Despite its awful name (which had put me off for a long from entering) I ventured into the shop last Saturday and was surprised at one thing, there was a choice of coffee type, South American or Eithopian which was interesting. I tried both and both coffees were excellent. Coffee wasn't cheap but I don't mind paying for it when the quality is this good. There is limited seating inside, this may be due to covid, so it feels a little bit spartan at the moment. Staff were excellent and knowledgable.

Went in there today having heard the coffee was good. The barista spent a good 10 minutes fussing with the coffee grinder which obviously had a problem. However, no direct acknowledgement to me or eye contact to say it would take a while. Finally left, there are plenty of high quality coffees on offer in the neighbourhood.

Coffee as I remember it, good quality filter and great to see it being made behind the counter using a pour over. The chocolate ganache and orange polenta cakes are to die for and perfectly formed.

Went in for some afternoon coffee, ordered two coffees. Came to £7... a fair bit when compared to pret a manger just across the road, but price doesn’t matter if it’s a decent coffee. Both coffees came in tiny cups, not even 4 fingers in height but wasn’t too bothered as i thought it would taste good, seemed like a chic coffee shop... coffee tasted like crap. Quite literally 5 sips and it was gone. Terrible value for money. Friendly staff though on the upside.

I have visited Kiss The Hippo from day one of their opening. Initially the coffee was excellent, Flat Whites were well made and I stopped off twice a day. The early mornings the Flat Whites were no better than Starbucks and mostly worse so stopped visiting in the early morning. I didn't see a single member of staff smile or engage in any way. We popped in here a couple of times, once just for a tea and coffee which was very good indeed and once for breakfast. The coffee is gorgeous and the tea is proper leaf tea so very nice indeed. The scrambled eggs are amazing and such a great colour. Service very nice and friendly, they only take cards by the way, and the place was very clean and tidy. One criticism, all coffee houses now seem to be a haven for people either 'working from home' on their computers or people just hanging about chatting on their computers. Either way they do take up a lot of room and for very long periods of time, but I suppose if they have a coffee there is no time limit on how long they can stay and take up seats for others.

We called here for a snack yesterday. We chose 2 berry compote yogurt mixtures and 2 coffees. While my partner did the ordering I wandered upstairs to try and find seating. The number of customers on laptops with their belongings strewn over additional empty chairs was unreal, not one person offered up their spare seat and this really should be addressed by management. We eventually got a table on the ground floor but had to clear the table ourselves even though there were staff behind the counter doing nothing. Even bringing the dirty plates to the counter didn't seem to phase them one iota, I wouldn't rate the service at all.

Visited Hippo at 9:00am this morning. Ordered a few coffees and a croissant. Now the thing is... I hobbled in using a walking stick. I asked if they could possibly take the order to my table: no. I was told they’d take the food, but I would have to take the coffees. They spent much time and care making the coffees - then laid the four coffees out, plus a separate milk jug... and turned away. I was a bit surprised - as I only had one hand free (the other was needed for the walking stick). I went to my table, deposited the stick, and hobbled back, then asked if they had a tray. The behaviour implied this was a big ask... but I was offered a tiny tray that was then loaded but couldn’t take everything. So I hobbled/limped back to my table with a tray in one hand and a milk jug in the other. Managed not to spill much. Quite remarkable.....

Very good flat white but my husbands cappuccino had just tiny more foam than mine. After sampling most of the coffees shops In Richmond, this latest addition to the high street has a lot of competition on its doorstep. On the basis of the over priced coffee, it is well made and very smooth but in the very small cups 2 sips and it's gone. The food we tried this day was the ham and cheese toastie on sourdough bread. It tasted of pure salt as the smoked ham was very salty and even the cheese tasted salty. How these ingredients were ever chosen I'll never know ? The vegan banana cake was the opposite. Possibly the worst cooked breakfast we’ve ever attempted to eat . The service was polite and no problems there but the food was simply awful . Processed ham , a pale fried egg and some frozen chips . Indelible and the little I ate repeated on me all day , my daughter felt quite unwell after attempting to eat the full English - managed 1 sausage toast and a few beans . Go over the bridge and there are some beautiful cafes instead.

We went here as a family on a Sunday for lunch, the 4 of us ate in the bar ordered at the bar and were shocked to find we were charged 10% service charge for eating in the bar, which is separate from the restaurant, apart from bringing our food to our table I don’t know why we were charged this service charge for as we did not receive table service. The roast dinner we ordered at £21 each for myself and my partner was exactly the same size portion as my sons child’s roast that cost £8.50, when we complained to the manager we were told ‘to order a kids portion next time to save some money’, lovely customer relations, we were told that this is a chain. The place is always empty now we see why, the service is shocking, there are flies everywhere. We will not be returning to this profiteering extortionate bar again.

We have enjoyed eating here in the past but on this occasion it was a definite deux points. When you pay nearly £50 for two small plates of fish and chips and two pints of cider you expect it to be better than the fish and chips at Morrisons. Instead the fish was dry and clearly not restaurant quality while the chips were indifferent at best. If I’d paid £8 in a cafe I would have been disappointed but in a “bistro” pub that pretends to be a Belgian style restaurant it feels like yet another eating establishment that has lost its way.
