We were staying in a nearby Airbnb and popped down to the bar for a couple of drinks. We were pleasantly surprised with the experience. Cozy little country pub vibe. Drinks were a decent price, good selection of gins, and a nice pint of Tennent’s. Playing pool and darts was brilliant. Didn’t realise they had these, but ended up being one of the best parts of our trip.

Came here with a friend and our 3 dogs for the weekend and was not disappointed. We were running extremely late but nothing was too much trouble . We was met outside by the manager , who kindly had put on all the heating for us as it was cold . Showed us around ,the 3 bedroom apartment we stayed in was spotless , beautiful and very well equipped with everything you need and more . Beds were extremely comfortable and everything was well made up . The whole stay was total bliss and relaxing . Both the mangers ( sorry forgot the names ) and the owners were so friendly , accommodating , welcoming snd was happy to help with everything, such lovely people. We went out th r first day and was given some suggestions and local knowledge by the manager , which was extremely helpful . When we came back it was very late but they kindly still let us order food . And we was not disappointed. The food was spot on and plenty of it , we sat in the dining area which was stunning and the manger came in and placed wood on the fire to warm it up . The views from out window were stunning and just a short walk from the grounds is loch awe which we took the dogs down for walks and they loved it . All in all , couldn’t have been more impressed with our stay here , everyone , everything was Absolutely amazing and would highly recommend and will definitely be busting again and again when I go back to Scotland .

The second time, we have stayed just up the road to Ardbrecknish. Lovely friendly owners and barman. The bar is very cosy and a great way of meeting all the people who are passing. The menu is limited, but the food is great (please make the fish portion a little bigger and charge the little extra) Restaurant has a good space with open fires, but I think the area could do with a little TLC just to make it a bit more warmly. Overall, it was a great lovely place with some lovely views of Ben Cruachan. Would definitely recommend it.

Went for dinner on a Sunday evening. Very disappointing. Beautiful building from the outside, lifeless on the inside. Only one person serving attending the bar and cooking. Reminiscent of Fawlty Towers. Menu on line is not accurate meal options missing. Incredibly expensive and below average food. I don’t mind paying if the food is good but a small bowl of Mac and cheese swimming in oil and a small portion of cooked frozen chips for £13 is over the top. My suggestion would be, stay at home and have a toasted cheese sandwich or pot noodle if that’s all that is in the cupboard.

Arrived by car and thought the place looked nice from the outside, but is just a dingy bar on the inside. Purpose of the visit was for takeaway, and immediately the interaction with the man taking the order didn’t fill me with trust. While we waited we had a drink at the bar which was ok. We were told the order would take a while which was fine as it seemed quite busy. However, on receipt of our food we were shocked at the poor quality of it and the extremely small portions. It looked like they made one portion of mac and cheese and split it between 6. To top it off the price was £75 for 3 mac and cheese, 3 kids size mac and cheese, chicken wings and steak pie. £75! Absolute rip off and I feel robbed and taken advantage of because there wasn’t any other takeaway place near. I would avoid it you can.

We have just got home from a couple of days staying at this hotel that we used during Andrea Masons successful record attempt swimming Loch Awe. For extended families or social groups I doubt that there is a better place to book, quality self catering accommodation, walking distance to the Loch and Loch Awe Boat yard. It is a fisherman’s dream. The bar and menu at the hotel has a real community feel to it with locals happy to share “the one that got away stories” Saving the best to last, Owner Sarah is a credit to her trade and she could not have done more for us - thank you so much.

Wow! what a welcome received here on a couple of visits. Good pub, decent selection of beers and some good conversation from staff and locals. Made very welcome considering we had never been here before and were made to feel like we had been going there day-in day-out for years. This is how it should be in these country pubs(Other places take note). Okay, that's welcome covered lets get onto the food. Quite a good selection of food was on offer with a daily special. I opted fer the steak-pie and the Mrs opted fer the fish & chips. After a very little weight 'the Moll' received what can only be described as 'A Battered Whale atop a corbett of chips' Aye-oops I thought I made a mistake here however my steak-pie arrived on a platter which was probably obtained from a local pottery rather than any Crockery retailer. Steak was cooked to perfection and as tender as an 'Aberdeen Angus calf that had been reared on a diet of the best corn'. served with veg and chips which were eagerly competing for space on said platter. If like me you enjoy food and are a 'Fb' you will wan't to go back here day after day. Ironically we did go back the next evening where I nearly got steak-pie again but opted for the fish & chips and the Mrs opted for the house curry which she tore into like 'a hungry hill-walker who had been lost fer a week with no rations'. To say she enjoyed it is akin to saying Scot's enjoy a day's sun. My fish and chips however was just as good as the wife's from the night b4. The fish couldn't have been long out of the sea and was probably a resident of Oban Bay a few hours before. Thankfully it had eluded capture fer a few years and was broader than an American football player. Covered in a nice beer batter and cooked to perfection by Iain the chef and washed down by an nice ale after a hearty brisk walk in the invigorating Scottish weather(Teeming Rain). life doesn't get better. Loved the wee snug bar and the dogs as well as the crazy spaniels. NB: Special mention to chef Iain(hope this is right spelling) for going above and beyond the call of duty. THX M8.

Open from 6pm for meals, this is a hidden gem! A good 5 minutes down a single track road, Ardbrecknish welcomes children and dogs. The food is standard pub fayre but to a really good standard. We took our puppy so were seating in the back room where pets are allowed. It is quite small so can get cozy if there are a few diners with dogs. I chose the haggis stuffed chicken, and it was amazing! The staff are really friendly and welcoming and there’s a small play area too which kept my daughter occupied until the food arrived. I’d recommend this place for anyone wanting a quick but very tasty tea in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

Jim and Sally were very welcoming and helpful. Bruce (barman) and the locals (including Cliff from Loch Awe boat hire) were very friendly. We stayed here in the Study for a week in September 2018 and it was very relaxing. We didn't have the best week weather wise but this didn't stop us enjoying ourselves. Food and drinks in the bar were very good (a great choice of whiskies). Some nice walks from the house and Oban, Kilmartin, and Inverary are all within 1 hours drive and are well worth visiting. We enjoyed playing carpet bowls one day when the weather was so bad we didn't want to leave the house, Jim also advised us that because the bar does not open until 6PM we could take our own drinks into the bar.

My wife and I stayed in the Upper Tower of Ardbrecknish House for a week-long holiday on Loch Awe. The accommodation was relaxed with beautiful views of the loch and we ended each evening with a meal and a drink or two in the bar. The staff at the bar (which, on some nights was Sally, the owner) were friendly and attentive and the patrons were quick to welcome us and make us feel at home. Ian did a fine job preparing our meals. My wife favoured the chicken wings, but i went for the pork with stilton. This was exactly what we had hoped we would find in this tucked away little spot along Loch Awe. We can't wait to return, hopefully next year.

Beautiful location and such lovely and friendly staff make this place worth a visit. We really wanted to like the food more but it was quite disappointing unfortunately. My son and I had the sirloin steak which was really tough and mine was overcooked for a rare steak. The chips were nice though! My mum had the steak pie. She said the meat was very nice, but there was an odd piece of puff pastry sat on top that looked more like a bread roll! We got a chocolate cake for dessert which again I really wanted to like but it wasn't good. Very dry and not tasty. I wish I could have left a better review for the food but what we had really wasn't up to much. But the place itself is fautless. The landlord was great sitting with us and recommending places for us to visit. Would love to consider their self catering cottages for another holiday, but would give the restaurant a miss next time.

Part of Arbrecknish Holiday Rentals this restaurant is a small piece of heaven where guests, locals and tourists from nearby establishments come on a regular basis . I eat here almost every night I stay as there is such a good variety of dishes you can never complain of lack of choice although the pork in leek and stilton sauce is a real favourite of mine and the fish and chips are a winner. We had noticed this place going to and from our hotel at Portsonachan, when say noticed I really mean the sign as the building itself is mostly hidden from the road.We went in about seven o clock in the evening, on the right as you enter you have a large dinning area, with a large open fireplace and a fire ablaze warming the room. By the looks of it the room also doubles as as games room as you have a pool table, dart board and indoor skittle alley, although none of these are allowed to take place whilst food is being served after six in the evening. At the back of this room you have what is more like a snug than a bar area, whilst small it was more than adequate. It a had a lovely log burner going in one corner and had a good homely feel to it, which was made even better by the nice reception we received from those already seated in the room and Sally who whilst serving you drinks also runs the business. After a few drinks and placing our order in the bar we were shown to our table by a very pleasant lady called Kirsty. We were only sat for a short while when our meals which on this occasion were both Sirloin steak came, piping hot, cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. It's not the Ritz or anything but if your looking for good down to earth food and drink at good prices with a warm welcome to boot, then you wouldn't go far wrong in giving Ardbrecknish bar & reaturant a visit.

The food was delicious and the portion sizes generous. Not too many places will put two steaks on your plate, with the waitress explaining with a big smile that 'the chef thought one of them was a bit small, so gave you two to make up for it'! We were the only ones having dinner in the pub, which was slightly unnerving but the service was excellent. Words such as 'quirky' and 'funky' would be very suitable for this restaurant, to sum it up in one though I'd have to go for 'memorable' (for all the right reasons!). We had haggis for starters and steak and lamb for mains. Would certainly recommend the meatier dishes as they seemed good, proper Scottish grub. Good value too.My one tip would be to get there fairly early (before the damn midges appear!) and have a few drinks outside, enjoying the breathtaking views of Loch Awe

This old pub was very warm and welcoming with a good range of food and drinks available to weary travellers let down by their current hotel. Dishes are filling, well priced and will return next year to check out self catering available

Good food, reasonably priced and wonderful atmosphere in the bar where you meet the locals. We even had a go at carpet bowls! Pool table kept our boys amused. Well done!

AS a guest at the house, a really convenient restaurant with good food at a good price. Friendly staff make you feel like family; same for the bar. The latter with a decent selection of malts.

Can't resist writing another favourable report about this restaurant & bar. I have just returned from another fishing trip with several friends. We stay at the cottage in the grounds of Ardbrecknish twice a year and rely on good food and beer after spending many hours on the Loch fishing since the crack of dawn! The menu is varied, the service is excellent, together with quality & quantity. The bar staff are always friendly and the beer slips down a treat. It is the perfect place to end the perfect day.

My two friends and I visit Loch Awe twice a year in May and September for the Pike Fishing. Whilst the cottage we rent is self catering we obviously spend most of our time in a boat chasing monsters!! Our saving grace is the restaurant in Ardbrecknish House where Iain the Chef has never failed to deliver a superb meal, well prepared and presented to superbly round off our day.Whether the fishing has been excellent or we haven't had a bite we know we are guaranteed a meal prepared from fresh locally sourced products. Iain has cleverly devised a workably short but varied menu that enables him to ensure a well cooked, excellent portion of food at extremely reasonable prices. Only trouble is the word is getting around and the restaurant is now being frequented more and more by unsatisfied diners from less accomplished restaurants!!However we have never failed to sit down to a sumptuous meal in the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of the Ardbrecknish Restaurant and Bar

We called at Ardbrecknish House whilst staying at the nearby Portsonachan Hotel where we were having a terrible experience. The food was amazing. The locals were friendly and welcoming as were other guests staying in the self catering accommodation. We looked around the accommodation and will definitely return.Thank you to you all for restoring our faith in Scottish hospitality especially Douglas for his whiskey expertise. Also thanks to the Portsonachan for being so dreadful that we discovered this true gem.

We have stayed at Ardbrecknish House many times over the past few years and have come to regard it as our bolt hole when we want to escape the madness of modern life in commuter land. During the winter months accommodation is on a purely self-catering basis, but from the start of the fishing season food is available in the bar and restaurant. If you are used to staying in sterile, homogenised, bland corporate hotels with "Grand Designs" style decor and fraternised by braying executives..... then Ardbrecknish won't be to your taste. Nor will it meet the standards of pretentious so-called "foodies" whose sleek kitchens at home aren't used for more than toasting the odd piece of organic ciabatta. If, however, you appreciate the things that really matter - breathtaking scenery, home-from-home comforts, a warm welcome from genuinely friendly hosts and locals - then this is the place to be. The food is always fresh, tasty, well-presented and offers good value for money. There certainly isn't any "ding" food on the menu here. Ian the chef, is very accommodating should you have any special food requirements........I was offered haddock in lemon butter as an alternative to the battered option on the menu on one occasion and it was absolutely wonderful. I can't think of a better place to recharge the batteries than this place; in fact I don't want TOO many people to flock here.........it's all mine!!! Can't wait for the next time.

have just spent ten days staying at ardbrecknish house and had eaten in the restaurant several times, the menu is quite small but i guess this is the best way to ensure all the food is fresh. having said that there is still a good selection. I had several dishes off the menu during my stay but the Haddock is fantastic (was sampled on more than one occasion!!!) All the food was cooked fresh and piping hot just what you need after a long and wet days walking or fishing. the open fire keeps you nice and toasty too. All the staff were very friendly and the chef was very happy to cater for my requirements. there is a fine selection of scottish whiskey which i enjoyed far too much! along with some good conversation from the locals and bar staffwell worth a visit if you are in the area. will definateley go again

As this was No.1 on tripadvisor we visited when staying at the nearby portsonichon hotel. If the barmaid(owner) and chef focused more on food and service and less on telling us how terrible the portsonichon was then things might have improved. The chicken pie was a tasteless congealed casserole with a bit of puff pastry, the vegetables were not freshly cooked but had clearly been cooked earlier in the day, at best, and then microwaved. And the whole dish was cold. The chicken tikka was also cold, congealed and tasteless. And they didn't serve us the wine we asked for. However, they did take great delight in rubbishing and bad mouthing the hotel down the road. Would never go again even if I was starving. Stay away.

As usual celebrated the end of the fishing season with a meal at the Ardbrecknish hotel.Food was as usual up to standard enhanced by the delightful service of the barmaid/ owner. If your tired, caught nothing all day would recommend this hostelry as a great place to drown your sorrows. The fact that the walls of the bar are decorated with record breaking stuffed trout can only add to the experience.

Having stayed at ardbrecknish for many years I have sampled the food here many times- in fact have probably eaten the entire munu. The food is lovely ,very well-cooked,great prices and a huge portion size. The chef Ian is friendly and helpful and apart from the normal menu there are often several specials. The Haddock and The steak pie are out of this world. The bar is used by guests and locals alike leading to a lively atmosphere. Having read a previous review I can whole heartedly say that "Mr D" as he was called has always been courteous and great fun with my partner and me as all the locals have. They are all friendly and up for a good chat.

I recently visited the area and with amazing scenery and lovely friendly accomodation we couldnt ask for more the accomodation was clean and tidy. The food in the restaurant was beautiful we both had the fish which was freshly caught and melt in the mouth in a cream sauce. The staff were friendly and it was really nice to meet the chef and thank him for our wonderful meal. Would be really glad to visit again and look forward to it.

Positives - Lochside view, cosy bar, friendly bar lady.Negatives - fake gas stove, unlit log fire, poor choice of beer, the cloud of venom who we'll call Mr.D. who looks like a fitment at the corner of the bar.Got in here one night recently and was initially disappointed to see any proper Scottish beer. Every Scottish hotel should use fresh quality local produce if they can and that includes serving quality Scottish beers. If they cant do cask ales please buy bottles from our world class micro breweries like Orkney, Loch Fyne, Isle of Skye, Inveralmond etc! They had Tennents copy of Belhaven Best - it was drinkable..............just!!Got chatting with the chef - friendly guy and the local Mr.D supping his cider. After asking us lots of questions he bluntly stated "complete rubbish, you're talk complete rubbish" not in a friendly argumentative way but in an aggresive provocative way looking to upset us outsiders. After an open & frank exchange he suggested we "move on" however he then repeated the scenario ten minutes later calling my girlfriend " a liar" after she had shared a personal story. We left our drinks and walked out feeling we were not welcome. We were planning to eat there and drink the following night as a change and to spread our modest custom around so I hope Mr. D drinks a lot of cider to compensate for the custom he drives away. Im guessing he may be the owner as I as a business owner myself wouldn't tolerate this type of behaviour from my regulars. One star for location and a second for the barmaid & cosy bar.

We came to Jura Isle to take a self driving tour of the isle with a visit to Corran Sands. Our family migrated from Jura Isle to the United States leaving from Corran Sands. Beautiful beach for finding little shells, wandering in the water and just sitting and pondering.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

When open (it has now closed permanently); it was a great wee eating house! We went there often. It will be sadly missed, used by many locals, tourists and organisations as an affordable restaurant.
