa to share but were much too full to eat them.My only grip was that the walls are very dirty. The whole places looks a bit underground and grimy but I would come back for the food.

My boyfriend and I shared a Korean Fried Chicken and a Blue Cow burger. They were both absolutely delicious. So much flavour and a great combination of textures. Being able to choose the bun type was new one for me too! (We went with brioche) Drinks were a little pricey and the burgers would have been if we hadn't used Wriggle (worth a download for Cardiff foodies!) but I would go again and again for those burgers.

The burgers were really tasty. Excellent vegetarian options. Great value, fantastic rainy day activity. Classic games such as Pac Man and Donkey Kong. Casual atmoshphere, lovely and friendly. The best burgers we've had in a very, very long time. No exaggeration ! We'll be back.

I've been here a couple of times now, it's somewhere I take friends from outside of Cardiff as it's a bit unusual and quirky. On a weekday it's better as at least the table tennis is free; Friday - Sunday it's £5 for 30 minutes which is a bit expensive especially considering it's nothing special.There's so much room for cool retro arcade games and consoles. What's currently there is a limited selection of a few arcade games. It's also quite dark and dingy and the beers are pricey.Unless they up their game and introduce more games I'm not sure I'll go back. Especially considering there's Brewdog round the corner that has far more beers, an N64 plus board games!

Kong's is a great place to chill with your mates and indulge in top quality burger and fries. I find myself coming back here before I go out in the night in Cardiff, it has awesome vibes brought along by friendly staff, arcade games and foooooozball.

Came here for lunch with some friends. The burgers are fantastic, some of the best in Cardiff. Loved the arcade machines. My only feedback is that it's a little dark in there and could use a few more games machines as I got round pretty quick.

Only stopped here on a saturday afternoon for a couple of drinks and a few games. The drinks selection was pretty good, though if you're just after a normal lager, you might struggle as the selection does edge on the pretentious end of the spectrum. It was fairly quiet when I got there, with maybe another 5 - 10 people in the place. The arcade machines.The decor is of the 'distressed industrial' variety which appears to be so trendy nowadays. Naked chipboard paneling, old ceramic tiling and an actually great idea to stack palletised water butts with lights in them to create a feature wall.Despite not eating there and the drinks being a bit pricey, the free games I played made it a great visit and I'll be sure to stick my nose in to see if I can have a repeat performance in the future.

My partner and I came here for some food before heading to the cinema and I ended up wanting to come back to spend more time here! The bar itself has a rustic quality and had been adorned with some of the best arcade machines of yesteryear such as Pacman, Outrun, Mortal Kombat ( to name just a few).The drinks are a bit on the pricey side for my taste however the food was fab. The menu consists of gourmet burgers from the wonderful grill of Burger Theory who have a place within Kongs. Large portions galore too! I was particularly impressed with the inventiveness of their vegetarian options too. Over all I dare you to try this place and not want to stay to play all the arcades! Great fun place to hang out with friendly and helpful staff.

Great venue though unfortunately the staff on the day had obvious bias against men. The staff's behaviour was borderline hate crime and would not be tolerated against any other group. We politely left when asked to do so. It's a shame that in such a progressive City like Cardiff there is still so much intolerance.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ordered on Deliveroo, arrived on time, no description on the take away boxes, no receipt, WRONG BUNS -wholemeal seeded buns rather than brioche buns. When i rang them i had the pleasure to speak to a clueless young man ( from the Bristol Burger Theory, not from Cardiff) that did not put any effort to solve the issue so I hung up the phone as soon as i felt the need to say some nasty words because i wanted to stay classy!BURGERS: All we could taste was black pepper. There were literally chunks of black pepper in the patty. I think this is the BEST WAY TO COVER THE TASTE OF ROTTEN MEAT! The bacon was gummy, the cheese watery, and the bun soggy.It is not because of financial crisis that businesses fail, but because little attention is paid to customer service or in some cases, companies simply offer a bad product or a service. When the Cardiff venue will shut down, and i bet it will if things do not change, Burger Theory will be an interesting business failure case study

I'll admit that I haven't looked at the whole price list of drinks (I couldn't easily spot one, but I'm sure it must have been there somewhere), but £5.50 for a pint of draught beer is a bit steep! The burger menu looked really good and I've heard nothing but good things about Burger Theory. The interior design of Kong's is best described as 'basic', plywood featuring heavily. The old skool games are fun, but with those beer prices, I just wouldn't spend more than an hour there. Shame.

Like the title says, overrated. The old school arcade games were cool, but overpriced; the food was pretty good, but overpriced; the drinks incredibly overpriced; most of the staff looked and acted like they were there under duress. The music was way too loud for somewhere that seems to want to be a hangout place, after about 30mins it got really annoying having to shout to my friends to have a convo. After all the hype I was hoping for something more.
