For us, location was important but so was customer service. Being just 7 miles from Keswick meant it was easy and convenient to buy provisions yet being at the foot of Hellvellyn and on the edge of Thirlmere water put walking and scenery right at your doorstep. The meal we ate here was superb, the breakfast service fantastic. The only negative observation was that they appeared to be short staffed which put some of the team under pressure. They handled it but there was one evening in particular when Jo (?) was on her own serving at the bar and taking all the restaurant orders. Smiles were at a premium that night. There is no doubt that if we stayed near Thirlmere again, we would come back here. It’s so much more that just an old pub. It was warm, friendly and atmospheric. Car parking got busy but that was understandable. People visited because the food here was really good.

We had a lovely stay of three nights at the King's Head Inn, where we packed in an ascent to the summit of Helvellyn, a trek from Keswick up to the stunning views from Walla Crag and a visit to the powerful energy of the stone circle of Castlerigg, all very close by. The location is superb, right in the heart of the most scenic and stunning part of The Lake District, and the hotel is literally at the very start of the most popular route to the summit of Helvellyn and close to numerous other trails and walks. The hotel itself is charming, steeped in history and as authentic as it gets. We were looked after impeccably by Peter and his totally on the ball team. We look forward to our return.

We were fortunate enough to stop at the Kings Head for Sunday lunch after returning from a visit to Keswick. What a fabulous place. The location is amazing and the Sunday lunch was superb. My husband had the sirloin beef and I had the lamb served with a good selection of vegetables and tasty gravy. Everything was so beautifully cooked and delicious. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient. What more could you want

We wanted a few days in the Lakes after our daughter’s wedding and managed to book a room here at relatively short notice. It’s well placed for walking and visits, and there’s a h bus stop right outside which makes things very easy. The walk up Helvellyn starts from the farm right next to the pub. The staff were all very friendly and the food consistently excellent: we ate there three nights so sampled a lot of the menu. Breakfast is served rather than being a buffet, which is a nice change from many hotels. There’s a large selection of beers available and a nice garden area for when it’s sunny, which it was all of our stay. Our room was a good size with a comfy bed. I would definitely come here again.

Euro 2024 season so the pub has a "live football here" sign out. We walked 1.5 miles from our hotel to watch a game, have a meal and a few drinks. Well... although we were disappointed that there was no volume to go with the game, the lovely ladies behind the bar and the manager were very kind and accommodating. Despite some misunderstanding at the beginning of our visit, we'd definitely recommend the place to others as the manager turned out to be a very friendly man. The food was amazing! We had sausage and mash (gravy to die for!) and tenderloin (accompanied by top tzatziki sauce). The staff here are very polite, the service was great and food fresh and delicious.

We booked a table for 6.00pm. After a long walk around the lake we called in at 5.30pm and it was a little quiet, but the staff gave us an excellent greeting. I ordered the lamb shank and my wife ordered the burger. The lamb was ' to die for' it just fell off the bone and the gravy was just 'yummy' I mopped it up with the top of my wife's burger. Her burger was freshly made and she ate it all. It wasn't the biggest of lamb shanks, but just right for me.

So disappointed! We booked in at their sister hotel Lodge in Vale 1 mile away and was recommended to come here. As you are in the middle of nowhere there aren't many choices so we walked a mile with our dog so excited to have a drink and some food outside. To our horror the staff said they were not serving food outside, no idea why? Can't be down to covid as safer to eat outside. We then asked if we could have a table inside & she said fully booked.I know it was Bank Holiday Monday and I accept places get busy however we were staying at their sister hotel & nobody warned us this could happen. We ended up leaving & going elsewhere. We asked the staff did they know anywhere local we could go to as our phone 4g wasn't working well and had no map but as she was new she couldn't help us.Also it is £12 each to eat breakfast here so £36 for 3 of us is very expensive which we didn't end up booking.I would recommend going to Keswick or Grasmere instead.

We stayed in October and managed a five day stay before the lockdown. The position of the hotel is ideal for visiting all areas in the North part of the lakes, although on the main road it was peaceful and relaxing with the wood burner in the residents lounge being a real treat. The staff were all very pleasant especially the young lady in housekeeping. The breakfast was nice but you did need to ask for cereal, I believe this is a covid issue but nobody offered it until we had stayed three nights. We did have a couple of issues regarding our first room with the quality of the mattress being the main point but this was handled very professionally. I have emailed the hotel about some other minor points but as yet not had a reply??All in all a very pleasant stay, good location, decent food and nice staff. I would visit again and recommend it to other people who want a peaceful stay with a great location.

Lovely place, comfy bed, clean and tidy. Warm throughout during our miserable weather stay. Only 4 stars due to the fact staff were a little forgetful. No offer of more coffee or tea at breakfast. No preserves offered at breakfast with our toast. Not even asked if our meals or breakfast was OK if I'm honest. Only curtious in this industry if when dining we have everything we need esp when you pay good money for the stay and meals.Sorry but truth!!

We stayed here for 2x nights last weekend. The room allocated was excellent, the bed was ok, the bathroom had a shower and usual conveniences and was stocked well with Shampoo and Shower Gel. The room was big and had a lovely view over the farmland on the otherside of the road with the Fell in the distance. The room had a large TV and an armchair to admire the sceenary. The Inn, is well located next to the main road between Windermere and Keswick. The road was busy, and traffic was only heard in the day not at night. Its ideal if you are touring near by attractions in and around Keswick and if your driving its well positioned. There is a bus stop right outside with a regular bus service operating from Lancaster to Keswick that goes via the other lakeside resorts such as Winderemere. We ate at the Inn both nights of our stay in the restaurant, which is more intimate than the pub and offered a chilled environment with pleasant music in the background, If you wanted to eat in the pub side you can, as its the same menu but more pub like in surrounding. The food was fairly priced if you take into consideration of the location being on the road with no other shops in the vicinity, more botique pub prices. You pay for what you get, the quality of the food was excellent and was very appertising, with the quantity being fair. The pub side of the inn, was lovely and very Traditional with an Old'y World'y feel to it, and a lovely little beer garden at the front. It serves the same food as the restaurant and has a wide selection of local ales, as well lagers, cider and wines. There is a shop onsite for local produce, however this was open to us being the times we are in.The Kings Head has been by the far the best established COVID-19 Measure we have witnessed, the management has thought of everything, and made it as safe as they can without infringing on the customer experience. We were very impressed, although we are not really that conscious of the current situation, we do appreciate that most are, and this Inn is second to none on their procedures, such as our key being allocated in a plastic bag, being the told the room has been air santitised, as well as pre-ordering food and table service it was excellent. The staff were very well trained, and extremely professional and courteous. We were welcome by the Manager I believe, who was informative and well mannered. He explained everything we needed to know, and went out of his way to accommodate any requests. His staff were lovely, really genuine nice people, and seemed to actually enjoy their work. The staff were excellent. One very minor critic, I want to comment on, is that in the room we were allocated, when you open the door to the bathroom, there is a slight step to the flooring which isnt that noticible unless you were looking at the floor, upon first entry almost tripped as opened the door and walked through without looking, although is so minor and didnt upset our stay, maybe a bit of tape over the raised flooring would mitigate any future incident.Other than the small minor above we had a fantastic time and highly recommend this Inn to anyone wanting a well located homely Inn with second to none customer service, thats safe and clean. We have already recommended you to our friends and family.Thank you.

Visited The Kings Head three times this week, twice for dinner and once for breakfast, as we were staying in The Lodge In The Vale which is a sister hotel up the road. We both had sea bass followed by chocolate brownie on the first evening, and it was so delicious we had exactly the same two days later. Breakfast was equally delicious. Hats off to the chef - wonderful food. The Kings Head itself is in a stunning and accessible location, with a beautiful interior. I would definitely like to stay here next time I visit. The staff were fantastic. On our first visit we underestimated the timing of our day’s walk, and had to phone to say we’d be late. The gentleman who answered was very helpful, and despite being busy he managed to hold our table for us. On our second visit we were late again, but this time were unable to phone ahead due to lack of reception and so called in a whole hour late to apologise. A charming gentleman called Rob was completely lovely about it and managed to squeeze us in to a slot to repeat our sea bass experience. COVID-wise it all felt very safe, with all the expected measures in place. I can’t praise The Kings Head highly enough.

I can’t speak highly enough of the team at the Kings Head. We had the misfortune to break down shortly before the pub and managed to limp into the car park. With no mobile coverage we were reliant on the landline in the hotel reception, and the support of the staff. The manager Peter in particular could not have been more helpful and supportive, despite it being a hot day, and the hotel and bar very busy. Peter gave me a number to organise taxis to get us back to our accommodation, and even came outside to me when the recovery rang. We were so grateful we decided to go back two nights later for a meal, and both the food and the service were outstanding. A great end to an incredibly difficult situation.

I booked a night away for my partner and I for a Christmas treat. We wanted a cosy inn with modern rooms, proper beer, and good food... and that’s exactly what we found. Our standard double room was comfortable and tastefully decorated, with a lovely powerful shower. We ate in the bar restaurant, and shared the hunter’s skillet to start which was delicious. We both opted for the steak and kidney pie, and as others have said it was an extremely generous portion obviously made for walkers! Very tasty, but I’d have liked a smaller portion option as it’s a shame to see food wasted and I had no room for sticky toffee pudding! The Montepulciano and Jennings Cumberland also went down well.Breakfast the following morning was a choice of cooked options from traditional to eggs Royale (poached with hollandaise and smoked salmon - mmm) plus toast, fruit, juice etc. It set up us well to attempt a walk up Skiddaw, and the location is great for lakeside or hill walks. The only very slight negative was that it’s not double glazed, so the room felt a little chilly on arrival until we closed the blind, and we noticed road noise (the road is not that busy but traffic travels fast). I’d recommend earplugs.Staff were very welcoming, and overall we loved our stay and would recommend this place. I’m looking forward to returning when the days are longer with our dog... and possibly the daughters!

We were welcomed, and after drinks had been sorted we were shown to our table,The menu is best described as good pub grub and is supplemented by specials. We decided to skip starters and go straight for the main - just as well we did as the portions were not skimpy! Everyone enjoyed their meals (although a special mention must be made of the steak and kidney pudding). Some of us made room for afters and these were of similar standard (and quantity!). After a long walk up and down Helvellyn, we stopped to refuel ourselves and what a fantastic find this place was. We were warmly greeted and eased our aching joints to a table. Although a limited lunch menu, the portions are very generous and both our meals were hot and extremely tasty. Indeed on serving up the Steak & Kidney pudding, the staff member joked that no-one had managed to finish it off – they have never met my other half! I have to admit I was beaten by my meal, but it was no reflection on the quality – there was just too much for me. And yes my other half finished all the pudding… The dinner menu appears to be more expansive and we will certainly be back to try more of what is on offer. It is not a huge pub but has a lovely ambience and all the staff were very friendly. A gem of a find.

Been coming here for years, on and off and it’s still good. The restaurant is to one end with a well stocked bar of local ales by Jennings brewery. The star of the menu has to be the steak and kidney pudding. Filled to the brim with lots of meat. Service was reasonable fast and friendly. Service is from noon to late so when we arrived for lunch mid afternoon getting food was no problem. We really enjoyed our stop over.

Perfectly located for me this hotel was ideal for road support in the middle of the night 2-3 am for some friends doing the Bob Graham round. I checked in no problems, room was excellent with great shower and comfy bed. Room was quiet to despite being over the bar.. Breakfast. Full English perfect start to the day served promptly and nice and hot.

Steak and kidney pudding filling was dry and tasteless, pastry dreadful, vegetables too raw - first time I have known husband waste a meal. My scampi over cooked and chips very dry - again food left. Food poor considering the amount charged. Sorry, won’t be calling in again.

Stayed here for 2 nights for a short break . Accommodation is fine but bedroom needs updating as it all seemed tired. The windows are old and not double glazed so were dripping with condensation in the mornings . The breakfast was very good and we had our evening meals there which we found were very good with plenty of choice.

Had just completed my first Wainwright: Clough Head, and celebrated with a pint of bitter shandy and the best chips! Not sure how many times these are cooked or baked or whatever but they were sold to me as 'the best chips' and that was spot on. Sat in the beer garden, in the sunshine - in October - and felt like I had won the lottery. Been back since and enjoyed a crunchy salad and yes, chips!!

The King’s head is a typical inn with nice staff and good food. Very good location. Plenty room for parking and you can’t hear the road at night. Keswick is nearby for shopping. The staff is very helpful and hard working. Next time we visit the Lake District it will probably also that location.

This place was a great addition to our Lakes District holiday. We wanted to stay at a traditional roadside inn - what a fine choice this was. The staff at the front desk were very helpful, parking is ample and accessible and the pub and the food were great. We ordered off of the three course steak menu. A fine choice. Great small selection of local beers on tap. The staff are incredibly hard working - those that closed the pub were serving breakfast first thing the next morning. My only small piece of advice is that the payment process needs improvement - settling up was more of a hassle for everyone than it should be. Recommended.

Steak and kidney pudding was huge but the meat was tough, dry, grizzly and fatty. Clearly very little attention had been paid to preparing the meat properly. The pudding itself had a strange aroma which I put down as paprika. I'm unsure why paprika would end up in a steak pudding unless the jar had been spilled during preparation. The vegetables were not cooked either; I'm all for 'al dente' but some amount of cooking is still necessary. The chips on the other hand were fine, if that matters.

Driving past the car park was always full/ busy so decided to give it a go one evening whilst staying locally, outdoor seating area on the grass is nice, bar area quite nice too and seating around the bar, as you go in and turn left takes you in to a restaurant which is dark and dingy, dirty with cobwebs and dead flies and uncomfortable seating, we moved out of there as it just wasn’t pleasant.

We wanted to escape from Keswick once again and rather then to Braithwaite came into this great spot. Called to book table at 7 and got option at 8! Friday evening! Absolutely awesome Food and drink great(beetroot risotto spot on); reasonably priced. The only fault was about 98 flies randomly going around dinning room. As I am working in hospitality I wasnt that bother but my partner was a bit complain. There are ways how to get rid of them - Anyway even through that we enjoyed our evening and gonna look forward to come again! Maybe in less warm time of year.

The welcome and menu were great but there the good news ended - slow service, very poor quality food more fat than beef, cold yorkshires and non descript veg - pudding was also very poor half set crème brulee, cheap ice cream and fruit coulis that looked liked tomato ketchup - no shortbread and when I asked where it was I was told it was a misprint - isn't this a trading standards issue ? Poor Poor Poor and when we told the owner he didn't seem to care - Ps I am very English and hardly ever complain !

Me and my husband decided to go here for tea on our stay in Keswick and it was pretty average! I got the beef and ale pie the pie was lovely but the chips which came with it were hard in the middle so I couldn’t eat them all. My husband had the Cumberland sausage, mash and peas he said the sausage was nice but the mash tasted like smash. The service was excellent couldn’t fault it the ladies were really helpful and gave service with a smile :)

We were heading for some time in Langstrath and needed a couple of nights as a stop over to join up our trip. We had passed the Kings Head many times but never been in. The room was booked and included breakfast. The had recently been refreshed and had a huge modern shower. Not the biggest hotel room but comfortable. Dinner in the pub/restaurant was great both nights; lamb, chicken, pork and steak pud all cooked well. Good range of breakfasts, also very well cooked. Only thing that could have been better was Wi-Fi - very weak service. Overall well worth a visit.

Sad to say that our trip there was a a big disappointment when it come to the food. We all had beef, it was dry and chewy. When we talked to the waiter, we have been told that is the way the chef does it. It is a shame that they only sell well done cuts of meat...

We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.
