Unfriendly landlord, unwelcoming atmosphere. Loads of food choices up on blackboards but no chef to cook them. Told me I needed to pay cash as card machine doesn’t accept payments under £5. I used to love this pub with its good food and lovely beer garden. Sadly it is no longer the same. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The most miserable, unwelcoming old man behind the bar, lied about the card machine being set to a £5 minimum (it's the owners choice not a set machine) paid £4 for cheesy garlic bread which was burnt to a crisp. The kitchen is just a shelf of microwaves, I witnessed to lady cooking the food eating off the trays. I don't mind a dive bar, but this took the piss. After spending £40 there, the 'happy' man behind the bar refused to serve my partner a small wine because of the £5 minimum. Joke of a pub

If I could give negative star rating I would. What a total dump. The landlord is unbelievably grumpy and rude. He doesn’t care how long you wait to be served. It’s obviously getting in the way to serve anyone. The food is disgusting and takes forever. There is no gluten free options and in fact I was laughed at when I asked about my allergy. Seriously the location is lovely and the garden a great location but it’s not worth it for the misery of trying to get served.

On arriving at the pub a very grumpy man appeared from behind the bar didn’t even say hello. Made to feel completely unwelcome. We stay as we had just walked 5miles and wanted food and drink. I ordered drinks and a sandwich. I was immediately told it’s white bread as out of bread. Didn’t have any choice I then ordered cheesy chips. See the photo that all I’m saying. Loving garden, gammon in the sandwich was nice as for the welcoming feeling definitely not there. I won’t be stopping again, it’ll be one of the other pubs in the high street.

We came with my children and husband in a wheelchair. The man serving was grumpy and unaccommodating when we told him our wheelchair could not access the garden. He said the pub is grade I listed so they could not widen main garden entrance and he didn’t have the key for the 5 bar gate. out they had a 5 bar gate at bottom of car park.

Booked in advance for Sunday Lunch for 4 as we had not eaten out for some time as the cost of living meant we’ve cut back so we were really looking forward to our treat as we had been to the pub on several occasions before. Sorely disappointed not only with the 1 hr 15 minute wait for our food (the pub was not busy), but also the lack of a sorry from any staff. Normally you pay to eat out as the food is usually better than what you could prepare at home… the Sunday Roast was a basic let down. Heated up and a little dry. Would AVOID for food and just go for drinks. Pub has gone downhill for us on this occasion as it just spoils your day and you get the privilege of paying a lot of money for it.

Popped in for lunch on hot day , pleasantly surprised to see space in car park and garden as all pubs we d called were fully booked . We ve been a few years ago and knew there was a tendency for wasps in the garden this time of year which can t be helped . Soon realised why it was pretty empty .Such an unfriendly abrupt man behind bar … landlord ??Food less than average though it was cheaper than average to be fair .Dirty glasses , didn t dare complain as felt I d have head bitten off by Mr Grumpy .Even another customer commented to me about unhappy vibe . The pub backs onto and has access to the river and would be a goldmine and a pleasure to visit if the right people took over. It may have been landlady sunbathing by entrance and it wasn’t a welcoming image. No one sided how our food was , even when passing .Having just come from 3 days eating in pubs in the New Forest , being served by lovely caring catering staff , this was a stark contrast . Will remember this as ‘one to avoid’ .

Well where do I start! Lovely place but the landlady (if you can call her that) is totally vile! She had ago at my 14 year old daughter as she went and got a drink from the car (which had her medication in) when I told her that she said no it didn’t and kept arguing! I told her if she has a problem with one of my children to speak to me NOT my child! Then proceeded to sit starting at my daughter which made her very uncomfortable! Then a bit later on she Called me mrs attitude as she tried taking 5 glasses away that were nearly full which belonged to my children, all I said was were still drinking those! Her and her staff were drinking alcohol so god knows what would of happened if there was a fire cos they would have been no use to anyone! She then proceeded to have ago at the rest of my family too! What a nasty creature she was! Even her own husband told her to shut up. Needless to say we left straight away as there was no way we were putting anymore money in there tills! The only way I would go back is if the old hag has left!if you plan on having a nice afternoon out avoid this place at all costs!

What can I say. My daughter had hired the barn in the garden for my grandsons christening. What a lovely place. There was over 80 people in our party putting lots of money over the bar. The landlady was having a go at my niece for getting a drink of coke from her car. My I add she is only 13. She spoke to my sister in law who has just had a major operation 3 weeks ago and called her vile. The landlady then sat on a table in the garden with a drink smoking a fag and staring. We ignored her. A little later she came over again and asked if the drinks were finished to switch she was told no. Again the reply was what a rude person you are. I then told the landlady she has been sitting there drinking and is drunk and people are putting money in her till. She tried to deny it. After that I told no one else to put any more money in there till. The pub was empty inside, I'm not surprised why. A lovely looking pub with a lovely garden by the river. Shame about the the landlady. This pub definitely needs new landlords.

Well what can I say…. It was my nephews christening Sunday 12th of June and what was such a lovely ceremony we headed here for the celebration party, the day started off lovely but was quickly turned around when we were confronted by the most vile, disgusting service I have ever received. I can see that I am only adding to the extremely poor reviews that have already been posted. There were around 80 of us celebrating my nephews christening and his first birthday the day before. If we hadn’t of been at the kings head there would have been no money going in that till all day as after the customers that were there for lunch had left it was dead apart from us there. We are all big drinkers and we had put a lot of money in their till. I will be honest as I can here.. I have been in the hospitality trade for 14 years so I know The struggles and how difficult is to make money in such a difficult financial climate at the moment, however customer service and the product is key to keeping your business running. Poor service = no custom. The landlady was vile to the highest degrees and I have never seen it had service like we had today, So one of our teenage guests decided to go to the car as she had some Coca Cola in the car and decided to take her glass and fill it up on the car park. Yes this is cheeky but considering how much money we had spent, any patron would have found the parent and spoke to them about it before shouting at the child. If I was in her shoes I would of turned a blind eye and been happy that we were there today spending like we were. The way she came over and shouted was horrendous. Not only was she rude and vulgar she was also drunk. She had spent the afternoon in sun drinking something with coke and denied it. She was slurring her words and when I told her that she was lying and I could see by her skin she had a problem she walked off and started gossiping to other guests ( I guess her regulars ) about us. We weren’t fazed much by this but then an hour later she came back with a tray and proceeded to start clearing our glasses from our table, most of which were half full with the kids lemonades that we had bough from her bar. My auntie said I’m sorry we are still drinking them and her reply was straight up “sorry miss attitude” to which then I had to get involved and tell her how disgusting she was. Drunk and abusive she never once told us to leave yet sat like a teenager in her chair smoking away and staring at us with the most vile look on her face. Illegal or not, drinking behind the bar is ridiculous as the staff have a duty of care for the guests there and this venue clearly doesn’t give a hell about customers. Another bartender did come out at the end who I clearly saw with a beer in his hand behind the bar to tell me that nobody was drunk there. I don’t care. There were about 30 children there and I’d anything had happened at the pub I would of been 100 percent certain that none of us would have put our faith in the staff to help in any way! I can clearly see how bad the service is from previous reviews and quite Frankly I don’t know how they are operating as a business. The only thing going for them is the location and the beautiful beer garden there. They have a play area to for the little ones and it’s right by the river so anyone with a good business sense would be making a fortune there, it’s a wasted business opportunity. I would highly advise not going there and neither would the 80 people that were there in the day. Not only did you ruin the day for us you have cut yourselves short as none of us will return. DISGUSTING LANDLADY.. steer well clear

I agree with the other reviews: Owners - please take heed of the review here. Your staff don’t seem to want customers! Imagine the popularity and draw of this pub if these reviews praised the service and food, the quality of the garden and the warm welcome. But no. Yes the garden is a massive draw, which is why we visited on a glorious sunny day. But if I’d read the reviews beforehand I would not have come. The hedges need a good prune to make the most of the view; grass could do with a cut. We had a cheese sandwich (no option for pickle), limp salad, and some chips (which tasted of fish - a little disconcerting for a vegetarian). This took 35 minutes to arrive. A shame - this could be an outstanding place.

No apology from him when the food finally arrived which was the sort of unpleasant looking, nasty tasting junk you'd expect from a roadside vendor (but twice the price at 9.95), even the ketchup tasted bad. We ordered our food at 6.15, and when other people's food who had ordered after us came, I enquired at the bar. I was told that it was being cooked and would be out soon. At 7.15 I went back and asked about my food and then the manager/landlord told me that the kitchen had not receive my order. Not a word of apology. He said that it would now be cooked. Went back to my table. Some time later, my wife went back and had been told that it was in the queue. When I went back to enquire I was told that it was cooked and was being plated up. Finally got food at 7.35, muttered apology from the young barman. When I asked him for some form of compensation, he said "you will have to talk to the manager about that". Manager heard this, but made no effort to talk to me. By that time I was too tired and hungry to bother so we ate our food and left. A pity as we are moving to the area and were looking for a pub to be our local. This is not going to be it! I echo the comment of another review. Everything seems to be too much trouble for the staff here.

I really loved this old inn. I am always amazed that beautiful medieval pubs such as this are still in existence. England is very fortunate. The building itself dates from 1504, and I read that many of the darkened oak beams were derived from old ships. By judging from their appearance, they must have been incorporated into the building when it was built. The atmosphere is very welcoming with its fireplace and ancient beams displaying many horse harness brasses. I had a very pleasant experience just sitting there sipping a glass of wine and soaking up the atmosphere while waiting for my dinner to arrive. Although my hotel has a very good restaurant, I chose to eat two of my dinners here. I normally do not enjoy strong cheeses, but I took a chance and selected two entrees in which one of the main ingredients was Stilton cheese: chicken breast with a Stilton cheese sauce and a broccoli Stilton cheese soup. They were both excellent. The staff was also friendly and accommodating.

On our way to Steyning we decided to stop at this quaint looking country pub for a bite to eat, we noticed a car park and large beer garden backing onto the river and thought we'd found a nice spot for a summertime lunch, how naive.

Have been going here for years and still good old pub grub. Nice beer garden for a sunny afternoon. Low ceilings and lovely interior (not modern at all) - nice local pub feel. Nice food and good playground for the kids. Good walks from Shoreham along the riverbank too.

Have been going to the pub for years and the food is always of a good standard - however because the staff are not full of chat and banter it can be off putting - but in effect it is a small village pub that gets a lot of transient walking trade so they tend to focus on regulars - so go with friends and enjoy the food in relaxed charm of the place. The food - I like the fact that you have 5 or more veg with liver and bacon as well as a choice of 3 styles of potatoes - a good portion of liver and smoked bacon - thick cut dry cured not cheap bacon. The chips were proper chips not French fries - crunchy golden and no seasoning so season yourself. The veg - cauli, peas, cabbage, marrow, carrots, broccoli , chips - all for £8.95 - my partner had beer battered cod and chips, peas - with slice of lemon - if I had it I would be disappointed that the tarter sauce as the condiments are sachet rather than served in a small dish as Heinz tarter sauce is rather thin - but can understand from pub costing. The cod was a thick slice so plenty of fish rather than all batter. Now for price of drinks - they are expensive £4.40 for large cola - obviously the drinks subsidises the quality of the food - but if you expect that then no complaints - £13 each for a really good meal I mentioned to my partner that the pub could be a set for a Mid Summer Murder - local villagers know each other and doggy paradise- also busy with mixed age range - So if you want a village pub, good food, nice pub garden, pleasant service (not exceptional) worth going to - note on times I have had to wait 40 mins for food other times 20 mins - all depends on how busy they are but good food takes time to cook.

Visited with some friends for evening drinks and dinner. Barman took our order, and told us that we would have to return to the bar to collect our food and carry it ourselves to our outside table. A little odd as there did appear to be waiting staff. But never mind. Luckily we all had two hands and two feet so not a major problem. Garden outside is lovely, recently refurbished children's play area. Lovely summers evening, cool beers and the promise of good food. Except it wasn't. After being summoned back to the bar by the electronic device given to us at ordering, we carried the scoff back to the table. I had a beef and horseradish burger which was good. My wife had a steak and ale pie which was ok. (I finished it off and I thought it a bit bland. "Meh" perhaps summed it up.) My son had the rump steak. This could've been served with laces and used as shoes. It was as tough as old boots. I mentioned it to the passing waitress, and received an apology. Fair enough. But no offer of a refund. You have to pay when ordering, now I know why. After an hour and just we were leaving she came back out and offered a free pudding. A little late, perhaps. Or maybe we'll timed? £14.95 for the hobnailed boot, I mean steak and £4 for a compensatory pudding? Not sure I'd bother again. Previous comments about the owner being more interested in locals did ring true. But being locals ourselves, he wasn't too interested in us. The Castle in Bramber or The Rising Sun in Upper Beeding are much more welcoming.
