A 2 min drive from our holiday let and a great experience. Saturday early evening dinner with our dog. Friendly and welcoming staff. Comfortable seating in a beautiful location. The food was served quickly and was freshly cooked. Pigeon and black pudding starter, steak, and fish mains plus a couple of fantastic puddings. Almost perfect (the medium rare steak was closer to medium well) meal and I would happily recommend to anyone in tgee area.

Set on the edge of the loch we chanced upon this amazing gem. The staff including Chef Huda were brilliant. The food superb, soups, risotto and salmon outstanding. Wines great esp the Claret. Beautiful views, lovely wood panelled dining room, light and bright and delicate. Furniture exquisite. Service perfect. It was perfect in every respect. Although we are from NZ we will return and stay here. Highly commended. Tom. Thank you sincerely.

The waiter and staff here couldn't have been more helpful. They even gave me venison when I asked which wasn't on the menu and tasted fantastic. They had a good selection of local whiskys and the waiter shared his extensive whisky knowledge with us. He was more like a maitre de from a top London restaurant. The dining room gave a sense of the history of the manor and our table gave us a great view over the loch. The food and service were 5 star !

My partner and I ate in the restaurant just the other day during our holiday to the Highlands. We were staying in the hotel and headed down in the evening for a meal - It was delicious. My partner is pescatarian and had plenty of choice, we needed up going for 3x courses each. I had a prawn risotto to start and lamb for my main, both great. My partner had Goat’s Cheese starter and a main I can’t remember. For dessert I had a giant drambuiemisu. Overall, all the food was lovely. Service was equally good, staff were attentive and the atmosphere was perfect for a quiet evening meal. Only minor complaint from me was the lack of a bit of beer variety, the Belhaven Bitter being on tap not cask, but that really is nitpicking.

Despite COVID restrictions preventing alcohol with meals, this is very good. The menu for dinner, without being over long had too many dishes that looked enticing. I had a potato and quinoa roulade to start with while my partner had ham hock terrine with a crispy egg. Mains were a cannon of lamb and red mullet. All carefully prepared and beautifully presented. I had a soufflé for desert which was clearly made to order. Absolutely excellent.

I stayed overnight at this hotel and had the wonderful experience of breakfast. Piping hot - local ingredients - cooked to perfection. It was the most amazing way to start the day. The dining room is impeccably decorated in keeping with its history. An inviting log fire was lit which was the perfect accompaniment to dining. The bedroom was immaculately clean and tastefully decorated. I had had a long day's travel when I arrived and the airport had lost my luggage. The hotel kindly allowed me to have a late check out so I could rest and recuperate before hitting the road. I am very much looking forward to returning. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Meal for two on a Saturday evening. Restaurant was quietist but couple of staff on hand.Food was lovely, the haggis for starter and beef + gnocchi for mains with a bottle of Malbec. The wine wasn’t great tasting for the price but the food was rich and just as expected for its reputation.I asked the staff to explain the different cuts of beef to me, which wasn’t done as initially promised (had to go away and ask “chef”) but apart from that the experience was lovely as we were allowed to sit and relax after our meal.

We visited recently for Sunday lunch. The staff were all welcoming and very helpful - accommodating our two year old with no hassle whatsoever. Food was delicious - my husband particularly enjoyed his game casserole. I loved the ice-cream at the end, really tasted homemade (not sure if it was, but it tasted that way!).Beautiful grounds and a very well-kept property inside. Big bonus was the beautiful and gentle Border Collie, Rosie, whom we all enjoyed making a fuss of - if you're not a dog person, don't worry, she is very well behaved and wouldn't approach you I don't think.

Terrible service. Made a reservation enquiry online for Sunday lunch- heard nothing. Called them, no answer so left a voicemail- heard nothing. Called again, someone answered so we booked a table for two, Sunday lunch as a birthday treat. Just returned home. The Sunday lunch menu advertised online wasn't available, the menu was totally different and limited. Planned on a three course dinner ended up having just the mains and left still hungry.Made the staff aware we visited for the Sunday lunch and asked if the Sunday lunch menu was available but unfortunately all they could say was sorry but what is on the website is wrong.... very disappointed from start to finish it was a poor show- not what you expect from a country house charging these prices. We will now be going to the cafe in kilcreggan to get a desert!

We had dinner here one night when we were staying in the hotel. The food was well cooked and there was a lovely selection on the menu- but the portions were quite small. We'd had a long day of walking, but even so it's unusual for me (Nearly 5ft tall) to be hungry after a meal!! The dining room is clean and well maintained but something feels a bit dated about it. What a fab hotel. My friend and I had booked afternoon tea today. We were met at the door and we were escorted to the dining room. We chose to sit in the bay window providing lovely views over loch long. When the afternoon tea came there was enough to feed a family. The sandwiches had mixed fillings and were delicious. The scone was presented with clotted cream and home made jam , mouthwatering. And then the cakes, well what can i say , there was great variety and each one looked lovelier than the last. Needless to say we could not eat everything because there was so much. The manager gave us a wee tour of the public rooms which were beautiful . She was so friendly, as was the waitress. Who informed us that a whale had been spotted in the loch. At the end of our tea the items we could not eat were wrapped up for us to take home. The whole experience was excellent. I would encourage anyone to experience it for themselves. One word of advise , it's advisable to book at least 24 hrs in advance.

My partner and I stayed at the wonderful Knockderry House for 3 nights on a full board basis and we were more than delighted with our experience. The food was simply incredible. A fantastic menu choice, not over complicated yet fine in presentation and served in a timely manner. All our dishes were first class from Lamb, Pheasant and Lobster to traditional Turkey Ballotine dinner and all washed down with fabulous Sauvignon Blanc - after a G&T and a pint of real ale in the cosy Drawing Room of course. One of our favourites was the Haddock Gratin starter which packs a punch and an ideal warmer for the time of year. Full Scottish Breakfast was a real treat - succulent sausages, lean bacon, home made tattie cake, black pudding and a poached egg with the most incredibly sunshine yellow thick yolk. We couldn't fault the food and drink at all. We have dined in many places and I have to say, Knockderry is absolutely up there with the very best that we have experienced. Lovely setting, friendly and attentive staff, and a very good meal. What seem quite small portions are actually beautifully proportioned (although the Scallops starter proved to be a Scallop starter, but nevertheless delicious). We enjoyed the lamb, Hake and Fillet Beef mains and they were spot on. Lovely vibrant and imaginative desserts too. I had the cheese - nice home made oat cakes, only criticism was the cheese was a bit chilled - not really good enough.A little delay for coffee, but we'd eaten early and things were by now busy. Had it been a fixed price lunch of around £20 per head it would have been fine but it was nearer £70 for soup & burgers & one glass of wine. The location is stunning as is the hotel itself. A bit chilly to be honest & we never really heated up. Not much choice only one starter of tomato soup - can use sides though as starters of sorts. My sweet was cool inside and burnt on top - nice touch using a blow torch but the desert needs to be heated through 1st. Been for dinner before which was excellent so just an off day perhaps.

The staff are all warm and friendly and the service is excellent. As for the food, if you like fresh local produce beautifully prepared then you are in for a treat.

Knockderry has great staff who are very friendly and down to earth. The food is excellent and worth a visit on its own, there is a decent wine list and my husband enjoyed the two real ales on offer. On our two visits we have stayed in the library suite which is possibly the best room in the hotel split into entrance hallway, bathroom and living room with fantastic views out across the loch. All in all we have really enjoyed both visits to knockderry and would highly recommend.

Great location, terrible staff and manager, I would love to go back if it were nore fore the staff and the food which was overpriced for food cooked by untrained staff who were following a recipe from a book.

We stayed in the Knockderry House before Beth and Murdo took it over. Then we loved the location, but not the hotel so we bought a home just down the road. Now the hotel is transformed and I wish I had the excuse to stay overnight, however we do enjoy going for meals. The food has always been wonderful and they cater for extreme dietary requirements. When I was put on a very weird diet by my surgeon, I asked if they would be able to cope with it. Not only was the answer yes (this was one of those diets where the "banned" list included many of the ingreients of a "healthy" meal - they just were not good for me at the time). Not only was teh answer 'yes", Beth investigated the diet and offered me a selection of wonderful dishes I could eat.Now that I have to be gluten free, this is a restaurant I know will be able to provide me with GF sandwiches and treats. Thank you.

This restaurant is quite close to where I live and so usually fades into the background for me when thinking of going out for dinner. But no longer. We went on a spur of the moment type thing as it was a nice evening and we needed to get out for a bit. The location is great and the service excellent as usual. What did surprise us was the quality & presentation of the food. It was superb! Apparently there is a new chef and he really knows how to make the "first bite with the eye" count. Remember to leave room for the sweet, even if you know you shouldn't.

We were staying at Hotel and for convenience booked the first night. It was so good, from the fish to the Eton Mess that we immediately booked for a second night. A lot of care and attention has gone into the quality of the restaurant, and even though it may be considered out of the way it is definitely worth driving to.

We took family here after Christmas. The staff were great with the kids and the food was beautiful and well priced considering the skilled cooking and the fresh ingredients. I'm looking forward to the next special occasion so we can try some more of the menu.

I visited here with a large group of friends, 10 of us in total. We visited for a meal and were not disappointed. The building is wonderful and very welcoming.. We were seated in a secluded room on a large table with views across the loch. The service was fantastic and I would recommend going for romantic breaks or popping n for a drink. Very welcoming and atmospheric!

We stopped in at the Knockderry on a trip to Kilcreggan. The weather was great and the 40 minute drive from Glasgow was amazing even in February. The restaurant has wonderful views across the loch and is in a peaceful setting. The staff are friendly and helpful and the bar has a lovely welcoming log fire. The lunch menu is quite traditional and the food high quality beautifully cooked. My only slightly negative comment is that the portions are not huge so if you are the type who likes to see a plate piled high be warned. I would definitely come back here maybe for dinner with an overnight stay.

We have eaten at Knockderry on numerous occasions over the last 10 years since we moved up to Scotland. It's always our first port of call for any special occasion or celebration as we love it! The beautiful country house has been lovingly and painstakingly restored with great attention to detail and the owners Murdo and Beth work constantly to keep standards high. The country house hotel has its own unique style and it has a wonderful setting on the banks of Long Long with stunning views across the water. Laura, the hotel manager is always extremely welcoming and professional as are the rest of the staff.Occasionally we stay overnight at the hotel and enjoy Dinner, Bed and Breakfast and the rooms are all tastefully and individually decorated with a lovely period feel. On this occasion my husband and I were there for Valentine's night and the food was delicious as always. We had a glass of bubbly to start and the Valentine's menu was superb. All in all another fabulous evening at Knockderry.

I had reviewed the Knockderry some time back and thought it was one of the best places to go to eat and stay within the area. Unfortunately something seems to have gone very wrong with the place. Since i was last there about a year ago they seem to have either replaced the chef or he has gone seriously off the boil. I was in Scotland last week and was really looking forward to going to this place for lunch to have some great food and enjoy the lovely bar and restaurant. When we got the menu for lunch the description of the food was, as it had been in the past, very understated. This is fine with me with what sounds like quite simple food being really beautifully prepared and served. However, the understated menu wasn’t that it was actually just boring descriptions of equally boring food. Two people in my party had the hake tempura which turned up as tiny anaemic fillets of fish and some chips in soggy batter. Another two had the rump steak which was so thin i think it might need to have been cut by a laser, considering it was so thin it was a bit of a joke to be asked how i wanted it cooked considering it could realistically only come out well done. All of this would have been slightly bearable if it was a cheap place to go and eat but at £21.95 for three courses it was a lot of money for really poor food and service. The restaurant only had one other table occupied when we were there but the service was still really slow and rather haphazard which culminated in me having to go and find the waitress to ask for the bill, she was sitting in the reception behind the desk and looked like i was interrupting her to ask for this. When we were leaving we again had to go past the reception with the ever helpful waitress behind it, i don’t expect an effusive explosion of gratitude for my patronage but i do expect some sort of acknowledgement of my presence. When the five of us where standing next to the waitress i said goodbye and thanks, in return i got a nice nothing. In the end when we were leaving we were the only people in the place, the way things are going i can see that carrying on for here

Having just returned from a 2 night stay at Knockderry House I am moved to say that this was one of the best short breaks I have ever had. The accommodation was excellent and the staff and owners even better. We were made to feel so welcome from start to finish and our every need catered for. Murdo and Beth, the owners, had time for all of their guests and Fraser was service personified. The breakfast was excellent and catered so well for vegetarians. Thanks to all for making our weekend in Scotland so enjoyable.Paul & Catherine Henderson/Miller

Smaak van het eten was wel aardig maar het geheel was erg weinig om voor een volwaardige maaltijd door te gaan. Via de bediening was hier ook niet iets aan te doen. De ambiance was prima. De bediening wat "overdone" stijlvol.

I had the pleasure of eating here several times during my stay at the hotel - and noticed that all of the restaurant reviews are on the hotel's page and not this one! So I feel I must add a comment here.Breakfasts were just stunning - I opted for the full Scottish every day. I ordinarily hate black pudding but they obviously source theirs from somewhere outstanding - I could have eaten a whole plate of it! And the potato scone/pancake that came with the breakfast was fantastic. Nice coffee and lovely miniature pastries too. An impressive spread to start the day.As for lunch, I had outstanding mussels - the biggest and juiciest I have ever encountered! The bread was amazing (something I can be very fussy about) and the service was incredibly warm and courteous. Dinner was out of this world. The place is so wonderful in the evening, with candles, lovely music and roaring fires - so snug and intimate. I opted for steak as I often do and it was cooked to perfection. We asked for wine recommendations (the wine list was very impressive) and those suggested were spot on. Totally impressed by this place. The building itself is in outstanding condition and has been furnished by a real pro - traditional but very comfortable and welcoming. I indulge in a lot of fine dining at home in London, and have travelled far and wide to sample highly rated cuisine, and so I suppose I have become quite difficult to please, but this place had the whole package. Stunning.

We stopped by this historic hotel because the tourism brochure we had been given contained an ad for this establishment specifically advertising its homemade baking and afternoon teas. First of all, when we arrived, we felt like we were intruding. The staff were rude at best, and looked at us like we were crazy to be inquiring about afternoon tea at 3 pm. He said, "No, we don't do that, but we could probably do a scone or something if that's what you want." That should have been our clue to leave, but we stayed, and were served a freezer-burned, definitely NOT homemade scone...the worst I think we've ever had, in Canada, the UK or Australia. The final straw was when we received our bill...for this horrible scone and one cup of tea, we were charged over 6 pounds per person! When we questioned this, thinking there must be an error, we were told it's their price and that it's a fair price because they do their own baking! I've had any number of scones that far exceeded their quality for a third or less of the price, and served by far more friendly waitstaff. Please ignore the tourism brochures and DO NOT attend this overrated hotel.

My wife and I took my son to this Hotel for dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. What a let down! Beautiful surroundings and the hotel is or was having some building work done. We ordered two steaks well done and a burger meal for our child. When they brought out the meal our son's burger arrived and only one steak. The waitress had forgotten to add the two steaks to the order! So they left one meal and said the other would be with us soon! I suggested they keep mine warm and bring it with the other steak. Within 5 mins we got served with the steaks. This is the quickest well done steak ive ever seen! I got the new one, my wife got the original. Mine was RAW! yes raw inside, not rare, RAW! My sons burger was made from beef mince and that was even pink inside also.I sent my meal back and didnt take up the offer of another one. The bill! well, all they took off was the rib eye that was sent back! Total bill for one rib eye steak with frozen fires that were so sharp they'd cut the inside of your mouth and an overdone salad, kids burger with wedges, 3 lemonades and a glass of wine, £32 ( $64 ) !!! Dick Turpin wore a mask when he ripped folk off!

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.
